예수님의 질문2: 욕망과 그리스도(눅9:18~20)

1.주님을 깊이 알기.
주님께서 던지신 질문을 보고 있습니다. ‘너에게 나는 누구냐?’. 주님은 제자들에게도 묻고, 우리에게도 묻고 있습니다. 질문의 의도는 분명합니다. 주님을 더 깊이 알고 따르라고 하는 도전입니다.

주님은 기독교 신앙의 중심이고, 전부입니다. 주님을 알면 알수록 우리의 삶은 풍성해지고, 세상이 알지 못하는 복된 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 주님께서 자신을 알라고 하신 이유는 여러번 말씀하셨습니다.

① 요10:14 ‘나는 선한 목자이다. 나는 내 양들을 알고, 내 양들은 나를 안다’. 내가 잘 아니 너희도 잘 알고 따르라는 것입니다. 따라야 하는 주님은 목자처럼 인도하고, 보호하고 먹이는 존재입니다. 잘 알아야 합니다.

② 요15:5. ‘나는 포도나무요, 너희는 가지이다. 사람이 내 안에 머물러 있고, 내가 그 안에 머물러 있으면, 그는 많은 열매를 맺는다. 너희는 나를 떠나서는 아무것도 할 수 없다’. 주님께 붙어 있으라는 것입니다. 주님을 떠나면 우리의 영혼은 마르지만, 주님을 알아, 주님 안에 머물면 사랑, 기쁨, 인내 등의 열매를 맺게 됩니다.

③ 요14:6. ‘나는 길이요, 진리요, 생명이다’. 여기서 길은 ‘방식’입니다. 길인 내 ‘방식’을 따라와라. 주님의 방식은 군림이 아닙니다. 사랑, 겸손, 용서, 희생, 순종이 주님의 방식인데 그런 삶의 방식을 따라오라는 것입니다. 주님을 알아야 따를 수 있습니다.

④ 요15:15. ‘이제부터는 나는 너희를 친구라고 불렀다. 내가 아버지에게서 들은 모든 것을 너희에게 알려 주었기 때문이다’. 주님은 친구입니다. 보통 친구가 아니고 아버지의 비밀을 알려주는 천기누설급의 친구입니다. 주님을 모르면 손해입니다.

주님을 알지 못하고서는 신앙의 여정을 온전히 걸을 수 없습니다. 주님과 가까이 할 때 그분의 아름다움과 향기가 우리의 삶에 스며듭니다. 매연 가득한 곳에 있으면 매연이 몸속에 들어오고, 꽃 내음 가득한 곳에 있으면 꽃향기가 들어오는 것처럼, 주님과 가까이 할 때 주님의 향기가 우리 안에 가득해집니다.

그리스도인의 성은 세 가지입니다. 여성, 남성, 그리고 영성(spirituality)입니다. 영성은 ‘하나님-닮은-성’입니다. 하나님과 교제하고, 하나님을 경험한 사람에게 생긴 거룩한 특성이 영성입니다. 주님을 삶의 목자로 따라가고, 포도나무로 알아 늘 함께하는 사람에게 생긴 하늘의 고귀한 성입니다.

이 영성의 바탕이 주님입니다. 주님을 알고, 주님을 따르면 아름답고, 존귀한 영성의 사람이 됩니다. 주님 더 잘 알아 이런 영성 가질 수 있기를 바랍니다.

주님을 잘 알려면 어떻게 하면 되겠습니까? 주님을 알기 위해 가져야 할 두 가지 마음의 태도가 있습니다. 하나는 ‘욕망’이고, 다른 하나는 ‘금욕(절제)’입니다. 욕망은 주님을 알고자 하는 갈망이며, 금욕은 그 욕망을 유지하기 위한 습관과 훈련입니다.

2.주님을 욕망하기
먼저 욕망입니다. 욕망은 무엇인가를 간절히 바라는 마음입니다. 간절함이 욕망이 가진 힘입니다. 욕망은 양날의 검과 같습니다. 잘 다루면 약이 되지만, 잘못 다루면 독이 됩니다. 욕망은 길들이면 오아시스 처럼 풍성하지만, 길들이지 못하고, 사로잡히게 되면 신기루 처럼 다 사라져 버립니다.

교회에서는 욕망이 욕을 많이 먹지만 욕망 자체는 하나님이 주신 선물입니다. 욕망이 없다고 생각해 보십시오. 욕망이 없는 사람의 모습은 어떤 모습이겠습니까? 시들어서 축 늘어진 꽃 같고, 줄이 다 풀린 활 같을 것입니다. 선한 욕망, 악한 욕망 다 똑같습니다.

