고이 간직하고, 곰곰이 되새기고(눅2:8~20)

성탄절 아침입니다. 성탄의 아침이 평안하면 좋겠습니다. ‘크리스마스를 위하여’라는 김시태 시인의 시 한편 읽고 시작하겠습니다. 성탄절 아침, 가슴 한 구석에 간직하고 있는 것들을 그리워하는 따뜻한 시입니다.

너무 많은 걸 잃었습니다.
희미한 고향집과 어머니
그 개구쟁이들
그들을 도로 돌려 주소서.
조그만 카드 속에 돌려 주소서.
첫 아이 보았을 때 기도하던
그 아빠와 엄마도 돌려 주소서
아이들과 손잡고 이야기하며
교회를 찾던 그 시절이
얼마나 행복했던가를
한번 더 종소리를 듣게 하시고
눈 나리는 아침을 걷게 하소서
살면서 가장 소중한 것이
무엇인가를 깨닫게 해 주소서.

그리워하는 것들이 많지요? 고향집, 어머니, 개구쟁이 친구들. 초심의 생각들. 시인과 비슷한 마음, 우리도 다 갖고 있습니다. 여러분들은 뭐가 그리우십니까? 다시 갈 수는 없지만, ‘간직’하고 있는 것만으로도 감사합니다.

오늘 본문 19절에 보니까 우리만 성탄절을 그리워하는 게 아닙니다. 성탄의 주인공 예수님의 어머니 마리아도 그리워하는 모습이 나옵니다. 19절 새번역으로 한번 더 읽습니다. ‘마리아는 이 모든 말을 고이 간직하고 마음 속에 곰곰이 되새겼다’ 오늘 말씀 제목이 여기서 나옵니다. ‘고이 간직하고, 곰곰이 되 새기고’.

마리아는 하늘의 소리를 들은 목자들의 방문을 받고, 목자들로부터 성탄의 소식을 듣게 됩니다. ‘이 아이는 우리가 그토록 기다리던 그리스도, 구세주다. 하나님께 영광을 돌리고, 세상에 평화를 줄 아이로 이 땅에 왔다’. 놀라운 소식이고, 기쁜 소식이지만 발설 하기 쉽지 않은 소식입니다. 그럼에도 마리아는 그 모든 말을 하나도 버리지 않고 ‘고이 간직하고’, ‘곰곰이 되새겼다’는 것입니다.

‘고이’라는 말이 정겹습니다.‘정성을 다한다’는 말입니다. 마리아는 정성을 다해 성탄의 소식을 마음에 담고 있습니다. 그리고, 곰곰이, 깊게 생각합니다. 저는 새번역 성경 번역자가 이 부분을 정감있게 번역한게 마음에 듭니다. 천사의 소식을 보물처럼 귀하게 담는 모습을 부사를 써서 ‘고이’, 정성을 다해 간직한 것으로 묘사하고 있습니다.

기억했다고 해도 뜻이 통하지만 고이 간직한 것으로 표현해 줍니다. 간직과 기억의 차이를 알고 한 번역입니다. 간직과 기억 중에서 어떤 단어가 한 수 위입니까? 간직이 한 수 위입니다. 간직에는 애틋함이 있고, 사랑이 있습니다. ‘난 당신을 마음 깊은 곳에 늘 간직하고 있어’ 하는 것과 ‘난 당신을 기억하고 있어’ 하는 것과 어떤게 더 폼납니까? 간직이 폼납니다. 간직은 내 영혼의 정원에 ‘고이’ 숨겨논 보석입니다.

기억은 다분히 기계적이고, 수동적입니다. 해도 되고 안해도 그만인게 기억이지만 간직은 안 할 수 없는 나의 마음입니다. 간직이 훨씬 깊습니다. 마리아는 성탄의 소식을 ‘기억’하는 정도가 아니라 마음 깊은 곳에 담아 평생을 되새기고, 간직하면서 살아가게 됩니다.

이 모습이 성탄의 소식을 듣는 모든 이들에게 주는 마리아의 도전입니다. 우리도 성탄의 소식을 듣지만 이 소식을 어떤 식으로 듣습니까? 간직합니까? 기억합니까? 간직하고 있으면 성탄이 주는 메시지를 깊게 받은 것이고 기억 정도만 하면 성탄은 공휴일 정도 밖에 되지 않을 것입니다.

마리아의 모습을 보면서 두 가지 묵상하겠습니다. 첫 번째 묵상은 고이 간직하기 입니다. 두 번째 묵상은 곰곰이 되새기기 입니다. 고이 간직해야 할 것은 성탄의 진실이고, 곰곰이 새겨야 할 것은 성탄의 축복입니다. 성탄의 진실과 성탄의 축복을 알 때 성탄의 소식은 기쁜 소식이 되고, 온전한 신앙의 사람으로 서게 만듭니다.

