놓치 않는 사랑, 막달라 마리아(요20:1~18)

1.놓치지 말아야 할 사람: 막달라 마리아
님의 침묵에서 한용운이 고백한 문장입니다. ‘온 세상 사람이 나를 사랑하지 아니할 때에 당신만이 나를 사랑하였습니다. 나는 당신을 사랑하여요. 나는 당신의 사랑을 사랑하여요'(사랑을 사랑하여요)

다 사랑하지 않는데 당신만이 나를 사랑해서 당신을 사랑하고, 나를 사랑한 그 사랑을 사랑한다고 하는 벅찬 고백입니다. 사랑이 만들어낸 사랑입니다.

오늘, 이런 사랑으로 많은 이들에게 깊은 울림을 주는 한 사람, 소개해 드리겠습니다. 잘 아는 것 같지만 숨겨진 사람이구요, 그래서 더 잘 봐야 하는 분입니다.

제목 보신 것 처럼, 이름은 ‘마리아’고, 다른 마리아와 구분하기 위해 동네 이름인 ‘막달라’를 붙여 ‘막달라 마리아’라고 하는 주님의 여제자입니다. 막달라 마리아가 주는 신앙의 도전은 귀하고 귀합니다.

제가 막달라 마리아를 묵상하면서 적어본 키워드 입니다. 치유, 감사, 변화, 헌신, 꾸준함, 용기, 의리, 사랑입니다. 하나만 가져도 대단한 것들인데 이 모든 게 막달라 마리아에게 다 보입니다.

겉으로는 훅하고 불면 꺼질것 처럼 보이는 연약한 촛불이지만 막강한 로마의 권력과 유대 당국자에 맞서 촛불을 지켜내는 대단한 사람, 막달라 마리아입니다. 한 때는 예수님의 숨겨논 연인이요, 창녀라는 오명을 받았지만 이제는 신앙이 가벼워지고, 무뎌질 때마다 놓치지 말고 봐야 할 신앙의 사람으로 빛나고 있습니다.

(1) 주님과의 만남(눅8:1~3)
막달라 마리아와 주님과의 인연은 누가복음 8장에서 시작됩니다. 일곱 귀신에 들려 몸과 마음이 피폐해진 마리아를 주님께서 치유해 주십니다. 마리아의 나이도, 마리아의 증상도 알려진바 없지만 마리아는 이 치유로 삶이 완전히 바뀝니다.

치유에 대한 감사뿐만 아니라 치유자 주님에게서 나오는 말씀과 영적 권위에 눈뜨면서 주님과 동행하기 시작합니다. 상황을 보면 정말 신실하게 섬긴 것으로 보여집니다.

‘막달라’라는 동네는 가난한 동네가 아닙니다. 짐작으로는 마리아에게도 상당한 정도의 소유가 있었던 것 같은데 그것으로 기꺼이 주님 일행을 섬깁니다. 섬기면서 기뻐했고, 주님의 선포를 들으면서 변화됩니다.

(2) 주님과 끝까지 함께 함: 십자가, 장례, 부활의 증인
마리아가 주님을 만나 치유받은 때는 주님의 공생애 초반, 갈릴리 지역에서 활동할 때입니다. 공생애 기간이 3년이라면 적어도 2년 이상을 주님과 함께 한 것인데, 그러다가 주님이 십자가에 달리시게 된 것입니다.

아시다시피 주님의 십자가 처형으로 인해 함께하던 남자 제자들은 쑥대밭이 됐습니다. 주님을 판 유다는 스스로 목숨을 끊었고, 나머지 제자들은 고양이 앞에 쥐 마냥 숨 죽여 숨어 버립니다.

하지만 일군의 여자들, 여자 제자들은 도망가지 않고 끝까지 주님과 함께 하면서 십자가의 증인, 장례식의 증인, 부활의 증인으로 부활의 소식을 전하게 됩니다.

그 중심에 우뚝 서 있는 사람이 막달라 마리아입니다. 막달라 마리아는 네 복음서 전부 언급된 유일한 사람으로 놓칠 수 없는 모든 순간의 목격자, 증인이 됩니다.

