예수님의 질문 2: 너에게 나는 누구냐?-나를 아십니까?(시139:1~12)

예수님의 질문을 보는 중에 있습니다. 두 번째 질문, 보고있습니다. ‘너에게 나는 누구냐?’라는 중요한 질문을 주님께서 하시는데, 지난 주에는 이 질문에 앞서서 와야 하는 질문을 봤습니다.

1.나를 아십니까?
주님께서 날 아느냐? 하시지만 우리 입장에서는 ‘그러면 주님께서는 절 아십니까?’ 라고 되물을 수도 있습니다. 주님께서 모르신다면, 또 알아도 대충 안다면 우리의 신앙과 믿음은 공허해 질 수 있기에 우리도 물어보는 것입니다.

나를 얼마나 아시는가? 나의 고통을 아시는가? 나의 눈물을 아시는가? 나의 불만을 아시는가? 나의 나됨을 아시는가? 아시나요? 지난 말씀 드린 것 처럼, 성경은 단호하게, ‘안다’라고 말하고 있습니다. 한번이 아니고 수도 없이 많이 성부 하나님을 통해, 성자 예수님을 통해, 성령 하나님을 통해 ‘안다’는 사인을 보내주고 있습니다.

나의 앉고 일어서는 것, 나의 생각, 나의 모든 행위, 내 혀의 말까지 아시고, 내가 어디를 가더라도, 그곳이 하늘이라도, 스올이라도, 흑암이 덮고 있어도, 빛 가운데 있어도 주님은 함께 하시고, 알고 있다고 선포합니다.

시인이 6절에서 고백하는 것처럼, 이러한 ‘아심’은 너무 놀랍고 신비한 하나님의 행위고, 하나님의 하나님 되심을 보여주는 권세입니다.

‘하나님이 나를 안다는 것’을 ‘아는 것’이 신앙의 출발이고, 밑바탕입니다. 하나님이 나를 안다는 것을 알 때 믿음이 나오고, 희망도 생기고, 사랑이 흐르게 됩니다. 신자의 위로가 어디서 오는지 아십니까? 하나님이 나를 안다는 확신에서 오는 위로가 최고의 위로입니다. 하나님이 나를 안다는 것을 알 때 고난을 이길 힘이 생기지 어디서 무지막지한 고난을 이길 수 있습니까?

하나님이 나를 안다는 것을 가볍게 여기거나, 당연하게 여겨서는 안됩니다. 나를 안다는 사실에 깊게 공감하고, 확신할수록 신자의 삶은 풍성해 집니다. 7절. ‘내가 주의 영을 떠나 어디로 가며 주의 앞에서 어디로 피하리이까’. 언제 어디서나 하나님의 임재를 누리면서 살게 됩니다.

나를 아느냐는 질문이 중요한 이유입니다. 저는 이 질문을 통해 우리 모두가 하나님이 나를 알고 있다는 확신과 감격 속에 살면 좋겠습니다.

2.확신의 장애물
하지만, 신앙의 현실은 아쉽지만 하나님이 나를 알고 있다는 확신을 꺽을 때가 많습니다. 주님이 나를 알고 있다는 말을 들을때 어떤 기분이 드십니까? 기분 좋으세요? 감사하고, 감격하십니까? 아니면 별 느낌없이 무덤덤하십니까? 속상하고, 힘드십니까? 하나님이 나를 안다는 사실에 감격하고, 감사하는게 맞지만 현실은 놓칠때가 많습니다.

이 귀한 사실을 왜 놓칠까요? 언제 놓칠까요? 몇가지 정리해 왔으니까 들어 보시기 바랍니다.

(1) 지적 장애물(Intellectual Obstacles)
하나님이 나를 안다는 사실을 믿지 못하게 하는 첫번째 장애물은 지적인 장애물입니다. 여기서 지적이라는 것은 하나님의 존재를 거부하고 인정하지 않는 것입니다. 이런 지식 체계에서는 하나님이 나를 안다. 이런 얘기는 받을 수가 없습니다.

존재가 없는데 무슨 앎이 있겠습니까? 하나님이 나를 안다는 것은 짜고 치는 고스톱처럼 신자들끼리 ‘그러면 좋겠다’라고 만들어낸 희망 사항 밖에 되지 않는 것입니다. 세속사회 대부분의 사람들이 가지고 있는 그들만의 판단이고, 생각입니다. 그들의 지식이 하나님을 막고, 하나님이 안다는 것을 막고 있는 것입니다.

문제는 우리 그리스도인들입니다. 하나님이 없다는 세속 사회 한 복판에 살면서 자꾸 물들어 갑니다. 어떻게 물들어 갑니까? 하나님을 거부하고 살아가는 사람들의 가치관과 삶의 패턴으로 물들어 갑니다. ‘하나님이 없다’, 말하지는 않지만 중시하지도 않습니다. 하나님이 나를 알고 있다는 의식없이 살아갈 때가 많지 않은가요?

