출애굽 이야기 17: 건너가야 한다(출7:1~7)

1. 건너가기

시골 작은 대안학교에서 아침마다 학생들이 외치는 구호(다짐의 말) 입니다.
나는 건너가기를 멈추지 않습니다.
나는 탁월함을 추구하며
나보다 더 나은 나를 꿈꿉니다.

학생들에게 필요한 좋은 다짐입니다. ‘건너가기를 멈추지 않겠다’는 말이 짠하게 다가 왔습니다. 마음 먹은 대로 꿈을 펼치면서 살면 좋겠지만 얼마나 많은 것들이 막아 서겠습니까? 눈물도 나고, 화도 나고, 답답하고… 짠합니다. 하지만 그런 순간이 와도 ‘건너가기를 멈추지 않겠다’. 다짐합니다. 그렇게 되면 좋겠습니다.

여기서 ‘건너간다’는 것은 비유입니다. 과거가 발목을 잡고 놔주지 않습니다. 현재도 만만치 않게 힘듭니다. 미래는 암울하기만 합니다. 하지만, 그래도 주저앉아 있지 않고 새롭게 시작해 보겠다. ‘건너간다’는 것입니다. 건너지 않으면 멈춥니다. 멈추면 막아서는 것들에 속수무책 끌려 다닐 수 밖에 없습니다. 힘들어도 마음 잡고 ‘건너야’ 합니다. 건너면 생각지도 못했던 일들이 펼쳐지게 됩니다.

우리도 아이들 처럼 외쳐야 합니다. ‘주님, 막는 게 많고, 낙심 가득하지만 다시 일어나 건너가겠습니다’ 오늘 말씀 제목처럼 우리도 매 순간 ‘건너야 합니다’

2. 신비와 저항: 건너가게 하는 것.
오늘 7장 초반부 읽었습니다. 그동안 봤던 혼란이 아직 남아 있는 상태입니다. 모세도 힘들고, 백성들도 힘듭니다. 출애굽은 더 이상 진전되지 못하고 중단된 상태입니다. 홍해도 건너고, 광야도 건너야 하는데 애굽에서 주저 앉아 있습니다. 7장은 이렇게 무언가에 가로 막혀건너가지 못하고 있는 사람들의 얘기입니다.

건너지 못하고 멈춘 사람들이 누구입니까? 모세, 아론, 이스라엘 백성들 4백만. 엄청난 사람들이 ‘건너지’ 못하고 멈춰 있습니다. ‘건너기’는 커녕 폭발 직전입니다. 상황을 통제 할 수 있는 ‘감정’과 ‘안목’과 ‘지혜’가 절실한 때입니다. 7장은 이런 민감한 때 하나님이 주신 말씀입니다. 모세에게 주신 말씀이지만 이스라엘 공동체 전부에게 하신 말씀입니다. 한마디로 하면 그렇게 ‘남탓’ 하면서 볼품 없게 있지 말고 ‘건너가라’. ‘계획된 일 해내라’
어떤 얘기하는지 한번 흩어 보십시오.

1절. 모세가 말 못해서 못간다고 하니까 어떻게 해 주신다고 하십니까? ‘신’처럼 군림하던 바로가 무너지고 바로가 너를 ‘신’처럼 여기도록 만들겠다. 이렇게되면 더 이상 겁먹을 필요가 없습니다. 3절.4절에서는 더 알 수 없는 말을 하십니다. 바로를 더 악하게 만들어서 절대로 너희들들의 말을 듣지 않게 하겠다. 더 악해지만 출애굽은 힘들어 지는데 바로를 더 악하게 만들겠다는 것입니다. 바로가 극도로 악해지면 재앙으로 쳐서 항복을 받아 내겠다는 것입니다.

그러니 모세 너도 다시 일어나고, 이스라엘 백성들도 일어나 ‘건너가서’ ‘자유자들이 되라’, 이 말씀하시는 것입니다. 말씀하시는 하나님의 의도는 분명합니다. 듣고 받아들여 ‘건너가라’는 것입니다.

