예수님의 질문2: 너에게 나는 누구냐(눅9:18~20)

추석 연휴 잘 보내셨습니까? 무더운 추석을 보냈지만 어제부터 선선해 지면서 가을이 오고 있습니다. 오는 가을, 보람되고 뜻 깊은 시간 보내기를 바라겠습니다.

1. 질문: 너에게 나는 누구냐?

오늘 ‘드디어’ 예수님의 두 번째 질문을 보게 되었습니다. 첫번째 질문은 ‘무엇을 찾느냐?’였고, 오늘 두 번째 질문은 ‘너에게 나는 누구냐?’입니다. 질문자는 주님이시고, 질문을 받는 사람은 예수님의 제자들입니다.

‘사람들은 나를 이런저런 사람이라 말하지만 나에게 중요한 것은 너희다. 너희에게 나는 누구냐?’. 갑작스러운 질문에 제자들은 당황했을 것입니다. 그럼에도 주님은 꼭 해야 할 질문을 하신 것이고, 제자들은 받아야 할 질문을 받은 것입니다.

예수님이 누군지도 모르고 따른다면, 또 안다한들 잘못 알고 따른다면, 사상누각(沙上樓閣) 밖에 더 되겠습니까? 확인할 수 밖에 없었던 것입니다. 너희들에게 나는 누구냐? 누구인지 알고 따르냐? 우리 앞에도 와 있는 질문입니다. 어떤 대답을 준비하고 있는지 모르겠습니다.

2. 앎의 문턱

예수님 없는 기독교는 없지요? 예수님은 우리 신앙의 중심, 맞지요? 잘 알아야 합니다. 하지만 유감스럽게도 알지 못하게 하는 문턱들 때문에 예수님을 아는 게 생각만큼 쉽지 않습니다. 막는 것도 많고 막히는 것도 많습니다.

문턱은 경계입니다. 한 방에서 다른 방으로 가려면 문턱을 넘어야 하듯이  예수님을 알기 위해서도 문턱을 넘어야 합니다. 그래야 문턱 너머에 있는 다른 세계로 나갈 수있습니다. 문턱에 막혀서 넘지 못하면 그 너머에 무엇이 있는지 무슨 수로 알 수 있겠습니까?

예수님 당시부터 많은 사람들이 예수님을 거부해 왔습니다. 문턱에 걸린 것입니다.

요1:11. 그가 자기 땅에 오매 영접하지 않았다

마12:38. 수 많은 표적을 보여 주었지만 믿지 않았다

눅4:30 회당에서 가르치는 예수님의 가르침에 분노해 낭떠러지로 끌고가 떨어뜨려고했다.

편견과 고집과 자존심과 두려움과 죄성과 교만과 오해라는 문턱에 가로막혀 예수님의 실체를 보지 못했던 것입니다. 지금도 별로 달라진 것 없습니다.  오히려 더 많은 문턱이 생겨 예수님을 알지 못하게 막고 있습니다. 어떤 문턱이 예수님을 가로막고 있습니까?

① 시간의 문턱이 있습니다.
예수님은 2000년전의 과거에 계셨고, 우리는 2,000년 후의 현재에 살고 있습니다.  과거와 현재의 간극은 무시 할 수 없습니다.

② 공간의 문턱도 있습니다.
제자들은 주님과 함께 걷고 먹고 대화하면서 예수님을 느꼈지만, 우리는 예수님을 눈으로 볼 수 없어 멀게 느낄 수 밖에 없습니다.

③ 문화와 사회적 문턱도 무시할 수 없습니다. 
‘아직도 교회 다녀!’ 라는 말에  아무 소리 못합니다. 바빠 죽겠는데 한가에게 무슨 예수님입니까?

④ 지식의 문턱도 높습니다.
과학주의, 인간중심주의가 대세입니다. 영성, 신비, 하나님이라는 단어의 의미가 다 죽어 있습니다. 하나님의 아들 예수, 그 예수의 부활이라는 사건을 받아들일만한 열림이 없습니다.

