로마서 11: 외면하는 사람들(롬 1:19~21)

1. 외면, 뒤틀림, 무너짐

오늘은 ‘외면하는 사람들’이라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하겠습니다. 1장은 32절까지인데 19절부터는 지난 주에 봤던 하나님의 진노(1:18)가 왜 필요하고, 어떤 사람들에게 임하는지를 다룹니다.

세 단계로 이어지는 인간의 타락이 나옵니다. 하나님을 외면하다가 뒤틀리게 되고, 삶이 무너지는 흐름입니다.이 부분을 세 번에 걸쳐 보려고 합니다. 외면하는 사람들, 뒤틀린 사람들, 무너진 사람들입니다.

죄의 모습들이 나오지만, 말씀으로 남겨 주셨으니 무겁더라도 봐야 합니다. 오늘은 세 가지를 살펴봅니다. 사람들은 왜 하나님을 외면할까? 하나님을 외면하면 어떤 일이 일어나는가? 외면을 어떻게 극복할까? 

2. 외면하는 사람들

(1) 외면의 이유

사람들은 왜 하나님을 외면할까요? 외면은 모르는 척 하는 것입니다. 몰라서가 아니라 아는데도 등을 돌리는 것입니다. 외면 당하면 기분 나쁩니다. 19절과 20절을 보면, 바울은 하나님을 알 수 있는 단서가 사람 안에 있고, 자연 만물 속에 새겨져 있다고 합니다.

19절. 하나님을 알만한 것이 사람들의 본성 속에 있다.

20절. 창조하신 삼라만상을 보면 핑계할 수 없다. 그런데도 등을 돌립니다.

모르는 척하는 것이 문제입니다. 하나님께 무슨 억하 심정이 있을까요? 이유를 4가지로 정리했습니다. 간섭하지마. 놓치기 싫어. 다 똑같아. 살기가 왜 이렇게 힘들어.우리 시대의 모습이 담긴 단어들입니다. 

① 간섭하지마.- 자기 중심성의 반발

첫 번째는 ‘간섭하지마’입니다. 많이 듣는 말입니다. 얘들도 쓰고, 어른들도 씁니다. ‘내버려 둬. 상관하지마.’ 급기야 하나님에게까지 씁니다.하나님을 간섭하는 분으로 아는 것입니다. 하라, 하지마라. 오해고 편견인데, 이런 오해가 퍼져 있습니다. 신앙생활하면 간섭이 들어오니 불편합니다.

C.S.루이스는 말했습니다. ‘사람들은 하나님을 부정하려 논리를 끌어오지만, 진실은 순종하지 않아도 되는 자유를 원하기 때문이다’. 간섭은 신앙의 장애물이고, 하나님을 외면하게 하는 이유입니다. 

② 놓치고 싶지 않아-소유의 집착

두 번째는 “놓치고 싶지 않아서”입니다. 하나님을 빼앗는 분으로 아는 이들이 많습니다. 뭘 뺏길까요? 헌금내라. 돈 뺏기고. 교회 나와라. 시간 뺏기고. 재미있는 건 하지마라. 자유 뺏깁니다. 시간, 돈, 자유. 뺏기기 싫은데, 뺏아간다고 생각합니다. 믿으려 해도 불편합니다. 내 것이라 생각했는데 하나님 것이라 들을 때 기분 나쁘고 두렵습니다.

하나님을 모르면 나올 반응입니다. 하지만 놓치고 싶지 않은 것들이 올무가 됩니다. 순식간에 사라집니다.하나님은 이런 매임에서 풀어주고 싶으십니다. 돈도 시간도 네 것이 아니다. 청지기의 삶을 살라.

하나님을 인정하고 얻는 것이 외면하고 얻는 것보다 크면, 놓는게 현명합니다. 놓치고 싶지 않은 것 때문에 하나님을 놓치지 않기를 바랍니다. 

③ 다 똑같아-냉소와 실망

세 번째는 “다 똑같아”라는 냉소입니다. 믿는 너희나 우리나 다를 게 없다는 것입니다. 속은 하나도 다를 게 없으면 믿고 싶겠습니까? 신자들의 위선은 뼈아픈 이유입니다. 로마서 2:24. “너희 때문에 하나님의 이름이 모독을 받는다.” 진리가 싫은 게 아니라 그릇이 싫은 것입니다. 실망이 냉소를 낳고, 냉소가 하나님을 멀리합니다. 종교가 교회뿐인가? 점집으로 가자. 다 똑같다. 

④ 살기가 왜 이렇게 힘들어- 고통속 항의

고통과 부조리한 세상을 보며 하나님을 외면합니다. 살기가 힘든데 하나님은 뭐하십니까? 푸념 같지만 외침입니다.이렇게 둘겁니까? 있기나 합니까?

