무엇을 보느냐?(렘1:11~19).

뜻 깊은 시간, 주시는 말씀을 받도록 하겠습니다.

1.두 환상.

예레미야 선지자의 소명기를 읽었습니다. 예레미야 선지자는 남유다가 멸망하는 시기에 부름받은 선지자입니다. 가장 힘든 때, 가장 하기 힘든 역할을 하는 자로 하나님이 세운 사람입니다.

인간적으로 얼마나 부담이 되겠습니까? 망설일 수 밖에 없었겠지요. 망설이는 예레미야를 하나님은 계속 격려하십니다. ‘내가 함께 한다. 두려워하지 마라'(1:1~10). 그리고 밧모섬의 요한처럼 영적인 환상을 보여 주십니다. 오늘 우리가 읽은 부분입니다.

두 번의 환상이 두 번의 질문을 통해 보여집니다. 11절. ‘무엇을 보느냐?’, 13절. ‘무엇을 보느냐?’. 보여 주시고 있는 것에 대한 확인입니다.

무엇을 봅니까? 살구나무 가지를 보고, 북쪽으로 기울어진 끓는 가마를 봅니다. 살구나무 가지는 하나님이 말씀한대로 지킨다는 것을 확인하는 상징이고, 북쪽으로 기울어진 끓는 가마는 북쪽으로 부터 하나님의 심판이 임한다고 하는 경고의 상징입니다. 보여줌을 통해 망설이는 예레미야에게 하나님이 확신을 주고, 힘을 주고 있습니다.

2.보여주심과 봄

하나님은 언제나 보여 주십니다. 말씀으로, 환상으로, 꿈으로, 생각으로 보여주십니다. 보여 주시면서 당신의 뜻을 알려주십니다. ‘내 길을 알라. 내 길을 따르라’. 보여 주실 때 해야 할 일은 보여주시는 하나님을 신뢰하면서 보여주신 뜻에 순종하며 따라 가는 것입니다.

보여 주심에 대한 가장 좋은 구도는 ‘보여 주시는 하나님’, ‘보는 우리’ 입니다. 보여주시는 데 보지 못하는 구도가 되면 보지 못한 댓가와 책임을 질 수 밖에 없습니다. 보여 주실 때 믿음을 가지고 볼 수 있어야 합니다. 신앙의 삶을 사는 이들이 잘 봐야 할 게 있습니다. 특별히 시간의 분기점 앞에 설 때 꼭 봐야 할 게 있습니다.

봐야 할 것은 시간의 흐름입니다. 과거, 현재, 미래를 잘 봐야 합니다. 과거는 내 삶의 보물 창고입니다. 과거 안에 내가 모여 있습니다. 잘하는 나, 못하는 나, 부끄러운 나, 괜찮은 나. 어디서도 얻을 수 없는 나만의 값진 보물이 들어 있습니다.

현재는 과거가 만든 자리입니다. 좋을 수도 있고, 힘들 수도 있지만 모든 삶의 상황을 인정하고 최선을 다해야 하는 거룩하고 구별된 사간입니다. 불안한 미래와 후회스러운 과거에 끼여서 희생 당하면 안됩니다.

미래는 과거와 현재를 살아온 내가 만들기를 원하는 어떤 그림, 꿈입니다. 이 꿈을 보면서 미래가 현재로 들어와 살아갈 힘을 주게 됩니다. 특별히 그리스도인들은 시간의 흐름을 하나님 안에서 볼 수 있어야 합니다.

3.신자가 봐야 할 것

(1) 과거에서 봐야 할 것

신자는 지나온 삶의 자리, 과거에서 오늘 본문으로 말하면 나의 ‘살구나무’를 봐야 합니다. 예레미야가 본 살구나무는 하나님이 지켜 주신다는 사인입니다.

신자가 지난 날을 보면서 가장 많이 보고, 가장 많은 시간을 투자해야 하는 것은 하나님이 베풀어 주신 은혜, 하나님의 지켜 주심을 보는 것입니다. 실패하고, 부끄러운 모습보다 훨씬 많이 봐야 합니다.

그래야 과거가 죽지 않고 살아납니다. ‘하나님이 함께 하사 여기까지 왔습니다. 하나님이 인도하셨습니다. 송축합니다. 그 은혜를 잊지 않겠습니다. 더 잘 살겠습니다’.

(2) 현재에 봐야 할 것.

