로마서 19: 진실을 조심하라 (롬 2:17~29)

1. 하나님의 이름을 모독한 사람들

오늘 본문은 아프지만 중요한 말씀입니다. 17절은 유대인을 향한 것이지만, 모든 신앙인에게 해당됩니다. 24절 “너희 때문에 하나님의 이름이 이방 사람들 가운데서 모독을 받는도다”는, 나 때문에 하나님이 모욕당하는 상황을 엄중히 경고합니다. 바울이 이토록 강하게 말하는 것은 문제가 심각하고, 신앙의 본질과 직결되기 때문입니다. 이 문제를 해결하지 않고는 복음을 온전히 받아들일 수 없었기에 신랄하게 지적한 것입니다.

이들의 문제는 진실과 진리를 가졌지만, 그것을 살아내지 못했다는 것입니다. 유대인들은 율법과 할례라는 진실을 가졌고, 이를 자랑했습니다. 하나님이 직접 주신 실제이며 진실이었습니다. 17절부터 보면, 그들은 지식과 진리로 세상을 가르칠 수 있다는 자부심으로 가득했습니다. 그런데 21절을 보십시오. “다른 사람을 가르치는 네가 네 자신은 가르치지 아니하느냐 도둑질하지 말라 선포하는 네가 도둑질하느냐. 간음하지 말라 하고 간음하고, 율법을 자랑하면서 율법을 범해 하나님을 욕되게 하느냐.”

이것이 바울과 구약의 선지자들이 분노했던 이유입니다. 진실과 진리를 알면서도 하나님의 말씀에 순종하지 않고, 할례받은 백성답게 살지 못해 하나님의 이름이 모욕을 당한 것입니다.

2. 진실을 살아내라

오늘 설교 제목은 ‘진실을 조심하라’입니다. 가진 진실을 조심하지 않았고, 가지고만 있었을 뿐 살아내지 못했던 것입니다. 하나님은 우리가 무엇을 원하시는지 알면 그대로 살기를 바라십니다. 사랑하라는 진실을 안다면, 사랑을 보여주어야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 허세에 불과합니다. 내가 욕먹는 것을 넘어 하나님과 교회까지 욕먹게 됩니다.

하나님과 율법, 할례라는 진실을 아는 것만으로는 부족합니다. 알고 있는 진실을 실체화하여 살아내야 진실이 진실되고 진리가 진리가 됩니다. 사무엘상 4장에서 이스라엘은 언약궤를 가져오면 이길 줄 알았지만, 패배하고 법궤까지 빼앗겼습니다. 순종 없이 외형만으로는 안 된다는 것을 보여줍니다.

하나님이 계시고 말씀, 약속, 성전이 있었던 이스라엘이 왜 바벨론에 포로로 잡혀갔을까요? 가진 진실과 진리를 조심하지 않고 순종하지 않아 하나님의 이름이 모욕을 당한 것입니다. 진실과 진리는 자랑하라고 주신 것이 아니라, 살아서 실체가 되라고 주신 것입니다. 진실을 살아내는 것은 진실을 가진 자의 의무입니다.

3. 진실을 조심하라

진실과 진리를 살아내지 못하면 겉과 속이 다른 외식에 빠집니다. 말과 행동, 아는 것과 사는 것이 다르게 됩니다. 예배에 나와도 예배가 없고, 봉사해도 기쁨이 없으며, 사랑한다면서 속은 쓰립니다. 진실을 조심하지 않으면 우리도 유대인처럼 하나님의 이름을 욕되게 할 수 있습니다.

하나님의 이름이 모독받지 않게 할 책임과 의무가 우리 신자들에게 있습니다. “내가 뭘 할 수 있겠나?” 하는 마음부터 바꿔야 합니다. 이는 주신 진실을 가리는 태도입니다. 하나님의 영광은 ‘나’ 때문에 욕을 먹을 수 있습니다. 그러므로 주신 진실과 진리대로 살아야 합니다.

진실은 말씀에 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 유치하다 생각할 정도로 시시콜콜 말씀하십니다. 사랑하라, 용서하라, 기도하라, 시기하지 말라 등. 이것이 하나님이 주신 진실이며, 우리를 보호하는 울타리입니다. 하나님이 하라는 진실에 신경 쓰고 마음이 가면 희망이 있습니다.

진실을 무시하면 안 됩니다. 약효에 부정적인 사람이 약을 먹으면 효과가 떨어지는 ‘노시보 현상’처럼, 신앙에서도 가진 진실을 부정하고 감정과 신념만 앞세우면 하나님의 이름이 모독당합니다. 이를 막아야 합니다. 외식과 위선은 진실에 조심하지 않을 때 나타나는 허상입니다.