힘든 삶을 살아봤기에 이해합니다. 토마슨 머튼은 ‘고통은 하나님을 찾는 문이 될 수도, 밀어내는 벽이 될 수도 있다’고 했습니다. 고통 속에서 하나님을 발견하면 깊게 만날 수 있습니다. 눈물 흘리는 자리에 십자가의 주님이 계십니다. 주님은 외면하지 않으셨습니다. 외면은 우리의 특기지 주님의 특기는 아닙니다. 주님의 특기는 바라봄입니다. 

(2) 외면의 결과

하나님께 등을 돌리면 어떻게 될까요? 하는 일마다 실패할까요? 간혹 그럴 수도 있지만 결과는 영적입니다. 영적인 황폐와 우상 숭배가 일어납니다. 

① 영적인 황폐

21절에 나옵니다. ‘하나님을 알되 영화롭게도 아니하며 감사하지도 아니하고 생각이 허망하여지며 마음이 어두워졌습니다’ 외면하면 감사와 영광 대신 어둠 가득한 황폐가 일어납니다. 하나님을 바라보는 것과 등을 돌리는 것은 다릅니다. 한쪽은 생기와 평안이, 한쪽은 불안과 불만이 지배합니다.

빛이 들어오는 창문과 빛이 없는 창문의 차이입니다. 하나님을 바라보는 삶에는 영혼의 아름다움이 있습니다. 이 아름다움이 있기를 바랍니다.

② 우상의 등장

외면한 삶에 우상이 나타납니다. 21절의 허망한 생각이 만든 결과입니다. 하나님이 있어야 할 자리를 우상이 차지합니다. 돈, 성공, 인정 같은 우상들이 자리잡고 힘을 발휘합니다. 돈은 불안하게, 성공은 시달리게, 인정은 평가에 매이게 합니다. 외면은 삶의 구조를 바꿔버리는 중대한 일입니다. 

3. 신자들의 외면과 극복

(1) 신자의 외면

신앙인들은 이 사실을 잘 알아야 합니다. 아쉽게도 신자들도 하나님을 외면합니다. 뼈아프고 속상한 일입니다. 베드로가 주님을 외면한 것처럼(마26:75), 요나가 도망간 것처럼(욘1:3) 우리도 조심해야 합니다. 신자가 등을 돌리면 누가 하나님을 바라보겠습니까? 우리가 잘해야 남도 잘합니다. 

(2) 외면의 극복

극복은 우리부터 시작해야 합니다. 등 돌리지 말고 잘보는 것입니다. 하나님을 선명히 바라보는 삶을 살아야 합니다.’하나님을 알만한 것이 우리 안에 있습니다.'(1:19). 하나님은 곳곳에 흔적을 남기셨습니다. 더 잘 보면 좋겠습니다.

세상이 외면해도 우리는 등 돌리면 안 됩니다. 마음의 눈으로 하나님을 깊게 응시하는 은혜가 있기를 바랍니다. 

Romans 11: Those Who Turn Away (Rom 1:19-21)

1. Turning Away, Distortion, Collapse

Today, I will deliver a message titled “Those Who Turn Away.” Chapter 1 goes up to verse 32, but from verse 19, it addresses why God’s wrath (1:18), which we saw last week, is necessary and to whom it applies.

It shows three stages of human depravity: turning away from God, becoming distorted, and life collapsing. I intend to explore this over three sessions: those who turn away, those who are distorted, and those who collapse.

The forms of sin emerge here, but what can we do? It has been left to us in the Word, so we must look at it, even if it’s heavy. Today, we will examine three questions: Why do people turn away from God? What happens when they turn away from God? How can we overcome turning away? 

2. Those Who Turn Away

(1) Reasons for Turning Away

Why do people turn away from God? Turning away means pretending not to know. It’s not ignorance out of not knowing but turning one’s back despite knowing. Being turned away from feels quite bad. Verses 19 and 20 say that Paul claims there are clues to knowing God within people and inscribed clearly in the natural world.

20. When looking at the creation of all things, there is no excuse. Yet they turn their backs.

Pretending not to know is the issue. What resentment could there be toward God to pretend not to know and turn away? There are many reasons, but I’ve summarized them into four: “Don’t interfere.” “I don’t want to lose it.” “It’s all the same.” “Why is life so hard?” These words fully reflect the state of our era turning away from God. 

① Don’t Interfere – Rebellion of Self-Centeredness

The first reason is “Don’t interfere.” We hear this a lot. Kids use it, adults use it. “Leave me alone. Don’t meddle.” Eventually, they even say it to God.

They see God as someone who interferes—telling them, “Do this, don’t do that.” It’s a misunderstanding and prejudice, but this misunderstanding has spread widely. The moment they live a life of faith, it feels like “interference” comes in, so it’s uncomfortable and bothersome.

