로마서 3:21-31: 믿음이란 무엇인가?

1. 믿음의 무게와 흔들림

오늘은 ‘믿음’에 대해 나누겠습니다. 저는 어린 시절부터 교회에서 자라며 ‘믿음’이란 단어를 수없이 듣고, 보고, 말해왔습니다. 신학을 공부하면서부터는 매일 접하는 단어가 믿음이었습니다. 하루 100번 정도라고 계산하면, 1년이면 36,500번, 60년이면 219만 번입니다. 엄청난 숫자죠.

이렇게 많이 접했다면 믿음이 얼마나 단단해야 할까요? 폭풍 속에서도 흔들리지 않고, 시련 앞에서도 무너지지 않아야 할 텐데, 부끄럽게도 자주 흔들리고 실패합니다. 여러분도 그렇지 않으신가요? 다니엘보다는 낙심한 엘리야나 주님을 배신한 베드로 같은 때가 많습니다.

신자에게 믿음은 언제나 숙제입니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 믿음을 주셨고, 이 믿음으로 하나님과 연결되기를 원하신다면, 산을 옮길 만한 믿음, 바랄 수 없는 중에도 바라는 믿음을 원하실 것입니다. 흔들리지 않는 꽃은 없다고 합니다. 믿음도 흔들릴 수 있지만, 흔들리며 더 강해지길 바랍니다.

신자에게 믿음은 중요합니다. 그러니 제대로 알아야 합니다. 무엇을 믿는지, 왜 믿는지, 제대로 믿고 있는지, 하나님을 믿는다면서 다른 것을 믿는 건 아닌지, 믿음으로 무엇을 노리는지. 간단치 않은 질문들이지만, 답이 필요한 물음들입니다. 이 질문들을 마음에 품는 것만으로도 믿음을 돌아보는 데 도움이 됩니다.

2. 믿음의 본질과 구원의 길

(1) 믿음, 어둠 속의 빛

오늘 본문은 로마서에서도, 성경 전체에서도 중요한 구절입니다. 바울은 지금까지 모든 인류가 죄 아래 있으며, 의인은 없다고 말했습니다. 이방인도, 율법을 가진 유대인도 하나님의 심판을 피할 수 없습니다. 이는 어둠의 이야기입니다.

하지만 하나님은 이 어둠을 그냥 두지 않으십니다. 모든 인류가 죄 아래 있지만, 어둠 속에 빛이 비치니 그 빛을 바라보고 붙잡으라고 하십니다. 이야기는 오염 서사(비극, “결국 망할 거야”)와 구원 서사(“결국 잘 될 거야”)로 나뉩니다. 오염 서사는 ‘나’를 주어로 할 때, 구원 서사는 ‘하나님’을 주어로 할 때 나옵니다.

성경과 복음은 구원 서사입니다. 죄로 인해 희망이 없지만, 하나님께서 구원하시고 회복하셔서 하나님의 나라가 이루어진다는 희망이 복음입니다. 현실 속에서 구원 서사를 유지하기는 쉽지 않습니다. 삶에 치이면 오염 서사가 마음을 지배해 믿음, 사랑, 희망을 잃게 만듭니다. 이런 상황에서 바울이 “그러나 이제는”이라는 구원 서사를 전하니 감사하고 감동적입니다.

로마서 3장 21절은 칠흑 같은 밤에서 밝은 새벽으로 전환되는 구절입니다. 하나님 앞에서 어떤 행위로도 의롭게 될 수 없지만, ‘이제는’ 하나님께서 의롭게 되는 길, 죄에서 구원받는 길을 열어 주셨다고 바울은 선포합니다.

