뜻대로 되지 않아 힘든 분들을 위해(창40:14~15, 23)

2023년 마지막 주일입니다. 1년이 빠르셨습니까? 지루하셨습니까? 시간에 날개가 달린 것처럼 훨훨 날아서 온 것 같습니다. 빠르게 날아 왔는데도 무사히 송년 예배를 드리고 있습니다. 고맙고 감사합니다.

[아직도 가야 할 길]이라는 스캇 펙의 책이 있습니다. 이 책 첫 문장이 기억 납니다. ‘Life is difficult’. 인생은 어렵다. 누가 ‘인생을 쉽다’ 말할 수 있겠습니까? 한 해 한 해 지나갈 때마다 격하게 공감하게 됩니다.

오늘 말씀 제목이 ‘뜻대로 되지 않아 힘든 분들을 위해’라고 되있는데 글쎄요, 여기에 들어가지 않는 분은 없겠지요! 뜻대로 된 일 보다 뜻대로 되지 않은 일이 더 많습니다. 예, 오늘 말씀은 뜻대도 되지 않아 힘든 우리 모두를 위한 말씀으로 나누고 싶습니다.

오늘 본문의 주인공은 요셉입니다. 뜻대로 되지 않아 힘들어 했던 사람이 누구지? 할 때 가장 먼저 떠오른 인물입니다. 요셉은 뜻하지 않은 힘든 일을 가장 예민한 청년 시절에 많이 겪습니다. 요셉은 야곱의 11번째 아들입니다. 어머니가 라헬입니다. 야곱이 정말 좋아했던 어머니입니다. 요셉은 그런 어머니에게서 어렵게 낳은 아들입니다. 그래서 그랬는지 아버지가 요셉을 정말 좋아했습니다. 다른 형제들이 분노를 일으킬 정도로 아버지 사랑을 독차지 합니다.

요셉이 한참 때 부른 노래(애창곡)가 뭔지 아세요? ‘내가 제일 잘 나가’. 요셉은 꿈을 꿔도 제일 잘 나가는 꿈만 꿉니다. 계속 잘 나가면 좋았겠지만 금방 끝납니다. 나락으로 떨어집니다. 형제들의 공분으로 구덩이에 들어가게 되고, 거기서 죽다 살아나게 됩니다. 살아나지만 집으로 돌아가지 못합니다. 노예로 팔려가 남의 나라, 남의 집에서 노예로 살게 됩니다. 그렇게 자리를 잘아 가는데 주인 여자가 잘 생긴 총각 요셉에 눈독을 들입니다. 요셉이 단호하게 뿌리칩니다. 거절 당한 마님이 분풀이로 요셉을 감옥에 보냅니다. 인생 참 안 풀리지요?

또 감옥에 들어가서도 나올 기회가 없지 않았습니다. 오늘 읽은 본문이 그 얘기입니다. 감옥에 들어와 있는 왕의 최측근의 꿈을 해석해 줍니다. 요셉은 꿈에 대한 확신이 있었기에 꿈 해석을 해주고 석방되기를 기대합니다. 14절 15절 보세요. ‘자기는 히브리 땅에서 끌려온 노예지만 감옥에 들어 올 일은 하지 않았다. 이제 내가 해몽해준대로 사흘 안에 당신은 풀려난다. 나가면 나를 꺼내달라’ 잔뜩 기대하고 있습니다.

어떻게 됩니까? 23절. 풀려나니까 다 까먹고 잊어버립니다. 사람은 화장실 갈 때와 올 때가 확실히 다릅니다. 요셉의 반응 나오지 않지만 기대가 컸기에 실망도 컸을 것입니다. 요셉이 어떤 생각을 했을까요? ‘인생 참 더럽게 안 풀린다’ 이랬을까요? 단언하건데 섭섭하기는 했겠지만 그러지 않았을 것입니다. 어떻게 아냐구요? 요셉이 보여줘서 압니다.

오늘 요셉을 보는 이유입니다. 요셉은 계속되는 실망과 틀어짐 속에서 무너지지 않습니다. 여기서 무너진다는 것은 뜻대로 되지 않을 때 나타나는 모습입니다. 뜻대로 되지 않으면 어떤 모습이 많이 나옵니까? 분노, 위축, 의욕상실, 은둔, 집착, 우울, 자기 비하, 타락 등등 이런 모습이 많은데 이런 모습이 요셉에게서 보이지 않는 다는 것입니다. 신기할 정도입니다.