1. 고이 간직하기: 성탄의 진실
첫 번째 묵상입니다. 우리도 성탄의 진실, 고이 간직하십시다. 아시겠지만 마리아는 동정녀의 몸으로 아이를 임신하는 순간부터 위험에 빠집니다. 돌에 맞아 죽을 수도 있는 상황입니다. 그렇게 힘들게 임신하고, 출생한 마리아에게 목자들이 찾아와 하늘의 소리를 들려줍니다. ‘이 아이는 약속한 구세주다. 메시아다’. 빈 말이라도 기뻐했을텐데 빈말이 아니라 사실이었고, 여기에 아기 예수 탄생의 진실이 숨어 있습니다.

마리아가 임신 초기부터 확인한 사항이지만 막상 아이가 태어나고 천사들이 달려와서 하늘의 소리를 들려줄 때 두려웠을 것입니다. 하지만 자신의 품에 있는 아이가 그리스도 주라고 하는 사실을 받아들이고, 그 사실을 고이, 정성것 품기 시작합니다. 아이를 안고 다짐했을 것입니다. 이 아이가 자라 사명을 다하도록 하겠다. 어떤 날은 뜨거운 눈물을 흘리면서 기도했을 것입니다. 

마리아가 고이 간직한 것은 동방박사의 좋은 선물도 아니고, 목자가 먼 길 찾아와서 축하해서 고마운 것도 아닙니다. 마리아가 마음 깊이 간직한 것은 아기 예수의 구세주되심에 있습니다. 성탄의 진실은 우리에게 오신 예수가 아픔 많고 슬픔 많고 죄 많은 이 땅을 구원하기 위해 오신 하나님의 독생자, 우리의 구원자로 오셨다고 하는 사실입니다.

구세주로 오신 것은 모든 인간은 누구나 다 예외 없이 하나님의 사랑 없이는 살 수가 없다는 것, 구원자가 필요하다는 것을 알려 주신 것입니다. 이 성탄의 진실에서 드러난 하나님의 사랑을 마주하지 못 할때 모든 존재는 천상천하유아독존, 홀로 남겨진 존재 밖에 되지 못합니다. 불안하고, 고통스럽습니다. 전쟁을 수단으로만 살아갑니다.

성탄의 진실이 우리의 삶을 건드리지 않는다면 우리의 모든 노력과 수고는 헛된 것이 될 수 밖에 없습니다. 우리의 외롭고 고단한 내면을 치료하는 유일한 방법은 성탄의 주님이 나를 사랑한다는 것, 임마누엘의 하나님으로 함께하고 있다는 사실을 아는 것입니다. 주님의 탄생은 우리를 삶의 모든 시련과 상황에 맞설 힘을 주는 힘이고, 은혜입니다. 이 성탄의 진실이 기쁜 것이고, 힘이 되는 것입니다. 마리아는 이 진실을 평생 간직하고 살아갑니다

마리아는 메시아인 아이가 자라는 것을 보면서 뿌듯했을 것입니다. 예수님이 공생애를 시작했을 때는 먼 발치에서 누구보다 깊게 응원하지 않았을까요? 십자가에 달린 그 고통스러운 순간에도 마리아는 떠나지 않고 함께 있습니다. 담대합니다. 마리아의 마음에 고이 간직하고 있던 비밀 때문에 담대했을 것입니다. 마리아는 부활한 주님을 만납니다. 그리고 자신이 ‘고이’ 간직했던 비밀이 거짓이 아니라 진실이라는 것을 확인합니다. 주님이 승천하신 뒤에는 초대 교회 성도들을 돌보면서 주님이 말씀하신 사랑과 섬김과 평화와 희망의 삶을 살면서 어려운 일들을 돌봅니다.

성탄이 왜 하늘에는 영광이고, 땅에서는 기쁨이고, 평화입니까?(14절) 마리아가 고이 간직한 ‘성탄의 진실’ 때문입니다. 성탄은 구원과 희망과 겸손과 평화와 사랑이 출발한 날입니다. 성탄의 진실이고, 이 진실을 간직하고 사는 것이 그리스도인의 삶입니다. 성탄의 진실이 애틋한 마음으로, 정성껏 간직될 때 구원과 평화와 희망과 사랑을 위해 애쓰게 됩니다. 성탄의 진실을 간직한 사람의 삶은 따뜻하고 풍성합니다. 단단합니다.

