로마서 22: 아브라함을 보라 (롬 4:17~25)

1.  무엇을 자랑하는가?

예레미야서 9장 23~24절 말씀을 읽으면서 오늘 말씀 시작하겠습니다. “여호와께서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. 지혜로운 사람은 지혜를 자랑하지 마라! 힘센 사람은 힘센 것을 자랑하지 마라! 부유한 사람은 부유함을 자랑하지 마라! 자랑하려는 사람이 자랑할 것은 이것이다. 깨달음이 있어서 나를 아는 것이다.”

남유다가 멸망하기 직전에 주신 말씀입니다. 추측해 보면 나라가 망해 가는 때인데도 이런 사람들이 많았던 것으로 보입니다. 예레미야 선지자가 볼 때는 미치고 펄쩍 뛸 일입니다. 결국 유다는 좋은 머리 자랑하고, 가진 힘 자랑하고, 가진 재산 자랑하다가 망하게 됩니다. 하나님의 백성인 그들이 뭘 자랑해야 했습니까? 하나님이 친히 말씀해 주셨습니다. 나를 자랑해라.

    신자는 하나님으로 사는 사람이기에 하나님을 자랑해야 합니다. 하나님을 자랑한다는 것은 삶의 무게를 하나님께 두는 것입니다. 삶의 의미와 희망과 중심이 하나님께 있다는 말입니다. 삶의 중심이 하나님께 있으려면 하나님을 알아야 합니다. 하나님을 알 때 하나님을 향한 믿음과 신뢰가 생기고, 믿음이 주는 신비한 힘을 가지고 하루도 편할 날 없는 세상에서 무너지지 않고 살아낼 수 있습니다.

지난주에 봤지만 바울이 3장 마지막에서 강조하는 것은 ‘믿음’입니다. ‘누구도 하나님의 심판에서 벗어날 수 없다. 그러나 이제는 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 모든 사람은 차별 없이 의롭게 될 수 있다’는 선포를 합니다. 그리고 4장에서 꺼내든 카드가 ‘믿음의 조상’이라고 부르는 아브라함입니다. ‘아브라함을 봐라. 아브라함이 행위로 의롭게 된 것이 아니다. 믿음으로 의롭게 된 것이다. 이 믿음은 아브라함이 잘나서 가진 믿음이 아니다. 하나님이 은혜로 주신 믿음이다’. 이 믿음으로 아브라함은 이제 보게 될 놀라운 믿음을 가질 수 있었던 것입니다.

2.  믿음의 본보기: 아브라함

오늘 말씀 제목이 ‘아브라함을 보라’인데, 여기서 아브라함을 보라는 것은 아브라함이 잘나서 보라는 것이 아니고 아브라함을 통해 일하시는 하나님의 은혜가 아브라함을 어떤 자로 만드는지를 보라는 것입니다. 아브라함을 잘 보면 하나님이 원하시는 믿음의 모습이 나옵니다.

    (1) 길 여시는 하나님을 믿는 믿음

첫 번째 믿음은 4장 17절에 나옵니다. “그가 믿은 바 하나님은 죽은 자를 살리시며 없는 것을 있는 것으로 부르시는 이시니라.” 아브라함의 믿음은 막힌 길을 여시는 하나님을 믿는 믿음입니다.

아브라함은 고향을 떠나 새 땅에 가면 큰 민족을 이루고 복을 주겠다는 약속을 받았습니다(창 12:1~3). 75세에 시작된 여정입니다. 25년이 흘렀지만 아무 일도 일어나지 않았습니다. 어떤 가능성도, 어떤 희망도 보이지 않는 막힌 길이었습니다. 하지만 이상합니다. 길이 막혔는데도 그런 현실에 갇히지 않습니다. 오히려, ‘죽은 자를 살리고’, ‘없는 것을 있는 것’으로 부르시는 하나님을 신뢰합니다.

길이 막혔을 때 여러분은 어떻게 하셨습니까? 하나님이 원망스럽지 않으셨습니까? 원망스러웠을 것입니다. 하지만 아브라함을 통해 하나님은 말씀하십니다. ‘나를 봐라. 길이 막혔다고 세상 끝난 것 처럼 생각하지 마라. 나는 죽은 자를 살릴 수 있고, 무에서 유를 만들어 낼 수 있다. 이것을 믿느냐?’ 믿을 수 있다면 ‘막힌 길’ 앞에서 주저앉는 대신 망치 들고 일어서서 하나하나 격파해 나갈 것입니다.