구덩이에서 겨우 살아남아 노예로 팔려갔습니다. 신세한탄하면서 의욕을 잃을만한데 그런 모습이 안 보입니다. 실크 옷 입고, 좋은 음식 먹던 부자집 도령이 노예 일을 너무 잘 하고, 열심히 합니다. 너무 잘해서 주인 보디발이 요셉에게 살림살이 전부를 맡깁니다. 보디발의 눈에는 요셉이 일만 잘하는 노예가 아니었던 것입니다.

창39:3. 그의 주인이 여호와께서 그와 함께 하심을 보며 또 여호와께서 그의 범사에 형통하게 하심을 보았더라.

하나님이 요셉의 배후에 있다는 것을 느낄 정도로 요셉에게 영적 아우라가 있었던 것입니다. ‘내가 제일 잘나가’하면서 자만으로 가득찼던 사람이 제일 밑바닥 인생을 살고 있는데도 원망도 불만도, 불안이 없습니다. 보디발의 아내가 유혹을 해도 선을 지킵니다. 사람이 뜻 대로 되지 않으면 절제를 잃어 버리고 막 나갈 수 있는데도 요셉은 감옥을 가는 한이 있어도 자신을 지켜냅니다. 감옥에 가서도 변하지 않습니다. 억울할만한데도 여전히 성실하고, 여전히 최선을 다합니다. 간수장도 그런 요셉에게 감옥 일을 다 맡깁니다.

요셉이 꿈 해석을 하는데 꿈 해석은 고도의 영적 감각입니다. 부정의 에너지가 넘치면 나올 수 없는 감각인데 요셉은 열악한 감옥 생활을 하면서도 꿈 해석을 기가막히게 합니다. 영적 감각이 충만하게 살아있다는 것입니다. 요셉이 나중에 바로 왕의 꿈 해석을 감옥에서 하게 되는데 술 맡은 관원장의 꿈 해석을 한지 2년 지난 후에 하게 됩니다. 뜻한 대로 되지 않아 여전히 감옥에 있는 상태이지만 2년이 지난 후에도 꿈을 해석하는 고도의 영적인 감각을 그대로 가지고 있었던 것입니다. 뜻대로 되지 않았지만 무너지지 않았습니다.

창 50:20에 보면 아버지 야곱이 죽은 후에 복수를 두려워하는 형들에게 하는 말이 나옵니다. ‘형님들은 나를 해치려고 하였지만 하나님은 오히려 그것을 선하게 바꾸셔서, 오늘과 같이 수많은 사람의 생명을 구원하게 하셨습니다’ 형들에게 배신당하고, 죽을뻔하고, 노예살이하고, 누명쓰고, 감옥에 가고, 자기 뜻대로 되지 않는 수 없이 많은 일을 겪지만 부정적인 악한 감정에 끌려들어가지 않습니다. 요셉이라고 힘들지 않았겠습니까? 그런데도 무너지지 않고 선함으로 이겨냅니다.

놓치지 않아야 되는 상징적인 사건들입니다. 요셉은 하나님의 섭리와 계획에 잘 따라와 주었습니다. 요셉이 무너지지 않았기에 이스라엘 백성이 살아남았고, 애굽에서 번성하여 가나안 땅으로 다시 들어갈 수 있게 된 것입니다. 뜻대로 되지 않아 무너졌다면, 아찔 했을 것입니다. 내가 무너지지 않아야 다른 이들이 살아납니다.

어떻게 이렇게 할 수 있었을까요? 계속되는 불운 속에서 요셉을 무너지지 않게 만든 토대가 있습니다. 뭔지 아시겠습니까? 구덩이 사건(경험)입니다. 구덩이는 기고만장한 동생에게 내린 형들의 복수입니다. 너무 꼴보기 싫어 구덩이에 묻어 버립니다. 죽이겠다는 것입니다. 큰 형의 아량으로 목숨은 건지지만 집으로 돌아가지 못하고 노예로 팔려나갑니다.

구덩이에 묻힐 때 얼마나 두렵고 무서웠을까요? 구덩이는 ‘Bor’ 단어를 씁니다. 무덤, 죽음, 스올을 뜻하는 단어입니다. 하마스에게 인질로 잡혀간 사람들이 가졌을만한 공포로 가득찼을 것입니다. 구덩이에 며칠 있었는지는 모르지만 요셉은 자신의 무덤, 자신의 스올에서 두려움에 떨지만 않고 무엇인가를 생각하기 시작했던 것 같습니다.

