출애굽 이야기 34: 선한 영향력에 도전하라(출18:1~12)

1.가족의 재결합
출애굽기 18장 말씀, 오늘 보도록 하겠습니다. 18장에는 모세와 모세의 장인 이드로의 티키타카, 주고 받음이 잘 드러나 있습니다. 그 동안 모세는 바람 잘 날 없었습니다. 광야로 나오자마자 먹을게 없다, 마실 물 없다하면서 원망하는 사람들로 고역을 치뤘습니다. 설상가상, 아말렉이 침입해서 큰 일 날뻔 하기도 했습니다. 그때마다 모세는 홀로 하나님과 대면하면서 피곤한 싸움을 하게 됩니다.

그러던 어느날 반가운 전갈이 장인으로 부터옵니다. 6절. ‘네 장인 나 이드로가 네 아내와 두 아들과 함께 가고 있다’. 이들이 어느 정도 떨어져 있었는지 정확히 알 수 없습니다. 짧으면 몇 개월, 길면 1년 이상 인 것으로 보고 있습니다. 우리 시대의 기러기 아빠들에 비하면 긴 시간이라고는 할 수 없지만 전쟁터같은 위험천만한 곳에 갔기에 별탈 없이 모든 가족이 다시 만난다는 것은 기쁘고, 힘이 되는 일임에는 분명합니다.

이 때 모세의 나이 80초반, 부인인 십보라는 60전후, 첫 아들은 30대 후반, 둘 째 아들은 30대 초반, 장인인 이드로는 90전후반 정도되는 나이로 추정하고 있습니다. 적지 않은 나이기에 더 애틋한 재회였을 것입니다. 간혹 모세와 십보라의 사이가 좋지 않은 것으로 해석하는 경우가 있는데 저는 동의하지 않는 해석입니다.

이 일을 누가 주도합니까? 모세의 장인, 미디안 족속의 제사장, 이드로가 주도합니다. 인생을 길게 산 사람의 선견지명과 식견을 가지고 이제 때가 된듯해서 집에 와 있는 딸 가족을 데리고 모세에게 갑니다. 성경은 자세히 묘사하고 있지 않지만 가족과 재회한 모세가 받은 위로와 응원은 상당했을 것입니다. 그동안 욕도 많이 먹고, 피곤하고 외로왔을텐데 이제는 응원하는 자가 옆에 있고, 알아주는 이가 옆에 있게 된 것입니다. 가장 필요하고 적절한 시점에 이드로가 가족을 데려다 준 것입니다.

2.선한 영향력
(1) 이드로의 선한 영향력
오늘 제목에 보면 ‘선한 영향력’이란 말이 나오는데 이드로는 모세에게 선한 영향력을 끼치고 있습니다. 이드로가 준 것은 이것만이 아닙니다. 13절부터 보면 이드로가 모세에게 준 선한 영향력, 하나가 더 나옵니다. 이드로는 출애굽한 이스라엘 백성과 모세의 삶에 결정적인 영향을 미치는 조언을 하나 합니다.

이드로가 난민촌 같은 야영지에서 며칠 지내다, 사방 팔방 정신 없이 뛰어다니는 모세를 보면서 한 마디 합니다. ‘혼자 다하면 힘들어서 못한다. 천부장, 백부장, 오십부장, 십부장(18:21)을 세워 나눠서 다스리게 하라’. 재판도 나눠서 하고, 통솔도 나눠서 하라는 것입니다.

영향력은 타자의 삶과, 행동에 영향을 미치기 때문에 중요합니다. 맹모삼천지교. 맹자의 어머니가 이사를 세 번 한 것도 좋은 영향을 받게 하고 싶어서 한 것입니다. 사람이 무소의 뿔 처럼 흔들림 없이 혼자 가면 좋겠지만 사람은 흔들리는 갈대 같아서 나쁜 영향 받으면 나빠지고, 선한 영향 받으면 좋아지기에 선한 영향력을 주고 받는 게 그렇지 않은 것보다 좋을 수 밖에 없습니다.

(2) 모세의 선한 영향력
본문에 보면 선한 영향력은 이드로만 주지 않습니다. 장인의 배려와 격려를 받은 모세도이드로에게 선한 영향력을 끼칩니다. 어떤 영향력을 끼칩니까? 이방 세계의 제사장인 장인에게 좋은 소식, 복음을 전해 하나님을 예배하는 자(12절. 번제와 희생 제물을 드리는)가 되게 합니다.