이사야 43장 15~19절은 하나님이 친히 하신 말씀입니다. ‘나는 주, 너희의 거룩한 하나님이며 이스라엘의 창조자요, 너희의 왕이다. 내가 바다 가운데 길을 내고 거센 물결 위에 통로를 냈다. 내가 병거와 말과 병력과 용사들을 모두 이끌어 내어 쓰러뜨려서 다시는 일어나지 못하게 하고 그들을 마치 꺼져가는 등잔 심지같이 꺼버렸다. 나 주가 말한다. 내가 이제 새 일을 하려고 한다. 내가 광야에 길을 내겠으며, 사막에 강을 내겠다’. 막힌 길 때문에 하나님을 원망하지도 말고, 무너지지도 마십시다. 없는 길도 만드시는 것이 하나님입니다. 없는 길도 만드시는 하나님을 믿는 것이 믿음입니다. 길이 막힐 때마다 이 믿음을 놓치지 않기를 바랍니다.

    (2) 절망 속 믿음

두 번째 아브라함이 보여준 믿음은 절망 가운데서도 하나님을 놓지 않는 믿음입니다. 절망은 믿음을 깎아먹는 벌레입니다. 절망하는 순간 불신과 원망과 의심의 벌레들이 달려들어 믿음을 파먹어 버립니다. 절망과 어둠의 순간에 가장 필요한 게 믿음인데 믿음을 방어하지 못할 때가 태반입니다.

19절에 도전이 되는 아브라함의 모습이 나옵니다. ‘그가 백 세나 되어 자기 몸이 죽은 것 같고 사라의 태가 죽은 것 같음을 알고도 믿음이 약하여지지 아니하고’. 아브라함은 100살, 사라는 90살입니다. 임신 가능성 제로나 마찬가지입니다. 당신 약속 하나 믿고 버텼는데 이루어진 것은 아무것도 없습니다. 기운 빠질 만합니다.

늘 경험하는 거지만 현실은 냉혹합니다. 하지만 믿음이 뭔지 그런 상황에서도 하나님을 놓지 않게 합니다. 19절 끝을 다시 보십시오. ‘죽은 것 같음을 알고도 믿음이 약하여 지지 않았다’, 믿음이 흔들리지 않았다. 충격적인 진술입니다. 아브라함이 흔들리지 않았던 것은 그의 믿음이 소원하는 대상에 있지 않고, 하나님께 있었기 때문에 흔들리지 않았던 것입니다. 자신의 소원보다 하나님을 더 믿고 신뢰했던 것입니다.

‘하나님은 거짓말하지 않으셔. 약속한 게 있잖아’. 당장의 상황보다 모든 것을 통제하고, 지배하시는 하나님을 볼 수 있었던 것입니다. 믿음을 무엇을 얻어내는 수단으로 알게 되면 십중팔구 흔들립니다. 믿음은 소원을 관철시키는 고집이 아닙니다. 히브리서 11장 6절에 “믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 못하나니 하나님께 나아가는 자는 반드시 그가 계신 것과 또한 그가 자기를 찾는 자들에게 상 주시는 이심을 믿어야 할지니라” 말씀합니다. 믿음은 처음부터 끝까지 ‘하나님을 신뢰하는 것’입니다. 이 믿음이 더 많아지면 좋겠습니다. 원하는 게 이루어지지 않으면 힘 빠지지만 하나님이 계시다는 것, 잊지 마십시다.

    (3) 포기하지 않는 믿음

세 번째 하나님이 원하시고, 아브라함이 보여준 믿음은 포기하지 않는 믿음입니다. 한 단어 더 붙이면 ‘끝까지 포기하지 않는 믿음’입니다(롬 4:20~21). 아브라함은 보이지 않아도 믿었고, 이루어지지 않아도 하나님을 붙들었습니다.

4장 20절에 아브라함이 보여준 믿음의 결론이 나옵니다. ‘그는 하나님의 약속을 믿고 의심하지 않았습니다. 오히려 그는 믿음이 굳세어져서 하나님께 영광을 돌렸습니다. 그는 하나님께서 스스로 약속하신 바를 능히 이루실 것이라고 확신하였습니다’. 하나도 버릴 게 없는 말씀입니다. 이 구절이 여러분의 신앙 인생이 만들어내는 결론이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

요즘은 믿음도 쉽게 포기하고, 체념하는 시대입니다. 그럴수록 달려갈 길을 포기하지 않고 끝까지 달려가게 되면 하나님도 빛나고 그런 나도 빛나게 될 것입니다. 믿음은 막연히 잘 될 거라는 기대가 아닙니다. 당장의 결과를 얻어내는 기술도 아닙니다. ‘그리아니하실지라도.’ 어떤 순간에도 포기하지 않고 하나님을 신뢰하는 마음의 고백이 믿음이고, 믿음의 능력입니다.

