출애굽 이야기 21: 작은 빛 하나라도(출10:21~29)

1. 어둠과 빛
오늘은 9 번째 재앙입니다.출애굽 열번의 재앙 가운데 재앙의 강도로 보면 10번째 재앙이 가장 쎄고, 그 다음으로 쎈 재앙이 오늘 보는 9번째 재앙입니다. 애굽 전체가 암흑으로 변합니다. 해가 뜨지 않았는지, 환하다가 어두워졌는지 모르지만 빛이 사라져 버립니다. 잠시 그럴 줄 알았는데 하루가 지나도 태양 빛이 보이지를 않습니다. 이틀이 지나도 마찬가지입니다.

이미 엄청난 재앙으로 피폐한 상태인데 이번에는 빛이 사라져 버립니다. 흑암 속에서 무슨 생각을 했을까요? 세상이 이대로 끝나는 것인가? 무슨 일이 벌어지려고 세상이 암흑 천지인가?3일 만에 끝나지만 공포 가운데 있었을 것입니다. 그리고 소문이 돌기 시작합니다.‘노예들의 땅인 고센 지역에는 어둠이 없다’.설마! 믿기 힘든 소문을 들으면서 그들의 불안은 더 커집니다.

빛을 주관하는 태양신 Ra와 그의 아들을 자처하는 바로가 지배하는 곳에 빛이 사라지고 어둠만 가득합니다. 태양신을 주신(主神)으로 믿는 이집트 사람들에게는 충격적인 일이 일어난 것입니다. 빛의 신이 어둠 앞에 굴복한 것이나 마찬가지입니다. 하지만 여호와를 신으로 섬기는 노예들의 땅에서는 환한 빛이 비추고 있습니다. 지배자의 땅은 어둠이고, 노예들의 땅은 빛입니다. 밤 없이 3일 동안 빛이 있었는지, 밤과 낮이 바뀌면서 빛이 있었는지는 모르겠지만, 애굽 땅에 어둠이 계속 되는 동안 유대인들의 거주지, 고센 땅은 함께 어두워지지 않고 빛 가운데 있게 됩니다.

여기서 중요한 것은 빛과 어둠하나님의 주권 아래 있다는 것입니다. 하나님은 어둠 가운데도 있고, 빛 가운데도 있습니다. 이 사실을 아는 것이 중요합니다. 창조의 순서는 어둠에서 빛이었습니다. 하지만 이번에는 빛에서 어둠입니다. ‘창조의 역전’이고, ‘탈 창조’가 일어나고 있습니다. 창조와 탈창조, 전부 하나님의 주권과 임재와 권능으로 일어난 일입니다.

이제 애굽 사람들은 빛의 사라짐을 보면서 바로 처럼 ‘그런 신, 나는 모른다’ 하지 말아야 하고, 이스라엘 사람들은 애굽 처럼 어두워 지지 않은 자신들의 땅을 보면서 조상들에게 약속하신 자신들의 하나님이 어떤 하나님인지 제대로 봐야 합니다. 우리도 보는 게 있어야 합니다. 오래전에 일어난 성경의 사건이지만 이 사건을 통해서 보기를 원하는 하나님의 메시지를 제대로 받아야 합니다.

두 가지 보려고 합니다. 1.’어둠’에도 하나님은 있다. 2.’빛’은 하나님이 주신다. 두 가지 묵상하면서 우리의 인생 가운데 있는 어둠과 빛, 어떤 상황에서도 하나님과 끈질기게 동행하는 참 신앙의 삶이 이루어지기를 기대하면서 오늘 말씀 전하겠습니다.

2. 묵상
(1) ‘어둠’에도 하나님은 있다.
첫 번째 묵상입니다. ‘어둠’에도 하나님은 있다. 마음에 담아야 할 신앙의 원리입니다. 어둠은 밤이고, 재난이고, 고난입니다. 힘든 때인 동시에 죄와 악이 지배하기 쉬운 때입니다.

조용필씨가 노래한 것 처럼’웃고 있어도 눈물이 나는'(그 겨울의 찻집) 힘든 때입니다. 어둠이 없으면 좋겠지만 세상은 어둠이 있고, 어둠이 깊습니다. 나쁜 놈들이 망해야 되는데 망하는 게 아니라 되레 더 잘 될 정도로 어둠의 권세는 강합니다. 속상하고 실망스럽습니다.어떻게 하면 좋겠습니까? 같이 악해 지고, 같이 어두워지면 마음이 편해질까요? 그렇지 않습니다. 사탄은 어둠으로 우리를 망가트리려고 하지만 솔로몬이 기도한 것처럼 ‘하나님이 어둠 가운데 계심’(왕상8:12)을 믿고 더 힘내서 살아야 합니다.