그 당시 사회가 남성 위주의 사회였기에 여성의 활약을 기록으로 남기는 것이 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 그런데도 막달라 마리아가 보여준 일관된 신실함과 뜨거움을 무시 할 수 없었기에 4복음서에 전부 기록되 있습니다.

솔로몬은 ‘사랑은 죽음 처럼 강한 것'(Love is strong as death, 아8:6)이라고 했는데 막달라 마리아도 주님에 대한 사랑이 너무 커서 죽음도 두려워하지 않고 주님과 함께할 수 있었던 것입니다. 세 번이나 주님을 부인했던 베드로와 숨기 바빴던 남자 제자들과 비교해 보면 놀라울 뿐입니다. 남자들, 분발하십시다.

마리아는 살기 등등한 십자가 현장에서도 도망치지 않고 눈 똑바로 뜨고 주님의 죽으심을 목격합니다. (마27:55~56, 막15:40, 눅23:49, 요19:25). 십자가에서 내려진 뒤에도 시신이 있는 곳까지 따라가 확인합니다.(마27:61. 막15:47. 눅23:55~56) 그리고 안식일이 끝난 후, 확인해 둔 무덤으로 가 예수님의 시신에 향료를 발라 주려고 길을 떠납니다. 그리고 그 무덤에서 부활을 목격하고, 부활의 증인이 됩니다.(마28:1~10. 막16:1~11. 눅24:1~11. 요20:1~18)

(3) 부활하신 무덤에서(요20:1~18)
오늘 읽은 요한복음 본문에 마리아의 모습이 잘 나옵니다. 마리아의 모습을 보면서 느끼시는 게 뭡니까? 함께 욌던 베드로와 사도 요한으로 추정되는 다른 제자 한 명은 주님이 안 보이니까 미련 없이 돌아갑니다.(10절)

하지만 마리아는 돌아가지 않고 남습니다. 그리고 스치는 불길한 생각에 참았던 울음이 터집니다. 예수님의 시신을 누가 가져갔을까? 사람들이 예수님의 시신을 훼손했다는 생각에 눈물이 앞을 가립니다.

2.놓치 않는 사랑
사랑이 만든 울림이고, 사랑이 만든 울음입니다. 주님을 놓아 주기 싫은 ‘놓치 않는 사랑’입니다. 마리아의 ‘놓치 않는 사랑’에 주님도 ‘놓아주지 않는 사랑’으로 응답하십시다.

‘왜 우니, 누구를 찾니'(15절). 동산지기인줄 알고 착각한 마리아, 들리는 소리에 말합니다. ‘당신이 옮겼다면 어디 두었는지 알려 주십시오. 제가 가서 주님을 모시겠습니다’.

그때 소리가 들립니다. ‘마리아야’. 주님께서 자신을 만지사 고쳐 주셨던 이후로 한 번도 떠나지 않고 따랐던 마리아에게 주님은 이름으로 부르시고, 부활한 자신의 모습을 처음으로 보여 주십니다. 그리고 명합니다. ‘가서 나를 보았다 말하라'(18절)

절망 속에서도 한번 잡은 손 놓치 않고 끝까지 잡고 있는 이에게 주님은 부활의 첫 번째 증인이라는 명예와 영광을 선물하신 것입니다. 희망이 무너져도 사랑이 무너지지 않으면 무너지지 않은 사랑에서 새로운 희망과 새로운 믿음이 솟아난다는 것, 보면 좋겠습니다.

3.놓치지 않아야 할 것: “주님 사랑합니다”
마리아에게 있었던 것은 사랑입니다. 피폐된 몸과 영혼을 치유하고, 말씀과 권능으로 새로운 삶을 보여주셨던 이에 대한 존중과 영성이 끝까지 ‘놓치 않는 사랑’으로 나타나게 된 것입니다.

도망친 제자들과 마리아를 구분 짓는 결정적인 차이는 주님에 대한 사랑입니다. 사랑이 있는 자는 남고, 사랑이 없는 자는 사라집니다.