하나님을 부정하는 세상의 지식과 사고 체계가 하나님이 안다는 신앙의 진실을 막고 있습니다. 하나님이 아실까? 나를 아실까? 조심해야 합니다. 솔로몬 보세요. 그렇게 믿음 좋고 하나님을 잘 섬기던 사람이 수 많은 이방인 아내를 맞이하면서 신앙을 타협하고, 하나님으로부터 멀어집니다.

(2) 감정적 장애물(Emotional Obstacles)
두 번째 장애물은 감정입니다. 하나님이 나를 알고 있다는 사실을 믿지만, 자꾸 막힙니다. 언제 막힙니까? ① 고난의 현실이 깊어지고, ② 내 뜻대로 되지 않고, ③ 기도의 응답이 없게 되면 하나님이 나를 안다는 사실에 회의가 들게 됩니다. 아신다면서 이게 뭔가? 감정이 흔들리고, 안 좋습니다.

욥이 13:24에서 뭐라 합니까? ‘어찌하여 주님께서 나를 피하십니까? 어찌하여 주님께서 나를 원수로 여기십니까?’ 얼마나 답답하면 이랬겠습니까? 응답없는 기도 만큼 힘든게 어디있습니까? 오래 시간 기도해도 변하지 않는 현실 앞에서 사람들은 단순해 집니다. 왜 안주시는거야? 다른 길은 생각하지 못하고 하나님에 대한 반감과 실망으로 넘어집니다. ‘나를 아신다구요, 구라치지 마세요’. 무시할 수 없는 장애물입니다.

(3) 환경적 장애물(Circumstantial Obstacles)
하나님이 나를 아신다는 사실을 거절하게하는 세번째 장애는 환경에서 옵니다. 우리가 사는 환경은 하나님이 나를 안다는 사실을 인정하게 만드는 세상이 아닙니다.

두 가지가 환경만 말씀드릴께요. 하나는 바쁨이고, 다른 하나는 조바심입니다. 둘 다 하나님의 아심을 강하게 막는 장애물들입니다. 바쁨이 하나님의 아심을 막는 이유는 분명합니다. 사람은 바쁘다 보면 대부분은 기도와 말씀 묵상의 시간을 빼깃게 됩니다. 하나님과의 관계가 멀어지게 됩니다.

나를 가장 잘아는 분과 멀어지게 되는 것입니다. 뜻과 방향을 놓칠 수 있고, 가장 잘아는 분이 주시는 위로와 힘을 받을 수 없게 됩니다. 할 일이 없는 것보다 바쁜게 감사한 일이지만 바쁜 것 때문에 하나님을 거절하지 않도록 애써야 합니다.

두 번째 조바심도 신자들은 조심해야 합니다. 조바심은 원하는 것이 있을 때 빨리 되기를 바라는 마음입니다. 누구나 가지고 있는 마음입니다. 나쁘다고 할 수 없습니다. 하지만 조바심이 올 때 조심해야 합니다. 조바심이 커지게 되면 커질수록 하나님에 대한 신뢰가 떨어질 수 있습니다. ‘이렇게 원하는데 왜 빨리 안해 주시는 거야. 나를 안다면 이럴 수 없지’

아브라함과 사라가 조바심 때문에 약속 믿지 못하고 하갈을 통해 후손을 낳았다가 얼마나 큰 곤혹을 치룹니까? 조급함과 조바심은 하나님을 믿지 못하게 하는 복병입니다.

이 정도만 보겠습니다. 여러분들은 어떤게 막는지 모르겠습니다. 있다면 하나하나 격파해서 하나님이 나를 안다는 확신 가운데 있으면 좋겠습니다.

3.나를 아는 주님을 가졌는가?
함석헌 선생의 질문 하나 보겠습니다. ‘그대 그 사람을 가졌는가?’. 선생의 잘 알려진 시입니다. 여러 해석으로 볼 수 있지만 저는 이 번에 다시 보면서 선생이 말하는 그 사람을 ‘주님’으로 봐도 무리가 없다는 생각을 하면서 보게 됐습니다.