물리적으로 보면 하나님은 어둠을 물리치지 않고 어둠을 품으십니다. 빛은 어둠을 품고 나타난 하나님의 창조입니다. 하나님은 빛과 어둠의 공존으로 하루의 날을 창조하셨습니다. 하루는 빛만 있지 않고, 어둠도 있습니다. 빛과 어둠이 함께해서 하루가 완성되는 것입니다. 우리의 인생도 다르지 않습니다. 빛과 어둠은 공존해야 합니다. 빛만 있어도 안되고, 어둠만 있어도 안됩니다. 하나님은 내가 겪는 어둠이 어디서 왔던 어둠 속에 하나님이 계시니, 하나님과 함께 어둠을 이겨 나가기를 원하십니다. 어둠은 빛이 도착하면 사라집니다.

어둠이 힘들고 불편하지만 어둠이 올 때 우리가 해야 할 일은 분명합니다. 어둠에 쉽게 무너지지 않는 것입니다. 마틴 루터 킹 목사가 한 말입니다.‘오직 어둠 속에만 별을 볼 수 있다’.어둠에 무너지지 않겠다는 것입니다. 별은 환하면 보지 못합니다. 바탕이 어둠일 때만 별은 볼 수 있습니다. 하나님이 별이라면 하나님도 어둠 가운데 있는 사람이 훨씬 더 선명하게 볼 수 있습니다.어둠이 오면 어둠으로 좌절하기 전에 어둠 속에 계시고, 어둠을 지배하시는 하나님을 보면서 하나님과 함께 어둠을 ‘찢어내서’ 빛이 들어오게 만들어야 합니다.

어둠 속에서 할 일은 어둠을 찢어 빛을 들이는 일입니다. 어둠을 찢는 방법 알고 계십니까? 제일 먼저 찢을 게 나, 자신입니다. 내가 어둠일 때가 많기에 먼저 나를 찢어 ‘어둠의 공장’인 내가 무너져야 합니다. 자신을 지울 때 빛이 들어올 수 있습니다. 어둠이 오면, 어둠에 지지말고 어떻게든 어둠을 찢어, 빛이 들게 해야 합니다. 어둠 속에서 씨앗이 자라 싹을 틔우는 것처럼, 어둠은 별을 볼 수 있는 절호의 기회입니다. 놓치지 않으면 좋겠습니다. 하나님은 어둠 속에 계시고, 어둠 속에서 빛을 구할 때 빛을 주십니다.

(2) ‘빛’은 하나님이 주신다.
두 번째 묵상입니다. ‘빛’은 하나님이 주신다. 빛은 내가 만들지 않고 하나님이 주십니다. 하나님이 주시는 빛이 어둠을 밝게 만듭니다. 하나님이 주시는 빛은 다른게 아닙니다. 희망이고, 용기고, 격려고, 선함이고, 하나님의 인도하심입니다. 이런 빛으로 어둠을 헤쳐가게 하십니다.

고센 땅, 이스라엘 사람들이 자신들의 땅에만 빛이 들어오는 것을 보면서 용기와 희망을 가졌던 것 처럼, 하나님은 동일한 빛을 우리들에게도 주십니다. 고센 땅에 빛을 주시는 하나님과 우리에게 빛을 주시는 하나님은 같은 하나님입니다. 하여, 빛이 필요하면 빛을 주시는 하나님께 가야 합니다. ‘하나님은 빛이시라’(요일1:5) 요한 사도의 고백처럼 하나님은 빛이기에 빛을 주십니다.