스쳐지나가는 요셉의 생각을 다 말씀드릴 수는 없습니다. 하지만 요셉은 스올의 구덩이 한 가운데서, 희망의 불빛은 하나도 없는 가운데서 변하기 시작합니다. 죽음 앞에서 자신의 부끄러운 과거가 보이고, 부모의 사랑이 보이고, 무엇 보다도 아브라함의 하나님, 이삭의 하나님, 야곱의 하나님이 그의 가슴 속에 들어오기 시작합니다. 약함을 인식합니다. 부족함을 알게 됩니다. 죽음 앞에서 ‘하나님 앞에 선 인간, 신 앞에 선 존재’가 된 것입니다. 죽음 한 복판에서, 뜻대로 되지 않은 인생 한 복판에서 요셉이 살아납니다.

살 수 없는 자, 죄 많은 자, 교만한 자, 자기만 아는 자가 은혜로 살아납니다. 신약의 용어로 말하면 요셉의 구덩이는 요셉의 거듭남이고, 요셉의 회심입니다. 자기 잘난 맛에 살던 자존심 강한 자가 죽고 하나님 앞에 선 자, 하나님은 인정하는 자, 하나님을 의지하는 자로 다시 태어나게 된 것입니다. 요셉이 계속되는 불운 속에서도 의연하고, 늠름하게 대처할 수 있었던 근본 배경이고, 힘입니다. 하나님이 이런 요셉을 쓰신 것입니다. 죽음의 순간을 넘기고 살아났는데도 무너질 때마다 재수 없는 인생 그러면서 무너졌다면 노예 출신 전과자가 어떻게 이집트 제국의 총리가 될 수 있었겠습니까? 

뜻대로 되지 않을 때가 뜻대로 될 때마다 훨씬 중요하고, 더 잘해야 합니다. 요셉에 의하면 뜻대로 되지 않아 힘들때는 다시 시작하는 때고, 제대로 살게 만드는 최고의 기회입니다. 잘 보이면 좋겠습니다.

헤밍웨이의 [노인과 바다]에서 늙은 어부 산티아고가 며칠간 고기 한마리 잡지 못했는지 아십니까? 84일간 한마리도 잡지 못합니다. 그러다가 85일째 되는 날 엄청난 고기를 잡습니다. 배 뒤에 매달고 신나게 돌아오는데 상어떼의 공격을 받습니다. 고생고생하며 잡은 고기가 앙상한 뼈만 남습니다. 기다림, 기대, 노력, 성과. 전부 사라졌습니다. 헤밍웨이가 여기서 묻는 것입니다. 이게 실패인가? 앙상한 뼈만 남으면 실패인가? 헤밍웨이는 아니라는 것입니다. 성공보다 귀한 게 뜻대로 되지 않음 안에 있다는 것입니다.

꽃도 떨리는 날이 있어야 핍니다. 차가운 겨울 한 복판, 깊은 밤에도 새순이 돋아납니다. 뜻대로 되지 않는 힘든 일 속에서 무엇인가 솟아나고 있습니다. 부정의 에너지로 죽이지 않아야 합니다. 후회막심하게 됩니다.

뜻대로 되지 않을 때는 깊어지는 때입니다. 삶을 알아가는 때입니다. 우리는 질그릇입니다. 잘 깨지고 약합니다. Life is difficult. 인생은 어렵습니다. 그러니 뜻대로 되지 않을 때 잠깐만 당황하고, 당황을 빨리 끝냅시다.

인생은 어렵지만 인생은 역설이기도 합니다. 하나님을 신뢰하는 자에게는 하나님이 주시는 역설과 반전이 있습니다. 성경은 반전의 역사로 가득합니다. 도망자 모세가 출애굽의 인도자가 됩니다. 소년 다윗이 거인 골리앗을 이깁니다. 비겁하던 베드로가 담대한 순교자가 됩니다. 박해자 사울이 최고의 전파자 바울이 됩니다. 십자가의 패배가 부활의 승리가 됩니다. 뜻대로 되지 않아 힘들어 하는 우리 모두에게 주시는 하나님의 메시지, 아닙니까? 듣고 어둠의 구덩이, 어둠의 마음에서 나갑시다.

