출애굽 이야기 24: 하나님이 인도하신다(출13:17~22)

1. 
‘인도’란 말은 (어떤) 목적하는 곳으로 이끌어 주시는 하나님의 의도와 행동을 뜻하는 성경의 용어입니다. 사48:17. ‘너희의 구속자시요 이스라엘의 거룩하신 이이신 여호와께서 이르시되 나는 네게 유익하도록 가르치고 너를 마땅히 행할 길로 인도하는 네 하나님 여호와라’. 인도하심에 대한 선포입니다. 시48:14. ‘하나님은 영원히 우리 하나님이시니 그가 우리를 죽을 때까지 인도하시리로다’. 인도하심에 대한 고백입니다. 

불신자는 하지 못하는 신자들만의 고백입니다. 인도하심을 고백하기 위한 세 가지 조건이 있습니다. 첫째. 내 인생에 의지를 가지고 개입하시는 인격적이면서 동시에 인격을 넘어서는 초월적인 하나님을 믿는 사람, 둘째, 내 주장과 원함을 내려놓고 하나님의 뜻을 받는 사람, 세째. 합력하여 선을 이루시는 하나님을 신뢰하는 사람이 하나님의 인도하심을 고백할 수 있습니다.

신앙 생활의 중심은 분명합니다. 하나님의 뜻을 묻고, 하나님의 인도하심을 따르는 것입니다. 하나님을 신뢰하고, 공경하는 사람만이 ‘인도하심’을 소원하고, 인도하심에 수긍할 수 있습니다.

이런 말이 있습니다. ‘한 사람을 이해하기까지는 한 톤의 소금을 함께 핥아야 한다’. 사람에 대한 이해와 관계가 얼마나 어려우면 이런 말까지 나왔겠습니까? 소금 한 톤이면 엄청난 양입니다. 그 많은 양의 소금을 단만 쓴맛 느끼면서 함께 핥을 정도가 되야 이해할 수 있다는 것입니다, 

하나님과의 관계(이해)도 다르지 않을 것입니다. 하나님을 이해하는 것도 한 톤의 소금을 핥아 먹는 것만큼 만만치 않습니다. 희노애락의 인생을 하나님과 함께 겪어낼 때, 그때 비로서 ‘아, 여기까지 인도하셨구나’, ‘다 하나님의 이끄심이었구나’는 고백을 할 수 있습니다.

2. 본문
본문은 출애굽한 이스라엘 백성들의 첫번째 탈출 장면입니다. 애굽을 떠나기는 했지만 마음 놓을 수 있는 상황이 아닙니다. 사방에 애굽 군대가 진치고 있고, 바로의 마음 언제 변할지 알 수 없습니다. 쫓기는 자는 불안한 법, 2백만이나 되는 사람들이 두려운 발걸음을 재촉하고 있습니다. 누군가의 ‘인도’가 절실한 때입니다. 물론 모세가 지도자이니 모세가 인도해야 합니다. 하지만 오늘 본문을 보면 탈출의 긴박한 상황을 주도하는 것은 모세가 아니라 하나님이라는 것에 촛점을 맞추고 있습니다.

17절, 18절, 21절에 ‘인도한다’는 말이 나오는데 인도함의 주체, 주어는 모세가 아니라 하나님입니다. ‘하나님이 인도하신다’. 어떻게 인도하십니까? 두 가지 인도 방법이 나옵니다. 이스라엘 사람들 입장에서 보면 하나는 마음에 들지 않는 인도고, 하나는 마음에 드는 인도입니다. 마음에 들지 않는 인도가 첫 번째 인도고, 마음에 드는 인도는 두 번째 인도입니다. 마음에 들지 않는 인도는 먼 길 돌아가게 한 것이고, 마음에 든 인도는 구름 기둥과 불기둥의 인도입니다.

(1) 첫 번째 인도: 먼 길로 인도하심
17절에 첫 번째 인도하심이 나옵니다. ‘바로가 백성을 보낸 후에 블레셋 사람의 땅의 길은 가까울지라도 하나님이 그들을 그길로 인도하지 아니하셨으니 이는 하나님이 말씀하시기를 이 백성이 전쟁을 하게 되면 마음을 돌이켜 애굽으로 돌아갈까 하셨음이라’ 가까운 길이 있지만 먼 길로 돌아가게 하십니다. 힘들게 왜 돌아갑니까? 이유를 모르면 입 나오기 딱 좋은 상황입니다.