놓치 않는 사랑을 가지고 부활의 영광을 누렸던 마리아가 우리에게 주는 도전은 다른게 아닙니다. ‘여러분들도 주님을 사랑하세요’. 오늘 이 한 단어 기억하십시다. ‘주님을 사랑함’

우리를 살리고, 존귀하게 만드는 한 문장입니다. 주님을 정말 사랑하면 어떻게 될까요? 마리아 처럼 됩니다. 흔든다고 흔들리지 않고 흔들림 없이 갑니다.

신앙은 주님을 사랑하는 터전 위에서 자리를 잡을 때 진실하고, 흔들리지 않습니다.

무뎌져 가는 신앙, 한없이 가벼워진 신앙을 치료하는 치료제는 주님을 사랑하는 것 밖에 없습니다. 주님의 사랑, 주님의 은혜, 주님이 열어주신 세계를 마음에 담을 때 무뎌지고, 가벼워진 신앙에서 벗어날 수 있습니다.

무뎌진 신앙이 뭡니까? 하나님에 대한 감각과 감성이 없어진 신앙입니다. 삶에 하나님이 없습니다. 가벼워진 신앙은 겉만 신경쓰는 신앙이고, 편리한 것만 찾아가는 나만의 신앙입니다. 위선이 들어가고, 녹슬기 쉬운 신앙입니다.

아차하는 순간 가지게 되는 신앙입니다. 이렇게 신앙이 무뎌지고, 가벼워져 보이면, 마음 다해 주님을 사랑하라는 Sign이 온 것으로 보면 됩니다.

어거스틴의 고백록에 나오는 문장 하나 읽어 드리겠습니다.

‘이렇게 늦게서야 나는 주님을 사랑합니다. 어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 항상 새롭고 아름다우신 주여, 이렇게 늦게서야 나는 주님을 사랑하게 되었습니다! 주님은 내 안에 계셨건만 나는 주님을 떠나 있었습니다. 내 안에서 나를 사랑하시는 주님을 찾기 위하여 나는 더러운 세상을 방황하고 다녔습니다. 주님은 언제든지 나와 함께 계셨지만 나는 주님과 함께 있지 못하였습니다. 당신 안에 있지 않으면 존재하지도 못했을 세상의 지극히 작은 것들이 나를 붙들고 주님에게서 멀어지도록 유혹했습니다. 주님은 나를 부르셨고 크게 외치셔서 들을 수 없었던 나의 귀를 열어 주셨습니다. 당신의 아름다운 향내음을 나의 가슴으로 들이키고 난 후에 나는 더욱 당신을 사모하게 되었습니다. 주의 영을 맛본 이후 나는 한층 주의 말씀에 주렸고 목이 말랐습니다. 주께서 나를 만지셨고 나는 당신의 평안으로 불타 올랐습니다”

‘늦은 봄이라도 꽃은 핀다’는 말처럼 어기스틴은 늦게 발견한 주님에 대한 사랑을 감사함으로 고백하고 있습니다.

주님이 가장 듣고 싶어하는 말이 뭡니까? ‘주님 저 성공했습니다. 저 주님 위해 손해 봤습니다. 저 참았어요’. 훌륭하고 잘 한 것이지만 주님이 더 듣고 싶어하는 말이 있습니다.

부활하신 주님이 실패한 베드로와 독대하십니다. 독대한 자리에서 세 번 질문하십니다. 요한의 아들 시몬아, 네가 나를 사랑하느냐?(15~17). 집요하게 물으십니다. 실패한 베드로에게 듣고 싶은 말은 ‘너 나 사랑하니’ 이거 하나였습니다.

주님을 사랑하지 못했기에 실패했다면, 주님을 사랑하면 회복할 수 있기에 묻고 묻고 또 물어서 ‘주님을 사랑하는 자’로 세우기 원하셨던 것입니다.

사랑해야 사람이 보이고, 사랑해야 부활이 보입니다. 막달라 마리아, 주님을 사랑한 사람입니다. 사랑했기에 무모했고, 사랑했기에 영광을 받았습니다.

오늘 아침, 우리도 물어 보십시다. ‘나는 주님을 사랑하는가?’. ‘예. 주님, 주님을 사랑합니다. 그 사랑 놓치지 않겠습니다’. 이 한 고백 기어이 해내는 여러분의 인생이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

오늘 아침, 주님을 사랑한 자가 누리는 변화와 평안과 믿음과 섬김과 희망이 있기를 바라겠습니다.

