출애굽 이야기 33: 눈을 들어 하늘 보라(출17:8~16)

지난 주 본문 오늘 한 번 더 보겠습니다. 제목은 ‘눈을 들어 하늘 보라’. 짜릿함이 있으면 좋겠는데, 어떤지 모르겠습니다. 11절에 이 모습이 나옵니다. 모세가 힘겹게 싸우는 이들을 보면서 간절함을 가지고 눈을 들어 하늘을 봅니다. 손에는 출애굽의 역사를 만들어낸 하나님의 지팡이가 있습니다. 이 지팡이를 손에 잡고, 항복하는 자처럼, 기도하는 자처럼 높이 듭니다. 폼을 잡는게 아닙니다. 다급한 마음을 담아 하나님의 도움을 구하는 ‘떨리는 몸짓’입니다.

‘눈을 들어 하늘 보라’. 모세가 신자의 정체성을 가지고 살아가는 이들에게 주는 도전입니다. ‘당신들도 눈을 들어 하늘을 보시라. 위를 보시라’. ‘하늘’은 구름이 떠 다니는 ‘하늘'(sky)이 아닙니다. 하나님의 주권과 임재가 있는 영적인 공간이고, 승천하신 주님이 계신 곳인데, 그 하늘(Heaven), 그 위를 보라는 것입니다.

당신은 누구요?라고 물을 때, ‘나는 이런 사람이요’. 라고 말하는 게 정체성이라고 했습니다. 신자는 어떤 사람입니까? 세 가지 기억나십니까? 첫째, 하나님의 형상으로 지음받은 존귀한 존재다. 하나님처럼 이성과 자유의지를 가지고 하나님과 교제할 수 있다. 둘 째, 신자는 하나님께 알려진 자다. Known by God. 세 째, 그리스도 안에(in Christ) 있는 자다. 우리의 정체성이고, 자녀됨인데, 이런 이들이 해야 할 가장 중요하고, 필요한 일이 무엇이겠습니까? 하늘의 하나님을 바라보고, 그분의 음성에 귀 기울이는 것보다 중요한 것은 없을 것입니다.

앞에서 눈을 들어 하늘을 보라는 말을 들으면서 짜릿하면 좋겠다고 했는데, 눈을 들어 하늘 하나님의 주권과 섭리과 도움을 본다면, 짜릿하지 않는 게 이상한 것입니다. ‘눈을 들어 하늘 보라’는 이 문장이 시시하게 들리지 않으면 좋겠습니다.

눈물 많고, 속상한 일 많고, 삶의 무게와 그늘로 어두워진 우리의 마음과 믿음을 회복시키는 힘과 길이 ‘눈을 들어 하늘을 볼 때’ 일어나기에 ‘쿵’하고 가슴을 치는 울림으로 다가와야 합니다. 모세가 손을 들어 간절함을 가지고 하늘을 보던 마음과 모습이 우리의 모습이 되면 얼마나 좋겠습니까? 애써 보십시다.

2.눈을 들어 하늘을 보는 삶
눈을 들어 하늘을 보기 위한 마음 가짐 두 개만 보도록 하겠습니다. 하나는 순서의 문제고 다른 하나는 낙관의 문제입니다. 둘 다 하늘을 잘 보지 않고 살아가는 신앙인들이 신중하게 생각해야 할 문제입니다.

(1) 보는 순서를 바꾸라.
첫 번째 문제는 순서입니다. 개인의 정체성은 큰 흐름으로 보면 세 가지 ‘봄’을 통해서 만들어 집니다. 하나는 자신, 두 번째는 주변, 세 번째는 ‘위’입니다. 자신은 자신의 내면, 안(in)을 보는 것이고, 주변은 세상이고, 위는 ‘하늘’, ‘영적 세계’입니다.

내가 누구인가? 할 때 일반적인 방식은 자신을 보고, 주변을 보고, 마지막에 위를 봅니다. 순서가 나-주변-위입니다. 거의 굳어진 순서입니다. 신자도 대부분 이 순서를 따릅니다. 하지만 성경은 이 순서를 따르지 않습니다. 신앙의 순서는 위, 주변, 나입니다. 위를 가장 먼저 보고, 그 다음에 주변과 공동체를 둘러보고, 마지막에 자신을 보게 합니다. 이렇게 하는 이유는 개인의 자율성과 주변의 영향력을 무시하라는 말이 아닙니다. 위, 하늘, 하나님을 먼저 생각해야 자신과 주변을 더 잘 볼 수 있기에 위를 먼저 보라는 것입니다.