인도는 하나님이 인도하시는 것이고,하나님이 인도하신다면 죽이되든 밥이 되든 하나님의 인도를 신뢰하고 따라가는 것이 최고인데, 인도하심이 내 생각과 다르고, 힘이 들면 인도하심에 반감이 생기고, 기분이 좋지 않습니다. 그럼에도 하나님은 내 뜻대로, 내가 원하는 방향으로만 인도하시지 않습니다. 우리는 하나님의 이런 인도를 부정적인 인도하심, ’negative guidence’라는 말로 부릅니다. 반대로, 내가 원하는 대로, 잘되는 쪽으로 인도하는 것은 긍정적인 인도하심, ‘positive guidence’라고 부릅니다.

편의상 나눈 구분이지만 인도하심에 분명히 있는 모습입니다. 인도하심에는 이 두 가지가 다 있습니다. 둘 중에 어떤 쪽이 더 좋은 인도입니까? 더 좋은 쪽은 없습니다. 둘 다 하나님의 뜻 가운데 있는 똑같은 인도하심입니다. 

지금 하나님이 이스라엘 백성들을 멀고 힘든 광야길로 인도하시는 것은 힘이 드는 인도지만 그 인도가 최고의 인도라는 판단이 드셨기에 인도하시는 것입니다. 17절에서 분명하게 밝혀주고 있지만 남의 나라 땅을 2백만이나 되는 사람들이 가로 질러 가다가는 무슨 봉변을 당할지 모릅니다. 전쟁이 일어나면 애굽으로 돌아가겠다는 말이 나올 수 있는 상황입니다. 14:11에 보면 바로가 쫒아오는 것을 보고 이스라엘 사람들이 난동을 피우는 장면이 나옵니다. ‘모세, 애굽에도 죽을 데가 많은데 광야로 끌고나와 죽게하는 이유가 뭐요’ 이런 반응을 보면 충분히 그럴 수 있는 사람입니다. 

신앙인들이 하나님의 인도하심을 놓치는 상황이 ‘부정적’으로 인도할 때입니다. 부정이라는 단어가 들어 있어서 하나님의 인도하심을 잘 보지 못합니다. 인도가 아니라 막는 것 같고, 평안이 아니라 불안하게 만드는 것처럼 보여집니다. 힘이듭니다. 속도 상합니다. 힘이 드는게 사실입니다. 속도 상합니다. 부정적인 인도하심을 잘못 다루면 평생을 아파합니다. 어떻게 해야 하는가? 믿음에서 나오는 단단한 뚝심으로 견뎌 나가는 수 밖에 없습니다.

(2) 두 번째 인도: 구름과 불 기둥으로 인도하심
이제 하나님은 힘들어 하는 이들의 마음을 읽었는지 두 번째 장면을 연출하십니다.20절. 광야 끝 ‘에담’이라는 곳에 장막을 치는 순간,  낮에는 구름 기둥, 밤에는 환한 불기둥이 나타나, 떠나지 않고 그들과 함께 하기 시작합니다. 구름 기둥과 불기둥의 실체가 뭔지는 알 수 없습니다. 추측하건데 기둥은 하나일 것입니다. 하나의 기둥이 낮에는 구름의 형태로, 밤에는 불의 형태로 나타나 그들의 갈 길을 인도하는 안내자의 역할을 하고 있습니다. 

40년 동안 계속 그들과 함께 합니다. 성경에는 이 기둥을 본 이스라엘 사람들의 반응이 나오지 않습니다. 하지만 이들은 광야 한 가운데서 펼쳐지는 장엄한 광경을 보면서 자신들과 함께하고 있는 하나님의 ‘인도하심과 임재하심’을 느끼지 않을 수 없었을 것입니다. 

피난 길 나선 이들 아닙니까? 불안과 두려움으로 가득했던 이들이 이 기둥들을 보면서 마음의 안정을 찾기 시작했을 것입니다. 하나님이 보호하시는구나. 인도하시는구나. 앞에서는 부정적인 인도하심으로 속상했는데 구름기둥과 불기둥의 좋은 인도하심, 긍정적인 인도하심을 보면서는 인도하시는 이에 대한 믿음이 생겼을 것입니다. 사막의 잠 못 이루는 밤, 보름달 처럼  환하게 비치고 있는 불기둥을 보면서 기도했을 것입니다. ‘인도하소서. 여호와여’. 아이가 보채고 있다면 자장가라도 조용히 불러줄 여유가 생겼을 것입니다. 

