로마서 8: 자랑스런 복음 (롬 1:16~17)

지난주에는 부끄러워하는 복음에 대해 말씀드렸습니다. 오늘은 자랑스러워하는 복음에 대해 나누겠습니다. 바울은 로마서 1:16에서 이렇게 선언합니다. “나는 복음을 부끄러워하지 않습니다. 이 복음은 모든 믿는 사람을 구원하는 하나님의 능력입니다.” 이 말은 곧, 복음이 자랑스럽다는 뜻입니다. 로마의 세력은 크고, 세상의 힘은 막강하지만, 나는 이 복음이 자랑스럽습니다. 당신들도 이 복음을 부끄러워하지 말고 자랑스럽게 여기십시오. 이것은 로마 시대의 교인들뿐만 아니라, 오늘을 살아가는 우리 모두에게도 절실한 고백입니다.

1. 부끄러움과 자랑

부끄러움과 자랑, 이 두 감정은 가볍게 넘길 수 없는 문제입니다. 부끄러움은 초라함에서 오고, 자랑은 우월감에서 옵니다. 둘 다 비교에서 시작됩니다. 비교하는 순간 감정이 요동칩니다. 초라하면 속상하고, 억울하고, 자책하게 됩니다. 우월하면 교만해지고, 자랑하고 싶어집니다. 이 두 감정은 쉽게 충돌하고, 결국 갈등을 만들어냅니다.

비교는 끝없는 경쟁을 만들어냅니다. 초라한 사람은 자랑하는 사람을 보며 무력감과 질투에 빠집니다. “나는 왜 이렇게 부족한가?” 하는 생각이 마음을 짓누릅니다. 반대로 우월한 자는 교만해지고, 스스로를 높이며 다른 이를 무시합니다. 결국 초라한 자는 분노하고, 우월한 자는 자랑으로 상대를 깎아내립니다. 이런 감정의 충돌은 사회를 갈라놓고, 가정을 무너뜨리며, 신앙까지 병들게 합니다.

그래서 우리는 물어야 합니다. “나는 무엇을 부끄러워하는가? 나는 무엇을 자랑하고 있는가?” 우리의 자랑이 세상적 자랑인지, 신앙적 자랑인지 점검해야 합니다.

2. 신자의 태도

우리는 부끄러움과 자랑 사이에서 방황하는 이들에게 길을 보여줄 사명이 있습니다. 초라함이 엄습할 때, 우리는 하나님의 사랑받는 자녀라는 사실을 기억해야 합니다. 우월함이 교만으로 변하려 할 때, 우리는 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜임을 기억해야 합니다.

성경은 세상적 자랑과 신앙적 자랑을 구별합니다. 렘 9:23은 말합니다. “지혜로운 자는 그의 지혜를 자랑하지 말며, 용사는 그의 용맹을 자랑하지 말며, 부자는 그의 부함을 자랑하지 말지니라.” 이런 자랑은 잠깐이고, 공허하며, 결국 갈등을 일으킵니다. 잠언 27:2은 말합니다. “타인이 너를 칭찬하게 하고, 네 입으로는 하지 말지니라.” 스스로를 자랑하지 않는 것이 성경의 지혜입니다. 고전 1:31은 선언합니다. “자랑하는 자는 주 안에서 자랑하라.” 즉, 자랑의 중심에 나 자신이 아니라 주님이 계셔야 합니다.

자신을 자랑하면 상처를 주지만, 하나님을 자랑하면 약한 자들이 위로받습니다(시 34:2). 그러므로 우리는 다시 물어야 합니다. “나는 무엇을 자랑하고 있는가?”

3. 신자의 자랑

(1) 복음.

우리의 유일한 자랑은 복음입니다. 초라한 자도, 우월한 자도 살릴 수 있는 유일한 자랑이 바로 복음입니다. 우리는 복음, 구원, 하나님의 능력을 자랑해야 합니다.

복음이 무엇입니까? 복음은 하나님이 세상을 뒤흔드신 이야기입니다. 하나님은 세상의 미련한 자들로 지혜로운 자들을 부끄럽게 하시고, 약한 자들로 강한 자들을 부끄럽게 하십니다. 세상의 차별과 억압을 깨뜨리고, 초라한 자도, 우월한 자도 동일한 하나님의 사랑받는 자녀로 부르시는 소식이 복음입니다.