고린도전서 15장 58절에 “그러므로 내 사랑하는 형제들아 견실하여 흔들리지 말고 항상 주의 일에 더욱 힘쓰는 자들이 되라 이는 너희 수고가 주 안에서 헛되지 않은 줄 앎이라” 말씀합니다.

보신 것 처럼 믿음이 이런 것이라면 믿음은 자랑해야 하고, 자랑할 만합니다. 믿음은 길을 열어주고, 절망을 이기게 하고, 포기하지 않게 하는 하나님이 주신 힘이고, 은혜입니다.

제목은 아브라함의 믿음을 보라고 했지만 정말 봐야 할 것은 아브라함의 믿음 너머에 계신 하나님을 봐야 합니다. 하나님은 아브라함의 믿음을 보고 일하신 게 아닙니다. 아브라함이 백세가 되고, 아내의 태가 닫힌 것을 알고도 믿음이 약해지지 않은 것은 하나님은 그를 놓아주지 않으신 것이고, 그의 외적인 조건은 문제가 될 수 없다는 것을 보여 주신 것입니다.

믿음은 내가 원하는 것을 얻어내는 조건이 아닙니다. 하나님의 손을 끝까지 놓지 않겠다는 하나님을 향한 신뢰입니다. 아브라함의 모습을 보면서 하나님을 신뢰하는 것이 얼마나 큰 것인지를 가슴 벅차게 느껴야 합니다. 하나님은 우리에게 있는 어떤 실패도, 어떤 절망도 뒤집을 수 있다는 것을 놓치지 마십시다. 우리는 아브라함처럼 복의 근원입니다. 여러분을 축복하는 자를 하나님이 복을 주십니다. 여러분을 저주하고 우습게 보는 자를 하나님이 저주하실 것입니다. 우리는 그런 존재입니다.

그러니 가슴 펴고 신자답게, 믿음으로 살아가십시다. 세상이 자랑하는 믿음에 움츠러들지 말고, 하나님을 향한 믿음을 자랑하며 살아가는 하늘의 별처럼 빛나는 여러분의 인생이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

Romans 22: Look at Abraham (Romans 4:17~25)

1.  What do we boast in?

Let’s begin today’s message by reading a verse from Jeremiah 9:23-24: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me.'”

These words were given just before the destruction of Southern Judah. It seems that even as the nation was falling apart, many people still held onto such boasts. “The nation is falling? What nonsense. Who cares if the nation falls? If I’m smart, if I’m strong, if I have money, it doesn’t matter. God? What God!”

To Jeremiah the prophet, it must have been maddening. Ultimately, Judah was destroyed because they boasted in their cleverness, their strength, and their wealth. What should God’s people have boasted in? God Himself told them: boast in me.

Believers live by God, so they must boast in God. To boast in God means to place the weight of our lives on God. To place the weight of our lives on God means that the meaning, hope, and center of our lives are in God.

For God to be the center of our lives, we must know God. When we know God, faith and trust in God arise, and with the mysterious power that faith gives, we can endure and live through a world where not a single day is peaceful.

As we saw last week, what Paul emphasizes at the end of Chapter 3 is ‘faith’. He proclaims: ‘No one can escape God’s judgment. But now, by faith in Jesus Christ, all people can be justified without distinction.’ And the card he pulls out in Chapter 4 is Abraham, whom we call the ‘father of faith’. ‘Look at Abraham. Abraham was not justified by works. He was justified by faith. This faith was not something Abraham had because he was great. It was a faith given by God’s grace.’ With this faith, Abraham was able to have the astonishing faith we are about to see.

2.  A Model of Faith: Abraham

Today’s sermon title is ‘Look at Abraham,’ and this doesn’t mean to look at Abraham because he was great, but to look at the grace of God working through Abraham, which made him who he was. If we look closely at Abraham, we will see the kind of faith God desires.

(1) Faith in God who opens the way

The first kind of faith appears in Romans 4:17: “The God whom he believed is the one who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.” Abraham’s faith is a faith in God who opens blocked paths.