성경의 세계관은 하나님이 먼저지 내가 먼저가 아닙니다. 내가 먼저가 아닌 이유는 나는 하나님의 피조물이기에 내가 중심이 되서는 안된다는 분명한 시각을 가지고 있습니다. 내가 중심이 되지 않는 다는 것에 기분 나쁘고, 강한 저항을 하지만 그래서 더 위를 보라고 요구하는 것입니다.

내 인생, 내가 책임지고, 내가 원하는 대로 살면 좋겠지만 피할 수 없는 죄성을 가진 사람에게는 그럴만한 실력이 없습니다. 원하는 대로 살 수 있는 사람도 없고, 설사 원하는 대로 산다고 해도 잘 살았다고 누가 말할 수 있겠습니까?

에덴에서 시작해서 바벨탑을 거쳐 이스라엘의 패망까지의 역사를 보면 무너진 이유는 하나입니다. 자기 소견대로, 자기 뜻대로 살다 그렇게 됐다는 것이 성경의 증언입니다. 성경은 메시지는 늘 똑같습니다. ‘우리는 피조물이며, 피조물 이기에 창조주 앞에 겸손해야 하며, 자신부터 시작하지 말고 하나님의 형상을 입은 자로, 하나님께 알려진 자로 하나님을 바라보면서 살라. 이게 최고의 삶이다. 너는 우주의 중심이 아니다’.

나에게서 시작하면 나를 인정할 사람을 찾게 되고, 내 입맛에 맞는 하나님을 만들기에 급급하게 됩니다. 회개는 다른게 아닙니다. 보는 순서를 바꾸는 게 최고의 회개입니다. 자신과 주변만 보던 사람이 위를 가장 먼저 보는 게 최고의 회개입니다. 하나님을 수단이 아니라 중심으로 인정하는 것입니다. 위를 먼저 보고, 주변과 나를 보는 것으로 갈 때 더 건강한 자아, 건강한 가족, 건강한 사회가 만들어 집니다. 나부터 시작하면 이기적인 인간의 욕망을 제어할 수 없습니다.

눈을 들어 하늘 보라. 스릴 넘치고 짜릿하지 않습니까? 신자의 삶은 하루하루가 ‘하늘 살이’입니다. 하늘을 보며, 하늘의 소리를 듣고, 하늘의 뜻을 이 땅 가운데 만들어 가는 삶, ‘하늘살이’입니다. 하늘 살이는 위를 먼저 보고, 그 다음에 주변을 보고, 자신을 보는 삶입니다.

하늘 살이가 주는 힘은 대단히 큽니다. 하늘살이하던 스데반 집사는 돌에 맞아 순교하기 전에 하늘을 우러러 보면서 외칩니다. ‘하늘이 열린다. 예수님이 보인다’. 돌에 맞아 죽어가면서 저들에게 죄를 묻지 말라고 기도합니다. 윤동주 시인은 ‘서시序詩’에서 ‘죽는 날까지 하늘을 우러러 한 점 부끄럼 없기를’ 노래합니다. 부끄러움 많은 세상에서 부끄러움을 피할 수 있는 유일한 길은 하늘을 우러러 보는 사람입니다. 시편 121편의 시인은 노래합니다. ‘눈을 들어 산을 보아라. 너의 도움 어디서 오나. 천지 지으신 너를 만드신 여호와께로다’

지금 것, 나와 주변에서만 맴돌았다면 이제는 위, 하늘, 하나님을 먼저 보시고, 힘을 얻으시고, 방향을 잡으시고, 도움을 청하시고, 손을 높이 드시고, 기도하시기 바랍니다. 가장 좋은 길, 하나님의 나라에 쓰임받는 보람된 인생으로 인도해 주실 것입니다.

(2) 낙관을 거부하라.
두 번째, 하늘을 보기 위한 조건은 잘못된 낙관을 거부하는 것입니다. 비관이 있고, 낙관이 있습니다. 어떤게 더 좋으십니까? 비관보다 낙관을 좋아하지만 낙관도 비관만큼 위험한 것은 마찬가지입니다.

우리가 다 겪어 봤지만 삶은 만만치 않습니다. ‘내일 일은 난 몰라요’. 내일 일 아세요? 몰라요. 잠깐 잘 되고, 잘 풀리는 것으로 안심하기에는 곳곳에 지뢰와 함정이 너무 많습니다. 근거도 없이 막연하게 ‘잘될거야’, ‘괜찮아 질거야’ 하다가 낭패를 당할 때가 한 두번이 아닙니다.

