로마서 1: ‘그 사랑, 그 자비 아침마다 새롭게'(롬1:1~7)

1.새해 소망

새해 첫 주일입니다. 귀한 주일과 예배를 허락하신 주님께 마음다한 감사를 드리면서 말씀을 전하겠습니다. 오늘 말씀의 제목은 ‘그 사랑, 그 자비 아침마다 새롭게’입니다. 예레미야애가 3장에 나오는 말씀입니다. ‘그 사랑, 그 자비 아침마다 새롭고 그 신실하심 그지 없어라'(애3:23, 공동) 재난 가운데서 애가哀歌를 부르고 있는 선지자의 마음과 입에서 나온 기적같은 찬가讚歌입니다.

힘든 가운데 있지만 생각해 보니 그 사랑, 그 자비 아침마다 있었고, 주의 성실하심과 신실하심이 그지 없이 크다는 것이 마음 한켠에서 올라오기 시작한 것입니다. ‘그 사랑, 그 자비 아침마다 새롭네요. 알겠습니다. 무너지지 않겠습니다’ 올 한 해, 우리의 아침도 이와같은 고백이 넘쳐나는 감사와 기적의 아침이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

오늘은 ‘아침마다 새롭게 되는 은혜’를 어떻게 누릴 수 있는지, 로마서를 시작하는 바울의 모습에서 찾아보려고 합니다. 오늘부터 로마서가 시작되는데, 로마서의 말씀을 통해 승리의 찬가가 울려 퍼지기를 기대하겠습니다

2.예수의 종으로 사는 삶

(1) 바울의 자기 소개와 삶

로마서는 바울이  로마에 있는 성도들에게 쓴 편지입니다. 바울은 그때까지 한번도 로마에 간적이 없고, 로마에 있는 성도들을 본 적도 없습니다. 그럼에도 편지를 쓴 것은 이제, 바울이 스페인 선교를 준비하고 있는데, 그 후원을 요청하기 위해 편지를 쓰게 된 것입니다.

자신이 누구인지, 어떤 목적을 가지고 있는지, 어떤 복음을 전할 것인지를 정리해서 보내게 됩니다. ‘자기 소개’로 시작합니다. ‘저 이런 사람입니다’. 명함 한장 건네고 있는데, 명함이 소박합니다. 1절을 원문 순서 그대로 읽어 보겠습니다.  ‘바울입니다. 그리스도 예수님이 부리시는 종입니다. 사도로 부르심을 받아 하나님의 복음을 위해서 따로 구별된 사람입니다’

자신은 주님이 부리시는 종, 복음을 전하는 사도, 복음을 위해 구별된 자라는 것입니다. 남부럽지 않은 스펙(가문, 학력, 사회적 배경)을 가졌지만 다 빼고 한 줄입니다. ‘나는 주님의 종, 주님의 사도, 주님이 선택한 사람’입니다. 자신의 실제 삶이 베어있는 소개입니다.

소개를 보면 바울이 어떻게 살고 있는지 알 수 있습니다. 예수의 종이라 했으니 예수님의 뜻에 따라 살았을 것이고, 복음을 전하는 사도라 했으니 기쁜 소식을 전하는 자로 살지 않았을것입니다.

순교 직전에 쓴 바울의 고백을 들어보면 이런 소개가 단순한 수사가 아니라 실제로 그렇게 살았다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 딤후4:7. ‘나는 선한 싸움을 다 싸우고 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰습니다'(새번역). 행20:24에도 동일한 고백이 나옵니다. ‘내가 나의 달려갈 길을 다 달리고, 주 예수께 받은 사명, 곧 하나님의 은혜의 복음을 증언하는 일을 다 하기만 하면, 나는 내 목숨이 조금도 아깝지 않습니다'(새번역)

이런 열정과 헌신이 어디서 나왔을까요? 자신의 입으로 말해 줍니다. ‘나는 예수의 종이다. 나는 주의 복음을 전하는 사도다. 나는 하나님의 구별된 사람이다'(롬1:1). 이런 자기 인식이 바울을 마지막 순간까지 달려가게 한 힘이고, 아침마다 주의 자비와 사랑으로 가득차게 만든 비밀이라고 할 수 있습니다. 이런 아침을 맞으려면 이같은 열정과 소명이 필요합니다.