8절에 보면 모세가 그동안 자신에게 일어났던 일을 오랜 시간 공들여 설명합니다. 공들여 설명한 것은 이방신의 제사장인 이드로가 아직 하나님을 믿지 않았기 때문입니다. 이드로는 이스라엘의 하나님이 자신들이 숭배하는 신처럼 부족신 정도로만 알고 있는 상태입니다. 그런 이드로에게 모세는 출애굽하면서 자신이 직접 보고 경험했던 놀라운 하나님의 구원을 하나하나 말해줍니다.

막강한 바로가 저항할 때마다 하나님이 어떻게 하셨고, 마지막에는 죽음의 사자가 애굽을 치고, 자신들은 어린양의 피로 구원받아 애굽을 떠나고, 떠난 그들에게 구름기둥과 불기둥이 나타나 인도하고, 홍해가 갈라지고, 물이 없고 먹을 게 없어 고통을 겪을 때 마실 물과 만나를 주시고, 아말렉의 공격으로 죽을 수 밖에 없었지만 지팡이를 높이 들고 하늘을 바라볼 때 이기게 해 주셨던 모든 것들을, 우리 식으로 말하면 하나님의 좋은 소식, 복음을 선두에 서서 직접 경험한 자가 뻥치지 않고 진실하게 전해주고 있는 것입니다.

근데 놀랍지요!. 다른 때 같으면 웃으면서 넘겼을 이드로가 사위의 증거를 듣고 고백합니다. 11절. ‘이제 내가 알았도다. 여호와는 모든 신보다 크다’ 모세의 신실하고, 감격적인 증거를 받아들이고, 기뻐하고, 찬송합니다. 우리가 볼 때는 하나님의 살아계심과 구원하심과 함께 하심을 알려 주는 것이 최고의 선한 영향력인데, 이 영향력이 지금 모세를 통해 이드로에게 전해지고 있는 것입니다.

자신과 가족을 배려하고 사랑하던 이드로를 향한 고마움과 존중과 진실이 만들어낸 모습이라고 할 수 있습니다. ‘내가 경험한 하나님, 장인 어른도 알면 좋겠습니다’. 여러분들도 이런 마음 가지고 선한 영향력을 만들어 가기를 바라겠습니다.

모세와 이드로는 이렇게 열악하고, 힘든 삶의 환경에서 서로를 격려하고, 힘을 주는 선한 영향력을 뿜어내고 있습니다. 우리에게 주는 도전이라고 할 수 있습니다. 오늘 말씀 제목처럼, 우리도 ‘선한 영향력에 도전’해야 합니다.

3.선한 영향력에 도전하라.
선한 영향력에 도전하지 않으면 나도 모르는 사이에 악한 영향력에 사로 잡힐 수 있습니다. 성경은 선한 영향력을 끼치라고 하지 악한 영향력에 물들라고 하지 않습니다.

너희는 세상의 소금 아니냐, 너희는 세상의 빛이 아니냐, 소금 맛을 내고, 빛을 비쳐 너희들의 착한 행실, 선한 영향력으로 하늘에 계신 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라. (마5:13~16). 얼마나 명쾌합니까?

빌2장에서 바울도 말합니다. ‘여러분은 나무랄 데 없는 순결한 사람이 되서 이 악하고 비뚤어진 세상에서 하나님의 흠없는 자녀로 하늘을 비추는 반짝이는 별이 되십시오'(빌2:15)

악하고 비뚤어진 세상에서 별이 되는 방법, 거창하지 않습니다. 마음 다해 사랑하고, 힘들지만 용서하기 위해 애쓰고, 가능한 환대하고, 도울 수 있으면 돕고, 쉽게 판단하고정죄하지 않고, 힘 빠진 이들 보면 격려하고, 쉽게 화내지 않고, 화해를 위해 애쓰고, 자신이 경험한 구원의 하나님을 마음 다해 전하고.. 이 모든 것이 모일 때 환한 빛을 비추는 별이되서 어둔 세상을 밝혀주는 선한 영향력이 되는 것입니다. 이렇게 하면 좋겠습니다. 그리고 해야 합니다. 어떻게 하면 할 수 있을까요?