낙관의 마음이 필요하지만 쉽게 하면 안되는 게 현실입니다. 신앙인들이 순진한 낙관을 잘하지만 낙관을 믿음으로 오판하면 안됩니다. 자신의 기분에 치우친 낙관은 믿음이라고 할 수 없습니다. 낙관은 하나님에 대한 깊은 신뢰가 있어야 하고, 분명한 하나님의 뜻을 알아야 하고, 뜻을 알았다면 안일함을 버리고, 영적인 근면함을 가지고 매일의 하늘 살이를 성실하게 살때 ‘십자가와 부활’에 근거한 낙관을 가질 수 있습니다.

무모한 낙관의 가장 큰 문제는 ‘눈을 들어 하늘을 보지 않는 것’입니다. 눈을 들어 하늘을 보지 않는 것은 하나님에 대한 지향이 없는 것이기에 기도보다 더 큰 문제입니다.

믿음이 너무 좋아서 그런 것인지는 모르겠지만 하늘을 보지 않는 낙관, 하나님께 끊임없이 나가지 않는 낙관은 설사 하는 일이 잘 된다고 해도 하늘의 정체성을 가진 사람들에게는 실패한 것이라고 해도 틀리지 않습니다. 진짜 낙관은 안일한 기대에서 오는 낙관이 아닙니다. 낙관은 솟아나는 은혜입니다. 눈을 들어 하나님을 바라보고, 매사에 하나님과 함께 하며, 하나님의 말씀에 귀 기울일 때 주시는 선물이 낙관입니다.

성급한 낙관도 조심하고, 조급한 비관도 조심해야 합니다. 둘 중에 어떤 것을 더 잘하십니까? 둘 다 하늘살이의 독입니다. 헤쳐나갈 능력이 있어도, 상황이 힘들어도 In Christ, 그리스도 안에 있는 자답게 하늘을 보면서, 하나님께 알려진 자로(Known by Christ) 살아가야 합니다.

눈을 들어 하늘을 본 자의 담대함, 뚝심, 인내, 사랑, 견딤이 여러분의 인생 가운데 있기를 바라겠습니다. 눈을 들어 하늘을 바라보십시다.

Exodus Story 33: Lift Up Your Eyes and Look to the Heavens (Exodus 17:8-16)

Last week’s text We’re going to look at it one more time today, and it’s titled, “Lift up your eyes and look to heaven. I hope that’s exciting, but I don’t know how it is. In verse 11, we see this: Moses lifts his eyes to the heavens with longing as he sees the people struggling. In his hand is the rod of God, the rod that made the Exodus happen. You take this staff in your hand and hold it high, like one who surrenders, like one who prays. It’s not a formality; it’s a ‘trembling gesture’ of urgency, of asking for God’s help.

‘Lift up your eyes and look to heaven’. This is Moses’ challenge to those who live out their identity as believers: “Lift up your eyes and look to the sky. Look up’. The ‘sky’ is not the ‘sky’ with the clouds floating around; it is the spiritual space where God’s sovereignty and presence is, where the ascended Lord is, and we are told to look to that Heaven, to look above.

When you say, ‘Who are you?’ That’s called identity. What kind of person is a believer? Do you remember three things? First, a dignified being made in the image of God. Like God, he or she has reason and free will and is able to commune with God. Second, a believer is known by God. Third, we are in Christ. What is the most important, necessary thing for these people to do, given their identity, given their sonship? Nothing could be more important than to look to the God of heaven and listen to His voice.

I said earlier that it should be exhilarating to be told to lift up our eyes and look to heaven, but when you lift up your eyes and see the sovereignty and providence and help of the God of heaven, it’s strange not to be exhilarated. I hope this sentence, “Lift up your eyes and look to heaven,” doesn’t sound trite.

It should come to us with a “thump” and a heart-stopping resonance because the power and the way to restore our hearts and our faith, darkened by tears, by upsets, by the weight and shadow of life, happens when we “lift up our eyes and look to heaven. How wonderful it would be to have the heart and appearance of Moses when he lifted up his hands and looked at the sky with longing. Let’s try.

2.A life of lifting our eyes to see the sky
Let’s look at just two mindsets for lifting our eyes to see the heavens: one is a matter of order, and the other is a matter of optimism. Both are matters that believers who live their lives without seeing the heavens need to think carefully about.

(1) Change the order in which you look.
The first issue is one of order. In the grand scheme of things, our personal identity is built through three “sees”. One is yourself, the second is your surroundings, and the third is “above. The self is what you see within yourself, the in, the surrounding is the world, and the above is the ‘sky’, the ‘spiritual world’.

