출애굽 이야기 37: 율법: 은혜. 이정표. 도약(출19:5-6. 20:1-3)

오늘 말씀의 주제는 ‘율법’입니다. 율법은 하나님께서 출애굽한 이스라엘 백성들에게 요청하신 삶의 지침입니다. 하나님께는 이렇게 하고, 서로에게는 이렇게 해서 하나님 백성의 백성다움을 보여주라고 하는 하나님의 뜻이 담겨있는 ‘법’이 율법입니다.

20장에 보면 십계명이 나오고, 십계명을 주신 후에 십계명을 확장한 세부적인 법들이 연이어서 나오고 있습니다. 압도적인 나타나심으로 주신 법들이기에 무시하면 안되는 생명과 같은 법입니다.

지금껏 법에 눌려온 사람들인데 율법을 받으면서 어떤 생각이 들었겠습니까? ‘또 법이야!’ 알러지 반응이 있었을지도 모릅니다. 여러분들은 법에 대해 어떻게 생각하십니까? 법이 좋으십니까? 법을 신뢰하십니까?

‘법은 큰 파리는 통과시키고 작은 파리만 잡는 거미줄이다’.(발자크). 가장 큰 뭉둥이(권력)를 가진자가 자기 입맛에 따라 법을 만든다’(어거스틴). 사람들의 필요에 의해 만들어지는 법이 가진 태생적인 한계입니다.

법은 평등하지 않다는 불신이 시대마다 깊지만 악법이라도 있어야 사회가 유지되기에 법의 지배를 받아들이고 있습니다. 유전무죄, 무전유죄. 괜히 나온 말이 아닙니다.

율법은 그렇지 않습니다. 율법은 기원은 하나님입니다. 신적 권위가 있는 법입니다. 사람들의 필요에 따라 바꿀 수 없습니다. 예외없이 다 지키고, 순종해야 합니다. 순종할 때 보화같은 존재, 제사장 나라, 거룩한 백성이 되는 명예를 얻게 됩니다. 율법은 축복이고, 은혜입니다.

1.율법은 은혜
율법은 은혜입니다. 율법이 은혜인 이유는 율법을 받은 시기를 보면 금새 알 수 있습니다. 율법을 이스라엘 백성들이 언제 받습니까? 출애굽 전입니까? 출애굽 후입니까? 출애굽 후에 받습니다. 만약 출애굽 전에 받아서 율법에 순종하면 그 댓가로 출애굽하게 해서 구원을 주고, 자유를 준다. 그랬다면 율법은 은혜가 아닙니다.

하지만 하나님은 출애굽이라는 구원을 주고 나서 율법을 주셨습니다. 한 일 없고, 잘한 것 없지만 구원을 주신 후에 율법을 주셨고 그 율법에 순종하면 지금보다 더 존귀한 존재. 보화같은 존재. 사명감을 가진 존재로 만들어 주시겠다는 약속을 하시게 됩니다.

다시말하면 순종하면 구원받는다가 아니라 구원받았으니 순종하라는 것이고 그 순종으로 더 귀한 존재가 되라는 것입니다. 우리가 받은 구원과 다를바 없습니다. 우리의 구원도 선하고 의롭게 산 공로와 공적으로 구원이 주어진게 아닙니다. 부족한게 많지만 은혜로 구원하셨고, 구원한 우리가 하나님의 자녀답게 살기를 원하시는 것이 하나님의 뜻이고 사랑입니다.

율법은 아버지의 사랑같습니다. 아버지의 사랑이 무뚝뚝하고, 센 것 같지만 아버지의 사랑은 깊습니다. 율법은 자녀들을 사랑하는 아버지가 자식들을 위해 그들의 장래를 위해 지키라고 한 아버지의 속깊은 사랑의 규칙이라고 할 수 있습니다.

이 마음을 알아 순종할 때 보화같이 아름다운 존재,제사장의 사명을 감당하는 인생, 세상에 빛을 비추는 거룩한 나라가 되는 것입니다. 율법의 조항 하나하나에는 그들을 위한 은혜와 사랑이 담겨 있습니다. 구원받은 자 답게 살아보라. 구원보다 구원 후가 중요하다는 것을 보여 주신 것입니다. 율법의 겉보다 속을 보는게 중요합니다.