나이들수록 아침이 즐겁지 않다는 말을 많이 합니다. 어떤 아침을 맞고 싶으십니까? 저는 봄날에 피어나는 파란 새싹 같은 아침을 매일 맞고 싶습니다. 뜨는 해를 보면서 주의 사랑과 자비가 훅하고 들어와 선물 같은 하루를 힘차게 살고 싶습니다. 소일거리 찾으면서 어슬렁 거리지 않고 해야 할 일, 마음에 품고 할 수 있을 때까지 열심히 하고 싶습니다.

어떻게해 해야할지 바울이 힌트를 줍니다. ‘예수의 종으로 살고, 복음(기쁜 소식)을 아는 자로 살고, 구별된 하나님의 사람’으로 살면  아침뿐만 아니라 하루가, 한달이, 2025년도 한 해가 새로워 질 것입니다.

특별히 바울이 고백한 ‘예수의 종’이라는 자기 인식 속에 비밀이 숨어 있습니다. 언뜻 이해가 안가겠지만 아침마다 새로운 복된 삶은 ‘예수의 종’으로 살 때 선물처럼 오게 됩니다.

(2) ‘종’의 의미

‘나는 예수의 종이다’. ‘종’이라는 말이 시대 착오적이고, 거부감을 주지만 ‘종됨’은 피해 갈 수 없는 인간의 조건입니다.  사람은 누군가의 또는 무엇인가의 종이 되어 살아갑니다. 피조물의 한계, 피조물의 특징입니다.

종은 우리 시대의 말로하면 ‘추종자’라고 할 수 있습니다. ‘지지자’도 될 수 있습니다. ‘묶인자’, ‘중독자’, ‘사로 잡힌 자’, ‘매여 있는 자’. 다 비슷한 말입니다. ‘매여있는 것’을 부정하고 싶지만 좋은 매임이든, 나쁜 매임이든 매여 있는 것은 사실입니다.예수의 종도 그 중 하나입니다.  예수의 종은 예수의 추종자, 예수에 묶인자, 예수에 매인자입니다.

사람은 무엇인가에 매여있는 ‘종’입니다.  매여있기에 맨자가 있고, 주인이 있습니다. 돈에 매여 있으면 돈이 주인입니다. 술에 매여있으면 술의 종입니다. 권력에 매여있으면 권력의 종, 두려움이 주인이면 두려움의 종, 이념에 묶여 있으면 이념의 종, 감정이 주인이면 감정의 종이 됩니다. 예수에 매여 있으면 예수의 종이고, 주인이 예수님입니다.

돈에 매여 있으면 돈이 주인입니다. 술에 매여있으면 술의 종입니다. 권력에 매여있으면 권력의 종, 두려움이 주인이면 두려움의 종, 이념에 묶여 있으면 이념의 종, 감정이 주인이면 감정의 종이 됩니다

어떤 주인을 고르시겠습니까? 고심하지 말고 예수님을 주인으로 고르세요. 어떤 것과 비교 할 수 없는 최고의 주인이고, 예수의 종이 되는 것이 최고입니다. 예수를 주인으로 삼고, 예수의 종이 되는 것은 삶의 질과 삶의 결과를 놓고 볼 때 다를 수 밖에 없습니다.

어떻게 다른지, 보기 좋게 표로 정리해 왔으니까 보시기 바랍니다. 결과를 보면 상극입니다. 편견이라 말해도 할 수 없습니다.

예수의 종들이 주인인 예수에게서 받는 것은 엄청난 자유입니다. 예수에 매일수록 자유가 임합니다.  세상 평가와 시선에서, 두려움에서, 죽음에서..실패에서 모든 것에서 자유롭습니다. 하지만 세상의 종이 되면, 권력이든 욕망이든 물질이든 이념이든 매일수록 억압 당합니다. 실패가 두렵고, 배신이 두렵고, 성공해도 아슬아슬합니다.

하지만 예수의 종은 고생해도 즐겁습니다. 삶의 방향이 분명합니다. 공허하고, 허무하지 않습니다. 사랑하려고 하고, 원수도 친구로 만들려고 애씁니다. 세상 종은 싸울 때가 많습니다. 싸우다가 단절됩니다. 형제도, 친구도 멀어집니다. 어디서 치고 들어올지, 누가 치고 들어올지 몰라 안심이 안됩니다. 예수의 종은 멀리 봅니다. 영원까지 뻗어나갑니다. 하지만 세상의 주인들은 시간도, 시각도, 시야도 좁고 협소합니다.

(3) 예수의 종

정리하면 예수의 종에게는 자유가 있고, 세상의 종에게는 ‘억압’과 ‘구속’이 있습니다. 예수의 종은 매일수록 좋고, 세상의 종은 매일수록 힘들어집니다. 바울이 ‘예수의 종’이라는 단어를 자랑스럽게 쓴 이유가 있지 않았을까요?