괴테의 노래입니다. ‘꿈꾸고 사랑했네. 해처럼 맑게’. 해처럼 밝고 환한 마음으로 새 꿈 꾸며 맞이하는 새해가 되기를 바라겠습니다.

For those who are struggling with things not going their way (Genesis 40:14-15, 23)

It’s the last Sunday of 2023. Did the year go fast or was it boring? It seems like time flew by as if it had wings. Even though it flew fast, we are safely here for the year-end service. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

[There’s a book by Scott Peck called The Way We Still Have to Go. I remember the first sentence of this book: ‘Life is difficult’. Life is difficult. Who could ever say ‘life is easy’, and it resonates with me intensely as each year passes.

Today’s sermon is titled ‘For those who have a hard time with things not going their way’ and well, who doesn’t fit in here! There are more things that go wrong than things that go right.Yes, today’s sermon is for all of us who have a hard time with things not going their way.

The main character of today’s text is Joseph, who is the first person who comes to mind when you think of someone who has had to deal with unexpected hardships. Joseph experienced a lot of unexpected hardships as a young man, when he was most vulnerable. Joseph was the 11th son of Jacob. His mother is Rachel. Jacob’s favorite mother. Joseph is the hard son of that mother, and that’s why his father loved him so much. He monopolizes his father’s love to the point where his other brothers resent him.

Do you know what Joseph sang (a favorite song) at one point? “I’m the best of all”. When Joseph dreams, he only dreams about being the best of the best. It’s nice to be the best, but it’s short-lived. He falls into a pit. His brothers throw him into a pit, where he dies and is resurrected. You survive, but you never return home. You’re sold into slavery, and you’re enslaved in another country, in another house. And you’re getting along just fine, until the woman who owns you sets her sights on Joseph, a handsome bachelor. Joseph firmly rebuffs her. Rejected, she sends him to prison. Life doesn’t work out, does it?

And yet, once in prison, there was no chance of getting out. That’s the story in today’s reading. Joseph interprets the dreams of the king’s closest advisor in prison. Joseph is so confident in the dream that he gives the interpretation and expects to be released. Look at verses 14 and 15: “You are a slave brought from the land of the Hebrews, but you have done nothing to deserve to be in prison. Now, in three days you will be released, just as I have interpreted the dream for you. When you get out, bring me out.’ He’s looking forward to it.

What happens? Verse 23. When you are released, you forget all about it. People are definitely different when they go to the bathroom than when they come back. Joseph’s reaction doesn’t come out, but the anticipation was great, so the disappointment must have been great. What do you think Joseph was thinking, “My life just doesn’t work out?” I’m sure he was disappointed, but he wasn’t. How do you know? We know because Joseph showed us.

That’s why we’re looking at Joseph today. Joseph doesn’t crumble in the face of constant disappointment and failure. And by crumble, I mean what happens when things don’t go your way. You know what happens when things don’t go your way? Anger, withdrawal, demotivation, withdrawal, obsession, depression, self-deprecation, degradation…there’s a lot of that, and I don’t see it in Joseph. It’s unbelievable.

He barely survived the pit and was sold into slavery. You’d think he’d be demoralized, but we don’t see that in him. He’s a rich man, dressed in silk, eating good food, and he’s so good at his slave job, so good at it, that his master, Potiphar, puts him in charge of the household. In Potiphar’s eyes, Joseph was not just a good slave.

Gen. 39:3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD had been good to him in all that he did.

There was such a spiritual aura about Joseph that he could sense that God was behind him. A man who was full of pride, thinking “I’m the best,” is living the lowest life, yet he has no resentment, no complaints, no anxiety. Even when Potiphar’s wife tempts him, he stays in line. When a man can lose his self-control and just walk out if he doesn’t get his way, Joseph stays true to himself, even if it means going to prison. Going to prison doesn’t change him: he’s still faithful, still trying his best, even though he deserves it. So much so that the jailer puts him in charge of all the work in the prison.

Joseph does dream interpretation, which is a highly spiritual sense. It’s a sense that you can’t have if you’re full of negative energy, and yet Joseph is able to interpret dreams brilliantly, even though he’s in a very poor prison, because he’s got a highly spiritual sense that’s alive and well. Joseph later does the king’s dream interpretation in prison, and it’s two years after he did the jailer’s dream interpretation. It didn’t go well, and he’s still in prison, but two years later, he still has that highly spiritual sense of interpreting dreams. It didn’t go well, but he didn’t fall apart.