하나님의 사람들이 현재에 봐야 할 것은 하나님의 함께 하심, 하나님의 동행하심을 보는 것이 중요합니다. 어려움이 없는 현재는 없기에 현재는 누구나 흔들립니다.

13절에 나오는 끓는 가마는 우리에게도 보이는 현실입니다. 끊는 가마는 그들에게 임할 재앙과 심판입니다. 흔들리고 있는 현재입니다.

어떻게  해야 합니까? 도망갈까요? 어디로요? 공포에 눌릴까요? 힘들기만 합니다. 하나님의 사람들이 현재에 봐야 하는 최고의 것은 ‘하나님의 함께 하심’ 입니다.

‘내가 여호와를 항상 내 앞에 모심이여 그가 나의 오른쪽에 계시므로 내가 흔들리지 아니하리로다'(시16:8)

‘사람이 감당할 시험 밖에는 너희가 당한 것이 없나니 오직 하나님은 미쁘사 너희가 감당하지 못한 시험 당함을 허락하지 아니하시고 시험 당할 즈음에 또한 피할 길을 내사 너희로 능히 감당하게 하시느니라'(고전10:13). 이 두 말씀이 여러분의 현재를 밝히는 큰 빛이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

(3) 미래에 봐야 할 것.

이제 미래입니다. 미래는 확실하지 않는 시간이기에 가장 보기 어려운 시간입니다. 미래는 하나님의 손 안에 있기에 낙관도 비관도 우리가 할 일은 아닙니다.

오지 않는 미래 앞에 우리가 할 일은 오지 않은 미래에 대해 약속하신 하나님의 말씀을 신뢰하고, 바라보며 뚜벅뚜벅 걸어가는 것, 이게 우리가 해야 할 일이고, 사명입니다.

끓는 가마의 심판이라고 하는 미래를 말씀하시면서 하나님이 약속하시는 장면이 17절부터 나옵니다.

‘그러므로 너는 네 허리를 동이고 일어나 내가 네게 명령한 바를 다 그들에게 말하라 그들 때문에 두려워하지 말라 네가 그들 앞에서 두려움을 당하지 않게 하리라 보라 내가 오늘 너를 그 온 땅과 유다 왕들과 그 지도자들과 그 제사장들과 그 땅 백성 앞에 견고한 성읍, 쇠기둥, 놋성벽이 되게 하였은즉 그들이 너를 치나 너를 이기지 못하리니 이는 내가 너와 함께 하여 너를 구원할 것임이니라 여호와의 말이니라’(1:17~19)

‘내가 약속할테니 힘든 미래, 담대하게 맞이해라’. 상황은 다르지만 하나님이 우리에게 요구하시는 것도 다르지 않습니다. 신자에게 미래는 ‘하나님의 약속이 실현되는 성취의 때’ 입니다.

(4) 영원: 궁극의 시간

약속이 성취되는 미래가 우리를 어디로 인도합니까? 영원으로 인도합니다.  신자의 시간은 하나가 더 있습니다. ‘영원’은 하나님의 사람들에게 준 궁극의 시간, 선물과 같은 시간입니다.

영원은 우리를 살리는 시간입니다. 신자의 현재,과거, 미래의 치유가 ‘영원’에서 일어납니다. 신자의 인생이 허무하지 않았다는 것이 증명되고, 가장 복된 인생을 살았다는 것이 밝혀집니다. 악과 불의도 다 바로 잡힙니다. 궁극의 시간입니다. 대단한 시간입니다. 이 시간을 놓치면 안됩니다.

송년의 시간, 무엇을 보느냐?는 질문을 받았습니다. 대답하십시다. 과거에 베푸신 신실하신 하나님의 은혜 보겠습니다. 힘든 현재지만 동행하시는 하나님을 보겠습니다. 아슬아슬한 미래지만 하나님의 약속을 바라보면서 믿음으로 걸어가겠습니다. 우리에게 허락하신 ‘영원’의 아름다움 보면서 담대하게 살겠습니다. 이런 뜨거운 고백과 다짐으로 한 해를 보내고, 맞이하는 은혜가 있기를 바라겠습니다.

What Do You See? (Jeremiah 1:11–19)

Let us receive the Word God is giving us during this meaningful time.