2.율법은 이정표
두 번째로 율법은 이정표(signpost)입니다.. 이정표는 가야 할 방향을 알려 주는 표시입니다. 따라가다 보면 목적지에 도착하게 만들어 줍니다. 율법을 주신 이유입니다

이정표가 있고, 없고는 대단히 큰 차이입니다. 캄캄한 밤, 산속입니다. 어디로 가야할지 종잡을 수가 없습니다. 그때 이정표가 나타납니다. 이 길로 가면 위험합니다.(No, this way), 이쪽으로 가세요.(Over here).

인생의 길이 어둔 산속이라면 이정표는 대단한 힘을 가지고 있습니다. 견딜 있게 하고, 위기를 넘게 만듭니다. 가야 할 길이 있기에 힘을 합쳐 이겨 나갑니다.

하나님은 지금 새로운 길을 떠나는 이스라엘 백성들에게 길을 보여 주시는 것입니다. ‘이렇게 살아라. 그러면 된다’. 삶의 방향, 삶의 목적, 해야 할 일, 해서는 안되는 일들을 율법을 통해 ‘이정표’로 주십니다. 부모 공경하라(5계명), 살인하지 마라(6계명), 간음하지 말라(7계명). 이웃에 대해 거짓 증거하지 말라(9계명). 이정표입니다.

보여 주신대로 가면 제사장 나라가 되고, 거룩한 백성이 되는데 이런 모습을 출애굽한 이스라엘 백성들에게 보고 싶으신 것입니다. 우리에게도 보고 싶어하실 것입니다. 우리도 이정표를 가지고 있습니다. 우리가 가진 이정표는 ‘말씀’입니다.

시119:105. 주님의 말씀은 내 발의 등불이요, 내 길의 빛입니다.

세상이 아무리 어둡고 암울해도 말씀은 등불되고 빛이 되기에 따라가면 길이 나옵니다. 발견되기를 원하는 수 많은 이정표가 말씀 안에 있습니다. 다른데서 헤매지 맙시다. 말씀 안에서 가야 할 길을 발견하는 기쁨과 감격, 꼭 누리게 되기를 바랍니다.

3. 율법은 도약
이렇게 이정표를 발견하고 따라갈 때 삶의 ‘도약’이 일어납니다. 율법은 도약입니다. ‘노예처럼 살지말라. 더 높은 수준의 삶을 살라. 도약하라’. 이 얘기 하는게 율법이고, 말씀입니다.

율법을 지켜야 할 규칙들의 기계적인 나열로 보면 안됩니다. 율법은 노예에서 벗어난 자유자들이 가져야 할 삶의 방식을 주신 것입니다. 자유자가 되고 새사람이 되었다면 새술은 새부대에, 이전과는 달라져야 한다는 것입니다.

(1) 배움
생각과 행동과 말 전부 도약하라는 것입니다. 도약은 어떻게 하면 일어납니까? 도약은 배움을 통해서 일어납니다. 배운다는 게 뭡니까? 보통은 모르던 것을 알게 되면 배웠다고 말하지만 배움은 ‘버림’과 ‘획득’이라고 하는 두 가지 행위가 공존할 때 배움이라고 할 수 있습니다.

새로운 것을 알게 되더라도 ‘버림’이라는 단절이 없게 되면, 반쪽 짜리 배움 밖에 될 수 없습니다. 배우고 알았는데도 변하지 않는 것은 버림의 단절을 하지 못했기 때문이고, 아직 덜 배웠기 때문입니다. 버림과 해체가 없는 반쪽의 배움으로는 도약은 일어나기 힘듭니다.몰라서 변하지 않는게 아니라 버리지 않아서 변하지 않는 것입니다. 이 함정에 빠지지 않아야 합니다.

배움을 시작할 때는 뭘 배울지 모릅니다. 무슨 일이 일어날지도 모릅니다. 하지만 배움을 통해 버릴 것을 버리고 새로운 것을 알게 될 때 이전과는 다른 삶이 펼쳐지게 되는데 이게 배움의 매력입니다. 배움은 변화와 도약을 가져오고, 도약을 통해 살아가는 방식, 살아가는 바탕과 구조가 달라집니다.

하나님이 율법을 주신 이유입니다. 지금까지는 이 사람들이 하나님과 상관없는 삶을 살았습니다. 조상의 하나님이 있고, 힘들때는 그 하나님께 탄식하면서 기도했지만 삶에는 하나님이 없었습니다.

