부활, 과거에서 미래까지(요5:24~29)

1. 너무 먼 부활

부활(復活)이라는 말은 소중합니다. ‘다시 살아난다’는 말, 얼마나 귀합니까? 무너진 사람이 다시 일어나고, 눈물 가득했던 사람이 기뻐하며, 죽음의 그늘 속에 있던 사람이 희망을 품는다면 감격할 이유가 충분합니다. ‘부활’의 소망을 버리지 말고 꼭 붙잡읍시다.

아쉬운 것은 이 단어가 멀게 느껴진다는 것입니다. 사는 게 버거울수록 주님의 부활 안에 나를 살리는 능력이 있음을 체험해야 합니다. 부활은 과거의 사건으로 끝나지 않습니다. 부활에는 과거의 부활, 현재의 부활, 미래의 부활, 이 세 가지가 있습니다. 이 세 부활이 모두 중요합니다. 

2. 세 가지 부활

(1) 과거의 부활

과거의 부활은 부활이 없던 세상에 부활이 있음을 알린 사건입니다. 십자가의 죽음으로 모든 것이 끝난 줄 알았는데, 무덤의 돌이 굴러가고 죽으셨던 주님이 약속하신 대로 살아나셨습니다. ‘허구다, 전설이다’ 말하는 이들이 많지만, 부활은 허구가 아니라 역사의 증언입니다.

부활을 통해 하나님은 세상의 죽음과 절망에 대해 결정적인 ‘아니오’를 선언하셨습니다. 부활은 죽음의 종말을 알리는 하나님의 승리입니다. 고린도전서 15:17에서 바울은 “그리스도께서 살아나지 않으셨다면 우리의 믿음은 헛된 것”이라고 말했습니다. 과거의 부활이 없었다면 현재와 미래의 부활도 모래 위에 지은 집일 것입니다. 죽음을 깨버리신 과거의 부활은 하나님께서 이 세상에 던지신 생명의 깃발입니다.

산등성이에 핀 꽃 한 송이가 봄을 알리듯, 예수님의 부활은 인간 역사 가운데 핀 첫 번째 꽃입니다. 예수님이 피우신 부활의 꽃으로 우리는 압니다. 봄이 시작되었다, 우리에게도 부활이 온다. 과거의 부활은 끝난 사건이 아니라 ‘열린 문’입니다. 이 문을 지나야 현재와 미래의 부활로 나아갈 수 있습니다. 

(2) 현재의 부활

현재의 부활은 과거의 부활이 성령을 통해 우리 안에서 실현된 사건입니다. 십자가와 부활은 2천 년 전에 끝난 이야기가 아닙니다. 부활하신 주님께서 우리와 함께하시며 우리를 부활시키십니다. 현재의 부활은 과거의 부활을 믿는 ‘나의 부활’이자 ‘그리스도인의 부활’입니다.

요한복음 5:25은 이렇게 말합니다. “죽은 자들이 하나님의 아들의 음성을 들을 때가 오나니, 곧 이 때라 듣는 자는 살아나리라.” 하나님의 음성을 듣는 것은 죽은 이후만이 아니라 지금 현재의 사건입니다. 말씀을 듣는 자는 오늘도 살아납니다. 현재의 부활은 과거와 미래의 부활 사이에서 부활의 능력을 체험하게 합니다. 바울은 빌립보서 3:10~11에서 “그리스도를 알고 그분의 부활의 능력을 깨닫고, 죽은 자들 가운데 살아나는 부활에 이르고 싶다”고 고백했습니다. 주님만 부활해서는 안 됩니다. 우리도 부활해야 합니다.

실패로 주저앉고, 눈물로 밤을 지새우고, 불면의 밤으로 힘들 때, 기도가 막히고 말씀이 들리지 않을 때마다 부활해야 합니다. “일어나, 끝나지 않았어. 내 능력을 받아. 내가 너를 살려!” 이 음성이 들려야 합니다.

현재의 부활은 한 번의 사건이 아니라 부활을 믿는 자가 선택하는 매일의 사건입니다. 오늘 다시 일어나는 것, 용서해 보는 것, 기도해 보는 것, 이 하나하나가 모여 현재의 부활을 만듭니다. 부활은 어제의 기억이 아니라 오늘을 살게 하시는 하나님의 선물입니다.

(3) 미래의 부활

미래의 부활은 이 땅의 삶을 마감한 후 맞이하는 새로운 생명입니다. 요한복음 5:28~29에서 주님은 말씀하십니다. “무덤 속에 있는 자가 다 그의 음성을 들을 때가 오나니, 선한 일을 행한 자는 생명의 부활로, 악한 일을 행한 자는 심판의 부활로 나오리라.” 미래의 부활은 죄로 무너졌던 하나님의 창조가 회복되는 사건입니다.

고린도전서 15:42~44는 말합니다. “썩을 것으로 심는데 썩지 않을 것으로, 비천한 것으로 심는데 영광스러운 것으로, 약한 것으로 심는데 강한 것으로, 자연적인 몸으로 심는데 신령한 몸으로 살아납니다.”

이 땅에서 우리는 약해지고 병들며 마음이 상하고 관계가 깨어집니다. 사랑하는 이들이 떠나가고, 언젠가는 무덤에 이르게 됩니다. 하지만 주님이 살아나셨기에 우리도 다시 살아납니다. 미래의 부활은 개인을 넘어 전 우주가 새로워지는 하나님과의 온전한 연합입니다. 로마서 8:18은 “지금의 고난은 장차 나타날 영광에 비하면 아무것도 아니다”라고 약속합니다.

이해인 시인은 노래합니다. “기쁨을 쏟아내며 우리는 부활하신 당신을 닮고 싶습니다. 날마다 새롭게 생명의 수액을 뿜어 올리는 생명나무이고 싶습니다.” 이 소망이 있기에 우리는 절망 앞에서도 무너지지 않습니다. 

