예수님의 질문 2: 너에게 나는 누구냐? 1 (눅9:18~20)

지난 주부터 예수님의 질문을 보고 있습니다. 무엇을 구하니?라는 첫번째 질문에서 본 것 처럼 주님의 질문에는 신앙의 삶을 살아 갈 때 놓치면 안되는 핵심 진리가 있습니다. 가볍게 볼 수 없습니다.

1. 주님의 질문: 너에게 나는 누구냐?
오늘 본문에도 중요한 질문 하나가 나옵니다. 18절과 20절에 두 번의 질문이 나오는데, 둘을 합하면 결국 이 질문입니다. ‘너희들 나 알고 있니? 내가 누구라고 생각하느냐? 오늘 제목 그대로 하면 ‘너에게 나는 누구냐’

교회와 그리스도인들이 물어야 할 가장 본질적이고, 중요한 질문입니다. 예수님은 누구신가? 사복음서와 전 신약의 말씀은 이 질문에 대한 대답이라고 해도 과언이 아닙니다.

예수님은 누구인가? 너에게 나는 누구니? 이 질문에 어떻게 대답하는 가에 따라 신앙의 삶이 달라지고, 일상의 삶이 달라집니다.

그래서 예수를 따르고자 하는 사람이라면 이 질문에 답을 하지 않으면 안됩니다. 나를 어떻게 알고 있니? 내가 누군지 알고 믿고 따르려고 하니? 이번 기회에 다시한번 확인하고 마음이 담으면 좋겠습니다.

2. 나의 질문: 주님은 나를 아시는가?
이 질문은 다음 주에 보고, 오늘은 다른 질문 하나를 먼저 보겠습니다. 잘 하지 않는 질문이지만 주님이 하신 질문과 쌍으로 해야 되는 질문입니다. 주님이 우리들에게 자신이 누구신지를 물었다면 우리도 주님을 향해 물어야 할 질문이 하나있습니다.

주님께 무슨 질문을 하고 싶으세요? 주님이 자신을 아느냐고 묻는다면 우리도 물어봐야 합니다. ‘주님은 나를 아십니까?’ 주님이 나를 모른다면 내가 주님을 안다한들 그게 무슨 의미가 있고, 그런 믿음은 얼마나 공허한 믿음이 되겠습니까? 물어봐야 합니다.

주님은 나를 아시는가? 나를 안다는 사실을 어떻게 알 수 있는가? 나를 얼마나 아시는가? 나의 고통을 아시는가? 나의 한계를 아시는가? 나의 슬픔과 나의 우울함을 아시는가? 나의 걱정을 아시는가? 불안을 아시는가? 나의 치사함과 약삭빠름을 아시는가?

뭐라 답하고 싶으세요? 주님이 나를 아는 것 같으세요? 모르는 것 같으세요. 힘든 일 겪고, 눈물 흘리다 보면 주님이 나를 안다는 주장이 공허하고, 억지 주장처럼 느껴질 때가 얼마나 많습니까? 그런데도 성경을 보면 성경은 이 사실을 양보하지 않습니다. 한번 펼쳐 보세요. 성경 곳곳에 성부께서, 성자께서, 성령께서 나를 알고 있다는 사실을 수천번 수백번 반복하면서 알려주고 있습니다. 몇 구절 가져 왔는데 한번 보시기 바랍니다.

3. 주님은 나를 아신다
① 시편139:1~3. 주님, 주님께서 나를 샅샅이 살펴보셨으니, 나를 환히 알고 계십니다. 내가 앉아 있거나 서 있거나 주님께서는 다 아십니다. 멀리서도 내 생각을 다 알고 계십니다. 내가 길을 가거나 누워있거나 주님께서는 다 살피고 계시니 내 모든 행실을 다 알고 계십니다.

피해 갈 수 없을 정도로 샅샅이 알고 계시다는 것입니다. 은폐하는 것을 좋아하는 사람에게는 지옥같은 말씀이겠지만 하나님은 우리의 일거수 일투족을 알고 계십니다.

② 삼상16:7. 사람은 겉모습만을 따라 판단하지만 나 주는 중심을 본다. 중심을 본다는 것은 나를 안다는 것입니다. 내 동기를 알고 의도를 알고 속을 아십니다. 격려가 되기도 하고, 경고가 되기도 합니다. 하나님을 속일 수는 없습니다.

③ 히브리서 4:13. ‘하나님 앞에는 아무 피조물도 숨겨진 것이 없고, 모든 것이 그의 눈 앞에 벌거숭이로 드러나 있습니다. 우리는 그의 앞에 모든 것을 드러내 놓아야 합니다’

하나님께는 숨길 수 없고, 숨겨도 소용없습니다. 다 아십니다. 잘못한게 있으면 용서를 구하고 회개하는 게 최고입니다.