감사하게도 하나님은 이미 우리에게 빛을 주셨습니다. 빛되신 하나님의 형상대로 지음 받은 우리는 이미 빛입니다. 외모, 인종, 가문, 재산, 성취, 직업, 업적 상관없이 빛입니다. 주님이 갈릴리 언덕에서 무지랭이 같은 사람들에게 첫 설교를 하면서 그들을 뭐라고 불렀습니까? ‘너희는 세상의 빛이다. 너희 빛을 사람들에게 비추라’(마5:12. 14)

주님께서 정신나가서 이런 말을 하셨겠습니까? 사람들에게 어필해서 세력을 모으려고한 사탕 발림의 말도 아닙니다. 정말 그들 한 사람, 한 사람이 하나님의 형상으로 지음받은 빛처럼 존귀한 사람들이기에 하신 말씀입니다. 그 사람들 중 어떤 사람도 사는 게 힘들어서 어둠 가운데 있는 것을 바라지 않으셨기에 그들 안에 있는 빛을 가르쳐 주셨던 것입니다. ‘너희는 빛이다. 어둠 속에 있지 마라. 어둠을 이겨내라’. 그 사람들만 빛이기겠습니까? 우리도 빛입니다. 꺼뜨리지도 말고, 어둡게 만들지도 않아야 합니다.

잴 수만 있다면 내 빛의 밝기가 어느 정도인지 재보고 싶습니다. 10이 최고 밝기라면 몇이나 될까요? 밝으면 좋겠습니다. 어둡게 만드는 것들이 너무 많습니다. 억울함, 분노, 우울, 상처, 질투, 증오, 걱정, 비교, 열등의식, 무기력.. 이런 것들이 쌓이면 장사 없습니다. 어두워집니다. 얼굴에 웃음기가 사라지고, 말에 가시가 돋습니다. ‘내가 빛’이라는 소리를 들을 때 헛웃음만 나옵니다.

어떻게 어둠을 이길 수 있을까요? 성경의 메시지는 분명합니다. 어둠을 이기려면 첫째, 주님을 믿어라. 둘째, 믿는자 답게 살라.

요12:46입니다. ‘나는 빛으로서 이 세상에 왔다. 그러므로 누구든지 나를 믿는 사람은 어둠 속에서 살지 않을 것이다’

빛으로 오신 주님을 영접하여 주님이 주시는 생명과 부활의 빛을 믿는 사람은 어둠이 커도 어둠의 장막을 걷어 낼 수 있습니다. 어둠은 주님 안에 있을 때 이길 수 있습니다.

엡5:8입니다.8.’너희가 전에는 어둠이더니 이제는 주 안에서 빛이라 빛의 자녀들 처럼 행하라.9.빛의 열매는 모든 착함과 의로움과 진실함에 있느니라. 11.너희는 열매 없는 어둠의 일에 참여하지 말고 도리어 책망하라’

어둠은 빛의 자녀답게 살때 꼬리를 내립니다. 빛의 열매로 들고 있는 게 착함과 의로움과 진실함입니다. 이 세 가지가 어둠을 이기게 하는 가장 강력한 무기입니다. 어둠은 이 세 가지가 없으면 옵니다. 착하지 않고, 의롭지 않고, 진실하지 않으면 어둠은 만들어집니다. 그래서 바울이 말하는 겁니다. 이런 어둠의 일에 참여하지 말라.

‘착함’은 양심에 어긋나지 않는 것입니다.‘의로움’은 기준을 나와 세상이 아닌 하나님께 맞추는 것입니다.‘진실’은 거짓이 없는 것입니다. 순간의 이익과 승리와 모면을 위해 거짓말을 하지 않는 것입니다. 세 가지가 있으면 밝음이 오고, 이 세 가지가 없으면 어둠이 옵니다.

어둠에는 내가 만드는 어둠이 있는데 내가 만드는 어둠의 대부분은 착함과 의로움과 진실함이 없을 때 만들어 집니다. 지금 우리에게 있는 어둠은 많은 경우 이 세가지가 없어서 오는 어둠입니다. 개인의 어둠도, 사회의 어둠도 동일합니다. 양심은 개에게 줘버리고, 서슴없이 거짓을 말하면서, 수단 방법을 가리지 않고 하는 모든 것은 어둠으로 나타나게 되 있습니다.

오늘 말씀 제목이 ‘작은 빛 하나라도’ 이렇게 되 있습니다. 어둠이 오고, 어둠이 가득하더라도 작은 빛의 힘을 믿고, 작은 빛 하나라도 더 비쳐서 어둠을 밝히자는 것입니다. 세상이 어둡다고 같이 어두워지면 안됩니다. 고센 땅에 빛을 비춰주신 것처럼 하나님은 우리에게도 빛을 주셨고, 빛의 자녀들 처럼 살라고 도전하십니다. 하나님이 주신 빛, 더 환하게 받아서 어둔 세상 밝게 만들면 좋겠습니다.