욕망이 있기에 최선을 다해 열심히 사는 것입니다. 욕망 때문에 죄도 짓고, 화도 내는것입니다. 욕망은 없으면 안됩니다. 없을 수도 없습니다. 없앨 수 없다면 어떻게 해야 합니까? 상처뿐인 욕망, 허무함만 남기는 욕망은 피하고 가져야 할 욕망을 가지는 게 맞습니다.

가져야 할 욕망은 사람마다 다르겠지만 그리스도인들이 가져야 할 공통의 욕망이 있습니다. 하나님을 욕망하는 것입니다. 좀 더 자세히 말하면 하나님의 욕망을 욕망하는 것입니다. 모든 그리스도인들이 가져야 하는 욕망, 갈망, 바람입니다.

하나님의 욕망을 욕망하는 이유는 하나님의 욕망이 선하고, 타락한 욕망으로 망가진 세상을 치유하는 욕망이기에 욕망하는 것입니다. 하나님의 욕망을 욕망하면 우리도 똑같은 욕망을 갖게 됩니다. 성경에 보면 성부, 성자, 성령 하나님의 욕망이 무수히 나옵니다.

(1)성부의 욕망
성부가 가진 욕망은 미가6:8에 잘 나옵니다. ‘사람아.. 여호와께서 네게 구하시는 것은 오직 정의를 행하며 인자를 사랑하며 겸손하게 네 하나님과 함께 행하는 것이 아니냐’

요3:16. 하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이라.

성부 하나님의 욕망은 세상을 사랑하여 독생자를 주셨고, 당신의 사람들이 정의를 행하고, 사람을 사랑하며 겸손히 하나님을 인정하며 살기를 원하십니다. 선한욕망이고, 우리가 가져야 할 욕망입니다.

(2)성자의 욕망
성자 예수님이 가진 욕망은 막14:36, 요13:34에 잘 나옵니다. 막14:36. 아버지여 아버지께는 모든 것이 가능하오니 이 잔을 내게서 옮기시옵소서 그러나 나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서.

요13:34. 새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라.

성자의 욕망은 당신의 사람들이 어떤 순간에도 아버지의 뜻을 다르고, 서로 사랑하며 사는 강한 바람, 욕망을 가지고 있습니다.

(3)성령의 욕망
성령 하나님도 욕망이 있습니다. 고후3:18 우리가 다 수건을 벗은 얼굴로 거울을 보는 것 같이 주의 영광을 보매 그와 같은 형상으로 변화하여 영광에서 영광에 이르니 곧 주의 영으로 말미암음이니라

성령의 욕망도 대단합니다. 성령은 우리를 주님의 형상, 하나님을-닮은자로 변화시키는 것을 욕망하십니다. 이처럼 삼위 하나님의 욕망을 알고 그 욕망에 우리의 욕망을 맞출 때 올바른 욕망을 가질 수 있습니다. 하나님을 모르면 별 수 없습니다. 자잘한 세상에서 욕망만 갖게 됩니다.

하나님을 알고자 하는 욕망은 굉장히 큰 욕망이고, 우리를 살리는 욕망입니다. 작은 욕망 때문에 큰 욕망을 놓치지 않아야 합니다.

3.주님을 위해 금욕하기.
큰 욕망을 놓치지 않기 위해 필요한 것이 ‘금욕’입니다. 선한 욕망이 있다고 욕망이 내것이 되지 않습니다. 내 것으로 만들어야 내 욕망이 되는데, 내것으로 만드는 수단이 금욕입니다.

금욕은 참는 것입니다. 하고 싶지만 하지 않고, 참고, 해야 할 것을 하는 게 금욕입니다. 환영받지 못하고 있지만 신앙의 삶에서는 있어야 하는 게 금욕이고, 절제입니다. 운동 선수들이 절제하는 것처럼 신자들도 절제하고, 훈련해야 합니다.

금욕은 가치있는 영적 훈련입니다. 금욕과 절제가 있을 때 더 깊은 믿음의 세계로 들어갈 수 있습니다. 세속의 욕망 한 복판에서 무엇인가를 절제하고, 금욕하는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 그럼에도 절제하고, 금욕하다보면 예레미야 선지자가 말한 일이 지금도 일어납니다.

‘너희가 온 마음으로 나를 구하면 나를 찾을 것이요, 나를 만나리라'(렘29:13)

만날 수 밖에 없는 이유는 금욕이 주는 선물 때문입니다. 영적으로 민감해 집니다.
하나님과의 관계가 깊어집니다. 자기를 부인하고 하나님을 주님을 알기 위해 금욕이 필요한 이유입니다. 금욕과 절제는 깊은 믿음의 세계로 인도합니다.