만리길 나서는 날
처자를 내맡기며
맘 놓고 갈만한 사람
그 사람을 그대는 가졌는가

온 세상 다 나를 버려
마음이 외로울 때에도
‘저 맘이야’하고 믿어지는
그 사람을 그대는 가졌는가

탔던 배 꺼지는 시간
구명대 서로 사양하며
‘너만은 제발 살아다오’할
그 사람을 그대는 가졌는가

불의의 사형장에서
‘다 죽여도 너희 세상 빛을 위해
저만은 살려두거라’ 일러줄
그 사람을 그대는 가졌는가

잊지 못할 이 세상을 놓고 떠나려 할 때
‘저 하나 있으니’하며
빙긋이 웃고 눈을 감을
그 사람을 그대는 가졌는가

온 세상의 찬성보다도
‘아니’하고 가만히 머리 흔들 그 한 얼굴 생각에
알뜰한 유혹을 물리치게 되는
그 사람을 그대는 가졌는가

‘그 사람을 그대는 가졌는가’. 여섯번 묻습니다. 갖기를 바라는 사람이 어떤 사람입니까? 한 마디로 하면 친구입니다. ‘자신의 어려운 상황을 다 알고, 그 모든 상황에서도 함께 하는 친구, 목숨까지도 내주는 친구가 있소’. 묻고 있는 것입니다.

먼 길 나설 때 처자를 맡길 수 있는 사람, 온 세상 다 버려도 믿을 수 있는 사람, 침몰하는 배에서 구명대를 건네주며 너만은 살아야 하는 사람, 사형장에서 저만을 살려주라고 외치는 사람, 죽음의 문턱에서도 안심하고 맡기고 떠날 수 있는 사람, 온 세상이 예라 해도 아니오를 외칠 수 있는 사람을 그대들이여, 가졌소. 우리에게 필요한 사람이고, 주님의 삶이었다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

여러분들은 나의 삶을 속속들이 알고 계시는 주님을 갖고 계십니까? 나의 슬픔을 알고, 나의 고통을 알고, 나의 눈물을 알고, 나의 불안과 두려움과 한계를 알며, 나의 수고와 기쁨과 애씀을 아는 나의 그대, 나의 친구, 나의 주님을 알고, 가지게 되기를 바라겠습니다.

‘주님이 나를 알고 있다’는 것이 신자가 갖는 최고의 보상입니다. 어떤 것보다 귀한 것을 갖고 있는 것입니다. 인생의 실패와 성공보다 더 값지고, 중요한 것이 주님이 나를 아신다는 사실입니다. 실패와 성공의 유효기간은 이 땅이지만 주님의 아심은 이 땅을 넘어 영원까지 입니다. 아멘.

하나님이 나를 안다는 놀라운 선포가 여러분들의 가슴 깊은 곳에서 매순간 뜨겁게 이해되어지고, 확신되어지기를 바라겠습니다.

Jesus’ question 2: Who am I to you – do you know me? (Psalm 139:1-12)

We’re looking at Jesus’ questions. We’re looking at the second question, the important question He asks, ‘Who do I say to you?’ and last week we looked at the questions that should precede this question.

1.Do you know me?
The Lord says, ‘Do you know me?’ But we might ask, ‘Then do you know me? We ask because if He doesn’t know, or if He does know, but only in a cursory way, our faith and belief can be empty.

How much do you know me? Do you know my pain? Do you know my tears? Do you know my complaints? Do you know me? Do you know me? As I said, the Bible says emphatically, ‘I know’. Not once, but many, many times, God the Father, through God the Son, through God the Holy Spirit, through God the Holy Spirit, gives me the sign that I know.

My sitting down and standing up, my thoughts, my every action, the very words of my tongue, I declare that wherever I go, whether it is in heaven or in hell, whether it is in darkness or in light, the Lord is with me and knows.

As the poet confesses in verse 6, this ‘knowing’ is an act of God that is so amazing and mysterious that it shows God to be God.

‘Knowing’ that ‘God knows me’ is the beginning, the foundation, of faith. When I know that God knows me, faith comes, hope comes, and love flows. Do you know where a believer’s comfort comes from? The comfort that comes from the assurance that God knows me is the best comfort of all. Knowing that God knows me gives me the strength to overcome hardships, because where else can I overcome the greatest of hardships?

The knowledge that God knows me is not to be taken lightly or taken for granted. The more deeply I feel, and the more convinced I am, that He knows me, the richer the believer’s life becomes. Verse 7. ‘Whither shall I go away from thy Spirit, and whither shall I flee from thy presence’. We live with God’s presence everywhere and at all times.

This is why the question, do you know me, is so important. My hope is that through this question we will all live in the conviction and excitement that God knows me.

2.Obstacles to conviction
When you hear that God knows you, how do you feel? Do you feel good, grateful, excited, or do you feel numb, frustrated, or overwhelmed? Do you feel excited, grateful, or overwhelmed? We should be excited and grateful that God knows us, but the reality is that we often miss the mark.

Why do we miss this precious fact? I’ve come up with a few reasons, and I hope you’ll listen.

(1) Intellectual Obstacles
The first obstacle that prevents me from believing that God knows me is intellectual. Intellectual in this context is the rejection and refusal to acknowledge God’s existence. In this system of knowledge, God knows me. I can’t accept this.