C.S. Lewis said, “People bring all sorts of arguments to deny God, but the truth is they want the freedom of not having to obey Him if they don’t believe.”

Interference is a serious obstacle to faith. It’s a key reason people turn away from God. 

② I Don’t Want to Lose It – Obsession with Possession

The second reason for turning away is “I don’t want to lose it.” Many see God as someone who takes things away. What do they think He takes?

“Give an offering.” Money gets taken. “Come to church on your day off.” Time gets taken. “Don’t do anything fun.” Freedom gets taken.

Time, money, freedom. They don’t want these taken, but they think God takes them. Even if they want to believe, this feels uncomfortable. They thought these were theirs, but every time they hear they belong to God, it feels bad and frightening.

It’s a reaction that can easily arise if you don’t know God. But think about it for a moment. Don’t the things you don’t want to lose become snares that make life so hard? Even if you don’t want to lose them, they vanish in an instant.

God knows this and wants to free you from such bondage. Money, time, freedom—they’re not yours. Think of it lightly. They’re just entrusted to you for a time. Don’t be bound by them. You are a steward. Live the life of a steward.

If what you gain by acknowledging God is greater and more valuable than what you gain by turning away, letting go is wise. I hope you don’t lose God because of the things you don’t want to lose. 

③ It’s All the Same – Cynicism and Disappointment

The third reason for turning away is the cynicism of “It’s all the same.” What’s the same?

They say there’s no difference between you who believe in God and us who turn away. If they think there’s no difference inside despite outward appearances, how could they want to believe?

Disappointment in believers and their hypocrisy is a painful reason for turning away.

Romans 2:24 says, “Because of you, God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles.” It’s not the truth they dislike but the vessel holding the truth.

Disappointment breeds cynicism, and cynicism drives God further away. Is religion only the church? “Let’s go to the mountains, to Hannam-dong, to a fortune teller.” It’s all the same. Religion is just something humans made up. 

④ Why Is Life So Hard? – Protest in Pain

On top of that, seeing the pain and injustice of the world leads them to turn away from God. “Life is so hard—what is God doing?” It seems like a grumble, but it’s a cry toward God.

“Are You just going to leave it like this? Are You even there? Can’t You see this mess?” Having lived a hard life, I can fully understand it. As Thomas Merton said, “Pain can either be a door to finding God or a wall that pushes Him away,” so if you discover God in pain, you can meet Him more deeply than when life is easy.

In the place where tears fall, where heads are bowed, the Lord of the cross is already there. The Lord did not turn away; He came first to the place of suffering. Turning away is our specialty, not the Lord’s. The Lord’s specialty is looking at us. 

(2) The Consequences of Turning Away

What happens when you turn your back on God? Will everything you do fail? Will only hardships come? That might happen sometimes, but the consequence is not material—it’s spiritual. Spiritual desolation and idol worship arise. 

① Spiritual Desolation

Verse 21 describes those who turn away: “They knew God but did not glorify Him or give thanks, and their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”

When you turn away from God, instead of a soul filled with gratitude and glory, a dark, desolate soul emerges. The difference between looking to God and turning your back on Him is significant. One side has vitality, peace, and gratitude; the other is ruled by dryness, anxiety, and discontent.

It’s like the difference between a window with light streaming in and one covered by curtains with no light. You might call it bias, but a life that doesn’t turn away and looks to God has the beauty of a soul crafted by God’s Spirit. I hope this beauty is in many of you. 

② The Rise of Idols

What inevitably happens in a life that turns away from God is the rise of “idols.” Idols are the result of the futile, empty thoughts in verse 21. The place where God should be is taken over by idols.

What kind of idols take over? It’s embarrassing to say, but idols like money, success, and recognition take root and wield surprising power.

They bind us. Money makes us anxious, success wears us out, recognition ties us to others’ evaluations. Without realizing it, they control and swallow us.

You might think turning away from God is no big deal, but it’s not. It’s a major matter that completely changes the structure and way of life. 

3. Believers’ Turning Away and Overcoming It

(1) Believers’ Turning Away

Believers should know this better than anyone. Sadly, turning away from God happens even among believers. This is a more painful and upsetting turning away. We turn our backs on God.

Like Peter turning away from the Lord at a critical moment (Matt 26:75), or Jonah turning and fleeing because it didn’t suit him (Jonah 1:3), we must be cautious that we too can turn away. If those who claim to know God turn their backs, who will look to God after seeing this? If we do well, others will too. 

(2) Overcoming Turning Away

Overcoming turning away starts with us. It’s about not turning our backs but looking well. We must live a life that gazes clearly and distinctly at God.

“What may be known about God is within us” (1:19). God has left traces everywhere for us to recognize Him. I hope we can see better than we do now.

Even if the whole world turns away, we must not. I pray that we may have the grace to live gazing deeply at God with brighter eyes of the heart and soul.