⑤ 영적인 무지와 타락도 예수님을 막는 무서운 문턱입니다.
많은 문턱들이 있지만, 여기까지만 보겠습니다. 이러한 문턱들이 신자와 불신자 모두를 막고 있습니다. ‘예수가 누구지? 그 사람 뭔데..O my God. 할렐루야’

3. 문턱넘기

신자의 입장에서는 기분 나쁜일이지만 기분 나쁜 것으로 끝낼 문제는 아닙니다. 문턱이 높으면 문턱을 낮추든지, 사다리를 갖다 대든지 해서 넘어야 하고, 넘게 만들어야 합니다. 우리들이 해야 할 일입니다. 이미 수 많은 사람들이 넘었습니다. 넘은 사람들이 도와주면 넘을 수 있습니다.

돕는다는 것은 다른게 아닙니다. 예수님을 알려줘서 예수님이 어떤 분인지 ‘맛’(진가, 진실)을 보여 주는 것입니다. 왜 예수인지, 예수님이 누구인지 ‘맛’을 보게 되면 문턱이 있어도 예수 맛을 본 사람들에게는 문제가 되지 않습니다. 넘어갑니다.

예전에 탈북자들이 담을 넘어 탈북하는 장면을 본적이 있습니다.외국 대사관으로 들어가는데 정문으로 들어 갈 수 없게되 대사관 담을 넘어서 들어갔습니다. 대사관 담이 높습니다. 그런데도 엎드려서 등을 대주고, 어깨를 내주면서 넘어갑니다. 누릴 수 없었던 자유를 맛보고, 담을 넘은 것입니다.

예수님도 맛보면 이런 일이 생깁니다. 넘어갑니다. 예수님을 알려 주고, 알아 가는게 중요합니다. 예수님을 알기 위해서는 두 가지 관점에서 접근해야 합니다. 하나는 ‘역사의 예수’이고, 또 하나는 ‘신앙의 예수’입니다.

(1) 역사의 예수

‘역사의 예수’는 2000년 전 베들레헴에서 태어나고, 사셨던 역사적 존재로서의 예수님입니다. 갈릴리에서 살았습니다. 직업은 목수였습니다. 어머니는 마리아, 아버지는 요셉입니다.  형제도 있습니다. 그렇게 살던 어느날 하늘의 세례를 받으면서 약속된 메시아로 사람들 앞에 나타납니다.

갈릴리 민중의 피폐한 모습을 보면서 누구도 예상하지 못하는 비범한 말씀을 전하고, 병자를 고치며, 기적을 행하며, 자신이 하나님의 아들이라는 사실을 선포하다 십자가에 죽은 역사적 인물이 ‘역사의 예수’입니다.

(2) 신앙의 예수

하지만 예수님에게는 역사라고 하는 시공간에 담을 수 없는 ‘신앙의 예수’가 있습니다. 예수님은 부활하셨고 승천하셨습니다. 다시 오실 것입니다.  성령으로 우리와 함께 하십니다. ‘신앙의 예수’입니다.

예수님을 알기 위해서는 이 두 예수, ’역사의 예수’와 ‘신앙의 예수’를 함께 붙잡아야 합니다. ‘역사의 예수’만 알고 있으면 위대한 인물로만 여길 수 있고, ‘신앙의 예수’만 알면 실체 없는 허구의 예수를 믿게 될 수 있습니다. 두 가지, 전부 우리가 고백하는 예수님입니다.

‘역사의 예수’는 복음서에서 알 수 있으며, ‘신앙의 예수’는 예수님의 영이신 보혜사 성령을 통해 알 수 있습니다. 복음서를 통해 예수님의 삶과 죽음, 부활의 역사성을 알고, 성령은 그 사건들 뒤에 숨겨진 영적인 진실을 우리에게 깨닫게 해줍니다.

‘역사의 예수’가 오늘 우리가 따르는 예수가 되는 것은 성령을 통해서 입니다. 성령을 통해 우리는 과거의 예수님이 아닌, 살아 계신 예수님을 만나게 되고, 나의 주, 나의 하나님으로 고백하게 됩니다.

