로마서 12: 뒤틀린 사람들 (롬 1:22~27)

1. 뒤틀린 사람들: 외면의 결과

로마서 12번째 시간입니다. 오늘은 하나님을 외면한 결과로 나타나는 모습을 보겠습니다. 그 결과가 뭐라 그랬습니까? ‘뒤틀림’입니다. 뒤틀림은 문이 틀어져 닫히지 않는 것처럼, 원래 반듯했던 모습이 변질된 겁니다. 처음엔 잘 맞았던 문이 삐걱대고, 우리 몸도 허리가 휘어지듯, 하나님을 외면하면 삶이 그렇게 됩니다. 

하지만 몸보다 더 무서운 뒤틀림이 있습니다. 뭔거 같으십니까? 정신의 뒤틀림, 영혼의 뒤틀림입니다. 정신이 틀어지면 차 핸들이 엉뚱한 곳으로 꺾이듯 방향을 잃고, 영혼이 틀어지면 하나님과의 관계가 어긋나 안타까운 일이 벌어집니다. 오늘 보고 싶은 게 바로 이것입니다. 하나님을 외면한 결과가 얼마나 큰지, 어떤 삶을 살게 되는지 보겠습니다. 

22절부터 그 모습이 나옵니다. 하나님을 외면하는 사람들에겐 문제가 안 되겠지만, 우리에겐 그렇지 않은 구절들입니다. 외면한 결과 죄가 들어오고, 죄는 하나님과의 관계, 사람과의 관계, 자연과의 관계를 망가뜨립니다. 생각과 감정과 말과 행위를 오염시켜 하나님과 타인을 공격하고 배신하는 삶으로 이끕니다.

성경은 이렇게 지적합니다. 하나님을 외면하면 몸도, 정신도, 영혼도 뒤틀린다고요. 오늘 본문엔 세 가지 뒤틀림이 나옵니다. 몸의 뒤틀림은 성적인 타락, 정신의 뒤틀림은 어리석음, 영혼의 뒤틀림은 우상 숭배입니다.

2. 뒤틀림의 결과

(1) 어리석음 (1:22): 정신의 뒤틀림

첫 번째 결과는 정신의 뒤틀림입니다. 22절입니다. “스스로 지혜 있다 하나 어리석게 되어.” 하나님의 형상을 닮았기에 어리석으면 안 되는데, 어리석게 되어버렸습니다. 뼈아픈 뒤틀림이지요. 

어리석다는 건 옳고 그름, 참과 거짓을 구별 못하는 겁니다. 최고의 어리석음이 뭔지 아십니까? 어리석다는 걸 모르는 겁니다. 요즘 말로 ‘자뻑’하는 거죠. 자신에게 푹 빠져 “내가 최고야” 하는 겁니다. 22절 다시 봅니다. “인간은 스스로 똑똑한 체 하지만 실상은 어리석습니다”(공동). 이 말이 사실입니까? 인정할 수 있으시겠습니까? 똑똑한 사람들이 많죠. 그런데 그 똑똑하다는 사람들이 새끼 강아지가 어미를 잊고 떠나듯 하나님께 등을 돌립니다. 사람들에게도 등을 돌리며 아픈 일들을 쌓습니다. 

야비할 때 많고, 타인의 아픔에 무관심합니다. 머리는 좋은데 자기만 아는 사람이 얼마나 많습니까? 사랑하고 이해하는 건 못하면서 무시하고 하대하는 건 잘합니다. “아니다”라고 말하고 싶지만, 아닙니다. 똑똑한 척하지만 어리석은 겁니다. 왜냐? 성경은 어리석음을 지식의 문제가 아니라 하나님을 외면한 정신과 마음의 문제로 봅니다. 하나님을 경외할 때 옳고 그름이 보이는데, 외면하면 흐려집니다. 양심이 있어도 순간순간 무너질 때가 많습니다.

첨단 과학과 지식이 하늘을 찔러도 하나님을 인정하지 않으면 바벨탑 쌓다 무너진 사람들처럼 어리석어집니다. 파스칼이 말했습니다. “인간은 하나님 없이 자기를 이해할 수도, 세상을 바로 볼 수도 없다.” 하나님을 외면하는 어리석음은 자신과 가정과 사회를 무너뜨릴 정도로 힘이 셉니다.

(2) 우상 숭배 (1:23, 25): 영혼의 뒤틀림

두 번째 결과는 영혼의 뒤틀림, 우상 숭배입니다. 23절과 25절입니다. “썩지 아니하는 하나님의 영광을 썩어질 사람과 새와 짐승과 기어 다니는 동물 모양의 우상으로 바꾸었느니라. 이는 그들이 하나님의 진리를 거짓 것으로 바꾸어 피조물을 조물주보다 더 경배하고 섬김이라.” 