4.은혜를 아는 자 되라.
선한 영향력을 발휘하고 어둠을 밝히는 빛나는 별이 되기 위해서 필요한 것은 ‘은혜’입니다. 주의 은혜를 알고, 하나님의 은혜를 경험한 자가 될 때 지치지 않고, 견실하게 빛을 비추는 삶을 살아낼 수 있습니다.

(1) 은혜
은혜가 뭔가요? 가질 자격이 없지만 그럼에도 주시는 하나님의 호의가 은혜입니다. 잘한 것도 없고, 잘난 것도 없는데 생명을 주시고, 삶을 주시고, 구원을 주십니다. 감사하고, 감사한 일입니다. 당연히 여기면 자기만 알고 살겠지만 은혜를 알면 감사를 품고 작은 것이라도 보답하기 위해 애쓰는 삶을 살려고 할 것입니다.

모세가 이드로에게 하나님이 하신 일을 그토록 공들여 설명한 것은 아무리 봐도 자신들은자격없는 자들인데 그런 자신들을 구원하신 하나님의 은혜가 고맙고 놀랍기에 그걸 알려주고 싶었던 것입니다.

은혜는 인과응보에 매여있는 사람들에게는 충격적인 단어입니다. 세상의 정의와 공정은 심은대로 거두는 것입니다. 수고한 만큼 받는 게 공정인데 하나님은 이걸 깨고 잘한 것도 없는데 은혜를 주십니다. 깨시는 이유는 은혜가 필요없는 사람이 없기 때문입니다. 사람은 자신의 힘과 능력과 실력과 업적으로 살아간다고 생각하지만 ‘은혜’없이는 한 순간도 살아갈 수 없다는 것을 보여 주시는 것입니다.

은혜를 거부하면 어떻게 될까요? 은혜를 거부하면 남는 것은 능력과 업적과 성과입니다. 이룬 자는 떳떳하겠지만 그렇지 못한 자는 무너질 수 밖에 없습니다. 결국 남는 것은 전쟁같은 삶입니다. 은혜 없는 세상은 선을 긋고, 치열하게 싸울 수 밖에 없습니다. 선 긋고 판단하고, 정죄하고, 조롱하고, 비난합니다. 사랑도 이해도 인정도 포용도 막힙니다. 은혜를 거부하고 에덴을 떠난 인류가 걸어 온 길입니다. 삶을 은혜로 보지 않고 성과와 업적으로만 판단하는 사회는불행하고, 위험한 사회입니다.

깨야 합니다. 사람이 능력이 있으면 얼마나 있습니까? 자랑할 것이 없는 게 인생인데 그런 인생에게 하나님은 ‘은혜’로 다가 오시고, 십자가라고 하는 놀라운 은혜로 구원해 주신 것입니다.

저는 은혜라는 단어가 참 좋습니다. 은혜는 자질과 성과와 능력으로 지친 사람들에게 푸르름을 주는 ‘상록수’ 같은 단어 입니다. 은혜가 있을 때 사람은 살아나고, 회복됩니다. 은혜에는 자격 없는 자, 죄인을 살리는 힘이 있습니다.

(2) 은혜를 놓치지 말라.
그러므로 여러분들, 은혜를 놓치지 마시기 바랍니다. 은혜 속에 살고 있다는 것, 잊으면 안됩니다. 다 없어도 은혜가 있으면 살 수 있습니다. 하나님의 은혜, 사람의 은혜. 은혜가 있는 곳에는 죽음 대신 생명이 있습니다. 사랑도 할 수 있고, 눈물 많은 서러운 인생도 견딜 수 있게 합니다. 원한과 복수를 끊을 수 있는 유일한 힘이 은혜에 있습니다.

요즘 뭐 때문에 힘드십니까? 그동안 받고 누렸던 은혜를 조용히 묵상해 보십시오. 그리고 그 은혜를 감사로 나눠보세요. 이길 힘을 주실 것입니다.

