예수님의 질문 2: 하나님이 아는 자의 삶(롬8:35~39)

추석입니다. 가정마다 결실의 기쁨과 감사가 넘치기를 바라겠습니다.

1.주님이 나를 안다.
오늘도 지난 주에 봤던 질문 계속 보도록 하겠습니다. ‘주님은 나를 아십니까?’라는 질문을 세번째 보고 있습니다. 주님은 ‘나를 알고 있느냐’고 물어 보시지만, 우리 입장에서는 주님이 누구인지를 안다해도 주님이 나를 모르면 닭 쫓던 개 지붕쳐다 보는 꼴이 될 수 있기에 물어보고 있습니다.

물어 본 결과는 주님은 ‘나를 안다’였습니다. 성경은 머뭇거리지도 않고, 양보하지도 않습니다. ‘나의 앉고 일어서심도 알고, 나의 생각도 아시고, 하늘에 있어도 알고, 어둠 가운데 있어도 알고 있다’고 선포합니다.

하나님이 나를 안다는 것이 얼마나 놀라운 일인가 하면, 밤 하늘에 촘촘히 박혀있는 수 많은 별들 중에서 하나의 별을 아는 것과 같습니다. 별이 얼마나 많습니까? 관측가능한 별만 추정해도 2000조개의 별이 있다고 하는데 그 중에 하나를 아는 것입니다.

바다가의 모래가 얼마나 많습니까? 그 무수한 모래 알 중에서 하나를 아는 것이 하나님이 나를 아는 것과 같다고 할 수 있습니다. 신비한 일이고, 놀라운 일입니다. 하나님이 나를 안다는 사실을 그리스도인들은 대충 알아서는 안됩니다. 명징(明徵, 분명한 증거)하게 알아야 합니다.

신자의 정체성은 ‘하나님이 아는 자’입니다. 신자는 하나님이 알고 있기에 ‘하나님의 사랑을 받는 자’입니다. 중요하고, 귀한 정체성입니다. 성령의 은혜없이는 가늠하기 쉽지 않은 일이지만 하나님은 이런 사실을 믿음을 가지고 고백할 때 하나님의 자녀라고 하는 권세와 은혜속에 살아가게 하십니다.

‘너희는 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로(은혜를 받아들이는 믿음이라는 수단으로) 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라. 행위에서 난 것이 아니니 이는 누구든지 자랑하지 못하게 함이라'(엡2:8~9)

우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라(롬5:8)

하나님이 나를 아는 것은 우연히 일어난 일이 아닙니다. 하나님의 은혜와 사랑 가운데 일어난구원이고, 부르심입니다. 나를 존재케 하시고, 나를 부르시고, 나를 아시고, 나를 사랑하시고, 이 지독한 죄의 현장에서도 나를 붙들어 주시는 모든 것이 ‘은혜’입니다.

하나님의 ‘아심’은 우리에게 준 최고의 선물이고, 최고의 보상입니다. 하지만 이 은혜로 ‘하나님의 아심’이 고난이라는 현실을 겪을 때 훼손됩니다. ‘하나님, 나를 아신다면서요? 이게 아시는 겁니까? 이게 사랑하는 겁니까?’ 아는 것 같지 않고, 사랑받는 것 같지 않는 아픔을 겪게 됩니다. 이걸 극복해야 합니다.

2.사랑과 고난
사람에게는 누구나 겪는 두 가지 삶의 경험이 있습니다. 사랑과 고난입니다. 사람이 갖는 근본 경험입니다. 사랑이 필요없는 사람이 있습니까? 없습니다. 고난 없이 사는 사람이 있습니까? 없습니다. 고난이 있기에 고난이 오면 고난을 이기는 사랑도 있어야 합니다. 그리고 고난을 이기는 사랑은 고난보다 커야 고난을 이길 수 있습니다.

‘하나님 이게 뭡니까?’라는 푸념과 불만은 사랑으로 고난을 이길 때 멈출 수 있습니다. 고난을 이기는 사랑은 어디 있습니까? 이 사랑을 찾아야 합니다. 사람에게도 좋은 사랑이 있지만 고난을 이기는 사랑은 하나님에게서 찾는 게 제일 좋습니다.