복음을 자랑하지 않는 것이 이상한 것 아닙니까? 세상의 가치와 기준은 사람을 나누고, 비교하게 만듭니다. 그러나 하나님은 “너는 내 사랑하는 자녀”라고 말씀하십니다. 세상의 부끄러움과 우월함을 뛰어넘는 하나님의 은혜가 복음입니다.

(2) 구원.

구원이 무엇입니까? 구원은 하나님이 차별 없이 모든 자를 살리시는 것입니다. 쉽게 말하면, 버려진 폐지를 예술 작품으로 바꾸시는 하나님의 손길입니다. 우리는 죄로 인해 구겨지고 찢긴 존재이지만, 하나님은 우리를 걸작으로 만드십니다. 초라한 자는 붙여서 걸작으로 만드시고, 우월한 자는 깎아서 걸작으로 만드십니다.

(3). 하나님의 능력

우리의 세 번째 자랑은 하나님의 능력입니다. 하나님은 강하신 당신의 능력을 가지고 끝에서 시작을 만드십니다. 세상이 ‘여기까지야’라고 선을 그으면 하나님은 ‘여기서부터야’라고 말하면서 선을 지워버립니다.

가장 슬프고, 아픈 단어가 뭡니까? ‘끝났어’라는 말 아닙니까? 폭력의 단어입니다. 끝났어라는 말은 어떤 사람의 입에서 나오든 불행한 말입니다.하지만 하나님은 당신의 능력으로 이 말을 지워버립니다.

가장 큰 ‘끝났어’가 뭡니까? 죽음 아닙니까? 하지만 하나님은 죽음까지도 지워버리십니다.  세상의 특기는 죽임지만 하나님의 특기는 살림입니다. 세상은 죽일수는 있어도 살릴 수는 없습니다.

로마의 특기가 뭐였습니까? 죽이는 것 아니었습니까? 죽이고 또 죽이고, 살기 위해서 죽이고, 승리하기 위해서 죽이고. 로마가 강하다고 하지만 기껏해야 죽이는 힘 밖에 없었습니다.

그래서  바울이 외치는 것입니다.  ‘너희들이 강하다고 하는데 그 힘으로 죽이는 거 아니냐? 너희들의 강함의 증거는 전장의 시체 아니냐? 너희들 죽은 사람 하나라도 살릴 수 있어. 어떤게 진짜 능력이냐? 나는 사람을 살리는 이 복음이 자랑스럽다’.

하나님의 특기는 ‘살림’입니다. 죽인자도 살리고, 넘어진 자도 살리고, 하나님은 살리고 싶어 하십니다.’나는 부활이요 생명이니, 나를 믿는 사람은 죽어도 살고, 살아서 나를 믿는 사람은 영원히 죽지 아니할 것이다. 네가 이것을 믿느냐?”(요11:25~26)

세상이 아무리 거대해 보여도, 우리가 아무리 초라해 보여도, 부활의 하나님이 우리와 함께하시기에 우리는 넘어지지 않습니다.

봄이 왔습니다. 세상 만물을 살려내시는 하나님을 바라보며, 움츠렸던 신앙과 마음을 다시 일으켜 세웁시다. 우리에게는 하나님이 들려주시는 승리의 복음이 있습니다. 하나님의 놀라운 구원이 있습니다. 끝났어를 끝내시는 하나님의 능력이 있습니다.

초라함에서 일어나십시오. 우월감에서 내려와 감사의 삶을 살아가십시오. 우리의 자랑은 오직 하나님뿐입니다. 하나님의 은혜와 사랑이 주는 힘으로 세상을 위로하고, 치유하는 하나님의 백성이 되기를 바랍니다.

Romans 8: The Glorious Gospel (Romans 1:16-17)

Last week, we talked about being ashamed of the gospel. Today, we will discuss being proud of the gospel. Paul declares in Romans 1:16, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” This means that the gospel is something to take pride in. The power of Rome was great, and the influence of the world was overwhelming, but Paul was still proud of the gospel. You, too, should not be ashamed of this gospel but consider it a source of pride. This was not only a confession needed by the believers of Rome but also a declaration for all of us today.