Mary Magdalene, a love that never lets go (Jn 20:1-18)

1.The One You Shouldn’t Miss: Mary Magdalene
In The Silence of Love, Han Yong Un confessed: ‘When the whole world did not love me, you alone loved me. I love you, and I love your love’ (Love for Love)

It’s a daunting confession, saying that I love you because you loved me when no one else loved me, and that I love the love that loved me. It is a love made by love.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to a person who has touched so many people with this kind of love, someone you may think you know, but who is hidden, and you need to take a better look at.

As you can see from the title, her name is Mary, and she is the handmaiden of the Lord, called “Mary Magdalene” after the name of her neighborhood to distinguish her from the other Marys. Like Mary, the mother of the Lord, whom we saw last week, Mary Magdalene’s faith challenge is precious.

These are the keywords I wrote down as I meditated on Mary Magdalene. Healing, gratitude, transformation, commitment, steadfastness, courage, loyalty, and love. These are all great things to have, and I see them all in Mary Magdalene.

A fragile candle that looks like it could be snuffed out with a hook and a blow, but Mary Magdalene is a remarkable person who defends it against the mighty Roman and Jewish authorities. Once Jesus’ secret admirer, once stigmatized as a prostitute, she now shines as a person of faith to be watched whenever our faith grows lighter and duller.

(1) The encounter with the Lord (Luke 8:1-3)
Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the Lord begins in Luke 8. The Lord heals Mary, who has been possessed by seven demons and is physically and mentally exhausted. We don’t know Mary’s age or what her condition was, but her life is changed forever by this healing.

Not only is she grateful for the healing, but she begins to walk with the Lord, opening her eyes to the words and spiritual authority that come from the Lord, the healer. The context suggests that she has served faithfully.

The neighborhood of “Magdala” is not a poor neighborhood; I’m guessing that Mary had a fair amount of possessions, and with that she willingly serves the Lord. She rejoices as she serves, and is transformed as she hears the Lord’s proclamation.

(2) Staying with the Lord to the end: Witness to the cross, burial, and resurrection
Mary’s encounter with the Lord and healing is early in the Lord’s public ministry, when he was active in Galilee. If the symbiosis lasted three years, then she was with the Lord for at least two years, and then the Lord went to the cross.

As you know, the crucifixion of the Lord tears the male disciples who were with Him apart. Judas, the one who sold Him, takes his own life, and the rest of the disciples scurry away like mice before a cat.

But a group of women, the female disciples, don’t run away, they stay with the Lord until the end, witnesses to the cross, witnesses to the funeral, and witnesses to the resurrection.

And standing at the center of that is Mary Magdalene. She’s the only person mentioned in all four gospels, and she’s an eyewitness, a witness to every moment that can’t be missed.

It’s not always easy to document a woman’s exploits, given how male-dominated society was at the time, but the consistent faithfulness and fervor that Mary Magdalene displayed was impossible to ignore, and is recorded in all four gospels.

Solomon said, “Love is strong as death” (Song of Solomon 8:6), and Mary Magdalene’s love for the Lord was so great that she was able to be with Him without fear of death. It’s amazing to compare Peter, who denied the Lord three times, to the male disciples who were busy hiding. Men, wake up.

Mary does not flee from the scene of the crucifixion, whether alive or dead, but stays with her eyes open and witnesses the Lord’s death (Mt 27:55-56; Mk 15:40; Lk 23:49; Jn 19:25). After he is taken down from the cross, he follows the body to where it is and identifies it (Mt. 27:61. Mk. 15:47. Lk. 23:55-56). After the Sabbath is over, he goes to the tomb he has identified to anoint Jesus’ body with spices. He witnesses the resurrection and becomes a witness to the resurrection (Mt. 28:1-10. Mk. 16:1-11. Lk. 24:1-11. Jn. 20:1-18).

(3) At the resurrected tomb (John 20:1-18)
In today’s reading from John’s Gospel, we see a lot of Mary. What do you notice about Mary’s appearance? Peter and one of the other disciples, who was with them, presumably the apostle John, do not see the Lord and return home (v. 10).