믿어야 합니까?
무시해야 합니까?

믿으려면 두 단어가 필요합니다. 하나는 ‘신비’고, 다른 하나는 저항입니다. 건너가기 위해 필요한 두 단어입니다. 신비는 하나님을 신뢰하는 것이고, 저항은 하나님을 신뢰하는 데서 나오는 힘입니다. 나는 다 알 수 없지만 하나님의 이끄심과 사랑과 주권을 믿는 것. 신비입니다. 눈에 보여서 믿는 것도 아니고, 상황이 좋아서 믿는 것도 아닙니다. 하나님이니까 믿는 것입니다.

신비하지요. 하나님의 신비를 인정하고 받아들일 때 하나님이 체험되고, 하나님의 신실하심과 사랑이 느껴집니다. 이 신비한 하나님 인정이 저항을 만들어냅니다. 하나님의 신비 속에, 신비한 은혜 속에 사람은 강해집니다. 신비와 저항, 하나님과 용기. 지금 이 사람들에게 필요한 두 가지입니다.

이런 말이 있습니다. ‘모순처럼 보이지만 인간의 가능성은 무한하다. 인간의 불가능성도 무한하다. 이 양자 사이에 그의 고향이 있다’ (Gerog Simmel) 사람은 가능성도 무한하고,불가능성도 무한합니다. 이 둘 사이를 왔다갔다 합니다. 신자는 불가능성보다 가능성이 더 큰 사람들입니다. 나는 불가능한 게 많지만 하나님의 가능성이 크기에 하나님의 신비를 품고 가능에 저항하면 건널 갈 수 있게 됩니다. 신비도 없고, 저항도 없으면 불가능한 무한만 열릴뿐 출애굽도, 홍해도 건널 수 없습니다.

(1) 신비는 그리스도인들이 하나님을 인정하는 방식입니다. 다 알 수 없지만 신실하신 하나님이 이끄시고, 주관하신다는 양보할 수 없는 의식을 마음에 품고 용기있게’ 살아가는 자들이 신비주의자 그리스도인입니다. 신비는 유물론적 세상을 향해 신앙인들이 던지는 가장 강한 저항입니다. 신비를 통해 하나님과 하나님의 세계로 깊게 들어갈 수 있습니다. 믿음은 신비를 받아 들이는 자에게 오는 이상하고, 신비한 선물입니다.

고후5:7의 고백처럼 신자는 보는 것으로만 살지 않고 믿음으로 사는 신비한 사람들입니다.신비가 죽으면 안됩니다. 하나님이 만들어 내는 신비에 눈을 떠야 하나님을 향하게 됩니다. 하나님은 신비하게도 지금도 말씀하시고, 인도하십니다. 눈을 크게 뜨고 보십시다. 신실한 하나님의 인도하심과 다스리심이 보일 때 막힘에 무너지지 않고 ‘건너갈’ 수 있습니다. 하나님 없이 세상과 내 뜻만 고집하면 ‘건너갈 수 있는’ 길과 힘을 놓치게 됩니다. 하나님의 신비를 보는 자가 일어 설 수 있습니다.

(2) 신비가 강해지면 저항도 강해집니다. 저항은 하나님이 있는 자가 잘 합니다. 신비한 하나님을 체험할 때 하나님은 저항 할 수 있는 최고의 능력을 주십니다. 그리고 하나님에게서 나오는 저항은 저항이 선하고, 착합니다. 무너질 때 마다 선한 저항을 가지고 저항하면 건너갑니다

건너가지 못하게 막는 세력들은 약하지 않습니다. 5가지 대표적인 세력이 있습니다. 절망, 두려움, 낙심, 세상, 불의. 모세와 이스라엘 백성들이 겪고 있는 문제도 여기에 다 들어 있습니다. 하나님 없이 여기에 빠지면 그대로 무너집니다. 출애굽도, 홍해도 건널 수 없습니다. 하나님의 신실하심을 마음에 품고 저항해야 건널 수 있습니다.