신앙에서만큼은 탈진실이 없어야 합니다. 하나님이 주신 진실이 답입니다. 아는 것에 만족하지 말고 살아내야 합니다. 사랑, 온유, 인내, 겸손. 이것이 현실과 실체가 되어야 합니다. 빌립보서 2장 12절처럼 “두렵고 떨림으로 너희의 구원을 이루라”는 것은, 말씀과 약속, 구원을 삶에 나타내라는 의미입니다.

주님을 믿는다고 쉽게 생각하지 말고, 진실을 위해 싸우는 노력이 필요합니다. 말과 행동, 선택 하나하나에 하나님의 진실과 마음이 담겨야 합니다. 세상은 진실을 싫어하고 환영하지 않아 힘들 수 있지만, 이 고난은 우리의 신앙을 견고하게 합니다.

우리는 진실을 어떻게 대하고 있습니까? 진실을 조심하고 있습니까? 당연한 듯 여기지 말고 진실을 돌아보고, 진실에 조심합시다. 하나님의 이름이 나 때문에 영광을 받는 기쁨과 보람이 있기를 바랍니다.

Romans 19: Beware of the Truth (Romans 2:17~29)

1. Those Who Blasphemed God’s Name

Today’s passage is painful but crucial. Verse 17 addresses the Jews, but it applies to all believers. Verse 24, “Because of you God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles,” sternly warns against situations where God is dishonored because of us. Paul’s strong words highlight the severity of the problem, directly tied to the essence of faith. He spoke sharply because this issue had to be resolved for the gospel through Jesus Christ to be fully embraced.

Their problem was that they possessed the truth and reality but failed to live it out. The Jews had the truth of the Law and circumcision, and they boasted about it. These were real and true, given directly by God. From verse 17, they were full of pride, believing their knowledge and truth could enlighten the world. But look at verse 21: “You, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law, dishonor God by breaking the law.”

This was why Paul and the Old Testament prophets were indignant. Though they knew the truth and reality, they disobeyed God’s word and failed to live as God’s chosen people, causing God’s name to be blasphemed.

2. Live Out the Truth

Today’s sermon title is ‘Beware of the Truth’. They did not heed the truth they possessed; they merely had it but did not live it out. God desires us to live according to what we know He wants. If we know the truth of love, we must demonstrate it. Otherwise, it’s just pretense. Not only will we be disgraced, but God and the church will be too.

Knowing God, the Law, and circumcision is not enough. The truth we know must be actualized and lived out for it to be true and real. In 1 Samuel 4, Israel thought they would win by bringing the Ark of the Covenant, but they were defeated, and the Ark was captured. This shows that outward forms without obedience are meaningless.

Why was Israel, who had God, the Word, the promise, and the Temple, taken captive by Babylon? Because they did not heed the truth and reality they possessed, and they disobeyed, leading to the blasphemy of God’s name. The truth and reality were given not for boasting, but to be lived and embodied. Living out the truth is the duty of those who possess it.

3. Beware of the Truth

If we fail to live out the truth and reality, we fall into hypocrisy, where our words and actions, knowledge and life, diverge. We may attend worship but lack true worship, serve without joy, and claim to love while our hearts are bitter. If we are not careful with the truth, we too can dishonor God’s name like the Jews.

The responsibility and duty to prevent God’s name from being blasphemed rest upon us believers who possess divine truths like God, His Word, and His promises. We must change our mindset from “What can I do?” This attitude obscures the truth God has given us. God’s glory can be dishonored ‘because of us.’ Therefore, we must live according to the truth and reality given to us.

The truth is in God’s Word. God speaks to us in detail, even to the point we might consider it childish: love, forgive, pray, do not envy, etc. This is the truth God has given us, a fence for our protection. If we pay attention to and care about the truth God commands, there is hope.

We must not disregard the truth. Just as the ‘nocebo effect’ shows that negative beliefs can diminish a drug’s effectiveness, in faith, if we reject the truth we have and prioritize our emotions and convictions, God’s name will be blasphemed. We must prevent this. Hypocrisy and pretense are illusions that arise when we are not careful with the truth.

In faith, there must be no post-truth. The truth God has given is the answer. He gave us His Word to live out. We must not be content with knowing but actualize it. Love, gentleness, patience, humility—these must become our reality and substance. As Philippians 2:12 states, “continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,” meaning to manifest the Word, promises, and salvation in our lives.

We should not take our faith in the Lord lightly; the struggle to live out the truth is necessary. Every word, action, and choice must embody God’s truth and heart. Then, a sincere life, consistent in outward appearance and inner reality, will emerge. The world dislikes and rejects the truth, making it difficult at times. However, this hardship refines and strengthens our faith.

How are we treating the truth? Are we being careful with it? Let’s not take it for granted but reflect on the truth and be mindful of it. I pray that we may experience the joy and reward of God’s name being glorified because of us.