물론 한 번의 고백으로 끝나는 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 예수님을 안다고 하지만 얼마나 알 수 있겠습니까? 예수님의 영이신 성령의 도움과 인도로 더 깊이 알아갈 때, 더 선명하게 예수님을 알게 됩니다.베드로 사도의 권면을 들어 보십시오. “오직 우리 주 곧 구주 예수 그리스도의 은혜와 그를 아는 지식에서 자라 가라” (벧후 3:18).

“예수 더 알기 원하네, 크고도 넓은 은혜와, 대속해 주신 사랑을 간절히 알기 원하네. 내 평생의 소원, 내 평생의 소원, 대속해 주신 사랑을 간절히 알기 원하네” (찬송가 453장 1절).

이런 마음으로 예수님의 말씀과 행동을 숙고하고, 예수의 영을 구할 때 예수님은 더 이상 시간과 공간과 문화와 지적인 문턱에 막히지 않고 살아계신 하나님의 아들 그리스도로 우리에게 존재하게 됩니다.

여러분들은 복음서에 나오는 예수님의 모습 중에서 어떤 장면이 기억에 남으십니까? 놀랍고, 예상치 못한 모습이 너무 많습니다.

제자들의 더러운 발, 허리 굽혀 씻겨준 장면 기억나십니까?  당시 문화에서는 상상할 수 없는 놀라운 행동입니다. 배반하는 가룟유다가 군인들에게 예수 잡으라는 사인으로 주님께 입맞춤을 하는데도 거절하지 않고 그대로 받아 주십니다. 간음하다 잡혀 나와 돌아 맞아 죽을 수도 있는 여인을 말씀 하나로 살려냅니다. ‘죄있는 자가 먼저 돌로쳐라’. 다 물러납니다. 떳떳치 못한 과거 때문에 사람들의 눈을 피해 우물가에 온 여인을 부정하다 피하지 않고 위로하고 용기를 줍니다. 폭풍우도 잠잠케 하고, 오병이어의 기적으로 당신의 권세도 보여주십니다.십자가에서 죽지만, 부활하세요. 예수님이 누구인지를 보여주는 뜻 깊은 장면들입니다.

이런 장면들 하나하나가 마음 깊은 곳에 각인될 때 역사의 예수가 보이고, 신앙의 예수가 보여 예수님의 실체를 알게 되는 것입니다. 주님은 사람이셨고, 하나님이셨구나. 하나님을 잊어 버린 세상을 회복하시는 하나님의 계획이 주님에게서 성취되고 있는 것입니다. 주님 말씀하십니다.

① ’나는 부활이요 생명이다. 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살고, 살아서 나를 믿는 사람은 영원히 죽지 않는다. 이것을 믿느냐’(요11:25~26)

② ’나는 알파와 오메가, 곧 처음이며 마지막이요 시작과 끝이다’(계22:13)

③ ’나는 빛나는 새벽별이다’(계22:16). 희망이라는 것입니다.

④ ’나는 하나님의 아들이다, 신성 모독이라 하지 말라’(요10:36)

엄청난 선언들인데, 이런 선언을 보면서 C.S.Lewis가 한마디 합니다. 그렇다면  예수님은 이 세 가지 중 하나일 수 밖에 없다. 거짓말쟁이(Liar)든지, 미친 사람(Lunatic) 이든지, 아니면 정말 주님(Lord)이든지.

저는 주님이 (성자) 하나님이기에 목사도 하고, 믿음도 가집니다. 성령께서 이 사실이 더 합리적이고, 이성적이라고 하기에 다시 오실 예수님에 대한 믿음을 포기할 생각이 없습니다.

그래서 지금 주님께서 ‘너에게 나는 누구냐’ 묻는다면, 폼나게 이렇게 대답하고 싶습니다.

주님은 희망입니다.

아침 안개 속에서도

저녁 어둠 속에서도

흔들릴 때마다 빛나게 하시는 생명과 구원의 빛이십니다.

주님은 삶의 이유입니다.

어떤 순간에도 나의 피난처, 나의 숨결이십니다.

살아서나 죽어서나 주님만이 나와 함께 하십니다.

주님을 알고, 주님을 사랑하고, 주님을 따르는 것이 여러분의 인생에서 가장 큰 사건, 가장 잘한 일, 가장 큰 힘이 되기를 바랍니다.