지금도 이런 징표가 있으면 얼마나 좋을까요? 하나님의 함께하심과 인도하심이 느껴지는 것.불안하고, 힘들 때 바라보면 안심이 되는 나의 구름기둥과 불기둥. 있을까요? 없을까요? 있습니까? 없습니까? 우리에게는 이 징표가 있습니다. 아니 구름기둥과 불 기둥보다 더 확실한 사인을 가지고 있습니다. 예수님의 십자가가 구름기둥, 불기둥입니다. 잘 보지 못해서 그렇지 십자가를 잘보면 우리는 하나님의 사랑과 은혜와 인도하심을 알수 있습니다.

십자가에는 무엇을 해야 할지, 어떻게 해야 할지 가르쳐주는 선명한 하나님의 인도하심이 있습니다. 실패할 때 십자가를 보십시오. 가장 큰 실패에서 일어나신 주님의 인도하심이 있습니다. 미움이 가득할 때도 십자가는 우리를 인도합니다. 자존심이 상할 때도, 거절 당할 때도, 불안할 때도, 화평이 필요할 때도 십자가는 우리가 가야 할 길로 인도하십니다. 더 이상 어떤 사인이 필요합니까? ‘하나님이 인도하신다’. 이 놀라운 신앙의 명제. 신앙의 고백이 앞으로 더 선명하게 보이게 되기를 바라겠습니다.

두 가지 묵상하겠습니다. 첫 번째 묵상은 내 뜻만 생각하지 말자. 두 번째 묵상은 인도함을 받는 자 답게 살자. 하나님의 인도하심을 신뢰하는 자가 가져야 할 삶의 모습입니다. 

3.묵상
(1) 내 뜻만 생각하지 말자
하나님이 인도하시는데 어떻게 내 뜻만 주장하고, 날 따라 오라 할 수 있겠습니까? 당연한 사실인데 이게 잘 안됩니다. 고칠 수 있을까요? 고쳐야 합니다. 안 고치면 내 뜻과 하나님 뜻이 다를 때마다 불편해집니다. 지금은 어느 시대 보다 자신이라는 주체가 최고의 가치를 가지는 시대입니다. 하나님이라도 내 인생에 끼어드는 것을 싫어합니다. 온통 내가 내가.. 너도 드물고, 하나님은 더 드물어요.

하지만 아무리 자신이 중요해도 별 수 없습니다. 하나님의 인도하심을 바란다면 하나님의 뜻을 알아야 하고, 그 뜻에 따르겠다는 신앙적인 순종과 결단이 필요합니다. 따라야 하는 이유는 하나님의 판단과 지혜가 나보다 깊고, 높기 때문입니다. 롬11:33 깊도다 하나님의 지혜와 지식의 풍성함이여 그의 판단은 헤아리지 못할 것이며 그의 길은 찾지 못할 것이로다’

매 순간의 결정은 결국 내가 하는 것입니다. 하지만 최선의 결정을 위해 하나님이 주신 수단을 가지고 찾아가야 합니다. 어떤 결정은 분명하게 보이겠지만, 어떤 결정은 안개와 같아서 결단을 내리기가 힘들 수 있습니다. 그래도 그런 숙고의 과정이 계속 될 때 훨씬 더 하나님의 뜻에 근접한 결정을 해서 하나님의 인도하심을 받을 수 있습니다. 

하나님은 우리가 로봇 처럼 되기를 원하지 않기에 말씀 안에 뜻을 심어 놓으셨습니다. 그 안에서 발견하기 원하십니다. 또 성령을 통해 기도 중에 우리의 마음을 움직이게 하시고, 막기도 하십니다. 그리고 내가 알지 못하는 하나님의 섭리적 인도하심이 있습니다. 이 세 가지 입니다. 말씀, 기도, 하나님의 섭리적 인도가 하나님의 뜻과 인도하심이 결정되는 지점입니다. 내 뜻만 보지말고, 하나님의 뜻과 인도하심을 더 잘 분별하면 좋겠습니다.