잘 아는 얘기지만 다시 나누고 싶습니다. 오 헨리의 ‘크리스마스의 선물’이라는 단편입니다.
짐과 델라 부부 이야기입니다. 성탄절이 다가 왔습니다. 선물을 주고 싶은데 가난합니다. 부인 델라는 애지중지하던 자신의 멋진 긴 머리를 잘라 팝니다. 그 돈으로 남편 짐의 시계에 어울리는 멋진 시계줄을 삽니다. 남편도 선물을 준비합니다. 돈이 없어서 자신의 시계를 팝니다. 그리고 아내의 아름답고 긴 머리카락을 묶는 머리핀을 구입합니다.

성탄 이브, 선물을 주고 받습니다. 하지만 남편의 시계는 없고, 부인의 머리카락은 이미 잘려 나갔습니다. 정성것 준비한 선물이 소용없게 됐습니다. 가장 소중한 것을 버렸지만 귀하고 아름답습니다. 희생과 겸손과 평화가 넘칩니다. 성탄의 진실이 살아 있는 것 아닙니까? 성탄의 진실을 품고 성탄의 예수 그리스도가 내 안에 간직되어 있을 때 마음을 다한 사랑, 평화, 배려, 감사가 흘러 넘치게 됩니다. 오늘 이런 성탄의 진실이 여러분들의 가슴 깊이 감동적으로 다시한번 새겨지기를 바라겠습니다.

2.곰곰이 되새기기: 성탄의 축복
두 번째 묵상입니다. 성탄의 축복 곰곰이 되새깁시다. 성탄의 진실이 준 성탄의 축복 또한 곰곰이 되새길 때 축복 속에 살아가게 됩니다. 축복도 되새기지 않으면 잃어 버립니다. 곰곰이, 깊게 거듭 되새길 때 축복이 사라지지 않고 살아납니다.

성탄의 축복은 성탄의 진실을 고이 간직한 자들이 살아내는 복된 삶입니다. 우리에게 오신 주님을 마음에 품고, 믿음을 새롭게 하고, 미움 대신 사랑을 나누고, 불안대신 희망을 품고, 전쟁 같은 세상에 평화의 씨를 뿌리고, 용서의 마음을 가지고 사는 것. 이것보다 귀한 축복이 어디 있습니까?

성탄의 진실과 성탄의 축복을 간직하고, 뿌듯해 하는 성탄의 아침이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

Keep it, Reflect on it, and Remember it (Luke 2:8-20)

It’s Christmas morning. I hope your Christmas morning is peaceful. I’d like to begin by reading a poem by poet Si-Tae Kim called “For Christmas.” It’s a heartwarming poem about longing for the things you hold dear on Christmas morning.

I’ve lost so much.
A faded home and a mother
Those bastards.
Give them back to me.
Give them back to me in a little card.
That prayed when they saw their first child
The father and mother who prayed when they saw their first child
The days of holding hands with their children
How happy they were to visit the church
How happy they were
Let us hear the bells ring once more
and walk through the snowy mornings
and realize what is most precious in life
is the most precious thing in life.
(Kim Si-Tae, For Christmas)

There are many things you miss, aren’t there? Your home, your mother, your silly friends. Beginning thoughts. A heart like the poet’s, we all have them. What do you miss? Things you can’t go back to, but are grateful to ‘have’.

We’re not the only ones who miss Christmas, as we see in verse 19 of today’s text, Mary, the mother of Jesus, the main character of Christmas, also misses it. Read verse 19 one more time in the New Living Translation: ‘Mary kept all these words and pondered them in her heart’ This is where the title of today’s lesson comes from: ‘kept, pondered, pondered.

Mary is visited by shepherds who hear a voice from heaven, and from the shepherds she hears the news of Christmas: ‘This child is the Christ, the Savior, the one we have been waiting for. He has come to earth to bring glory to God and peace to the world. It’s amazing news, joyous news, and not easy news to share. And yet, Mary didn’t throw away any of it, she ‘kept’ it, she ‘pondered’ it.

I love the word “treasure” – it means to give it your all. Mary takes the news of Christmas to heart, and she ponders, ponders, ponders. I love how the New International Version translator renders this. Treasuring the angel’s message like a treasure. The adverb “treasured” is used to describe it as treasured, as something you hold dear.

It’s the same as remembering, but the adverb makes it sound like she kept it. This translation recognizes the difference between keeping and remembering. Which word is better than cherish and remember? Cherish is better than remember. There’s an attachment, there’s a love. Which is more elegant, “I keep you close to my heart” or “I remember you”? Elegant. Keeping is a jewel that I have ‘stashed’ in the garden of my soul.

Remembering is mechanical and passive. Remembering is something you can do or not do, but keeping is something you can’t do. Retention is much deeper. Mary doesn’t just “remember” the news of Christmas, she carries it in her heart and lives with it for the rest of her life.