정원사가 가지치기 하듯 신앙의 삶을 방해하는 것들을 과감히 쳐내야 합니다. 처내야 할 가지가 없는 사람은 없습니다. 여러분들은 신앙 때문에 포기하고, 참고, 절제하는 게 얼마나 있으세요? 어떤 것을 금욕하면 좋을까요?

제가 몇가지 쳐내야 할 가지들, 보여 드릴테니까 점검해 보시기 바랍니다.

① 게으름의 금욕:
게으름은 신앙과 어울리지 않습니다. 부지런해야 영적인 활동을 할 수 있는데 게으름은 영적 성장과 영적인 훈련에 독입니다. 벗어나야 신앙의 삶도 회복할 수 있습니다.

② 유튜브의 금욕: 
유튜브가 대세입니다. 금욕이 필요한 영역입니다. 지배 당하지않게 해야 합니다.
절제하지 못하면 영적인 삶을 위한 시간을 다 잡아 먹습니다.

③ 형식적 신앙의 금욕: 
탈피해야 합니다. 형식적 신앙은 주님을 알아가는 데 분명히 방해가 됩니다. 의미와 진심이 없는 신앙으로는 주님을 알기 힘듭니다. 탈피해서 신앙에 진심이 되야 합니다.

④ 걱정, 불안, 후회의 금욕: 
중요한 금욕입니다. 걱정과 불안과 후회는 주님께 집중하지 못하게 만듭니다. 과거는 후회하고, 미래는 걱정하면 현재의 주님은 사라집니다. 금욕하고 절제할 때 평안이 오고, 평안이 주님을 더 깊게 알 수 있게 만듭니다.

주님을 알려고 하는 욕망,밀려나고 있지만 극복하면 좋겠습니다. 아침 안개 속에서도, 저녁 어둠 속에서도 희망으로 다가 오시는 주님을 더 깊게 알아가는 여러분의 인생이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

Jesus’ Questions 2: Desire and Christ (Luke 9:18-20)

1.Knowing the Lord deeply.
We are looking at the question Jesus asks: ‘Who do I say to you?’ He is asking his disciples, and he is asking us. The intention of the question is clear. It’s a challenge to know and follow Him more deeply.

Jesus is the centre of the Christian faith, the whole thing. The more we know Him, the richer our lives will be, and the more blessed we will be to live a life the world does not know. The Lord has told us many times why He wants us to know Him.

John 10:14 ‘I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and my sheep know me’. The Lord you are to follow is like a shepherd, guiding, protecting, and feeding. You must know him well.

John 15:5: ‘I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in me, and I in him, he bears much fruit. You can do nothing apart from Me’. If we leave Him, our souls dry up, but if we know Him and remain in Him, we bear fruit: love, joy, patience, etc.

John 14:6: ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life’. Here, the way is the ‘way’. Follow my ‘way’, which is the way. The Lord’s way is not lording it over us. Love, humility, forgiveness, sacrifice, and obedience are the Lord’s way, and we are asked to follow that way of life. We can only follow it if we know Him.

④ John 15:15. ‘From now on I have called you friends. Because I have made known to you everything I have heard from the Father’. The Lord is a friend. Not just any friend, but a confidant, the kind of friend who reveals the Father’s secrets. Not knowing the Lord is a loss.

We cannot fully walk the journey of faith without knowing the Lord. When we are close to the Lord, His beauty and fragrance permeate our lives. Just as when you are near a smokestack, the smell of the smog enters your body, and when you are near flowers, the fragrance of the flowers enters your body, so when we are close to the Lord, His fragrance fills us.

There are three Christian genders. They are femininity, masculinity, and spirituality. Spirituality is ‘God-likeness’. Spirituality is the holy quality of a person who has communed with God and experienced God. It is a heavenly and exalted characteristic of those who follow the Lord as the shepherd of their lives, who know Him as the vine and are always with Him.

The Lord is the foundation of this spirituality. Knowing the Lord, following the Lord, becomes a person of beautiful, honourable spirituality. I want to know the Lord better so that I can have this spirituality.

What should I do to know the Lord well? There are two attitudes of mind that one should have in order to know the Lord. One is ‘desire’ and the other is ‘abstinence’. Desire is the longing to know the Lord, and abstinence is the habit and discipline to maintain that desire.