내가 바로를 너의 신이 되게 하겠다. 아멘. 아론을 통해 너의 말 못함을 해결하겠다. 아멘. 바로가 지금보다 더 악해 지겠지만 걱정하지 마라. 내가 그런 것이다. 반드시 그를 굴복시킬 것이다. 아멘. 신비합니다. 신비는 저항할 힘을 줍니다.

다니엘과 세 친구가 보여준 모습은 언제봐도 흥분됩니다. 포로로 잡혀간 사람들 아닙니까? 시키는대로 해야 합니다. 위기가 닥칩니다. ‘왕이 내린 음식을 먹어라’. 거역할 수 없는데 먹지 않겠다고 맞섭니다. 무대뽀로 맞서지 않고 열흘 동안 그렇게할테니 왕의 음식을 먹은 자들과 자신들을 비교해 보고 결정해 달라. 요청합니다. 누가 더 모양새가 좋았습니까? 다니엘과 세 친구의 모양새가 좋게 나옵니다.

더 큰 위기가 닥칩니다. 이번에는 왕의 금 신상에 절하라는 것입니다. 건너 갈 수 없을 것 같은 위기입니다. 하지만 하나님을 신뢰하고, 하나님의 주권을 믿는 이 친구들은 저항합니다. 어떻게 저항합니까? ‘왕이여 우리가 섬기는 하나님이 계시다면 우리를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에서 능히 건져내시겠고 왕의 손에서도 건져내시리이다. 그렇게 하지 아니하실지라도 왕이여 우리가 왕의 신들을 섬기지도 아니하고 왕이 세우신 금신상에게 절하지도 아니할 줄을 아옵소서(단3:17-18)

신비한 하나님을 아는 자들만이 할 수 있는 최고의 저항입니다. 저항은 신비를 아는 자가 잘합니다. 신비를 모르면 싸움만 하다 끝나지만 신비를 아는 사람들은 저항해서 이깁니다. 저항하여 헤쳐 나갈 것이 있다면 하나님을 찾으십시오. 신비한 하나님께서 신비하게 이끌어 주시사 다시 시작하고, 건너가게 이끌어 주실 것입니다.

3. 밝은 눈, 열린 귀
신비와 저항은 어떻게 생깁니까? 신비와 저항은 눈과 귀가 중요합니다. 소경이 눈 뜨듯 감겨졌던 눈이 열려 하나님의 신비가 보이고, 엘리야가 들었던 것처럼 세미한 하나님의 소리가 들려야 합니다. 그 때 마음의 각성이 일어납니다. ‘아, 그 동안 잘못 봤구나. 잘못 들었구나. 무지했구나. 진짜와 가짜를 구별하지 못했구나. 그릇이 작았구나. 시비만 걸었구나. 하나님을 몰랐구나. 이런 각성의 마음이 새롭게 시작하게 만듭니다.

각성될 때5절, 하나님을 하나님인줄 알게 됩니다. 6절. 7절 다시한번 봅니다. 모세와 아론이 여호와께서 자기들에게 명령하신 대로 행하였더라. 그들이 바로에게 말할 때에 모세는 팔십 세였고, 아론은 팔 십삼 세였더라. 다행입니다. 힘들지만 마음을 추스리고, 신비한 하나님의 인도하심과 계획을 받아들입니다. 그리고 가기 힘들어 했던 바로에게 다시 가, 말합니다. ‘우리 내 보내시오’

이들이 80 줄에 한 일입니다. 그래서 더 격려가 됩니다. 전성기가 지나도 하나님은 일을 주십니다. 산전수전 다 겪었기에 더 귀한 일을 주실 수 있습니다. 이것도 세상의 방식을 깨는 하나님의 신비입니다.

다시 시골학교 아침 선언문으로 돌아갑니다. ‘나는 건너가기를 멈추지 않습니다’. 여러분의 고백이 되기를 바랍니다. 우리도 건너가야 합니다. 눈 더 크게 뜨고, 귀도 더 크게 열어 건너가야 할 일 생길 때마다 나를 넘어서는 신비한 하나님 품고 저항하는 능력과 승리가 있기를 바라겠습니다.