“사실 모든 사람이 죄를 지어서 하나님의 영광에 다다르지 못하는 처지에 있습니다. 그런데 그들은 아무런 대가 없이 하나님의 은혜로 의롭다고 판결받게 된 것입니다. 하나님이 그리스도 예수님 안에서 그들을 죄로부터 풀어 주신 덕분입니다.” (롬 3:23-24, 새한글)

바울의 말은 한마디로 희망입니다. “빛이 보인다. 하나님이 마련하신 길을 믿고 가라. 그러면 된다.” 이 길은 예수 그리스도, 즉 십자가에서 죽기까지 신실하셨던 예수의 죽음과 부활입니다. 이를 믿음으로 받아들이고 주님으로 따를 때 구원이 이루어집니다.

(2) 믿음이란 무엇인가?

믿음은 자기 확신(“나는 할 수 있어!”)이나 자기 최면(“주님이 도와주실 거야”)이 아닙니다. 긍정적인 마음은 좋지만, 이는 믿음이 아니라 심리적 기술일 뿐입니다. 믿음은 신념과 비슷하지만, 신념도 아닙니다. 이단들도 강한 신념을 가지지만, 잘못된 신념은 믿음이 될 수 없습니다.

성경을 인정하고 하나님을 아는 것도 믿음이 아닙니다. 야고보서 2장은 “귀신들도 하나님을 알고 떠든다”고 말합니다. 알기만 하고 따르지 않으면 믿음이 아닙니다.

성경에서 말하는 믿음은 매 순간 하나님을 신뢰하고, 하나님의 뜻에 순종하는 삶 전체입니다. 믿음은 소원을 이루어주는 마법의 열쇠가 아닙니다. 간절히 믿는다고 부자가 되거나 만사형통하지 않습니다. 성경의 믿음은 훨씬 깊은 뜻을 가집니다.

믿음이 필요한 이유는 우리가 하나님과 대등하지 않기 때문입니다. 하나님은 무한하시고 우리는 유한하며, 하나님은 전지하시지만 우리는 부분만 알 수 있습니다.

(3) 믿음의 신비한 힘

하나님은 우리의 이성으로 다 알 수 없는 존재입니다. 믿음은 하나님을 이해하고 만날 수 있는 길, 하나님과 나를 연결하는 다리입니다. 히브리서 11장 3절은 이렇게 말합니다:

“믿음으로 모든 세계가 하나님의 말씀으로 지어진 줄을 우리가 아나니…” 하나님은 보이는 것을 알도록 이성을, 보이지 않는 것을 알도록 믿음을 주셨습니다. 믿음은 하나님과 관계할 수 있는 유일한 통로입니다. 이는 우격다짐이나 지식의 한계를 핑계 삼는 수단이 아니라, 이성보다 깊은 진리를 알게 하는 신비한 힘입니다.

믿음은 자유와 평안을 주고, 포기하지 않고 버티는 힘을 줍니다. 눈물 속에서도 감사하고, 넘어져도 다시 일어나며, 뜻대로 되지 않아도 주님의 뜻이라 말할 수 있는 힘이 있습니다. 하나님은 예수 그리스도의 순종을 통해 믿음을 주셨고, 은혜로 의롭게 하심을 보여 주셨습니다. 믿음은 하나님의 신비한 선물입니다.

3. 믿음의 싸움을 포기하지 말라

믿음은 흔들릴 수 있습니다. 하지만 하나님에 대한 고백, 죄에 대한 의식, 하나님에 대한 감사와 두려움이 있다면 구원이 있는 자입니다. 믿음의 싸움을 포기하지 말고, 하나님께서 주신 믿음의 길을 걸어가길 바랍니다.

Romans 3:21-31: What Is Faith?

1. The Weight and Wavering of Faith

Today, we will discuss the topic of “faith,” a word often fraught with complexity. Growing up in the church, I’ve heard, seen, and spoken the word “faith” countless times. Since studying theology, it’s been a daily companion. If I estimate hearing or saying it 100 times a day, that’s 36,500 times a year, and over 60 years, about 2.19 million times. An astonishing number! 