시139:12입니다. 주님 앞에서는 어둠도 어둠이 아니며, 밤도 대낮처럼 밝으니, 주님 앞에서는 어둠과 빛이 다같습니다. 주님 앞에서는 어둠이 힘을 쓰지 못합니다. 아멘.

Exodus Story 21: Even a Little Light (Exodus 10:21-29)

1. Darkness and Light
Today is the 9th plague.Of the ten plagues of the Exodus, the 10th plague is the most severe in terms of intensity, and the next most severe is the 9th plague we see today. All of Egypt is plunged into darkness. I don’t know if the sun didn’t rise, or if it was bright and then dark, but the light is gone. You think it’s just for a little while, but then a day goes by and you don’t see the light of the sun, and then two days go by, and so on.

You’re already devastated, and now the light is gone. What did you think in the darkness? Is this the end of the world? Is the world going to be plunged into darkness.It’s over in three days, but they must have been in a state of panic. And then a rumor begins to circulate: ‘There is no darkness in the region of Goshen, the land of the slaves’.Their anxiety grows as they hear the unbelievable rumor.

In a place ruled by Ra, the sun god who presides over light, and Baro, his son, there is no light and only darkness. For the Egyptians, who believe in the sun god as their primary deity, this is a shocking development: the god of light has succumbed to darkness. But in the land of the slaves, whose god is Jehovah, a bright light is shining. The land of the rulers is darkness; the land of the slaves is light. I don’t know if there was light for three days without night, or if there was light as night and day changed, but while darkness continues in the land of Egypt, the land of Goshen, the dwelling place of the Jews, is in light, not darkness.

The important thing here is that light and darkness are under the sovereignty of God. God is in the darkness and God is in the light. It’s important to know this. The order of creation was darkness to light, but this time it’s light to darkness. There’s a “reversal of creation,” a “de-creation” happening. Creation and decreation, all by the sovereignty, presence, and power of God.

Now the Egyptians shouldn’t look at the disappearance of the light and say, like Pharaoh, “Such a God, I don’t know,” and the Israelites should look at their land, which hasn’t been darkened like Egypt, and see what kind of God their God promised to their ancestors is. We need to see something too. It’s a biblical event that happened a long time ago, but we need to get the message from God that he wants us to see through this event.

We want to see two things 1. there is a God in the darkness. 2. the light comes from God. As we reflect on these two things, I’m hoping that we’ll be able to see the darkness and the light in our lives, and that we’ll be able to live a life of true faith that steadfastly walks with God no matter what.

2. Meditation
(1) There is God in the ‘darkness’.
This is the first meditation. There is God even in the ‘darkness’. This is a principle of faith that should be kept in mind. Darkness is night, disaster, and hardship. It is a time of hardship and a time when sin and evil are easy to dominate.

It is a time when, as Mr. Choi young-pil sang, “even if you are smiling, there are tears in your eyes” (That Winter’s Teahouse). I wish there was no darkness, but there is darkness in the world, and it is deep. The power of darkness is so strong that the bad guys should be ruined, but instead of being ruined, they are made better. It’s frustrating and disappointing.What should we do, be evil together, be dark together, would that make us feel better? No. Satan tries to destroy us with darkness, but as Solomon prayed, “God is in the darkness” (1 Kings 8:12), and we must be stronger.

Physically speaking, God does not defeat darkness, but embraces it. Light is God’s creation out of darkness. God created the day as a coexistence of light and darkness. A day is not only light, but also darkness. Our lives are no different. Light and darkness must coexist; it cannot be all light, and it cannot be all darkness. God wants me to walk through the darkness with God because God is in the darkness, no matter where it comes from. The darkness is gone when the light arrives.

As hard and uncomfortable as the darkness is, what we need to do when it comes is clear. It’s not to let the darkness break us. In the words of the Reverend Martin Luther King, “Only in the darkness can you see the stars.” It’s about not letting the darkness break you. You can’t see the stars when it’s bright. You can only see the stars when the ground is dark. If God is a star, then God can be seen much more clearly by those who are in darkness.When darkness comes, before we get frustrated with the darkness, we should look at God, who is in the darkness, who controls the darkness, and together with God, we should ‘tear’ the darkness to make the light come in.