In Genesis 50:20, after the death of his father, Jacob says to his brothers, who fear revenge: ‘My brothers meant to harm me, but God turned it for good, so that I might save many lives, just as I am today’ Betrayed by his brothers, nearly killed, slaughtered, falsely accused, imprisoned, countless other things that don’t go his way, but he doesn’t allow himself to be dragged down by negative evil emotions. It must have been hard for Joseph, but he doesn’t break down, he overcomes with goodness.

These are symbolic events that should not be missed. Joseph was in tune with God’s providence and plan. Because Joseph didn’t fall apart, the Israelites survived and were able to thrive in Egypt and re-enter the land of Canaan. If I had fallen apart because things didn’t go my way, I would have been devastated. When I don’t fall apart, others survive.

How was he able to do this? There is a foundation that kept Joseph from falling apart in the face of continued bad luck. You know what it is: the pit incident (experience). The pit is the older brother’s revenge on the younger brother for being so unsightly that he buries him in a pit. He’s saved by the older brother, but he’s not allowed to return home and is sold into slavery.

Imagine how scared and frightened you must have been when you were buried in the pit. The word for pit is ‘Bor’. It’s a word that means grave, death, and shol. It must have been filled with the kind of fear that people held hostage by Hamas must have had. We don’t know how many days he was in the pit, but it seems that Joseph began to think of something other than fear in his own tomb, his own shol.

We can’t tell you all of Joseph’s thoughts as they pass through his mind, but in the midst of the pit of Sheol, in the midst of the absence of any ray of hope, Joseph begins to change. In the face of death, he sees his shameful past, he sees the love of his parents, and most of all, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob begins to enter his heart. He recognizes his weakness. He recognizes his inadequacies. In the midst of death, in the midst of a life that didn’t go his way, in the midst of a life that didn’t go his way, Joseph comes to life – a man before God, a being before God.

The unlivable, the sinful, the proud, and the self-absorbed are made alive by grace. In New Testament terms, Joseph’s pit is Joseph’s regeneration, Joseph’s conversion. The proud man who lived in his own good taste died and was reborn as a man who stood before God, a man who acknowledged God, a man who relied on God. This is the foundation, the strength, that allowed Joseph to be resolute and strong in the face of his continued misfortune. This is the kind of Joseph that God used, because how could a former slave and ex-convict become prime minister of the Egyptian empire if he hadn’t survived a near-death experience and then fallen apart at every turn?

When things don’t go your way, they are much more important than when they do, and you have to do better. According to Joseph, when things don’t go your way, it’s a time to start over, and it’s the best opportunity to get it right. Let’s hope it works out well for you.

In Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, do you know how many days Santiago, the old fisherman, doesn’t catch a single fish? Eighty-four days he doesn’t catch a single fish, and then on the 85th day he catches a huge fish. He hangs it on the back of his boat and comes back excitedly, only to be attacked by a school of sharks. All you’re left with are the bones of the fish you worked so hard to catch. The wait, the anticipation, the effort, the achievement. All gone. Hemingway is asking here: Is this failure? If you’re left with nothing but a bunch of bones, is that failure? No, Hemingway says, it’s the failure that’s more valuable than the success.

Even flowers need a shivering day to bloom. Even in the dead of winter, in the depths of the night, something springs forth in the midst of the hardships of not working out. Don’t kill it with the energy of negativity, or you’ll regret it.

When things don’t go your way, that’s when you go deep. That’s when you get to know life. We are earthen vessels. We are fragile and weak. Life is difficult, so when things don’t go our way, let’s panic for a second, and let’s end the panic quickly.

Life is hard, but life is also a paradox. There are paradoxes and reversals that God gives to those who trust in Him. The Bible is full of reversals. Moses, a fugitive, becomes the leader of the Exodus. David, the boy, defeats Goliath, the giant. The cowardly Peter becomes a bold martyr. Saul the persecutor becomes Paul the greatest evangelist. The defeat of the cross becomes the victory of the resurrection. Isn’t that God’s message to all of us who are struggling with things not going our way? Listen, and let’s get out of the pit of darkness, out of the darkness of our hearts.