예수의 종으로 살 때 주인되신 예수에게서 받는 것을 바울은 7절에서 은혜와 평강, 두 단어로 말합니다. 예수의 종으로 살 때 받게 되는 축복입니다. 예수의 종으로 사는 자들이 아침마다 새로워 질 수 있는 비밀이고, 비결입니다.

다른 주인들은 아침을 깨버립니다. 근심하게 하고, 불안하게 많들 때가 태반입니다. 하지만 나의 주, 나의 그리스도는 은혜와 평강을 주셔서 아침을 살려내고, 하루를 살려내고, 허무한 인생을 이기게 하사 끝까지 달려가게 만드십니다.

살아갈 때 은혜와 평강만큼 귀한게 어디에 있습니까? 세상은 사막이고, 세상은 풍랑이는 바다입니다. 사막에는 물이 필요하고, 풍랑이는 바다에는 잔잔함이 필요합니다.

은혜는 물 한모금 없는 사막 한 가운데서 우리 ‘주인’께서  힘내라고 주시는 생명의 물입니다. 생수의 강이신 예수는 당신의 종들에게 이 물을 주십니다. 이 물 먹고 살아내라. 성령을 부어 주시고, 생명의 말씀을 주십니다. 은혜입니다. 이 은혜가 풍랑 한 복판에서도 흔들리지 않는 담대한 평안과 평화를 만들어 냅니다.

종으로 살거면 예수의 종으로 사는 게 최고 입니다. 예수의 종이 가지는 세상과 다른 역설적 축복, 더 깊게 누려 보시기 바랍니다.

물론 ‘종’이라는 이름만으로 되는 것은 아닙니다.  ‘종’이기에  해야 할 ‘마땅한’ 일을 해야 합니다. 해야 할 일이 무엇이겠습니까?

① 주인 말 잘 듣는 것이 가장 먼저 할 일입니다. 잘 듣고, 들은 대로 행하고. 종이 해야 할 본분입니다. 종인데 안 듣는다. 듣고도 안한다. 주인을 무시하는 것이고, 모독하는 것입니다. 종의 자격은 주인의 말을 듣는데 있습니다.

‘말씀 하옵소서, 주의 종이 듣겠나이다'(삼상3:10). 예수의 종은 예수의 말을 듣는 자입니다. 예수님이 생명의 주인이시기에 예수님의 말에는 생명이 있고, 목적이 있고, 평안이 있고, 위로가 있고, 경고가 있습니다. 마음 열고 들으면 아침이 새로워지고, 하루가 세워지고, 끝까지 달려갈 힘이 나옵니다.

② 예수의 종은 주인과 친밀하고 좋은 관계를 유지해야 하는데, 좋은 관계는 주인의 말을 잘 들으면 생깁니다.  귀 기울여 듣고 하라는 대로 하면 어떤 주인인들 안좋아하겠습니까? 관계가 깊어지고, 주인이 기분 좋아서 떡 하나라도 더 주지 않을까요? 힘도 주고, 필요하면 돈도 주고, 일도 주고. 기분도 좋아지고, 기분 좋아지니 넉넉해 지고, 넉넉해 지니 사랑도 꽃피고.

여기서 역경을 이기는 힘이 나옵니다. 바울이 다메섹 도상에서 주인 예수를 만난 이후, 하루라도 편한 날이 있었을지 모르겠습니다. 매일이 힘든 날이었을 것입니다. 죽을 고비도 숱하게  넘겼고, 가는 곳마다 많이 맞았습니다.

사십에서 하나 감한 매를 5번이나 맞았습니다. 40을 넘기지 않는 이유는 40이 넘으면 죽을 수 있기에 39번에서 멈춘 것인데, 이런 무자비한 매질을 5번이나 맞은 것입니다. 바울의 몸을 볼수만 있다면 흉터가 엄창 났을 것입니다.

그런데도 바울은 꺾이지 않습니다. ‘누가 우리를 그리스도의 사랑에서 끊으리요'(롬8:35). 예수의 종이 아침마다 주인 예수님에게서 받은 사랑과 자비가 준 능력이었을 것입니다. 어떤 주인이 이런 능력을 주겠습니까?

예레미야도, 바울도, 우리도 예수님만이 날마다 새롭게하고, 끝까지 달려갈 힘을 주십니다. 예수의 종이 되는 것, 나쁘지 않습니다. 자랑할만 합니다.