Who is tearing the darkness
Little by little.
Light is breaking through.
The darkness I tear away.

Your job in the darkness is to tear it apart and let the light in. Do you know how to tear the darkness? The first thing to tear is me, myself. Since I am often the darkness, I must first tear myself apart, breaking down my “darkness factory.” When you erase yourself, the light can come in. When the darkness comes, don’t let it defeat you, but somehow tear it apart so that the light can come in. Just like a seed grows and sprouts in the darkness, the darkness is a golden opportunity to see the stars. God is in the darkness, and when we ask for light in the darkness, He gives it to us.

(2) “Light” is given by God.
The second reflection is that “light” is given by God. I don’t create light, God does. God’s light makes the darkness brighter. The light that God gives is not something else: it is hope, it is courage, it is encouragement, it is goodness, it is God’s guidance. It is this light that leads us through the darkness.

Just as the Israelites in the land of Goshen had courage and hope as they watched the light shine on their land, God gives us the same light. The God who gives light to the land of Goshen and the God who gives light to us is the same God. So, when we need light, we go to the God who gives light, because God is light, as the Apostle John confesses, “God is light” (1 John 1:5).

Thankfully, we are already light because we are made in the image of God, who is light to us. No matter what we look like, our race, our family, our wealth, our accomplishments, our profession, or our achievements, we are light. What did the Lord call them when he preached his first sermon to a group of seemingly ignorant people in the hills of Galilee: ‘You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before men” (Matthew 5:12. 14).

Do you think He was out of His mind when He said this? It wasn’t some candy-coated way of appealing to them to rally the troops. It was really because they were precious, each and every one of them, made in the image of God, like light. He didn’t want any of them to be in darkness because life was hard for them, so He taught them the light that was in them] = ‘You are light. Do not stay in the darkness. Overcome the darkness’. They are not the only light, we are also light. Don’t extinguish it, don’t make it dark.

If I could measure it, I’d like to see how bright my light is. I hope it’s bright. There are so many things that can dim it: resentment, anger, depression, hurt, jealousy, hatred, worry, comparison, inferiority complex, lethargy… When these things pile up, there’s no business. It gets dark. The smiles disappear from our faces, our words turn to thorns, and when we hear the words ‘I am the light’, all we get is a sneer.

 Can you overcome darkness in your own strength? The message of the Bible is clear. To overcome darkness, first, believe in the Lord, and second, live like a believer.

John 12:46: “I have come into the world as the light, so that whoever believes in me will not live in darkness”

Those who receive the Lord who came as light and believe in the light of life and resurrection that He offers can pull back the veil of darkness, no matter how great the darkness. Darkness can be overcome when you are in the Lord.

Eph. 5:8: ‘For ye were once darkness, but now are light in the Lord: walk as children of light.9.For the fruit of the light is in every good deed, in righteousness, in truthfulness.11.Be ye not partakers of the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.’

Darkness rears its ugly head when we live as children of light. The fruits of the light are goodness, righteousness, and truthfulness. These are the three most powerful weapons against the darkness. Darkness comes when you don’t have those three things. If you’re not good, if you’re not righteous, if you’re not truthful, then darkness is created. That’s why Paul says, “Don’t be partakers of these works of darkness.

“Good” is not going against your conscience; “righteous” is setting your standards on God, not on me or the world; “truthful” is not lying for the sake of momentary gain, victory, or cover. If you have these three things, you have light; if you don’t have these three things, you have darkness.

There is darkness that I create, and much of the darkness I create is created in the absence of goodness, righteousness, and truthfulness. The darkness that we have now, in many cases, is the darkness that comes from the absence of these three things. The darkness of the individual, the darkness of society. Throwing your conscience to the dogs, lying without hesitation, doing whatever it takes, all of these things manifest as darkness.

The title of today’s message is “Even a Little Light”. When the darkness comes, when the darkness is full, believe in the power of a little light and believe in the power of one small light to lighten the darkness. Just because the world is dark doesn’t mean we have to go dark with it. God has given us light and challenges us to live as children of light. Let’s take the light that God has given us and make it brighter, so that we can make the dark world brighter.

Psalm 139:12. For in the sight of the Lord darkness is not darkness, and the night is as bright as the day; in the sight of the Lord darkness and light are the same; in the sight of the Lord darkness is powerless. Amen.