(2) 인도함을 받는 자답게 살자. 
두 번째 묵상입니다. 하나님이 인도하시고, 인도하심을 바란다면 인도함을 받는 자답게 살아야 합니다. 하나님의 인도하심을 정말 마음에 품으면 어떻게 될까요? 내 마음 안에 구름 기둥과 불 기둥이 두둥실 떠 있다면 약하지만은 않을 것입니다.담대하고, 당당하지 않겠습니까?
용감하기도 할 것입니다. 그렇게 살면 좋겠습니다.

‘가장 원대한 비현실을 붙드는 사람만이 가장 위대한 현실을 창조해 낸다'(아감벤, 행간, p.18) 하나님의 인도가 주는 비현실이 있고, 위대함이 있습니다.우리는 하나님의 인도하심을 받는 하나님의 사람들입니다. 이 은혜, 특권, 자랑스러움을 놓치지 말고 살아 가십시다.

God Guides (Exodus 13:17-22)

1.
‘Guidance’ is a biblical term for God’s intentions and actions that lead to (some) destination. Isa. 48:17. ‘Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, I am the LORD your God, who teaches you for your good and guides you in the way you should go’. This is a declaration of guidance. Psalm 48:14. ‘God is our God forever; he will lead us even unto death’. A confession of guidance.

This is a confession that only believers can make, not unbelievers. There are three conditions for a confession of guidance. First. I believe in a personal, yet transcendent God who willfully intervenes in my life; second, I lay down my claims and desires and receive God’s will; and third. A person who trusts in God to work together for good.

The center of the faith life is clear. Only those who trust and honor God can ask for “guidance” and say yes to guidance.

There is a saying: ‘It takes licking a ton of salt together to understand a person’. How difficult is it to understand and relate to a person that they would say something like this? A ton of salt is a huge amount of salt, and you have to lick that much salt together, feeling the sweetness and bitterness, before you can understand it,

Our relationship (understanding) with God will be no different. Understanding God is also not as easy as licking a ton of salt. When we go through life’s ups and downs with God, that’s when we can say, ‘Oh, God has led me to this point’, ‘It was all God’s leading’.

2.
This is the first exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. They’re out of Egypt, but it’s not a peaceful situation: the Egyptian army is advancing on all sides, and there’s no telling when Pharaoh might change his mind. The chased are uneasy, and two million people are pacing fearfully. It’s a time when someone’s “guidance” is desperately needed. Of course, Moses is the leader, so he must lead, but our text focuses on the fact that it is God, not Moses, who is in control of the urgency of the exodus.

In verses 17, 18, and 21, we see the word ‘leads’, but the subject, the one who leads, is God, not Moses. ‘God leads’. How do you lead? Two ways of leading come up, one that the Israelites don’t like, and one that they like. The one you don’t like is the first one, and the one you like is the second one. The one you don’t like is the one that makes you go back a long way, and the one you like is the one with the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire.

(1) The First Guidance: Leading to a Long Way
The first guidance comes in verse 17: “After Pharaoh sent the people away, the way of the land of the Philistines was near, but God did not lead them in it, because God said, “If this people goes to war, they will turn their hearts and return to Egypt.” There is a short way, but God makes them go back a long way. Why go back a long way? If you don’t know why, it’s a good situation to talk.

Guidance is God’s guidance, and if God is leading, it is best to trust and follow God’s guidance, whether it is to kill or to eat, but if the guidance is different from what I think, if it is hard, I resist the guidance, and I feel bad. Nevertheless, God does not lead only according to my will and in the direction I want. We call this kind of ‘negative guidance’. Conversely, when God guides me in the direction of what I want and what is good for me, we call it ‘positive guidance’.

It’s a convenient distinction, but it’s a clear picture of guidance. Guidance is both of these things. Is one better than the other? It’s not better than the other; it’s the same guidance in the will of God.

Right now, God is leading the Israelites through a long and difficult wilderness journey. He’s leading them because He’s determined that it’s the best way to go. Verse 17 makes it clear, but you don’t know what kind of uprising you’re going to get when you’re two million people crossing into another country’s land. If there’s a war, they could say they’re going back to Egypt. In 14:11, we see the Israelites in an uproar when they see Pharaoh coming after them, and the reaction is, “Moses, why are you dragging us out into the wilderness to die when there are plenty of places to die in Egypt,” and that’s a reasonable reaction.