성경의 일관된 초청이 있습니다. ‘내가 너를 안다. 내가 너를 사랑한다. 눈을 크게 떠 나를 보고, 내 안에 있는 사랑을 발견해 고난에 지지마라’. 하나님이 아는 사람은 고난의 현실이 올 때마다 하나님의 사랑을 가지고 고난을 이겨야 합니다.

하나님의 사랑으로 고난을 극복하고, 이겨내는 사람이 하나님이 아는 자의 삶입니다.

오늘 바울의 놀라운 선포를 읽었는데 이 안에 하나님의 사랑이 어떤 사랑인지 나타나 있습니다.

35.누가 우리를 그리스도의 사랑에서 끊으리요 환난이나 곤고나 박해나 기근이나 적신이나 위험이나 칼이랴 36.기록된 바 우리가 종일 주를 위하여 죽임을 당하게 되며 도살 당할 양 같이 여김을 받았나이다 함과 같으니라 37. 그러나 이 모든 일에 우리를 사랑하시는 이로 말미암아 우리가 넉넉히 이기느니라 38.내가 확신하노니 사망이나 생명이나 천사들이나 권세자들이나 현재 일이나 장래 일이나 능력이나 39.높음이나 깊음이나 다른 어떤 피조물이라도 우리를 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없으리라

고난 많았던 자신의 삶을 이기게 했던 것은 ‘하나님의 사랑’이라는 고백이고, 선포입니다. 바울이 말하는 하나님의 사랑은 한 마디로 능력입니다. 하나님의 사랑은 실체가 없는 언어 유희가 아닙니다. 비유하면 핵폭탄급 위력을 가지 능력입니다. 이 사랑이 한번 터지면 고난도, 실패도, 죽음도 다 날라가 버립니다.

‘하나님의 사랑’을 깊게 봐야 합니다. 하나님의 사랑은 ‘능력’입니다. 능력인 이유를 바울은 이렇게 말합니다.

(1) 하나님의 사랑은 끊을 수 없기에 능력입니다.
35절. 누가 우리를 그리스도의 사랑에서 끊을 수 있다고 말하는가? 끊을 수 없다. 환난. 곤고(딱한 처지), 박해, 기근(굶주림), 적신(벌거벗음), 위험, 칼도 주님의 사랑은 어떻게 못한다. 하나님의 사랑은 어떤 것도 끊을 수 없는 큰 사랑입니다.

(2)하나님의 사랑은 영원하고 변함이 없기에 능력입니다.
38절. 나는 확신한다. 하나님의 사랑은 사망도 생명도, 천사들도 권세자들도, 현재도 미래도, 높음도 깊음도 그런 시공간에 구애받지 않는 영원히 변함없는 사랑이다. 완전한 사랑, 의리가 있는 사랑입니다. 하나님의 사랑은 능력이 많은 사랑입니다.

(3) 하나님의 사랑은 구원과 구원의 확신을 주기에 능력입니다.
37절. 이 모든 일에 우리를 사랑하시는 이로 말미암아 우리가 넉넉히 이긴다.하나님의 사랑은 자신이 있습니다. 넉넉히 이기게 하는 사랑입니다. 하나님은 지지 않습니다. 죄를 이기고, 고난도 이기고, 죽음도 이깁니다. 하나님의 사랑은 능력입니다.

하나님의 사랑은 끊을 수 없는 사랑, 영원히 변치않는 사랑, 구원을 주는 사랑입니다. 능력있는 사랑입니다.

3.책임: 하나님이 아는 자의 삶의 모습
이처럼 강한 사랑이 (끊을 수 없는 사랑, 영원한 사랑, 구원을 주는 사랑) 하나님이 알고 있는 자가 받는 사랑입니다. 이 사랑을 하나님이 안다는 것을 자부하는 사람들이 찾아야 합니다. 하나님이 아는 사람들은 하나님의 사랑을 파멸시키려고 달려드는 고난을 강력한 하나님의 사랑을 찾아내서 극복해 내야 합니다.

저는 이 사랑을 황금같은 사랑으로 표현해 봤습니다. 하나님의 사랑은 황금같은 사랑입니다. 황금같은 사랑을 낭비하지 말고, 반짝반짝 빛나게 만들어야 합니다. 고난을 이겨내면 환하게 빚날 것입니다.