The idea that God knows me is just a wishful thinking that believers have created, like a go-stop that they’re squeezing and hitting. It’s their own judgement, their own idea that most people in secular society have. Their knowledge is blocking God, blocking them from knowing God.

The problem is us Christians. We live in the midst of a secular society that says there is no God, and we are being coloured by it. How do you get coloured? You get coloured by the values and life patterns of those who live in rejection of God. ‘There is no God’, you don’t say it, but you don’t value it either. Don’t you often go through life without the consciousness that God knows me?

The knowledge and thought systems of the God-denying world block the truth of the belief that God knows. Does God know? Does He know me? We need to be careful. Look at Solomon: a man who was so faithful and served God well compromised his faith and walked away from God when he took many Gentile wives.

(2) Emotional Obstacles
The second obstacle is emotional. I trust that God knows me, but I keep getting stuck. When do I get stuck? When (1) the reality of my suffering deepens, (2) things don’t go my way, and (3) my prayers go unanswered, I start to doubt that God knows me. If He knows me, what is this? My emotions are shaken, and it’s not good.

What does Job say in 13:24: ‘Why does the Lord avoid me? Why does the Lord regard me as an enemy?’ How frustrating. What could be harder than unanswered prayer? Faced with a reality that doesn’t change no matter how long you pray, people become simple: why don’t you answer me? They can’t think of any other way, and they stumble over their antipathy and disappointment in God. ‘You know me, don’t lie to me’. It is an obstacle that cannot be ignored.

(3) Circumstantial Obstacles
The third obstacle that causes us to reject the fact that God knows me comes from our environment. The environment we live in is not the kind of world that causes us to acknowledge that God knows me.

Let me just mention two circumstances: one is busyness and the other is impatience, both of which are strong obstacles to God’s knowing. The reason busyness blocks God’s knowledge is obvious. When we’re busy, most of the time, we cut out time for prayer and meditation on the Word. Our relationship with God grows distant.

You miss His will and direction, and you miss the comfort and strength that comes from the One who knows you best. It’s better to be busy than to have nothing to do, but we must be careful not to reject God because of our busyness.

The second kind of impatience believers must also guard against is impatience. Impatience is the desire to have something quickly when we want it. It’s something we all have. It’s not a bad thing, but we need to be careful when it comes. As impatience grows, it can lead to a lack of trust in God. ‘If you want this so badly, why won’t you do it sooner? If you know me, you can’t do this.

How much trouble did Abraham and Sarah get into when they didn’t believe the promise because of their impatience and had descendants through Hagar? Impatience and impatience are double-edged swords that keep us from trusting God.

I don’t know what’s holding you back, but I want you to defeat them one by one so that you can be confident that God knows me.

3.Do I have a Lord who knows me?
Let me ask you a question from Dr Seok-Heon Ham: ‘Have you got the one? This is a well-known poem of his. It can be interpreted in many ways, but I watched it again this time, thinking that it’s not unreasonable to see the person he is referring to as ‘the Lord’.

The day I went out on the Manli Road
I leave my wife behind
Someone I can trust
Did you have that person

The whole world has abandoned me
Even when my heart is lonely
‘That’s me’ and believed
Have you got that person

The time when the boat goes out
Lifeguards refuse each other
‘You’re the only one who’ll please come alive’
‘You only please live’

On the death row of injustice
‘Kill them all, but keep me alive
‘Keep me alive for the light of your world’
‘I’m the only one who will live’

When you’re about to leave this world you’ll never forget.
‘There’s me.
‘There’s that one’
Do you have that person

Than the approval of the whole world
‘No’ and shake your head still thinking about that one face
That one face thought
Have you got that person
(Ham Suk Heon, Have You Got That Person)

‘Did you have that person’. Six times he asks, what kind of person do you want to have? In a word, a friend. ‘A friend who knows all your difficulties, who is with you in every situation, who gives you his life. You’re asking.

Someone to whom you can entrust your wives when you go on a long journey, someone you can trust even if the whole world abandons you, someone who throws you a life raft from a sinking ship and you must live, someone who cries out from death’s door to let me live, someone you can leave in peace on death’s doorstep, someone you can say no to even if the whole world says yes, someone you can know that you are the one we need, that you are the life of the Lord.

Do you have a Lord who knows my life inside and out, who knows my sorrows, who knows my pain, who knows my tears, who knows my anxieties, my fears, my limitations, who knows my labours, my joys, my struggles, who knows you, my friend, my Lord, and I want to know and have you.

‘He knows me’ is the greatest reward a believer can have. More precious than anything else, more valuable, more important than the failures and successes of life, is the knowledge that the Lord knows me. Failures and successes have a shelf life of this earth, but the Lord’s knowledge goes beyond this earth to eternity. Amen.

May this wonderful proclamation that God knows me be passionately understood and affirmed in your heart every moment of every day.