2.Desiring the Lord
First, desire. Desire is a longing for something. Earnestness is the power of desire. Desire is a double-edged sword: it is medicine when handled well, but it is poison when handled badly. When tamed, desire is an oasis of abundance, but when untamed and captivated, it’s a mirage.

Desire gets a bad rap in the church, but desire itself is a gift from God. Imagine not having desire. What would you look like without desire? You’d be like a wilted flower, like a bow with all the strings untied. Good desires, bad desires, they’re all the same.

Because we have desires, we live as hard as we can, as best we can. Because of desires, we sin, because of desires, we get angry. Desires are indispensable. What should we do if we can’t get rid of them? We should avoid desires that only hurt, desires that only leave us empty, and have desires that we should have.

The desires we should have will vary from person to person, but there is a common desire that Christians should have. Desiring God, or more specifically, desiring God’s desires, is a desire, a longing, a desire that every Christian should have.

We desire God’s desires because God’s desires are good, and they are desires that heal a world broken by fallen desires. When we desire God’s desires, we have the same desires. In the Bible, the desires of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are numerous.

(1) The Desire of God the Father
The desires of the Father are described in Micah 6:8: ‘Man. . what does the Lord require of thee but to do justly, and to love thy neighbour, and to walk humbly with thy God?

John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The desire of God the Father is that He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that His people would do justice, love their fellow man and live in humble acknowledgement of God. These are good desires, and they are the desires we should have.

(2) The Desire of God the Son.
The desires of the saint Jesus are well illustrated in Mark 14:36 and John 13:34. Mark 14:36. My Father, all things are possible for you; yet not my will, but yours be done.

John 13:34. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another: that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

The desire of the saint is a strong desire, a desire that your people live in love with one another, not differing from the Father’s will at any moment.

(3) The Desire of God the Father
God the Holy Spirit also has desires. 2Cor.3:18 For we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror, beholding with unveiled face the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

The desires of the Holy Spirit are great. The Holy Spirit desires to transform us into the image of the Lord, into God-likeness. So when we know the desires of the Triune God and align our desires with those desires, we can have the right desires. If we don’t know God, we can’t do much; we can only have the desires of the world.

The desire to know God is a very big desire, a desire that saves us. We should not lose sight of the great desire because of small desires.

3.Be abstinent for the Lord’s sake.
What we need in order not to lose sight of the great desire is ‘abstinence’. Having a good desire does not make it mine; I must make it mine, and the means of making it mine is abstinence.

Abstinence is holding back; not doing what you want to do, but holding back, doing what you have to do. It is abstinence that is unwelcome but necessary in the life of faith, and it is moderation. Just as athletes practice discipline, believers should practice self-control, discipline.

Abstinence is a valuable spiritual discipline. When we have abstinence and discipline, we can enter into a deeper world of faith. It’s not easy to be disciplined, to be abstinent from something in the midst of worldly desires, but when you are disciplined, when you are abstinent, what the prophet Jeremiah said still happens.

‘You will seek me and find me, and I will be found by you, when you seek me with all your heart’ (Jer 29:13).

The reason you will find him is because of the gift of abstinence. You become spiritually sensitive.
Your relationship with God deepens. This is why we need abstinence to deny self and know God as Lord. Abstinence and moderation lead to a deeper faith.

Like a gardener pruning, we need to cut away the things that hinder our life of faith. No one is without branches to cut away. How many things do you give up, hold back, or abstain from for the sake of your faith? What do you need to abstain from?

I’ll show you a few things that need to go, and you can check them out.

① Abstinence from laziness:
Laziness does not go hand in hand with faith; you need to be diligent to do spiritual activities, and laziness is a poison to spiritual growth and spiritual discipline. Get rid of it, and you can restore your life of faith.

② Abstinence from YouTube: YouTube is all the rage. This is an area that requires abstinence. We must not be dominated by it. If not controlled, it will eat up all your time for spiritual life.

③ Abstinence from formal faith: We need to get away from formal faith, which is definitely a hindrance to getting to know the Lord. It is difficult to know the Lord with a faith that is devoid of meaning and sincerity. We need to break away and be sincere in our faith.

④ Abstinence from worry, anxiety, and regret: This is an important abstinence. Worry, anxiety, and regret distract us from focusing on the Lord. When we regret the past and worry about the future, we lose sight of the Lord in the present. With abstinence and self-control comes peace, and peace enables us to know the Lord more deeply.

The desire to know the Lord, though pushed back, may it be overcome. May your life be one of getting to know the Lord more deeply, who comes to you with hope in the morning mist and hope in the evening darkness.