빛나게 만드는 게 황금같은 사랑을 받은 자의 책임입니다. 은혜는 값없이 받은 선물이지만 그 선물이 귀하다면 선물을 받은 사람은 받은 것으로 끝내면 안됩니다. 받은 은혜에 상응하는 책임을 가지고 은혜를 빛나게 만들어야 합니다.

빛나게 하는 방법 알고 계십니까? 저는 ‘진정성’이라는 한 단어로 정리해 봤습니다. 사랑을 받은 사람들에게 ‘진정성’이 있을 때 하나님의 사랑도 빛나고, 하나님 자신도 빛이 납니다. 하나님의 은혜와 사랑을 받은 사람은 삶에 ‘진정성'(sincerity)이 있어야 합니다.

진정성은 안과 밖이 일치하는 것입니다. 속의 신앙과 밖의 행동이 같고, 말과 행동이 다르지 않고, 여기서와 저기서가 일치할 때 진정성이 있는 것입니다.

쉽진 않습니다. 사람은 이해득실 앞에 약합니다. 인정과 성공에 대한 열망도 강합니다. 타협도 하게되고, 부정 앞에 눈을 감을 때도 많습니다. 잠깐은 괜찮을 수 있지만 계속 이런 타협이 있다보면 빛나야 할 빛이 가려지게 됩니다. 처음에는 자신들과 비슷한 것을 보면서 사람들이 환영합니다. ‘통이 크네, 쩨쩨하지 않네’.

하지만 나중에는 정색하고 말합니다. ‘신자가 뭐 그래’, 표리가 부동한 교회와 신자들을 보면서 맛을 잃은 소금처럼 대해 버립니다. 하나님이 나를 알아주는 사랑과 은혜 속에 있다면 그에 걸맞는 삶, 진정성 있는 삶을 살아내야 합니다.

유혹에 약하지 않고, 부당한 압력이 와도 위축되지 않고, 어려운 일 생겨도 주님이 함께하심을 신뢰하면서 희망을 품고 인내하고, 해야할 사랑 있다면 하고, 섬겨야 할 것이 있다면 섬길 때 하나님은 기뻐하시고, 그런 인생을 축복하실 것입니다.

‘하나님, 저를 아십니까?’ ‘안다’. 이 주의 음성을 기억하고 하나님이 아는 사람답게 의연하고 담대하게 살아 가십시다.

Jesus’ Question 2: The Life of the One God Knows (Romans 8:35-39)

It’s Thanksgiving. May your home be filled with fruitful joy and thanksgiving.

1.The Lord knows me
Today we continue with the question we looked at last week, ‘Does the Lord know me?’ for the third time. The Lord is asking, ‘Do you know me?’ but we’re asking because even if we know who He is, if He doesn’t know me, we’d be like a dog chasing a chicken.

The result of the question is that He ‘knows me’. The Bible doesn’t hesitate, it doesn’t make concessions: ‘You know my sitting and my standing, you know my thoughts, you know when I am in heaven, you know when I am in darkness’, it declares.

How amazing it is that God knows me, it’s like knowing one star among the many, many stars that dot the night sky. How many stars are there? An estimate of the observable ones alone says there are 20,000 trillion stars, and you know one of them.

How many grains of sand are there in the ocean? Knowing one of those grains of sand is like God knowing me. It’s mysterious, it’s amazing. The fact that God knows me is not something Christians should take lightly. We should know it by clear evidence.

The believer’s identity is ‘known by God’. Because the believer is known by God, he or she is ‘loved by God. This is an important, precious identity. It is not easy to grasp without the grace of the Holy Spirit, but when we confess this in faith, God enables us to live in the authority and grace of being God’s children.

‘For by grace are ye saved through faith (the means of accepting grace), and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: it is the gift of grace. Not of works, lest anyone should boast’ (Ephesians 2:8-9).

God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).

It is not by chance that God knows me; it is a salvation, a calling, an act of God’s grace and love. It is ‘grace’ that brings me into existence, calls me, knows me, loves me, and sustains me in the midst of this heinous sin.

God’s ‘knowing’ is the greatest gift and the greatest reward he has ever given us. But this grace is undermined when we experience the reality of suffering. ‘God, you said you know me, is this what you know, is this what you love?’ We experience pain that doesn’t feel like knowing, that doesn’t feel like being loved. We have to overcome this.