④ 요10:14-15. 나는 선한 목자이다. 나는 내 양들을 알고, 내 양들은 나를 안다. 아멘.

복음서에 보면 예수님께서 사람들의 생각과 과거와 의도와, 미래까지도 알고 있는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

주님께서 중풍병자를 고쳐주십니다(마9장). 바리새인들이 이것을 보고 속으로 궁시렁 거립니다. ‘하나님을 모독하는 거다’. 하지만 주님은 그들의 생각을 간파하십니다. 9:4.’ 예수께서 그들의 생각을 아시고..’

요한복음 4장에서 사마리아 여인을 만나는데 여자의 과거와 현재 상태를 알고 계십니다. 남편이 다섯이 있었다. 지금 살고 있는 사람도 네 남편이 아니다. 어떻게 알았을까요? 주님은 뽕나무에 올라간 세관장 삭개오의 이름도 알고 부릅니다. 베드로가 부인할 것도 알고 계셨고, 가룟유다의 배신도 알고 있었습니다. 사람들의 고난과 실패와 교만과 불신과 의심과 유혹을 알고 계셨습니다.

주님은 나를 아는가?라는 질문 앞에 성경은 언제나 확고하고, 변함없습니다. ‘나를 아신다’.

물론 나를 속속들이 아는 것은 불편합니다. 여러분들은 주님이 나를 아는 것이 좋으세요? 싫으세요? 주님이 샅샅이 아는 것을 좋아하는 사람이 많을까요? 싫어하는 사람이 많을까요?

싫은 사람이 많지 않을까요? 하나님 조차도 내 사생활은 몰라야 됩니다. 아니 모른척 해주면 좋겠습니다. 힘든일이라도 생기면 ‘나를 안다면서 이게 뭡니까?’ 더 많은 반감이 튀어나옵니다.

주님이 나를 안다는 고백과 신앙은 더 이상 당연하지 않습니다. 신자들에게도 실체가 없는 종교적인 언사, 허구로 전락해 가고 있습니다.

회복해야 합니다. 주님이 나를 안다는 것을 알 때 주님이 누구인지를 알 수 있습니다. 나를 모르고, 우리들의 약함과 눈물과 고통을 모르는 주님이 우리의 주님이 되신다고 해 보십시오. 주님이 되실수도 없고 되서도 안됩니다. 주님이 나의 주, 나의 하나님이 되기 위해서는 주님은 나를 아셔야 합니다.

주님이 나를 알고, 그 사실을 마음 다해 고백하기 시작할 때 주님이 누구인지를 온전히 알 수 있습니다.

‘너에게 나는 누구냐?’ 어떻게 대답하시겠습니까? 주님이 나를 속속들이 아신다는 감동과 감격이 있을 때 주님은 나의 그리스도가 되고, 나의 메시야로 고백될 수 있습니다.

주님이 나를 알고 있다는 것을 부담으로만 여기지 말고, 적극적으로 받아야 됩니다. 주님이 나를 알고 있다는 사실에 눈을 뜨는 것이 신앙이고, 그리스도인의 삶을 살아내는 출발이고, 힘이 됩니다.

주님이 나를 알아서 불편하고, 쪽 팔리는 것 보다 주님이 나를 안다는 사실에 눈을 뜨고, 감격할 때 얻는 힘이 훨씬 더 큽니다.

4.선물
주님이 나를 알고 있다는 확신 속에 살아가는 이들이 받게 되는 선물은 참 많습니다. 두 개만 보겠습니다. 하나가 평안이고, 다른 하나는 거룩해짐입니다.

(1)평안
확신이 주는 첫번째 선물은 평안입니다. 신자에게 평안은 하나님이 나를 알고 보살펴 준다는 것을 알 때 얻게되는 마음의 평화, 마음의 안정입니다. 엄마 폼 속에서 잠든 아이같게 됩니다.

시편 121편에 주님을 아는 자가 누리는 평안이 너무 잘 나옵니다.

1.내가 산을 향하여 눈을 들리라 나의 도움이 어디서 올까 2 나의 도움은 천지를 지으신 여호와에게서로다 3 여호와께서 너를 실족하지 아니하게 하시며 너를 지키시는 이가 졸지 아니하시리로다 4 이스라엘을 지키시는 이는 졸지도 아니하시고 주무시지도 아니하시리로다 5 여호와는 너를 지키시는 이시라 여호와께서 네 오른쪽에서 네 그늘이 되시나니 6 낮의 해가 너를 상하게 하지 아니하며 밤의 달도 너를 해치지 아니하리로다 7 여호와께서 너를 지켜 모든 환난을 면하게 하시며 또 네 영혼을 지키시리로다 8 여호와께서 너의 출입을 지금부터 영원까지 지키시리로다.(시121:1~6)

이 시편의 아름다운 고백이 우리 모두의 고백이 되기를 바라겠습니다. 하나님은 우리를 지키십니다.