A situation where believers miss God’s leading is when they are led into “negativity. It’s hard to see God’s leading because it has the word “negative” in it. It seems to block, not guide, and it seems to unsettle, not bring peace. It’s exhausting. It slows you down. It’s hard. It slows you down. Mishandling negative guidance hurts for a lifetime. What can you do? You can only endure it with the fortitude that comes from faith.

(2) Second guidance: Guidance by a pillar of cloud and fire.
Now God reads the hearts of the struggling people and produces a second scene, verse 20. The moment they pitch their tents at the end of the wilderness, in a place called Edam, a pillar of cloud by day and a bright pillar of fire by night appears and begins to stay with them, never leaving them. We don’t know what the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire are, but if we had to guess, we’d say it’s a single pillar, appearing in the form of a cloud by day and fire by night, acting as a guide to direct their path.

It stays with them for 40 years. The Bible doesn’t tell us the reaction of the Israelites when they see this pillar, but as they watch the majestic sight unfold in the middle of the wilderness, they can’t help but feel God’s “guidance and presence” with them.

They must have been full of anxiety and fear, and as they saw these pillars, they began to feel reassured: God is protecting, God is guiding. They must have been upset by the negative guidance earlier, and as they saw the good guidance, the positive guidance, of the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire, they must have had faith in the one who is guiding. On that sleepless night in the desert, as they saw the pillar of fire shining brightly like the full moon, they must have prayed: ‘Lead us. Jehovah’. If you had a child sleeping with you, you might have taken the time to quietly sing a lullaby.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a sign like this now? A sense of God’s presence and guidance.My pillar of cloud and fire that I can look to when I’m anxious, when I’m struggling, and feel reassured. Do we have them or not? Are there or are there not? We have these signs. No, we have a more tangible sign than a pillar of cloud and fire. The cross of Jesus is the pillar of cloud and fire. When we look at the cross, we see God’s love, grace, and guidance.

The cross is a clear sign of God’s guidance that tells us what to do and how to do it. When you fail, look at the cross. There is the guidance of the Lord who rose from the greatest failure. The cross guides us even when we are full of hate. When our pride is bruised, when we’re rejected, when we’re insecure, when we need to be reconciled, the cross leads us to the path we need to take. What more sign do we need? ‘God leads’. What an amazing statement of faith. I hope you will see this statement of faith more clearly in the days ahead.

Let me leave you with two reflections: the first is not to think only of my own will. The second is to live as those who are led. This is how a person who trusts in God’s guidance should live.

3.Meditation
(1) Don’t think only of my will
How can I insist on my own will and say, “Follow me,” when God is leading? It’s obvious, but it’s not working. Can I fix it? I have to fix it. If we don’t, we’re going to get uncomfortable every time my will is different from God’s will. Now, more than ever, you are your own boss. I don’t want anyone else in my life, not even God. It’s all about me, and you’re rare, and God is even rarer.

But no matter how important you think you are, it doesn’t matter. If you want God’s guidance, you need to know God’s will, and you need to make a faithful obedience and decision to follow it. You need to follow because God’s judgment and wisdom are deeper and higher than yours. Romans 11:33 ‘For the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God is unsearchable, and his ways are unsearchable.’

The decision in each moment is ultimately mine to make, but I must go to God with the tools He has given me to make the best decision. Some decisions will seem obvious, others will be like a fog, making it difficult to make a decision, but when that process of deliberation continues, I can make a decision that is much closer to God’s will and be guided by Him.

God doesn’t want us to be robots, so He’s planted His will in His Word, and He wants us to find it in there; He moves our hearts in prayer through the Holy Spirit, and He also stops us; and then there’s the providential guidance of God that I’m not aware of. These are the three things. The Word, prayer, and God’s providential guidance are where God’s will and guidance are determined. I wish I could discern God’s will and guidance better, instead of just looking at my own will.

(2) Live as one who is being led.
The second reflection. If we want God to lead, if we want to be led, we must live as those who are led. What would happen if we really wanted God to lead? If you had a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire hovering in your heart, you wouldn’t be weak.You would be bold, you would be confident.
You would be brave, too. I hope you live that way.

‘Only those who hold on to the grandest unreality create the greatest reality’ (Agamben, Stanze, p.18).There is unreality, and there is greatness in God’s guidance.We are God’s people, guided by God. Let’s live this grace, privilege, and pride.