Jesus’ Question 2: Who am I to you (Luke 9:18-20)

We had a very hot Mid-Autumn Festival, but as of yesterday, it’s getting cooler and autumn is on its way. We hope you have a rewarding and meaningful time this autumn.

1. Question: Who do I say to you?

Today we ‘finally’ see Jesus’ second question. The first question was “What do you seek?”, and today the second question is “Who am I to you?”. The questioner is the Lord, and the questioned are Jesus’ disciples.

‘People say I am this and that, but what matters to me is you. Who am I to you?’. The suddenness of the question must have taken the disciples by surprise, but the Lord asked the question that needed to be asked, and the disciples received the question that needed to be received.

If you don’t know who Jesus is and you follow him, or if you know and you follow him but you get it wrong, you’re nothing more than a castle in the air. They had to find out. Who do you say that I am? Do you know who I am and do you follow me? It’s a question that’s right in front of us, and I don’t know what answer we have.

2. The threshold of knowledge

There is no Christianity without Jesus, is there? Jesus is the centre of our faith, right? We should know him well, but unfortunately, knowing him is not as easy as it sounds because of the thresholds that keep us from knowing him. There are many things that block us, many things that keep us from knowing him.

A threshold is a boundary. Just like you have to cross a threshold to get from one room to another, you have to cross a threshold to get to know Jesus, so that you can step over the threshold into the other world that lies beyond. If you’re stuck at the threshold and can’t cross it, how can you possibly know what’s on the other side?

Since the time of Jesus, many people have rejected Jesus because they are stuck at the threshold.

John 1:11. He came into his own land and was not received.

Matthew 12:38 He showed them many signs, but they did not believe.

Lk.4:30 Angered by Jesus’ teaching in the synagogue, he dragged him to a cliff and tried to throw him off.

They were blinded by the thresholds of prejudice, stubbornness, pride, fear, sin, pride, and misunderstanding that prevented them from seeing Jesus for who he really was. Not much has changed now; if anything, more thresholds have arisen to keep them from knowing Jesus. What thresholds are keeping you from Jesus?

① There is a time barrier.

Jesus lived in the past, 2000 years ago, and we live in the present, 2,000 years later. The gap between past and present cannot be ignored.

② There is also a threshold of space.
The disciples felt Jesus as they walked, ate, and talked with him, but we can’t see him with our eyes, so we can only feel distant.

③ We can’t ignore cultural and social thresholds either. ‘I’m still going to church!’ I can’t say anything. What kind of Jesus is Jesus to a busy person?

④ The threshold of knowledge is also high. Scientism and anthropocentrism are all the rage. Spirituality, mystery, and the meaning of the word God are all dead. There is no opening to accept the event of Jesus, the Son of God, and his resurrection.

⑤ Spiritual ignorance and depravity are also frightening thresholds that keep Jesus out.

There are many thresholds, but let’s stop here. These are the thresholds that keep believers and unbelievers alike from saying, ‘Who is Jesus? What is he…O my God. Hallelujah.

3. Crossing the threshold

It’s unpleasant for the believer, but it’s not a matter of feeling unpleasant. If the threshold is high, we have to get over it, we have to get over it, we have to get a ladder over it, we have to get over it. That’s what we have to do, and so many people have already done it. You can cross over if you help those who have crossed over.

Helping is not something else, it’s giving them a ‘taste’ (the real thing, the truth) of what Jesus is like by telling them about Jesus. When they get a ‘taste’ of why Jesus is and who Jesus is, it doesn’t matter if there is a barrier, they’ve got a taste of Jesus. They go over.

I once saw a film of North Koreans escaping from North Korea by climbing over a wall.They were going into a foreign embassy and they couldn’t get in through the main entrance, so they climbed over the embassy wall. The embassy wall is high, but they get down on their stomachs, give their backs, give their shoulders, and go over. He tastes the freedom that was denied him, and he goes over the wall.

This is what happens when you taste Jesus. They cross over. It’s important to make Jesus known, to get to know him. To know Jesus, we need to approach him from two perspectives: the Jesus of history and the Jesus of faith.