은혜에 대한 바울의 고백, 한 대목 보고 마치겠습니다. ‘그러나 나는 하나님의 은혜로 오늘의 내가 되었습니다. 나에게 베풀어주신 하나님의 은혜는 헛되지 않았습니다. 나는 사도들 가운데 어느 누구보다도 더 열심히 일하였습니다. 그러나 이렇게 한 것은 내가 아니라, 나와 함께 하신 하나님의 은혜입니다’.(고린도전서 15:10. 새번역)

우리 모두의 고백이 되면 좋겠습니다. 거미줄 같은 선을 쳐 놓고 은혜를 잃어 버린 세상입니다. 이런 세상에 은혜를 알고, 체험한자의 선한 영향력를 마음것 펼쳐 보이는 여러분의 인생이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

Exodus Story 34: Challenge the Forces for Good (Exodus 18:1-12)

1.Reuniting the family
In Exodus 18, our text for today, we see a tikkitaka, a give and take, between Moses and his father-in-law Jethro. Moses had been having a rough time. He’s been out in the wilderness, and he’s had to deal with people complaining that there’s no food to eat and no water to drink. To make matters worse, the Amalekites invade and almost kill him. Each time, Moses is alone with God, and it’s an exhausting battle.

Then one day, a welcome message comes from his father-in-law: v. 6. ‘Your father-in-law, Jethro, is coming with your wife and your two sons’. We don’t know exactly how long they had been apart: a few months at the short end, a year or more at the long end. That’s not a long time compared to the geese dads of our day, but it must have been a joyous and uplifting thing to see all the family reunited after being in such a dangerous place as a war zone.

At this time, we estimate that Moses was in his early 80s, his wife Zipporah was around 60, his first son was in his late 30s, his second son was in his early 30s, and his father-in-law Jethro was around 90. The reunion is sometimes interpreted as a sign that Moses and Zipporah were not on good terms, an interpretation I disagree with.

Who is driving this? Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, a priest of the Midianite tribe. With the foresight and savvy of a man who has lived a long life, he decides it’s time and goes to Moses with his daughter’s family, who are at home. The Bible doesn’t go into much detail, but the comfort and support Moses received from being reunited with his family must have been significant. He must have been criticized, tired, and lonely, and now he has someone who supports him, someone who understands him, and Jethro brings them to him when he needs them most.

2.Influence for good
(1) Jethro’s influence for good
In today’s title, we see the word “influence for good,” and Jethro is a good influence on Moses. But that’s not the only thing Jethro does for Moses. Starting in verse 13, we see one more example of Jethro’s good influence on Moses. Jethro gives him advice that has a decisive impact on the lives of the Israelites and Moses after the Exodus.

After a few days in the refugee-like camp, Jethro sees Moses running around frantically in all directions and says to him, “You can’t do it all by yourself. Let there be a thousand captains, a hundred captains, fifty captains, and ten captains (18:21), and let them divide and rule. It’s about sharing the judgment, sharing the leadership.

Influence is important because it affects the lives and behavior of others. Mencius’ mother moved three times because she wanted him to have a good influence. It would be nice if a person could go alone without being shaken like the horns of a rhinoceros but a person is like a shaky reed, which becomes worse under bad influence and better under good influence, so it is better to give and receive good influence than not.

(2) Moses’ good influence
In the text, the good influence is not limited to Jethro. Moses, who was encouraged by his father-in-law, also exerts a good influence on Jethro. What does he do? He brings the good news, the gospel, to his father-in-law, the priest of the Gentile world, so that he becomes a worshiper of God (v. 12, offering burnt offerings and sacrifices).

In verse 8, Moses goes to great lengths to explain what has happened to him. This is because Jethro, a priest of pagan gods, has not yet believed in God; he only knows that the God of Israel is a tribal god like the gods they worship. To Jethro, Moses tells him the story of God’s amazing deliverance that he has seen and experienced firsthand during the Exodus.

He tells them what God did each time the mighty Pharaoh resisted, and how at the end, the Lion of Death struck Egypt, they were saved by the blood of the Lamb, they left Egypt, a pillar of cloud and fire appeared to guide them as they left, the Red Sea parted, and they were given water to drink and manna to eat when they were suffering because they had no water and nothing to eat, when the Amalekites attacked them and they were about to die, but when they lifted up their staffs and looked to the heavens, they were victorious-all of this, in our terms, is the good news of God, the gospel, told truthfully and without pretense by someone who has been on the front lines and experienced it firsthand.

But it’s amazing! Jethro, who at any other time would have laughed it off, hears his son-in-law’s witness and confesses. Verse 11. “Now I know. The LORD is greater than all gods.’ Acceptance, rejoicing, and praise for Moses’ faithful, moving witness. In our view, the greatest influence for good is to make known God’s living, saving, and present presence, and this is what is now being communicated to Jethro through Moses.

