부끄러운 복음 (로마서 1:16-17) 

1. 복음의 초석: 로마서 1:16-17

로마서 7번째 시간입니다. 오늘과 다음 주까지 다룰 16절과 17절은 로마서의 기둥과 같은 말씀입니다. 이 말씀은 복음의 핵심이 되어 신약 전체로 퍼져나갑니다.

마틴 루터는 “이 구절을 깨닫는 순간, 나는 다시 태어난 것 같았고, 천국의 문이 열린 것을 느꼈다”고 했으며, 칼뱅은 “이 말씀은 복음을 이해하는 열쇠이며, 인간의 의가 아니라 하나님의 의가 믿음을 통해 주어진다는 사실을 밝히는 핵심”이라고 했습니다.

이 두 구절은 신앙의 나침반과 같습니다. 복음이 없다면 신앙은 흔들리고, 방향을 잃으며, 영적으로 죽게 됩니다. 바울이 로마에 가고 싶어 한 이유도 여기에 있습니다. 그는 모든 사람에게 복음의 빚을 졌다고 고백하며, 이 복음이 구원의 능력과 하나님의 의를 담고 있음을 강조합니다.

복음이 자랑스러울 때 신앙이 강해지고, 흔들리지 않으며, 하나님의 능력이 나타납니다. 복음을 부끄러워하지 않을 때 신앙도 당당해집니다.

2. 부끄러운 복음

오늘날 신앙인들이 직면한 큰 문제 중 하나는 복음을 부끄러워하는 것입니다. 많은 이들이 복음을 드러내기보다 숨기고 있습니다.

(1) 로마 교회의 부끄러움

16절에서 바울은 “나는 복음을 부끄러워하지 않습니다”라고 선언합니다. 왜 굳이 이렇게 말했을까요? 이는 로마 교회 성도들 중 일부가 복음을 부끄러워하고 있었기 때문입니다.

로마는 철학과 문화의 중심이었고, 교회는 소수의 박해받는 공동체였습니다. 십자가에서 죽은 예수를 믿는다는 것이 세상 앞에서 조롱받을 수밖에 없었습니다.

(2) 우리의 부끄러움

오늘날도 마찬가지입니다. 현대 사회는 로마보다 더 거대하며, 신앙은 점점 개인적인 영역으로 축소되고 있습니다. 교회는 작아지고, 신앙은 비합리적인 것으로 여겨지며, 물질주의와 쾌락주의가 영적 가치를 조롱합니다.

이러한 환경 속에서 많은 성도들이 신앙을 숨깁니다. 그러나 바울은 우리에게 말합니다. “나는 복음을 부끄러워하지 않습니다!”

3. 부끄럽지 않은 복음의 능력

복음은 우리의 힘이 아니라 하나님의 능력입니다. 하나님의 능력이기에 어떤 세력도 복음을 이길 수 없습니다.

(1) 살아남는 것이 강한 것이다

강한 것이 살아남는 것이 아니라, 살아남는 것이 강한 것입니다. 골리앗은 강했지만 다윗이 승리했습니다(삼상 17:45). 예수님은 “천국은 겨자씨 한 알 같다”(마 13:31)고 하셨습니다. 겨자씨처럼 작아 보여도 자라면 큰 나무가 됩니다.

로마는 사라졌지만 복음은 여전히 살아 있습니다.

(2) 일시적 영광과 영원한 능력

세상의 영광은 잠시입니다. “모든 육체는 풀과 같고 그 모든 영광은 풀의 꽃과 같다. 풀은 마르고 꽃은 떨어지되 주님의 말씀은 영원히 있다”(벧전 1:24-25). 로마의 영광은 사라졌지만 복음은 영원합니다.

하나님은 세상의 미련한 것들을 택하여 강한 자들을 부끄럽게 하십니다(고전 1:27-29). 복음은 강할 때가 아니라 약할 때 더욱 강합니다(고후 12:10).

복음은 우리의 자랑이며 기쁨입니다. 십자가의 능력은 세상의 논리를 초월합니다. 세상의 크기와 비교할 것이 아닙니다. 하나님만이 이 세상을 구원하실 수 있습니다.

스데반은 돌에 맞으면서도 하늘을 보며 기도했고(행 7:59), 바울과 실라는 감옥에서 찬송했습니다(행 16:25). 그들은 복음의 능력을 알았습니다.

“나는 복음을 부끄러워하지 않습니다. 나는 복음이 자랑스럽습니다.” 이 바울의 외침이 오늘 우리의 고백이 되기를 바랍니다.

The Shame of the Gospel (Romans 1:16-17)

1. The Foundation of the Gospel: Romans 1:16-17

This is the seventh session on Romans. Today and next week, we will explore verses 16 and 17, which serve as the pillars of Romans. These verses contain the essence of the gospel that spreads throughout the entire New Testament.

Martin Luther once said, “The moment I understood this passage, I felt as if I had been reborn and that the gates of heaven had opened.” John Calvin stated, “These verses are the key to understanding the gospel, revealing that righteousness comes through faith, not human effort.”

These two verses are like a compass for faith. Without the gospel, faith is shaken, direction is lost, and spiritual death follows. This is why Paul longed to go to Rome—to share the gospel, which he considered his debt to all people. The gospel contains the power of salvation and the righteousness of God.

When the gospel becomes our pride, our faith grows stronger, remains unshaken, and God’s power is revealed. When we are not ashamed of the gospel, our faith stands firm.

2. The Shame of the Gospel

One of the greatest issues believers face today is being ashamed of the gospel. More and more people are hiding their faith rather than proclaiming it.

(1) The Shame in the Roman Church

In verse 16, Paul declares, “I am not ashamed of the gospel.” Why did he say this? Because some in the Roman church were ashamed of it.

Rome was the center of philosophy and culture, while the church was a small, persecuted community. Believing in a crucified Savior seemed absurd in the eyes of the world.

(2) Our Shame

Today, things are no different. The modern world is even greater and more overwhelming than ancient Rome. Faith is being reduced to a personal matter, and secular society increasingly marginalizes religion.

Many believers hide their faith. But Paul tells us, “I am not ashamed of the gospel!”

3. The Power of the Unashamed Gospel

The gospel is not our power but God’s power. Because it is God’s power, no force can overcome it.

(1) Survival is Strength

It is not the strong who survive, but the survivors who are strong. Goliath was strong, but David triumphed (1 Samuel 17:45). Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed” (Matthew 13:31). Though small, it grows into a great tree.

The Roman Empire has vanished, but the gospel remains.

(2) Temporary Glory vs. Eternal Power

The world’s glory is fleeting. “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field… but the word of the Lord endures forever” (1 Peter 1:24-25). Rome’s glory faded, but the gospel remains forever.

The cross, which seemed like failure, is actually victory. Only the gospel can save this world.

“I am not ashamed of the gospel. I am proud of the gospel.” May Paul’s bold proclamation be our confession today.