Exodus Story 17: You Must Cross Over (Exodus 7:1-7)

It’s a slogan (words of affirmation) that students chant every morning at a small rural alternative school.
I will not stop crossing over.
I pursue excellence
I dream of a better me than I am.

It’s a good slogan for students to have. The words ‘I will not stop crossing’ struck a chord with me. I wish I could live out my dreams the way I set my mind to, but how many things would stop me? Tears, anger, frustration… salty. But even in those moments, I won’t stop crossing. I promise myself that I will.

“Crossing over” is a metaphor. The past grabs you by the ankles and won’t let go. The present is hard enough. The future is bleak, but I’m not going to let it hold me back, and I’m going to start anew. It’s called “crossing over.” If you don’t cross over, you get stuck. If you stop, you’ll be dragged around by the things that are holding you back. You have to cross, no matter how hard it is. When you cross, things you never thought possible will unfold.

Like the children, we need to say, “Lord, there are many things holding me back, I’m discouraged, but I’m going to get back up and cross.” Like the title of today’s message, we need to “cross” every moment.

2. Mystery and resistance: what gets you across.
We read the beginning of chapter 7 today, and the chaos we’ve seen so far is still there. Moses is having a hard time, the people are having a hard time, and the exodus is stalled, unable to move forward. They need to cross the Red Sea, they need to cross the wilderness, but they’re stuck in Egypt. Chapter 7 is about these people who are stopped by something and can’t cross.

Who are the people who are stopped from crossing over? Moses, Aaron, and 4 million Israelites. A huge group of people are stopped from ‘crossing over’. They are on the verge of exploding, let alone ‘crossing over’. It is a time of great need for ’emotion’ and ‘discernment’ and ‘wisdom’ to control the situation. Chapter 7 is a word from God at such a sensitive time. It’s addressed to Moses, but it’s also addressed to the entire community of Israel. In a nutshell, don’t sit there and ‘blame others’, but ‘cross over’. “Do what is planned.
Let’s take a look at what he’s talking about.

Verse 1. When Moses says he can’t go because he can’t speak, what do you say you’ll do? I’ll make Pharaoh, who has been ruling like a ‘god’, fall, and I’ll make him think of you like a ‘god’. Then you won’t have to be afraid anymore. In verses 3 and 4, God says something even more cryptic. I will make Pharaoh even more evil so that he will never listen to you. Worse, but the exodus is going to be hard, and he’s saying he’s going to make Pharaoh even more wicked. He’s saying that if Pharaoh becomes extremely wicked, he’s going to strike him with a plague to get him to surrender.

So Moses, get up again, and the Israelites, get up again, and ‘cross over’, and ‘be free’, this is what God is saying. God’s intention is clear: listen, accept, and ‘cross over’.

Should we believe it?
Should we ignore it?

To believe requires two words. One is ‘mystery’ and the other is ‘resistance’. These are the two words you need to cross over. Mystery is trusting God, and resistance is the strength that comes from trusting God. I don’t know it all, but trusting God’s leading, love, and sovereignty. It’s mystery. It’s not trusting because I can see it, it’s not trusting because things look good. It’s trusting because it’s God.

When we recognize and accept the mystery of God, God is experienced, God’s faithfulness and love are felt. It is this recognition of the mystery of God that creates resistance. In the mystery of God, in the mystery of grace, one becomes strong. Mystery and resistance, God and courage. These are the two things these people need right now.

There is a saying: “It seems like a contradiction, but human possibilities are infinite. Man’s impossibilities are also infinite. ‘ (Gerog Simmel) Man’s possibilities are infinite, his impossibilities are infinite. He moves back and forth between the two. Believers are people whose possibilities are greater than their impossibilities. I have many impossibilities, but God’s possibilities are greater, so if I embrace the mystery of God and resist the possibilities, I can cross over. If there is no mystery, if there is no resistance, there is only the infinity of the impossible, and there is no Exodus, no Red Sea to cross.