하나님이 있어야 할 자리에 하나님이 없으니 다른 걸로 채웁니다. 종교로, 좋아하는 걸로 채우다 매이게 됩니다. 하나님을 상실한 겁니다.

우상은 없으면 죽을 것처럼 느끼는 모든 겁니다. 하나님께 등을 돌리면 나타나는 요물이죠. 요물은 정신을 아찔하게 하는 건데, 그게 우상이 됩니다. 수석 모으는 취미가 없는 이상 돌멩이 보고 아찔해지진 않겠죠. 하지만 하나님을 잊을 정도로 몰두하면 영혼이 뒤틀린 겁니다. 

이런 게 없기를 바랍니다. 있다면 버려야 합니다. 우상은 존재의 목적을 빼앗고, 왜 사는지, 어디로 가는지 모르게 만듭니다. 우상을 이겨내는 길은 외면했던 하나님을 다시 주목하는 겁니다. 내 영혼의 중심에 하나님을 모시는 겁니다.

(3) 타락 (1:24, 26~27): 몸의 뒤틀림

세 번째 결과는 몸의 뒤틀림, 타락입니다. 특히 성적인 타락이죠. 24절입니다. “하나님께서 저희를 그 마음의 정욕대로 더러움에 내어 버려두사 그 몸을 서로 욕되게 하셨으니.” 26~27절입니다. “저희 여인들은 순리대로 쓸 것을 역리로 쓰며, 남자들도 여인 쓰기를 버리고 서로 향하여 음욕이 불 일듯 하매 남자가 남자로 더불어 부끄러운 일을 행하여.”

이런 모습이 정상이라고 우기는 사람들이 싫어하는 구절입니다. 하지만 이건 하나님이 주신 원래 모습에서 뒤틀린 겁니다. 성적인 타락과 하나님과의 관계는 밀접합니다. 음행은 하나님이 없는 곳에 피어나는 독버섯입니다. 하나님 없는 권력과 부와 지성, 심지어 평범한 직장인과 주부들에게까지 파고듭니다. 

음행은 뿌리치기 힘든 요물입니다. 사람의 눈을 멀게 합니다. 세상은 음행을 가볍게 보지만, 성경은 타락의 뿌리에 하나님이 없기 때문에 중요하게 여깁니다. 고린도전서 6장 18~19절입니다. “음행을 피하라… 너희 몸은 성령의 전인 줄을 알지 못하느냐.” 음행은 하나님의 창조 질서를 외면한 죄입니다. 그리스도인은 정결해야 합니다. 정결해야 타락의 회복을 위해 기도할 수 있습니다.

3. 뒤틀림의 회복

뒤틀림의 결과는 무겁습니다. 반듯하게 바로잡아야 합니다. 우상에서 벗어나고, 타락에서 돌아오고, 어리석지 않아야 합니다. 가능할까요? 가능합니다. 하지만 우리 힘으론 안 됩니다. 성령의 도움을 받아야 합니다. 하나님을 외면했던 마음을 돌이켜 주목할 때, 성령께서 도우십니다. 

뒤틀려 있던 바울을 다메섹 도상에서 회복시킨 것도 성령이었습니다. 에스겔 37장 14절입니다. “내가 너희 속에 영을 두리니 너희가 살리라.” 요한복음 16장 13절입니다. “성령이 오시면 너희를 모든 진리 가운데로 인도하리라.” 뒤틀린 마음을 고치는 건 머리가 아니라 성령입니다. 신앙과 관계와 삶이 뒤틀렸다 싶을 때마다 성령을 구해야 합니다. “성령이여, 새롭게 하소서.” 이 기도가 매일 있기를 바랍니다.

Romans 12: Twisted People (Romans 1:22–27)

1. Twisted People: The Result of Turning Away

This is our 12th time in Romans. Today, as promised, we’ll look at what happens when people turn away from God. What did we say that result was? “Twisting.” Twisting is like a door that gets warped and won’t close anymore—something that was once straight and proper becomes distorted. At first, the door fits perfectly, but then it creaks and bends. Our bodies are the same—our backs curve over time. When we turn away from God, life ends up like that.

But there’s a twisting far more painful and frightening than the body’s. What do you think it is? The twisting of the mind and the twisting of the soul. When the mind twists, it’s like a car’s steering wheel veering off course, heading somewhere strange. When the soul twists, our relationship with God goes awry, and sad, scary things happen. That’s what I want us to see today—how big the consequences of turning away from God are and what kind of life it leads to.

Starting from verse 22, we see the picture of those who turn away from God. To them, these verses might not seem like a problem, but to us, they’re different. The result of turning away is that sin creeps in, and sin twists our relationship with God, with others, and with nature itself. It pollutes our thoughts, emotions, words, and actions, driving us to attack and betray God and others, leaving our lives in turmoil.