(2) 거룩해짐
두 번 째 선물은 거룩해짐입니다. 주님이 나를 알고 있다는 사실을 알면 말과 행동과 생각에 절제가 일어납니다. 아!. 주님이 아시지. 주님이 보시지! 연애할 때 아가씨들이 얼마나 조신합니까? 그것처럼 함부로 하지 않게 됩니다.

우리도 주님이 아는 자답게 계속 자신을 정화시켜 나갑니다. 하나님이 기뻐하는 거룩한 자의 모습이 되는 것입니다.

죄의 시작은 하나님이 모를 것이라는 착각에서 시작되고, 알아도 별 수 없을 것이라는 교만으로 깊어집니다. 죄가 주는 치명상과 해악을 막으려면 하나님이 알고 있다는 인식과 믿음이 필요합니다.

말씀 맺겠습니다.
너에게 나는 누구냐?는 주님의 질문에 답하기 전에 우리가 먼저 주님께 물어봤습니다. ‘주님은 나를 아십니까?’ 주님의 대답은 ‘안다’입니다.

주님은 저와 여러분들을 모르지 않고 아십니다. 나의 슬픔을 알고, 나의 힘듬과 나의 교만과 나의 한계 다 아십니다. 사탄은 끊임없이 속삭입니다. ‘하나님은 너 몰라. 안다는 것은 허구야. 아는데 그렇게 힘들게 하니’.

이런 속사임에 넘어가지 마시고, 안다는 쪽으로 건너 오셔서, 나를 아시고, 온전히 사랑하시는 주님을 깊게 신뢰하는 복된 삶, 살아 가십시다. 주님이 나를 아는 것이 우리의 가장 큰 힘이고, 방패고, 피난처며 요새입니다.

Jesus’ Question 2: Who Do You Say I Am? 1 (Luke 9:18-20)

We have been looking at Jesus’ questions since last week. As we saw in the first question, ‘What do you want?’, there is a core truth in His questions that we cannot miss as we live our lives of faith. They are not to be taken lightly.

1. The Lord’s question: Who am I to you?
There’s an important question in today’s text, too. It’s asked twice in verses 18 and 20, and when you put them together, it boils down to this: ‘Do you know me? Who do you think I am?’ Or, as today’s title says, ‘Who am I to you?

This is the most essential and important question for the church and Christians to ask: Who is Jesus? The words of the four gospels and the entire New Testament answer this question.

How you answer this question – who is Jesus? Who am I to you? How you answer this question will shape your life of faith and how you live your life every day.

So if you want to follow Jesus, you need to answer these questions. How do you know me? Do you know who I am, and are you willing to believe and follow me? Take this opportunity to double-check and take it to heart.

2. My question: Does the Lord know me?
We’ll look at this question next week, but today we’re going to look at another question first. It’s a question we don’t often ask, but it’s one that should be paired with the question the Lord asked. If the Lord asked us who He is, there’s one question we should ask Him.

If He asks us if He knows Himself, we should ask Him, ‘Does He know me?’ Because if He doesn’t know me, what does it matter if I say I know Him, and what an empty faith that would be?

Does the Lord know me? How do I know that He knows me? How much does He know me? Does He know my pain? Does He know my limitations? Does He know my sorrow, my depression, my anxiety, my anxiety, my pettiness, my weakness?

How many times, in the midst of hardship, in the midst of tears, does the claim that God knows you ring hollow, that it feels like a forced assertion? And yet, when you look at the Bible, the Bible does not concede this fact. Open it up. There are thousands and thousands of times throughout the Bible that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit know me. I’ve pulled out a few verses and I want you to look at them.

3. The Lord knows me
① Psalm 139:1-3 You have searched me, O Lord, You have examined me, and You know me intimately. Whether I am sitting or standing, You know me. You know my thoughts, even from a distance. Whether I am walking or lying down, You have searched me; You are aware of all my actions.

That’s a hell of a statement for those of us who like to hide, but God knows our every move.

② Man judges according to the outward appearance, but the Lord sees the heart, and to see the heart is to know me.(1Sam.16:7) He knows my motives, He knows my intentions, He knows my inward thoughts. That can be encouraging or warning; you can’t fool God.