1. Two Visions

We have read the call of the prophet Jeremiah. He was called during the time when the Southern Kingdom of Judah was collapsing. God chose him to play the difficult role of being His prophet during one of the most challenging times.

How burdensome must this have been from a human perspective? Naturally, Jeremiah hesitated. In response, God continued to encourage him, saying, “I am with you; do not be afraid” (Jer. 1:1–10). Then, like John on the island of Patmos, God showed Jeremiah spiritual visions. This is what we read today.

These two visions are revealed through two questions: verse 11, “What do you see?” and verse 13, “What do you see?” God confirms what He shows to Jeremiah.

What does Jeremiah see? He sees the branch of an almond tree and a boiling pot tilting away from the north. The almond branch symbolizes God’s faithfulness to fulfill His word. The boiling pot represents God’s warning of impending judgment from the north. Through these visions, God instills confidence and strength in the hesitant Jeremiah.

2. God’s Revelation and Our Seeing

God always reveals Himself. He speaks through His word, visions, dreams, and thoughts. Through these revelations, He reveals His will: “Know My way. Follow My path.” When God reveals something, our response must be to trust Him and obey the will He has shown.

The best framework for understanding this is “the God who reveals” and “we who see.” If God reveals but we fail to see, we will inevitably face the consequences and bear responsibility for our failure. When God reveals something, we must see it with faith.

For those who live a life of faith, there are crucial things to see—especially at turning points in life.

What must we see? We need to discern the flow of time: the past, present, and future. The past is a treasure trove of our lives. It holds all of us—the capable self, the failing self, the embarrassing self, and the decent self. It contains invaluable treasures that only belong to us.

The present is the place shaped by the past. It may be favorable or challenging, but it is a sacred and set-apart time in which we must do our best, fully acknowledging and accepting our circumstances. We must not let the present be sacrificed between a regrettable past and an uncertain future.

The future is the vision or dream we wish to create based on how we have lived in the past and present. Seeing this dream brings the future into the present, empowering us to live today. Especially as Christians, we must see the flow of time through the lens of God.

3. What Believers Must See

(1) What to See in the Past

Believers must look back at their past lives and see, as in today’s text, their “almond branch.” The almond branch that Jeremiah saw was a sign of God’s faithfulness.

When reflecting on the past, believers should focus most of their time and attention on the grace and protection God has provided. This should take precedence over failures or shameful moments.

Only then will the past come alive instead of remaining dead. “God was with me up to this point. He guided me. I bless His name. I will not forget His grace. I will live better because of it.”

(2) What to See in the Present

Believers must see God’s presence and companionship in the present. There is no present without difficulty; everyone experiences instability in the present.

The boiling pot mentioned in verse 13 is a reality for us, too. The boiling pot represents the disaster and judgment they were to face—a shaking reality.

What should we do? Should we run away? To where? Should we let fear consume us? That would only lead to more suffering. The most crucial thing believers must see in the present is “God’s presence with us.”

“I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken” (Ps. 16:8).

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (1 Cor. 10:13).

May these verses serve as a great light illuminating your present.

(3) What to See in the Future

Now, the future. The future is an uncertain time, making it the hardest to see. It is not for us to be overly optimistic or pessimistic about the future because it lies in God’s hands.

Our task concerning the future is to trust God’s promises, look toward them, and walk forward step by step. This is our duty and calling.

When God speaks of a boiling pot of judgment as the future, He also gives a promise starting in verse 17:

“But you, get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them. Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar, and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord (Jer. 1:17–19).

“I am promising you; face the difficult future boldly.” Although circumstances differ, what God requires of us remains the same. For believers, the future is the “time of fulfillment of God’s promises.”

(4) Eternity: The Ultimate Time

Where does the future, where God’s promises are fulfilled, lead us? It leads us to eternity. For believers, there is an additional time—eternity. “Eternity” is the ultimate time gifted to God’s people, a time like no other.

Eternity is the time that saves us. The healing of a believer’s past, present, and future takes place in eternity. It is where the believer’s life is proven not to have been in vain and is revealed as the most blessed life. All evil and injustice will also be set right. It is the ultimate time. It is a magnificent time. We must not miss it.

As we stand at the year’s end, we have been asked the question, “What do you see?” Let us answer it.

We see the faithfulness of God’s grace in the past. We see God’s companionship in our difficult present. We see God’s promises for an uncertain future and walk in faith. We see the beauty of eternity that God has granted us and live boldly.