Abraham received a promise that if he left his homeland for a new land, God would make him into a great nation and bless him (Genesis 12:1-3). This journey began when he was 75 years old. He left not knowing where to go or what to do. Twenty-five years passed, and nothing happened. It was a blocked path with no possibility or hope in sight. But it’s strange. Even though the path was blocked, he wasn’t trapped by that reality. Instead, he trusted God, who ‘gives life to the dead’ and ‘calls into being things that were not.’

What did you do when your path was blocked? Didn’t you resent God? You probably did. But through Abraham, God speaks: ‘Look at me. Don’t think the world is over just because your path is blocked. I can raise the dead and create something out of nothing. Do you believe this?’ If you can believe this, instead of sitting down in front of a ‘blocked path,’ you will pick up a hammer and break through it, one by one.

Isaiah 43:15-19 are words spoken by God Himself: ‘I am the Lord, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator, your King. I made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters. I drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements, and they fell, never to rise again; they were snuffed out, snuffed out like a flickering wick. This is what the Lord says: I am doing a new thing. I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.’ (Meaning, He will make a way where there can be no way.) Let us not resent God or collapse because of blocked paths. God is the one who makes paths where there are none. To believe in God who makes paths where there are none is faith. I hope you will not lose this faith whenever your path is blocked.

(2) Faith in Despair

The second type of faith Abraham showed is not letting go of God even in despair. Despair is a worm that eats away at faith. The moment we despair, worms of unbelief, resentment, and doubt rush in and devour our faith. Faith is most needed in moments of despair and darkness, but most of the time we fail to defend it.

In verse 19, a challenging aspect of Abraham appears: ‘And without weakening in faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.’ Abraham was not a fool. Abraham was 100 years old, and Sarah was 90. The possibility of pregnancy was virtually zero. He had held on, believing in one promise, but nothing had come to pass. It was enough to make him lose heart.

As we always experience, reality is harsh. But faith, whatever it may be, prevents him from letting go of God even in such circumstances. Look at the end of verse 19 again: ‘Knowing that he was as good as dead, his faith did not weaken.’ His faith did not waver. This is a shocking statement. Why didn’t Abraham waver? Perhaps if the purpose of Abraham’s faith had been a child, he would have wavered. It would be strange if he hadn’t wavered.

Abraham did not waver because his faith was not in the object of his desire, but in God. He believed and trusted God more than his own desire. ‘God does not lie. He made a promise.’ He was able to see God, who controls and governs everything, beyond the immediate situation.

If we understand faith as a means to obtain what we want, we will almost certainly waver. Faith is not stubbornness to get our wishes fulfilled. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Faith, from beginning to end, is ‘trusting God.’ I hope this faith will grow stronger. It’s discouraging when what we want doesn’t happen, but let’s not forget that God exists.

(3) Unwavering Faith

The third type of faith God desires, and which Abraham demonstrated, is an unwavering faith. To add another word, it is ‘faith that never gives up to the end’ (Romans 4:20-21). Abraham believed even when he could not see, and he held onto God even when things did not come to pass.

In Romans 4:20, the conclusion of Abraham’s faith is presented: ‘He did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.’ There is not a single word to be thrown away in this verse. I pray that this verse will become the conclusion that your spiritual life produces.

Nowadays, it is an era where faith is easily given up and resigned. The more this happens, the more shining God will be, and the more shining we will be, if we do not give up and run the race to the end. Faith is not a vague expectation that things will turn out well. It is not a technique to get immediate results. It is the confession of heart, ‘Even if He does not,’ never giving up and trusting God in any moment, and that is the power of faith.

1 Corinthians 15:58 says, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

As you have seen, if faith is such a thing, then faith should be boasted in, and it is worth boasting in. Faith is a power and grace given by God that opens paths, overcomes despair, and keeps us from giving up.

Although the title says to look at Abraham’s faith, what we truly need to see is God beyond Abraham’s faith. God did not work because of Abraham’s faith. The fact that Abraham’s faith did not weaken even when he was a hundred years old and his wife’s womb was dead shows that God did not let him go, and his external conditions could not be a problem.

Faith is not a condition to obtain what I want. It is trust in God, that I will not let go of God’s hand until the very end. Looking at Abraham, we must feel deeply how great it is to trust God. Let us not forget that God can overturn any failure, any despair we may have. We are sources of blessing, just like Abraham. God will bless those who bless you. God will curse those who curse you and despise you. We are such beings.

So, let us stand tall and live like believers, by faith. Do not shrink back from the faith the world boasts in, but live boasting in your faith towards God, and may your life shine like the stars in the sky.