(1) Mystery is the way Christians recognize God. Christians who are mystics are those who live “courageously” with the uncompromising awareness that an unknowable but faithful God leads and governs. Mystery is the strongest resistance that people of faith have to the materialistic world. Through mystery we can enter deeply into God and God’s world. Faith is a strange, mysterious gift that comes to those who embrace mystery.

As 2 Corinthians 5:7 confesses, believers are a mysterious people who do not live by sight alone, but by faith.Mystery must not die. We must be open to the mystery that God creates. God is mysteriously speaking and leading even now. Let’s open our eyes and see. When we see God’s faithful guidance and control, we can “cross over” without getting stuck. When we insist on the world and our own will without God, we miss the way and the power to “cross over. Those who see the mystery of God can stand up.

(2) As the mystery grows stronger, so does resistance. Resistance is best done by those who have God. When we experience the mystery of God, God gives us the greatest capacity to resist. And the resistance that comes from God is good, good resistance. Whenever you resist with good resistance, you cross over.

The forces that keep us from crossing are not weak. There are five main ones. Despair, fear, discouragement, the world, and injustice. These are all the problems Moses and the Israelites were facing. If you fall into any of these without God, you fall apart. You can’t cross the Exodus, you can’t cross the Red Sea; you can only cross it by resisting with God’s faithfulness in your heart.

I will make Pharaoh your God. Amen. Through Aaron, I will solve your inability to speak. Amen.
Pharaoh will be even more evil than he is now, but don’t worry. I will make him so. I will surely bring him to his knees. Amen. It is mysterious. Mystery gives us the strength to resist.

The behavior of Daniel and his three friends is always exciting to watch. Aren’t they the ones taken captive? They must do as they are told. There’s a crisis: ‘Eat the food the king has given you.’ You can’t resist, but you fight back, saying you won’t eat it. I will do so for ten days without staging a fight, and then I want you to compare yourself with those who ate the king’s food and decide. I ask. Who was in better shape? Daniel and his three friends come out in good shape.

A bigger challenge comes. This time it’s to bow down to the king’s golden image. It’s a crisis that seems impossible to cross. But these friends, who trust in God, who believe in God’s sovereignty, resist. How do they resist: “O king, if there is a God whom we serve, He will surely deliver us from the raging fiery furnace, and He will deliver us out of the king’s hand. But if you will not do so, O king, know that we will not serve your gods, nor bow down to the graven images that you have set up (Dan. 3:17-18).

Resistance is best done by those who know the mysterious God. Resistance is best done by those who know the mystery. Those who don’t know the mystery end up fighting, but those who know the mystery resist and win. If you have something to resist, seek God. A mysterious God will mysteriously lead you to start over, to cross over.

3. Bright eyes, open ears
How is mystery and resistance created? Mystery and resistance are about eyes and ears. Eyes that have been closed must be opened, like the eyes of a blind man, to see the mystery of God and hear the still small voice of God, like Elijah heard. Then there is an awakening of the heart: “Oh, I’ve been looking wrong, I’ve been listening wrong, I’ve been ignorant, I’ve been unable to distinguish between the real and the fake, I’ve had a small vessel, I’ve been arguing, I’ve not known God.” This awakening causes the heart to begin anew.

When you are awakened, verse 5, you recognize God as God. Verse 6. Look again at verse 7. And Moses and Aaron did all that the LORD commanded them: and when they spake unto Pharaoh, Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Good for them, they pull themselves together, they accept the mysterious guidance and plan of God, and they go back to Pharaoh, who they had a hard time going to, and they say, “Let us go.

That’s what they did in line 80, and that’s what encourages me. Even when you’re past your prime, God gives you work. He can give you more precious work because you’ve been through the wringer. This too is a mystery of God that breaks the ways of the world.

Which brings me back to my country school morning declaration: ‘I never stop crossing’. May it be your confession too. We have to cross too. Open your eyes wider, open your ears wider.
And whenever I have to cross, may I have the strength to resist and the victory to embrace the mystery of the God who is beyond me.