It’s a picture of gratitude, respect, and truth for Jethro, who cared for and loved him and his family, saying, “I want my father-in-law to know the God I’ve experienced. I want you to have this kind of heart and create an impact for good.

Moses and Jethro are exuding a good influence that encourages and strengthens each other in such a poor and difficult life environment. It’s a challenge to us. As the title of today’s message suggests, we too must “challenge our influence for good.

3.Challenge your influence for good
If we don’t challenge good influences, we can unknowingly be captured by evil influences. The Bible tells us to be an influence for good, not to be influenced by evil.

You are the salt of the earth, and you are the light of the world; let your salt be seasoned, let your light shine, that your good deeds, your good influence, may glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16). How clear is that?

In Philippians 2, Paul also says, “Be blameless and pure, so that you may shine as bright stars in the heavens, as blameless children of God in this present evil and crooked world.” (Phil. 2:15)

How to be a star in an evil and crooked world, it’s not complicated: love with all your heart, strive to forgive when it’s hard, be hospitable when you can, help when you can, don’t judge and condemn easily, encourage when you see someone down, don’t get angry easily, strive for reconciliation, share wholeheartedly the God of salvation you’ve experienced, and when all these things come together, be a star that shines brightly, a force for good that lights up a dark world. We can and should do this. How can we do this?

4.Be a grace-knowing person.
What you need to be a force for good and a shining star that lights up the darkness is grace. When you know the Lord’s grace, when you become a person who has experienced God’s grace, you can live a life that shines tirelessly and steadfastly.

(1) Grace
Grace is God’s favor that you don’t deserve, but He gives it anyway. He gives you life, He gives you life, He gives you salvation, even though you’ve done nothing good or deserved it. If you take it for granted, you’ll be selfish, but if you know grace, you’ll be grateful and you’ll try to live a life of giving back, even in small ways.

When Moses went to such lengths to explain to Jethro what God had done, he wanted him to know that God’s grace in saving them, even though they were undeserving, was amazing.

Grace is a shocking word to those who are stuck in a cause-and-effect world. The justice and fairness of the world is that you reap what you sow, you get what you deserve, but God breaks this and gives grace to people who have done nothing right. The reason He breaks it is because there is no one who doesn’t need grace. We think we live by our own strength, power, skill, and achievements, but He is showing us that we cannot live a moment without ‘grace’.

What happens when we reject grace? When grace is rejected, what remains is power, achievement, and performance. Those who achieve will stand tall, but those who don’t will fall. What remains is a warlike life. A world without grace draws lines and fights fiercely; it draws lines, judges, condemns, mocks, and condemns. It blocks love, understanding, acceptance, and inclusion. This is the path we’ve been on since we rejected grace and left Eden. A society that doesn’t see life as grace, that judges only by performance and achievement, is an unhappy, dangerous society.

We need to wake up to the fact that if a person is capable, how capable is he? That’s a life that has nothing to boast about, and to such a life, God comes in ‘grace’ and saves by the amazing grace of the cross.

I love the word ‘Grace’, it’s like an ‘evergreen’ that gives greenery to people who are tired of qualities, achievements, and abilities. When grace is present, people are revitalized, restored. Grace has the power to save the undeserving, the sinner.

(2) Do not miss grace.
Therefore, everyone, don’t miss grace. You must not forget that you are living in grace. Even if you have nothing, if you have grace, you can live. God’s grace, man’s grace. Where there is grace, there is life instead of death. It makes love possible, it makes life bearable, even the sorrowful life of tears. Grace is the only power that can cut off grudges and revenge.

If you’re struggling with something lately, take a moment to quietly reflect on the grace you’ve received and enjoyed, and share it with gratitude. It will give you the strength to overcome.

Let’s close with Paul’s confession of grace: “But by the grace of God I have become what I am today. God’s grace toward me was not in vain, for I worked harder than any of the apostles, but it was not I who did this, but God’s grace that was with me’ (1 Corinthians 15:10. New Living Translation).

May this be the confession of all of us: this is a world that has put up cobwebbed lines and lost grace. May your life be a reflection of the good influence of one who has known and experienced grace.