③ Hebrews 4:13: ‘No creature is hidden from God, everything is naked and open before his eyes. We must lay everything bare before him.’

You can’t hide from God, and there’s no point in hiding – he knows everything. If we have done anything wrong, it is best to ask for forgiveness and repent.

④ John 10:14-15: I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and my sheep know me. Amen.

In the Gospels, we see that Jesus knows people’s thoughts, past, intentions, and even their future.

He heals a man with a serious illness (Matthew 9). When the Pharisees see this, they are in a tizzy. ‘This is blasphemy against God’. But the Lord sees through their thoughts. 9:4. ‘Jesus knew their thoughts…’

In John 4, He meets a Samaritan woman, and He knows her past and present condition. She had five husbands. The one you are living with now is not your husband. How does he know? The Lord also knows and calls Zacchaeus, the customs collector, by name when he climbs the mulberry tree. He knew Peter’s denial, and He knew Judas Iscariot’s betrayal. He knew their struggles, their failures, their pride, their unbelief, their doubts, their temptations.

In the face of the question, Does the Lord know me? The Bible’s answer is always steadfast, unchanging: ‘He knows me’.

Of course, knowing me inside and out is uncomfortable. Do you like it or don’t you like it? Do you think there are many people who like it or don’t like it? Do you think there are many people who don’t like it?

Wouldn’t there be many people who don’t like it? Even God shouldn’t know my private life. I’d like him to pretend he doesn’t, and when things get tough, I’m like, ‘If he knows me, what’s this?’ and more resentment comes out.

Confession and faith that the Lord knows me are no longer taken for granted; they are becoming religious rhetoric, fiction without substance, even for believers.

We need to restore it. When I know that the Lord knows me, I know who He is. Imagine a Lord who does not know me, who does not know our weaknesses, our tears, our pain, becoming our Lord. He cannot and should not be our Lord. For Him to be my Lord and my God, He must know me.

When He knows me, and I begin to confess that fact wholeheartedly, then I can fully know who He is.

How would you answer the question, ‘Who am I to you?’ When I am moved and thrilled that He knows me inside and out, then He can be my Christ, my Messiah.

The fact that the Lord knows me should not be seen as a burden, but as something to be embraced. Waking up to the fact that the Lord knows me is faith, it is the beginning of living the Christian life, it is strength.

It is far more empowering to be awakened and thrilled that God knows me than it is to be uncomfortable and embarrassed that He knows me.

4.The gift
There are many gifts that come to those who live in the confidence that the Lord knows me. Let’s look at just two: peace and sanctification.

(1) Peace
The first gift of assurance is peace. For the believer, peace is the peace of mind, the security of the heart, that comes from knowing that God knows and cares for you. It’s like a child sleeping in its mother’s arms.

Psalm 121 describes the peace of those who know the Lord so well.

1.I will lift up mine eyes unto the mountains: from whence shall my help come? 2 My help cometh from the LORD that made heaven and earth; 3 He shall not cause thee to slip: he that keepeth thee shall not slumber. 4 He that keepeth Israel shall not slumber, neither shall he sleep. 5 For the LORD is thy keeper. shall be thy shadow at thy right hand: 6 The sun of the day shall not hurt thee, neither shall the moon of the night hurt thee. 7 The LORD shall keep thee out of all thy affliction, and shall preserve thy soul. 8 The LORD shall keep thy entrance and thy exit, from this time forth and for ever. (Psalm 121:1-6)

May the beautiful confession of this psalm be ours as well: God keeps us.

(2) Sanctified
The second gift is sanctification. Knowing that the Lord knows me produces self-control in word, deed, and thought. Ah! The Lord knows; the Lord sees! You see how careful young ladies are when they are in love; they are not as careless as that.

We, too, continue to purify ourselves as the Lord knows. We become like the holy ones with whom God is pleased.

Sin begins with the illusion that God doesn’t know, and deepens with the pride that even if He did, it wouldn’t matter. It takes awareness and faith that God does know to stop the devastation and harm that sin causes.

Let me conclude.
Before we can answer the Lord’s question, ‘Who am I to you?’ we must first ask the Lord, ‘Do you know me?’ and the Lord’s answer is, ‘I know.

He knows me and you without knowing you. He knows my sorrows, He knows my struggles, He knows my pride, He knows my limitations. Satan is constantly whispering: ‘God doesn’t know you. It’s a lie that He knows you, and that’s why He gives you so much trouble.’

Don’t fall for it, come over to the side of knowing, and live a blessed life of deep trust in the Lord who knows you and loves you completely. The Lord knowing me is our greatest strength, our shield, our refuge and our fortress.