1. Shame and Pride

Shame and pride are emotions that cannot be taken lightly. Shame comes from feeling inferior, while pride arises from a sense of superiority. Both stem from comparison. The moment we compare ourselves to others, our emotions become unstable. When we feel inadequate, we become discouraged, resentful, and self-critical. When we feel superior, we become arrogant and boastful. These two emotions inevitably clash, creating conflict.

Comparison leads to an endless cycle of competition. Those who feel inferior look at those who boast and fall into helplessness and jealousy. “Why am I so lacking?” they wonder, as this thought burdens their hearts. Meanwhile, those who feel superior become arrogant, elevate themselves, and look down on others. Eventually, the inferior become resentful, and the proud use their achievements to diminish others. This emotional struggle divides society, destroys families, and even corrupts faith.

Therefore, we must ask ourselves, “What am I ashamed of? What am I proud of?” We must examine whether our pride is worldly pride or the pride of faith.

2. The Attitude of a Believer

We are called to guide those who wander between shame and pride. When feelings of inferiority overwhelm us, we must remember that we are beloved children of God. When our sense of superiority turns into arrogance, we must remember that everything we have is by God’s grace.

The Bible distinguishes between worldly pride and spiritual pride. Jeremiah 9:23 states, “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches.” Such boasting is fleeting, empty, and ultimately leads to conflict. Proverbs 27:2 advises, “Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.” True wisdom lies in refraining from self-praise. 1 Corinthians 1:31 commands, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” Our pride should not be centered on ourselves but on the Lord.

When we boast about ourselves, we hurt others, but when we boast about God, the weak are encouraged (Psalm 34:2). Therefore, we must ask again, “What am I boasting about?”

3. The Believer’s Pride

(1) The Gospel

Our only true source of pride is the gospel. Whether we feel inferior or superior, the gospel is the one thing that saves us all. We must take pride in the gospel, salvation, and the power of God.

What is the gospel? The gospel is the story of God shaking the world. He chooses the foolish to shame the wise and the weak to shame the strong. The gospel breaks the world’s systems of discrimination and oppression and declares that both the weak and the strong are equally loved children of God.

Is it not strange not to be proud of this gospel? The world’s values divide people and force them into constant comparison, but God proclaims, “You are my beloved child.” The gospel is the grace of God that transcends worldly shame and superiority.

(2) Salvation

What is salvation? Salvation is God rescuing all people without discrimination. Simply put, it is God’s hand transforming discarded wastepaper into a masterpiece. Though we are torn and crumpled by sin, God makes us into works of art. He restores the broken and humbles the proud to shape them into His masterpiece.

(3) The Power of God

Our third and greatest pride is the power of God. God, with His mighty power, creates new beginnings from what appears to be the end. When the world draws a line and says, “This is as far as you go,” God erases that line and says, “This is where we begin.”

What is the most painful phrase in life? “It’s over.” These are words of despair and destruction. But God, in His power, erases those words.

What is the ultimate “It’s over”? Death. But even death is erased by God. The world specializes in killing, but God specializes in giving life. The world can take life, but it cannot restore it.

What was Rome’s strength? The power to kill. Rome conquered by slaughtering its enemies. Victory was gained through destruction. But Paul cried out, “You claim to be strong, yet your strength lies in destruction! Is that true power? Can you bring the dead back to life? The true power lies in the gospel, which gives life.”

God specializes in life. He raises the dead, lifts up the fallen, and longs to bring restoration. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26).

No matter how great the world may seem, no matter how weak we may feel, we will not fall because the resurrected Lord is with us.

Spring has arrived. As God revives all creation, let us also restore our faith and our hearts. We have been given the victorious gospel. We have received God’s amazing salvation. We serve the God who puts an end to “It’s over.”

Rise from your feelings of inferiority. Step down from your pride and live a life of gratitude. Our only true pride is in God alone. May the power of His grace and love heal and comfort this world through us.