이런 그들에게 하나님은 율법을 주시면서 그들의 삶에 하나님이 살아나게 하신 것입니다. ‘난 너희를 이집트의 종살이에서 구원해준 하나님이다. 내 앞에서 다른 신들을 섬기지 말라. 우상을 만들지 말라. 거짓 증언하지 말라. 히브리 종을 사면 6년 동안만 종살이 하게 하고 7년째 되면 아무 몸값도 받지 말고 자유의 몸이 되게 해라. 사람을 죽인 자는 반드시 사형시켜라. 실수로 죽였으면 도피하게 하라’

(2) 타당성 구조
사람들의 행동, 판단, 결정, 예배 모든 것에 하나님이 있고 하나님의 뜻이 있게 하셨습니다. 그게 당연하고, 타당한 구조로 만드신 것입니다. 지금까지는 하나님이 없는 게 당연하고 타당했지만 이제는 아닙니다. 율법이 이스라엘 백성에 준 엄청난 ‘도약’입니다. 이제 그들은 하나님이 없으면 안되는 삶을 살게 된 것입니다.

(3) 세속화
세속화는 다른 게 아닙니다. 하나님이 당연하지 않고 아무 의미가 없게 되 버린 것이 세속화입니다. 가정에도 없고, 직장에도 없고, 내 삶에 어떤 영향력을 미치지 못하는 상태가 바로 세속화입니다.

그때나 지금이나 하나님은 이런 세속화에서 당신의 백성들이 벗어나기를 원하십니다. ‘언제나 어디서나 그리스도인’. 내 모든 행동과 판단과 결정에 하나님이 임재하고, 하나님의 뜻이 스며들기를 강하게 바라시는 것입니다.

하나님이 언제나 타당하고, 당연하고, 모든 삶에 관여하면 좋겠습니다. 율법을 주고, 말씀을 주신 이유입니다.

보잘 것 없는 자들을 독수리 날개로 업어 오신 하나님은 우리도 업어 오셨습니다. 업어오신 주님은 말합니다. 말씀에 순종하라. 그 순종이 하나나님의 보물, 왕같은 제사장, 거룩한 백성으로도약시키고, 상승시켜 줄 것이다.

율법을 주신 하나님을 신뢰하고, 사랑하는 여러분의 인생이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

Exodus Story 37: Law: Grace. Milestones. The Leap (Exodus 19:5-6. 20:1-3)

The theme of today’s story is the Law. The Law is a set of guidelines for living that God asked the Israelites to follow in the Exodus. It is the “Law” that contains God’s will for them to do this to God and that to each other to show their character as God’s people.

In chapter 20, the Ten Commandments are given, followed by a series of detailed Laws that expand on the Ten Commandments. These are life-like Laws that cannot be ignored because they are given in an overwhelming manifestation.

What do you think the people were thinking when they were given the Law, because they’ve been under the Law all their lives? They might have had an allergic reaction, like, “More Laws! How do you feel about the Law, do you like the Law, do you trust the Law?

‘The law is a spider’s web that lets the big flies through but catches the little ones’ (Balzac). ‘He who has the greatest mass (power) makes laws according to his own taste’ (Augustine). This is the inherent limitation of law: it is shaped by people’s needs.

Throughout the ages, there has been a deep distrust that Laws are unequal, but we accept the rule of Law because even bad Laws are necessary to maintain society. If you have money, you are not guilty; if you don’t have money, you are guilty’). We don’t say that for nothing.

The Law is not like that. The Law has its origin in God. It is a Law with divine authority. It cannot be changed to suit people’s needs. It must be kept and obeyed without exception. And when we obey it, we have the honor of being a treasure, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation. The Law is a blessing, a grace.

1.The Law is Grace
The law is grace. The reason why the law is grace is because of when it was given. When did the Israelites receive the Law: before the Exodus or after the Exodus? If they receive it before the exodus and obey the law, then it saves them and gives them freedom. Then the law is not grace.

But God gave the law after He gave salvation, the exodus. You didn’t do anything, you didn’t do well, but after giving you salvation, he gave you the law, and if you obey the law, you are more precious than you are now. A treasure. He promises to make you a person with a mission.

In other words, it is not that if you obey, you will be saved, but that you are saved, you are to obey, and that obedience will make you more precious. It is no different from the salvation we have received. Our salvation is not given to us because we are good, righteous, or meritorious. It is God’s will and love that we are saved by grace, even though we lack much, and that He wants us to live as His children.

The law is like a father’s love. A father’s love is blunt and hard, but a father’s love is deep. The law is the rules of a father’s deep love that a father who loves his children has given them to keep for their future.