2.Love and suffering
There are two life experiences that everyone goes through. They are love and suffering. They are fundamental human experiences. Is there anyone who doesn’t need love? No. Is there anyone who lives without suffering? No. When there is suffering, there must be a love that overcomes suffering. And the love that overcomes suffering must be greater than suffering to overcome suffering.

The whining and complaining, ‘God, what is this?’ can stop when we overcome suffering with love. Where is the love that overcomes suffering? We need to find this love. There is good love from people, but the love that overcomes suffering is best found in God.

There is a consistent invitation in the Bible: ‘I know you. I love you. Open your eyes to see me, find the love that is in me, and don’t be overcome by suffering.’ Whenever the reality of suffering comes, those who are known by God are to overcome it with God’s love.

This is the life of the one who is known by God, who overcomes suffering with the love of God.

Today we read an amazing proclamation from Paul that shows us what God’s love is like.

35.Who shall separate us from the love of Christ, neither tribulation, nor distress, nor persecution, nor famine, nor nakedness, nor peril, nor sword, 36.For it is written, We are killed for the Lord’s sake all the day long, and are counted as sheep to be slaughtered 37. But in all these things we conquer more than abundantly through him that loved us. 38.For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

It is the confession and proclamation of ‘the love of God’ that has overcome his troubled life. The love of God that Paul speaks of is, in a word, power. God’s love is not a play of words with no substance. It is a power that has the power of a nuclear bomb. Once it explodes, it blows away all suffering, failure, and death.

We need to take a deeper look at ‘the love of God’. God’s love is a power. Paul explains why it is a power

(1) God’s love is power because it cannot be broken.
Verse 35. Who says that anyone can separate us from the love of Christ? It cannot be separated. Tribulation. Hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and the sword cannot break the love of the Lord. God’s love is so great that nothing can cut it off.

(2) God’s love is powerful because it is eternal and unchanging.
Verse 38. I am convinced. The love of God is an everlasting love, not subject to death or life, to angels or powers, to the present or the future, to height or depth, or any such time or space. It is a perfect love, a loyal love. God’s love is a powerful love.

(3) God’s love is powerful because it saves and gives assurance of salvation.
Verse 37. In all these things we abundantly conquer through him that loved us.The love of God is confident. It is a love that overcomes abundantly. God does not lose; it overcomes sin, it overcomes suffering, it overcomes death. God’s love is power.

God’s love is an unbreakable love, an everlasting love, a saving love. It is a powerful love.

3.Accountability: What does life look like for those whom God knows?
This strong love (unbreakable love, everlasting love, saving love) is the love of those who are known by God. This love is to be sought by those who boast that they are known by God. Those who are known by God are to seek out and overcome the trials that threaten to destroy God’s love by seeking out the powerful love of God.

I have described this love as a golden love. God’s love is a golden love. We shouldn’t waste it, but make it sparkle and shine. If you overcome the hardships, you will be rewarded with brilliance.

It is the responsibility of the recipient of golden love to make it shine. Grace is an unearned gift, but if the gift is precious, the recipient should not end with the gift. You must take on the responsibility commensurate with the grace you’ve received and make it shine.

Do you know how to make it shine? I have summarised it in one word: ‘authenticity’. When there is ‘authenticity’ in those who have been loved, God’s love shines through, and God Himself shines through. Those who have received God’s grace and love must have ‘sincerity’ in their lives.

Sincerity is the unity of the inside and the outside: when the faith inside and the behaviour outside are the same, when words and deeds are not different, when here and there are consistent.

It’s not easy. We’re weak before understanding. The desire for recognition and success is strong. We compromise, and we often close our eyes in the face of negativity, which can be fine for a while, but if you keep doing it, it obscures the light that should be shining. At first, people see something similar to themselves, and they welcome it: ‘She’s got a big heart, she’s not a prude’.

But later on, they turn sour and say, ‘What’s a believer to do’, and they see churches and believers who have lost their mark and treat them like salt that has lost its flavour. If I am in the love and grace of God’s recognition of me, I should live a life worthy of it, a life of authenticity.

When you are not weak in temptation, when you do not shrink when unjust pressure comes, when you persevere in hope, trusting that God is with you even when things are difficult, when you love if you have something to love, when you serve if you have something to serve, God is pleased and will bless such a life.

‘God, do you know me?’ “I know”. Let’s remember the voice of this Lord and live boldly and resolutely like the person God knows.