The Bible points this out: when we turn away from God, our bodies, minds, and souls get twisted. Today’s passage shows three kinds of twisting—twisting of the body through sexual corruption, twisting of the mind through foolishness, and twisting of the soul through idol worship.

2. The Results of Twisting

(1) Foolishness (1:22): Twisting of the Mind

The first result is a twisted mind. Verse 22 says, “Claiming to be wise, they became fools.” They turn foolish. Made in God’s image, we shouldn’t be foolish, but they became that way. It’s a painful twist.

Being foolish means not being able to tell right from wrong, truth from lies—like a child who can’t control their bladder. What’s the greatest foolishness, you ask? Not knowing you’re foolish. In today’s terms, it’s being full of yourself—“I’m the best,” completely caught up in your own hype.

Look at verse 22 again: “Humans pretend to be smart, but in reality, they’re foolish” (Common Translation). Is this true? Can you accept it? Are people smart or foolish? Plenty of folks seem smart, don’t they? But those who claim to be smart turn their backs on God like puppies forgetting their mother. And it’s not just God they turn from—they turn from people too, piling up painful messes.

They’re often nasty, generally indifferent to others’ pain. So many have sharp minds but only care about themselves. They can’t love or understand, yet they’re great at ignoring and looking down on others. You want to say, “No, that’s not true,” but it is. They act smart but are foolish. Why? The Bible doesn’t see foolishness as a problem of intellect—it’s a problem of the mind and heart that comes from turning away from God. When we fear God, we see right and wrong clearly and know what to do.

But when we turn away, it all gets blurry. We’ve got a conscience, a gift from God, but it gets seared and collapses in moments.

Even if science and knowledge soar to the heavens, if we don’t acknowledge God, we end up like those who built the Tower of Babel—crashing down in foolishness. Pascal said it well: “Without God, humans can’t understand themselves or see the world rightly.” In a world where God feels absent, it’s a hard truth to grasp, but one we can’t toss aside.

The foolishness from turning away from God—back in Paul’s day and now—is a spiritual issue. Its ripple effects are no joke; it’s strong enough to wreck ourselves, our families, and society.

(2) Idol Worship (1:23, 25): Twisting of the Soul

The second result is a twisted soul—idol worship. Verses 23 and 25 say, “They exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal humans, birds, animals, and crawling things. They traded God’s truth for a lie, worshiping and serving created things rather than the Creator.” 

When God isn’t in the place He should be, we fill it with something else. With religion, with things we like—and then we get trapped by them. We lose God. Idols are anything we feel we can’t live without. The moment we turn from God, these seductive things show up. They dazzle us, mess with our heads—that’s what idols are. Unless you’re into collecting fancy rocks, a stone won’t leave you dizzy. But if you’re so caught up in something that you forget God, your soul’s twisted.

I hope you don’t have anything like that. If you do, it’s time to let it go. Idols steal your purpose—why you live, how you should live, where you’re headed all get lost. The only way to beat idols is to turn back to the God you’ve ignored, to put Him at the center of your soul, the deepest part of who you are.

(3) Corruption (1:24, 26–27): Twisting of the Body

The third result is a twisted body—corruption, especially sexual corruption. Verse 24 says, “So God gave them over to the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to dishonor their bodies with one another.” Verses 26–27 say, “Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones, and the men, leaving natural relations with women, burned with lust for one another, men committing shameful acts with men.”

Some folks who insist this is normal hate these verses. But this is a twist from the way God made things. Sexual corruption and our relationship with God are tied tight. Human history without God is a history of immorality. Immorality is like a poisonous mushroom sprouting where God isn’t. In godless power, wealth, intellect—even among regular workers and housewives—it creeps in.

Immorality’s a powerful trap. Hard to shake off, it blinds us. The world shrugs it off, but the Bible takes it seriously because at its root is the absence of God. 1 Corinthians 6:18–19 says, “Flee from sexual immorality… Don’t you know your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, given by God?”

Immorality is a sin against God’s created order. The world might say it’s not a sin, but we can’t go along with that. Sin isn’t a preference—it’s a force from turning away from God. Christians need to be pure. Only then can we pray for the healing of this corruption.

3. Healing the Twist

The results of twisting are heavy. We’ve got to straighten them out—break free from idols, turn back from corruption, stop being foolish. Is it possible? Yes, it is. But not by our own strength—we need the Holy Spirit’s help. When we turn our hearts back to the God we’ve ignored, the Spirit steps in to help us.

It was the Spirit who restored twisted Paul on the road to Damascus. Ezekiel 37:14 says, “I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live.” John 16:13 says, “When the Spirit comes, He will guide you into all truth.” It’s not our heads that fix a twisted heart—it’s the Spirit.

It’s faith. Whenever your faith, relationships, or life feel twisted, seek the Spirit. “Holy Spirit, renew me.” May that prayer be with you every day.