But Mary doesn’t go back, she stays behind, and she bursts into tears at the ominous thought that crosses her mind. Who could have taken Jesus’ body? Tears well up in her eyes as she realizes that people have desecrated Jesus’ body.

2.Love doesn’t let go
It is a cry made by love, a cry made by love. It’s a love that doesn’t want to let go of the Lord. The Lord responds to Mary’s ‘love that won’t let go’ with ‘love that won’t let go’.

“Why are you weeping, and whom do you seek” (v. 15). Mary, mistaking the sound for the gardeners, says: ‘If you have taken it away, tell me where you have put it. I will come and take it to the Lord’.

Then she hears a voice. ‘Mary. To Mary, who has never left and followed him since the day he touched and healed her, the Lord calls her by name, gives her the first glimpse of his risen form, and commands: ‘Go and tell her that you have seen me’ (v. 18).

To the one who, in the midst of despair, never lets go of the hand he once grasped and holds on to it to the end, the Lord gives the honor and glory of being the first witness to the resurrection. It is good to see that when hope crumbles, if love does not crumble, new hope and new faith springs up from the unbroken love.

3.Don’t miss: “I love you, Lord”
What Mary had was love. Her respect and spirituality for the one who had healed her tattered body and soul, who had shown her new life through his word and power, was manifested in a love that didn’t let go.

The decisive difference that separates Mary from the disciples who fled is her love for the Lord. Those who have love remain; those who do not have love flee.

Mary, who basked in the glory of the resurrection with a love that never let go, has no other challenge for us: ‘You too, love the Lord’. Let’s remember this one word today: love the Lord.

It’s a sentence that saves us, that honors us. What happens when we really love the Lord? We become like Mary. You don’t get shaken, you don’t get stirred.

Faith is genuine and unwavering when it is grounded in loving the Lord.

The only cure for a dulled faith, a faith that’s become infinitely light, is to love the Lord. When we take His love, His grace, and the world He’s opened up to us into our hearts, we can come out of that dulled, light faith.

What is a dulled faith? It’s a faith that has lost its sense and sensitivity to God; it has no God in its life. A lightened faith is a faith that cares only about the outside, a faith that is my own, looking for what is convenient. It is a faith that is prone to hypocrisy and rust.

When your faith becomes dull and light, it is a sign that you need to love the Lord with all your heart.

Let me read you a sentence from Augustine’s Confessions.

“Even at this late date I love the Lord. O Lord, who art the same yesterday, today, and forever, always new and beautiful, it is only at this late date that I have come to love Thee! Thou hast been in me, but I have been away from Thee. I wandered through the filthy world in search of You who loved me in myself; You were always with me, but I was not with You; the smallest things of the world, which would not even exist if not in You, held me and tempted me away from You; You called me and shouted loudly, opening my ears that could not hear; after inhaling Your beautiful fragrance into my heart, I longed for You even more. After tasting your spirit, I hungered and thirsted for your word even more; you touched me and I burned with your peace.”

As the saying goes, “Even late in the spring, flowers bloom,” and Augustine is gratefully confessing his late-discovered love for the Lord.

What do you think the Lord wants to hear most, ‘Lord I succeeded, I lost for You, I endured’. That’s great and well done, but there is something more the Lord wants to hear.

The risen Lord is alone with the failed Peter. He asks him three times in his solitude. “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” (15-17). He is insistent. The only thing he wants to hear from Peter, who has failed, is this: Do you love me?

If he had failed because he had failed to love the Lord, he wanted to ask and ask and ask and ask to establish him as one who loved the Lord because loving the Lord would restore him.

When you love, you see the person, and when you love, you see the resurrection. Mary Magdalene, a person who loved the Lord. She was reckless because she loved, and she was honored because she loved.

This morning, let us ask ourselves, too: ‘Do I love the Lord? ‘Yes. I love you, Lord, and I will not let go of that love’. May this one confession be your life’s work.

This morning, may you have the transformation, the peace, the faith, the service, the hope that comes to those who love the Lord.