3. 목적지

옛날 자동차 없는 시절, 길을 떠난 이들이 쓰러지지 않고 걷게 만든 힘은 지나가는 풍경이 아니라 도착할 목적지였습니다. 힘들어도 목적지를 바라보며 걸었습니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 고단한 인생길, 힘들지만 가야 할 목적지가 있습니다. 우리에게는 부활의 몸을 입는 날, 눈물도 아픔도 죄도 사망도 없는 하나님의 영광이 가득한 그곳이 있습니다.

미래의 부활은 막연한 상상이 아니라 예수님의 부활로 입증된 하나님의 약속입니다. 2천 년 전 무덤이 열리고 살아나신 주님의 부활은 어제의 기적이 아니라, 오늘 우리의 삶을 살리고 내일 우리를 영광으로 이끄는 능력입니다.

주님은 말씀하십니다. “나는 부활이요 생명이니, 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살고, 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리라. 네가 이것을 믿느냐?”(요 11:25~26) 믿읍시다. 과거의 부활로 믿음을 굳건히 하고, 현재의 부활로 새롭게 일어나며, 미래의 부활로 소망을 품읍시다. 

Resurrection: From Past to Future (John 5:24–29)

1. A Resurrection That Feels Too Distant

The word “resurrection” is precious. “To live again”—how valuable is that? If a broken person rises again, if someone filled with tears rejoices, if someone under the shadow of death stands up and embraces hope, there is more than enough reason to be moved. Let us never abandon the hope of resurrection but hold fast to it.

Yet, it is regrettable that this word feels so distant. The harder life becomes, the more we must experience the power within the Lord’s resurrection that brings us to life. Resurrection is not merely a past event.

Resurrection encompasses three dimensions: the resurrection of the past, the resurrection of the present, and the resurrection of the future. All three are vital. 

2. The Three Resurrections

(1) The Resurrection of the Past

The resurrection of the past is the event that proclaimed the reality of resurrection in a world where it was unknown. It seemed that everything had ended with the death on the cross, but the stone of the tomb was rolled away, and the Lord, who had died, rose again as promised. Many say it is “fiction” or “legend,” but resurrection is not a myth—it is a testimony of history.

Through resurrection, God declared a decisive “No” to the world’s death and despair. Resurrection is God’s victory, announcing the end of death. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:17, “If Christ has not been raised, our faith is futile.” Without the resurrection of the past, the resurrections of the present and future would be like houses built on sand. The past resurrection, which shattered death, is the banner of life that God raised in this world.

Just as a single flower blooming on a mountainside heralds spring, Jesus’ resurrection is the first flower to bloom in human history. Through the flower of resurrection that Jesus brought forth, we know: spring has begun, and resurrection is coming to us as well. The past resurrection is not a concluded event but an “open door.” Only by passing through this door can we advance to the resurrections of the present and the future.

(2) The Resurrection of the Present

The resurrection of the present is the realization of the past resurrection within us through the Holy Spirit. The cross and resurrection are not stories that ended 2,000 years ago. The risen Lord is with us, bringing us to life. The resurrection of the present is “my resurrection” and the “resurrection of Christians” who believe in the past resurrection.

John 5:25 declares, “The hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.” Hearing God’s voice is not only for after death but is an event of this very moment. Those who hear the Word live today. The resurrection of the present enables us to experience the power of resurrection between the past and the future.

Paul confesses in Philippians 3:10–11, “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection, and attain to the resurrection from the dead.” It is not enough for the Lord alone to rise; we too must rise.

When we collapse in failure, spend nights in tears, struggle through sleepless nights, or feel blocked in prayer and unable to hear the Word, we must rise again. We must hear the voice: “Arise, it is not over. Receive my power. I will make you live!”

The resurrection of the present is not a one-time event but a daily choice for those who believe in resurrection.

Rising again today, trying to forgive today, praying again today—these small acts build the resurrection of the present. Resurrection is not a memory of yesterday but God’s gift that enables us to live today. 

(3) The Resurrection of the Future

The resurrection of the future is the new life we will receive after completing our earthly journey. In John 5:28–29, the Lord says, “The hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.”

The resurrection of the future is the event in which God’s creation, broken by sin, is restored.

1 Corinthians 15:42–44 states, “What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.”

In this world, we grow weak, fall ill, have wounded hearts, and see relationships break. Loved ones depart, and eventually, we reach the grave. But because the Lord rose, we too will rise again. The resurrection of the future is not just personal but the complete renewal of the entire cosmos in perfect union with God.

Romans 8:18 promises, “The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed.”

The poet Hyunein Lee sings, “Pouring out joy, we all want to resemble the risen You. We want to be trees of life, daily pumping up the sap of new life.” Because of this hope, we do not collapse in the face of despair. 

3. The Destination

In the past, when there were no cars, what kept travelers from falling as they walked was not the beauty of the passing scenery but the destination they aimed for. Though it was hard, they walked with their eyes fixed on their goal. It is the same for us.

The journey of life is weary and difficult, but we have a destination to reach. We have the day when we will be clothed in resurrected bodies, a place filled with God’s glory, where there are no tears, no pain, no sin, and no death.

The resurrection of the future is not a vague fantasy but a promise of God, proven by Jesus’ resurrection. The resurrection of the Lord, who rose 2,000 years ago when the tomb was opened, is not a miracle of yesterday. It is the power that brings us to life today and leads us to glory tomorrow.

The Lord declares, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25–26).

Let us believe. Let us strengthen our faith through the resurrection of the past, rise anew through the resurrection of the present, and hold fast to hope through the resurrection of the future.