(1) Jesus of History

The Jesus of history is the historical Jesus who was born and lived in Bethlehem 2000 years ago. He lived in Galilee; he was a carpenter by profession; his mother was Mary; his father was Joseph; he had siblings; and one day, he was baptised in heaven and appeared before people as the promised Messiah.

The Jesus of history is the historical figure who, seeing the devastation of the people of Galilee, spoke extraordinary words that no one expected, healed the sick, performed miracles, proclaimed himself to be the Son of God, and died on a cross.

(2) Jesus of faith

But there is a Jesus of faith that cannot be contained in the time and space of history. Jesus is resurrected and ascended. He will come again, and he is with us in the Holy Spirit – the Jesus of faith.

To know Jesus, we need to hold these two Jesuses together: the Jesus of history and the Jesus of faith. If we only know the Jesus of history, we can only see him as a great man; if we only know the Jesus of faith, we can believe in a fictional Jesus who has no substance. Both are the Jesus we profess.

The Jesus of history can be found in the Gospels, and the Jesus of faith can be found through the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Jesus. We know the historicity of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection through the Gospels, and the Holy Spirit enables us to realise the spiritual truth behind those events.

It is through the Holy Spirit that the ‘Jesus of history’ becomes the Jesus we follow today. It is through the Holy Spirit that we encounter the living Jesus, not the Jesus of the past, and confess him as my Lord and my God.

Of course, it’s not just a one-time confession. We may say we know Jesus, but how much do we really know? As we get to know him more deeply, with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus, we come to know him more clearly.Listen to the Apostle Peter’s exhortation. ‘Grow in the grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and in the knowledge of him’ (2 Peter 3:18).

‘Jesus, I long to know you more, I long to know your great and wide grace, your ransomed love. My life’s desire, my life’s desire, my life’s desire, I long to know His ransomed love’ (Hymn 453, stanza 1).

When we ponder the words and actions of Jesus with this mindset, when we seek the Spirit of Jesus, Jesus is no longer limited by time, space, culture, and intellectual thresholds, but becomes present to us as Christ, the Son of the living God.

What images of Jesus do you remember from the Gospels? There are so many that are surprising and unexpected.

Remember when he bent down and washed the disciples’ dirty feet? An incredible act, unthinkable in the culture of the time. When the betraying Judas Iscariot kisses Jesus as a sign to the soldiers to get him, Jesus doesn’t reject him, but accepts him. The woman caught in adultery, about to be beaten to death, is saved with one word: ‘Let her who is without sin be the first to be stoned’. The crowd backs off. A woman who comes to the well, shunned by the people because of her shameful past, is denied, but instead of shunning her, he comforts and encourages her. He calms the storm and demonstrates his authority with the miracle of the five lepers.He dies on the cross, but rises from the dead. These are meaningful scenes that show us who Jesus is.

When each of these scenes is imprinted deep in our hearts, we see the Jesus of history, we see the Jesus of faith, and we know the reality of Jesus. He was both man and God, and God’s plan to restore a world that has forgotten God is being fulfilled in Him. Jesus says

① ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he dies, will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ (John 11:25-26)

② ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end’ (Revelation 22:13).

③ ‘I am the bright and morning star’ (Revelation 22:16). This is hope.

④ ‘I am the Son of God, do not blaspheme’ (John 10:36).

These are bold declarations, and C.S. Lewis once said: Jesus must be one of three things. Either He was a liar, a lunatic, or He was really Lord.

I am a pastor and a believer because He is God. I have no intention of giving up my faith in the returning Jesus because the Holy Spirit tells me this makes more sense, more rational sense.

So if the Lord were to ask me now, ‘Who am I to you’, I would answer with dignity: ‘I am hope.

You are hope.

In the morning fog

In the evening darkness

You are the light of life and salvation that shines through every faltering step.

You are the reason for living.

You are my refuge, my breath in every moment.

In life and in death, You alone are with me.

May knowing the Lord, loving the Lord, and following the Lord be the greatest event, the best thing you’ve ever done, and the greatest strength in your life.