This is Mary’s challenge to all who hear the news of Christmas. We too hear the news of Christmas, but how do we hear it: do we keep it or do we remember it? If we keep it, we have received its message deeply, and if we only remember it, Christmas will be nothing more than a holiday.

As we look at the image of Mary, we’re going to do two reflections. The first reflection is on retention. The second reflection is to reflect. The first reflection is the truth of Christmas, and the second is the blessing of Christmas. When we know the truth of Christmas and the blessings of Christmas, the news of Christmas becomes good news and makes us stand as people of faith.

1. Cherish: The Truth of Christmas
First reflection. We’re going to look at the truth of Christmas. As we know, Mary is in danger from the moment she conceives a child in her virgin body. She could be stoned to death. After a difficult pregnancy and birth, shepherds come to her and she hears a heavenly voice: ‘This child is the promised Savior. The Messiah. Even if they were empty words, she would have rejoiced, but they weren’t empty words, they were true,
And herein lies the truth of the birth of baby Jesus.

It’s something that Mary knew from the beginning of her pregnancy, but when the child was born and the angels came running and she heard the heavenly voices, she must have been terrified. But she accepted the fact that the child in her arms was the Christ child, and she began to embrace that fact, to hold him tightly and lovingly. You hold him in your arms and say to yourself, “This child will grow up to fulfill his mission. Some days she prayed with hot tears in her eyes.

What Mary treasured was not the good gifts of the wise men, nor was she grateful that the shepherds had traveled a long way to celebrate with her. What she treasured deep in her heart was the saviorhood of her baby Jesus. The truth of Christmas is that Jesus, who came to us, came as our Savior, the only begotten Son of God, who came to save this hurting, sorrowful, sinful world.

He came as a savior to show us that all human beings, without exception, cannot live without God’s love, that we need a savior. Without encountering the love of God revealed in this Christmas truth, all of existence is nothing but an abandoned and alone existence. We are insecure, we suffer, and we live by means of war.

If the truth of Christmas does not touch our lives, all our efforts and labors will be in vain. The only way to cure our lonely and troubled inner world is to know that the Lord of Christmas loves us, that He is with us as the God of Immanuel. The birth of the Lord is the strength, the grace that gives us the power to face all the trials and circumstances of life. This truth of Christmas is joyful and empowering. Mary carries this truth with her for the rest of her life

Mary must have been proud to watch her Messiah child grow up. She must have cheered from the sidelines as Jesus began his public life. Even in those agonizing moments on the cross, Mary doesn’t leave, she’s there. She is bold. Bold, perhaps, because of the secret she held dear to her heart. She meets the risen Lord and confirms that the secret she had “kept” was not a lie, but the truth. After the Lord’s ascension, she cares for the members of the early church, living the life of love, service, peace, and hope that he spoke of.

Why is Christmas glory in heaven, joy on earth, and peace? (v. 14) It’s because of the “truth of Christmas” that Mary treasured. Christmas is the day that salvation, hope, humility, peace, and love began. This is the truth of Christmas, and living it is the Christian life. When the truth of Christmas is held dearly and with care, it strives for salvation, peace, hope, and love. The life of a person who holds the truth of Christmas is warm and rich. It is solid.

I know this story well, but I want to share it again. It’s a short story called “A Christmas Gift” by O. Henry. It’s about a couple, Jim and Della. It’s Christmas, and they want to give gifts, but they’re poor. The wife, Della, sells her prized long hair and uses the money to buy a nice watchband to match her husband, Jim’s watch. Her husband also wants to give a gift. He doesn’t have any money, so he sells his own watch and buys a hairpin to tie up his wife’s beautiful, long hair.

On Christmas Eve, the gifts are exchanged, but the husband’s watch is gone, and the wife’s hair has already been cut off. Your carefully crafted gift is useless. The most precious thing is gone, but it’s precious and beautiful, full of sacrifice, humility, and peace. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? When I embrace the truth of Christmas and keep the Jesus Christ of Christmas within me, wholehearted love, peace, caring, and gratitude overflows. May these truths of Christmas touch your hearts and minds again today.

2.Reflection: The Blessings of Christmas
The second reflection. Let’s reflect on the blessings of Christmas. The blessings of Christmas, given by the truth of Christmas, live on when we reflect on them. If we don’t reflect on the blessings, we lose them. When we reflect, deeply and repeatedly, the blessings are not lost, but come alive.

The blessing of Christmas is the blessed life lived by those who hold on to the truth of Christmas. To hold the One who came to us in our hearts, to renew our faith, to share love instead of hate, to embrace hope instead of anxiety, to sow seeds of peace in a warring world, and to live with a forgiving heart.

May you have a Merry Christmas, and may you rejoice in the truth of Christmas and the blessings of Christmas.