The normal way to do Who Am I is to look at yourself, then look at your surroundings, and finally look up. The order is me – surroundings – above. It’s almost a set order. Even believers mostly follow this order. But the Bible doesn’t follow this order. The order of faith is up, around, and me. This isn’t to say that we should ignore personal autonomy and the influence of our surroundings. It’s to say that we should look up first, then look around us and our community, and finally look at ourselves.

The biblical worldview has a clear view that God is first, not me, and the reason I am not first is that I am God’s creation and therefore I should not be the center of attention. I feel bad about not being the center, I resist it strongly, but that’s why it asks me to look up.

It would be nice to be in charge of my life, to be in charge of myself, to live the way I want to live, but with an inescapable sinful nature, I don’t have the skills to do that. No one can live the way they want to live, and even if they did, who’s to say they lived well?

If you look at history, from Eden to the Tower of Babel to the fall of Israel, there’s one reason why things fell apart. That’s what the Bible testifies to: living as we please, doing as we please. The message is always the same: “We are creatures, and as creatures, we need to humble ourselves before our Creator, and not start with ourselves, but live as image-bearers of God, as people known by God, with our eyes on God. This is the best life. You are not the center of the universe’.

If I start with me, I’m looking for someone to approve of me, and I’m in a hurry to make God to my liking. Repentance is not something else. The best repentance is to change your order of seeing. The best repentance is when you go from looking at yourself and your surroundings to looking up. It’s about recognizing God as the center, not the means. When we move from looking upward, to looking around us, to looking at ourselves, we create a healthier self, a healthier family, and a healthier society. When we start with me, we lose control of our selfish human desires.

Lift your eyes and look at the sky. Isn’t it thrilling and exhilarating? The life of a believer is ‘heavenly flesh’ every day. Seeing the heavens, hearing the sounds of the heavens, and creating the will of the heavens here on earth is the life of the ‘heavenly flesh’. It is a life that looks up first, then looks around, then looks at oneself.

The power of heavenly living is very great. Before being stoned and martyred, Deacon Stephen, who was a heavenly man, looked up to the sky and exclaimed, “The sky is open. I see Jesus’. As he is stoned to death, he prays that his sins will not be held against him. In the poem ‘Foreword’, the poet Yoon Dong-ju sings, ‘May I look up to the sky until the day I die and not be ashamed of a single thing’. In a shameful world, the only way to avoid shame is to look up to the heavens. The poet of Psalm 121 sings, “Lift up your eyes and look to the mountains. From whence comes your help. To the Lord who made you, who made the heavens and the earth.’

If you’ve been looking only at the here and now, at you and your surroundings, I invite you to look up, to the sky, to God, for strength, for direction, for help, to lift up your hands, to pray. He will lead you to the best path, a rewarding life used for His kingdom.

(2) Reject optimism.
The second condition for seeing the heavens is to reject false optimism. There is pessimism, and there is optimism. People like optimism more than pessimism, but optimism is just as dangerous as pessimism.

We’ve all been there, life is not easy. ‘I don’t know what tomorrow will bring’. Do you know what’s going to happen tomorrow? There are too many landmines and pitfalls around every corner for us to be lulled into a false sense of security that things are going to be okay, that things are going to be fine, that things are going to be okay, without any evidence.

Optimism is necessary, but it shouldn’t be easy. People of faith are good at naive optimism, but don’t mistake optimism for faith. Optimism that is based on one’s mood is not faith. Optimism is based on a deep trust in God, a clear knowledge of God’s will, and once we know the will, we can have a “crucifixion and resurrection” optimism when we abandon complacency and live our daily heavenly life with spiritual diligence.

The biggest problem with reckless optimism is “not lifting our eyes to heaven,” which is a bigger problem than prayer because not lifting our eyes to heaven is a lack of orientation toward God.

I don’t know if it’s because I have too much faith, but optimism that doesn’t look to the sky, optimism that doesn’t constantly go to God, is a failure for those with a heavenly identity, even if things go well. Real optimism is not the optimism that comes from complacent expectations. Optimism is an outpouring of grace, a gift that comes from lifting our eyes to God, being with God in every moment, and listening to God.

Beware of premature optimism, and beware of hasty pessimism. Which one are you better at? Both are poison to the soul. Even if you can handle it, even if things are tough, you must live as one who is In Christ, who is in Christ, who looks to the heavens, who is Known by God.

May you have in your life the boldness, strength, patience, love, and endurance of those who have lifted up their eyes and seen the heavens. Lift up your eyes and see the heavens.