When we know and obey this heart, we become a treasured people, a life that fulfills our priestly mission, and a holy nation that shines as a light to the world. Each and every provision of the law contains grace and love for them. Live like the saved. You have shown us that salvation is more important than post-salvation. It is important to see the inside of the law rather than the outside.

2.The Law is a signpost
Second, the Law is a signpost. A signpost is a marker that tells you which way to go. If you follow it, it will lead you to your destination. This is why God gave the Law.

There is a huge difference between having a signpost and not having a signpost. It’s a dark night in the mountains. You have no idea where to go, and then a signpost appears. No, this way is dangerous, go this way, go over here.

When the road of life is a dark mountain, signposts have great power. They make it bearable, they make it through. We pull ourselves together because we know there’s a way to go.

God is showing the Israelites, who are now embarking on a new path, the way: “This is how you live, and this is how you do it. He gives them ‘signposts’ in the form of the Law – the direction of life, the purpose of life, the do’s and don’ts. Honor your parents (5th commandment), don’t murder (6th commandment), don’t commit adultery (7th commandment). Do not bear false witness against your neighbor (9th commandment).

If you do what you’re shown, you become a kingdom of priests, you become a holy nation, and that’s what God wanted to see for the Israelites in the Exodus. He wants to see it for us, too. We have signposts, too. The signpost we have is the Word.

Psalm 119:105. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

No matter how dark and bleak the world is, the Word is a lamp and a light, and if you follow it, you will find your way. There are countless signposts in the Word that are waiting to be discovered. Let’s not get lost elsewhere. The joy and excitement of discovering the way to go in the Word is something we must experience.

3. the Law is a leap
When we find and follow these signposts, we take a “leap” in our lives. The Law is a leap: “Don’t live like a slave. Live a higher standard of life. Take the leap’. That’s the Law, that’s the Word.

We shouldn’t look at the Law as a mechanical list of rules to follow. The Law gives us a way of life that free people who have been freed from slavery should have. If you are free and become a new person, new skills are for new units, and you should be different than before.

(1) Learn
It is to make a leap in thought, action, and speech. How do you make a leap? It is through learning. We usually say that we learn something when we know something we didn’t know before, but learning is a coexistence of two behaviors called ‘letting go’ and ‘acquiring’.

Even if you learn something new, if you don’t have the disconnect of letting go, it’s only a half-hearted learning. If you don’t change after learning and knowing, it’s because you haven’t made the disconnect of letting go, and you haven’t learned enough. You can’t make a leap with half-hearted learning without letting go and dismantling. You don’t change because you don’t know, you don’t change because you don’t let go.

Don’t fall into this trap. When you start learning, you don’t know what you’re going to learn. You don’t know what will happen. But when you learn, when you let go of things and learn new things, your life is never the same, and that’s the beauty of learning. Learning brings change and leaps, and leaps change the way you live, the foundation and structure of your life.

That’s why God gave the Law. Up until this point, these people had lived a life that had nothing to do with God. They had the God of their ancestors, and they prayed to that God in times of trouble, but they had no God in their lives.

So God gave them the Law to bring God into their lives: “I am the God who brought you out of slavery in Egypt. Do not serve other gods before me. Do not make idols. Do not bear false witness. If you buy a Hebrew slave, let him be your slave only for six years, and on the seventh year let him go free for no ransom. If you kill a man, put him to death; if you kill him by mistake, let him escape.

(2) Validity Structure
God made it so that there was a God and a God’s will in everything people did, judged, decided, worshipped, and so on. He made it a natural, valid structure. Up until now, it was natural and valid to be without God, but not anymore. This is the huge ‘leap’ that the Law gave to the Israelites: now they had to live without God.

(3) Secularization
Secularization is not something else; it’s when God becomes unnatural and meaningless. He is not at home, he is not at work, and he has no influence on your life.

This is the kind of secularization that God wants His people to break free from: “Christians everywhere and always. It is a strong desire for God’s presence and will to permeate my every action, judgment, and decision.

You want God to be involved in every aspect of your life in a way that is always appropriate, natural, and necessary. That’s why you gave the Law, that’s why you gave the word.

The God who has lifted up the lowly on eagle’s wings has lifted us up as well, says the Lord who has lifted us up. Obey the Word. That obedience will lift you up and make you a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a treasure for God.

May your life be one of trusting and loving the God who gave you the Law.