다른 종은 되지 마십시다. 예수만 주인으로 삼고 따라 가십시다. 주인 되신 주님께서 은혜와 평강과 , 사랑으로 팍팍 밀어 주실 것입니다. 새해 아침입니다. 예수의 종으로 살아가는 여러분에게 큰 영광과 보람과 명예와 축복이 있기를 축복하고 축원 드립니다.

‘His Love, His Mercy Renewed Every Morning’ (Romans 1:1-7)

1. New Year’s Hope

It is the first Sunday of the new year. I give heartfelt thanks to the Lord for granting us this precious Sunday and this beautiful worship as I deliver today’s message. The title of today’s message is “His Love, His Mercy Renewed Every Morning.” This is a phrase from Lamentations 3: “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lam. 3:22-23). This miraculous hymn was uttered by the prophet even as he sang a lament in the midst of disaster.

Even though he was in a difficult situation, upon reflection, he realized that the Lord’s love and mercy were there every morning and that His faithfulness was exceedingly great. This realization began to rise in his heart. “Your love and mercy are new every morning. I understand now. I will not fall.” My hope is that this year, each morning will be filled with such confessions of gratitude and miracles for all of us.

Today, we will explore how to experience “the grace that is renewed every morning” by looking at the Apostle Paul as he begins his letter to the Romans. From today, we start with the book of Romans, and I hope that this message will resonate with the victorious hymn that reverberates through this epistle.

2. A Life Lived as a Servant of Jesus

(1) Paul’s Self-Introduction and Life

Romans is a letter Paul wrote to the saints in Rome. Up until that point, Paul had never been to Rome, nor had he met the believers there. Nevertheless, he wrote this letter because he was preparing for his missionary journey to Spain and sought support for this endeavor.

In this letter, Paul introduces himself: who he is, the purpose he has, and the Gospel he preaches. It begins with a “self-introduction.” “This is who I am.” It’s as if he is handing over his business card, but his business card is modest. Let’s read verse 1 as it appears in the original order: “Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, and set apart for the gospel of God.”

Paul identifies himself as a servant of Christ Jesus, an apostle called to preach the gospel, and someone set apart for the gospel of God. Despite having enviable credentials—his lineage, education, and social background—he strips all of that away and presents himself in one simple line: “I am the Lord’s servant, His apostle, and the one chosen by Him.” This reflects Paul’s actual life.

Through this introduction, we can see how Paul lived. Since he called himself a servant of Jesus, he must have lived according to Jesus’ will. As an apostle preaching the gospel, he would have lived as a bearer of good news.

Paul’s confession shortly before his martyrdom shows that this introduction was not just rhetoric but an accurate reflection of his life. In 2 Timothy 4:7, he says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Similarly, in Acts 20:24, he states, “I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

Where did such passion and dedication come from? Paul explains it himself: “I am a servant of Jesus. I am an apostle for His gospel. I am set apart for God” (Rom. 1:1). This self-awareness was the driving force that kept Paul running until the end, and it is the secret to living each morning filled with the Lord’s love and mercy.

To greet such mornings, we need this kind of passion and calling.

As people age, they often say mornings lose their charm. What kind of morning do you wish to wake up to? I want to wake up to mornings like the sprouting green shoots of spring, full of life and energy. I want to watch the rising sun and feel the Lord’s love and mercy rush in, giving me a gift-like day to live fully. I don’t want to idle away, looking for small tasks to occupy myself. Instead, I want to embrace meaningful work and give my all while I can.

Paul gives us a hint about how to do this. “Live as a servant of Jesus, as one who knows the gospel (the good news), and as someone set apart for God.” Not only will your mornings, but your days, months, and the year 2025 will be renewed.

Particularly, there is a hidden secret in Paul’s confession, “I am a servant of Jesus.” At first glance, it may seem difficult to understand, but the blessed life renewed every morning comes as a gift when we live as servants of Jesus.

(2) The Meaning of a ‘Servant’

“I am a servant of Jesus.” While the term “servant” may seem outdated or evoke discomfort, servanthood is an inescapable human condition. Humans are creatures bound to someone or something, a characteristic and limitation of being created beings.

A servant, in modern terms, could be called a “follower” or a “supporter.” It might also mean “bound one,” “addict,” “captive,” or “one who is tied.” These terms all convey similar meanings. While we might want to deny the idea of being bound, whether it is a good or bad attachment, the truth remains that we are bound. Being a servant of Jesus is one of these attachments. A servant of Jesus is a follower of Jesus, one tied to Him, one bound to Him.