With such exposure, shouldn’t my faith be unshakable? It should stand firm amidst storms and trials, yet I’m ashamed to admit it often wavers and fails. Don’t you experience this too? We’re often more like discouraged Elijah or Peter who betrayed Jesus than steadfast Daniel. 

For believers, faith is an ongoing challenge, a topic requiring deep reflection. If God has given His people faith to connect with Him, He desires us to live with faith that moves mountains, faith that hopes against hope. As the saying goes, no flower blooms without swaying. Faith, too, may waver but can grow stronger through it. 

Faith is vital for believers, so we must understand it well. What do we believe? Why do we believe? Are we believing rightly? Do we claim to believe in God while trusting something else? What are we aiming for with faith? These aren’t simple questions, but pondering them helps us examine our faith. 

2. The Essence of Faith and the Path to Salvation

(1) Faith, light in the darkness

Today’s passage is crucial, not only in Romans but in the entire Bible. Paul has been describing a dark reality: all humanity is under sin, with no one righteous—not even one. Neither Gentiles without God nor Jews with the Law can escape God’s judgment. This is a story of darkness. 

But God doesn’t leave us in this darkness. Though all are under sin, a light shines in the darkness, and God calls us to look to and grasp that light. Stories are divided into contamination narratives (“It’ll all end in tragedy”) and redemptive narratives (“It’ll all work out”). Contamination narratives arise when “I” am the subject; redemptive narratives emerge when “God” is. 

The Bible and the gospel are redemptive narratives. Though sin leaves us hopeless, God saves and restores, bringing the hope of His kingdom. Living with a redemptive narrative isn’t easy in reality. Life’s hardships can let contamination narratives dominate, robbing us of faith, love, and hope.

In this context, Paul’s “but now” in Romans 3:21 is deeply moving, marking a shift from pitch-black night to bright dawn. 

No one can be justified by works before God, but “now” God has opened a way to be made righteous, a path to salvation from sin. 

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:23-24, NIV) 

Paul’s message is one of hope: “There is light. Trust and follow the path God has provided, and it will be enough.” This path is Jesus Christ—His faithful death on the cross and resurrection. When we accept this not as foolishness but through faith, following Him as our Lord, salvation happens. 

(2) What Is Faith?

Faith isn’t self-confidence (“I can do it!”) or self-hypnosis (“God will make everything okay”). Positive thinking is good, but it’s merely a psychological technique, not faith. Faith resembles conviction but isn’t that either. Even cults have strong convictions, but misguided convictions aren’t faith. 

Acknowledging the Bible or God’s existence isn’t faith either. James 2 says, “Even the demons believe that God exists—and shudder.” Knowing without following isn’t faith. 

Biblical faith is trusting God in every moment and living in obedience to His will. It’s not a magic key to fulfill desires. Believing fervently doesn’t make you rich or ensure everything goes smoothly. Biblical faith has a far deeper meaning. 

We need faith because we are not equal to God. He is infinite; we are finite. He is all-knowing; we know only in part. 

(3) The Mysterious Power of Faith

God is beyond our full comprehension. Faith is His gift to us, a way to understand and meet Him despite our limitations. It’s like a bridge connecting us to God. Hebrews 11:3 says: “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command…” 

God gave us reason to understand the visible and faith to know the invisible. Faith is the only channel for relating to God. It’s not blind insistence or an excuse for ignorance but a mysterious power revealing deeper truths than reason can. 

Faith is stronger than reason. It gives freedom and peace, the strength to persevere, to give thanks in tears, to rise after falling, and to say, “It’s the Lord’s will,” even when things don’t go our way.

Through the historical event of Jesus Christ, God gave us faith, showing through Christ’s obedience that He justifies us by grace. Faith is God’s mysterious gift. 

3. Don’t Give Up the Fight of Faith

Faith can waver. Yet if you confess God, are aware of sin, and have gratitude and reverence for Him, you are one with salvation. Don’t abandon the fight of faith. May we walk the path of faith God has given without giving up.