People are servants of something. Being bound means having a master. If you are bound to money, money is your master. If you are bound to alcohol, you are a servant of alcohol. If you are bound to power, you are a servant of power. If fear is your master, you are a servant of fear. If you are tied to ideology, you are a servant of ideology. If emotions are your master, you are a servant of emotions. If you are bound to Jesus, you are His servant, and He is your master.

Who will you choose as your master? Don’t hesitate—choose Jesus. He is the best master, incomparable to any other. Becoming a servant of Jesus is the highest calling.

Living as a servant of Jesus and making Him your master inevitably changes the quality and outcome of life. How is it different? I have prepared a table to show you, so take a look. The contrast is stark. Call it biased if you will, but the differences are undeniable.

(3) Servants of Jesus

To summarize, being a servant of Jesus brings freedom, while being a servant of the world brings oppression and bondage. The more you are bound to Jesus, the freer you become. Freedom from worldly evaluations and judgments, from fear, from death… from failure—freedom from everything. However, being bound to the world—be it power, desire, material wealth, or ideology—leads to increasing oppression. You fear failure, betrayal, and even success feels precarious.

As servants of Jesus, even hardships are joyful. Life has a clear direction. It is neither empty nor meaningless. You strive to love and try to turn enemies into friends. Servants of the world, however, often end up in conflicts. They sever relationships, even with family and friends. They live in constant anxiety, unsure of where the next attack will come from.

Servants of Jesus have a long-term perspective that extends into eternity. The world’s masters, on the other hand, have narrow and limited horizons.

To conclude, being a servant of Jesus brings freedom, and being a servant of the world brings oppression and bondage. The more you are bound to Jesus, the better it is for you. Isn’t this why Paul proudly called himself a “servant of Jesus”?

When you live as a servant of Jesus, the blessings you receive from your master Jesus are summed up in two words: grace and peace. These are the blessings received by those who live as servants of Jesus. This is the secret and the key to a life renewed every morning.

Other masters ruin your mornings. They fill you with worries and anxieties. But our Lord and Christ, by giving grace and peace, revive your mornings, your days, and your weary life, enabling you to press on until the end.

What is more precious in life than grace and peace? The world is a desert; it is a stormy sea. In the desert, you need water, and in a stormy sea, you need calm.

Grace is like the living water the master gives to encourage you in the midst of a desert. Jesus, the river of living water, gives this water to His servants. “Drink this water and live.” He pours out the Holy Spirit and grants the Word of life. This is grace. This grace produces the bold peace and tranquility that remains unshaken even in the midst of a storm.

If you must be a servant, being a servant of Jesus is the best. Live fully in the paradoxical blessings that servants of Jesus enjoy, blessings unlike anything in the world.

Servanthood, however, is not about the title alone. As servants, there are “duties” we must fulfill. What are these duties?

① Listen to the Master. Listening well and acting accordingly is the primary duty of a servant. If a servant does not listen, or listens but does not act, it is tantamount to disregarding and dishonoring the master. The qualification of a servant lies in hearing the master’s words.

“Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Sam. 3:10). A servant of Jesus listens to His words. Since Jesus is the Lord of life, His words carry life, purpose, peace, comfort, and warning. When you open your heart to listen, your morning is renewed, your day is built up, and you gain the strength to keep running to the end.

② Maintain a close relationship with the Master. A good relationship arises when the servant listens well to the master. When you listen attentively and act accordingly, which master wouldn’t be pleased? The relationship deepens, and the master, in a good mood, might give you even more—strength, provision, work to do, joy, and abundance. This leads to blossoming love and overflowing generosity.

③ This is where the strength to overcome adversity is born. After meeting Jesus, his master, on the road to Damascus, Paul likely did not have a single easy day. Every day must have been challenging. He survived countless life-threatening situations and suffered frequent beatings.

He received “forty lashes minus one” five times. They stopped at 39 lashes because 40 was considered fatal. Paul endured such merciless beatings five times. If we could see his body, it would surely be covered in scars.

Yet Paul remained unbroken. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Rom. 8:35). The love and mercy Paul received from his master Jesus each morning gave him the strength to overcome. What other master could bestow such power?

Like Jeremiah, Paul, and us, only Jesus renews us daily and gives us the strength to keep running. Becoming a servant of Jesus is not a bad choice; it’s something to be proud of.

Let us not become servants of anything else. Let us follow Jesus alone as our master. Our master, the Lord, will bless us abundantly with grace, peace, and love.

It is the morning of a new year. May all of you who live as servants of Jesus be filled with great glory, purpose, honor, and blessings. I bless and pray for this.
