Love never ends.

To Love, the Resurrection Command (1 Corinthians 13:1-8)
2023.4.9. Resurrection Sunday
by Pastor Eun Ick Yang

1.
It is the morning of Resurrection Sunday. Like the sun rising red through the clay-like darkness, like the colorful spring flowers bursting through the frozen earth in yellow, white, and crimson, may it be a heartening resurrection morning for us too, stirring with love, hope, and faith.

Isn’t it wonderful that the Lord who died is risen? May we not believe it in a casual way, but may grace lead us to believe it more deeply and with excitement. May many on this earth fall on their humble knees before the resurrection of the Lord.

It’s not just that you’re risen that the resurrection has brought us, for the Lord said to Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, though he dies, he will live.” (John 11:25) The resurrected Lord has not only raised you to life, but he has raised us to life as well. When that day comes, we too will live as you did, with exciting resurrection bodies. Passing through doors as if they weren’t there, writing benedictions.

It will be incomprehensible. But we can only stand before God in fear and trembling because something strange has happened in the resurrection of the Lord. The resurrection is beyond what I believe or don’t believe because it is something God has done.

All we can do in the face of the resurrection is say, “Thank you, Lord. As we prepare for the day of resurrection, I’m going to live harder, better, and more gratefully.” That’s enough.

For those of you who are down and out, be encouraged as you renew your resurrection will on the morning of the resurrection. Our prime is not now; our prime is the day we are resurrected to be with the Lord, so ‘cheer up’ as you look forward to that day. This is the life of a believer.

Believers are those who are preparing for the resurrection. Those who are preparing for the resurrection should not live ‘like those who will die’. They must live ‘as one who will be resurrected’. Vigorously, uprightly, reverently.

2. Eternal love (v. 8)
The thing that those who will be resurrected should be most concerned about is not an inheritance, nor is it real estate. I’ll skip the middle man. It’s “love” that the resurrected will care about. We are to live by love and die by love. Love is the most important thing.

Love is the divine inheritance demonstrated and left behind by the crucified Lord, the risen Lord. The Lord went to the cross out of love. The cross is the culmination of love. The Lord was resurrected out of love. The resurrection is a gift of love from the Lord. He didn’t come back to life just to prove, “I’m so strong,” he came back to life because of love.

He didn’t come back to this earth that he treated so badly because of love. He came to give us a kingdom of love where God is with us, a kingdom where tears, sin, and injustice are overcome.

Love is what the dying and risen Lord wants from us. It is love that He asks of those who appreciate His resurrection, that He commands: ‘Love. The forgiveness of Peter makes it seem so, for there is nothing greater than love. It is a fearful command, a burdensome command, but it is a command that must be received. To love.

It is the calling of those who hope for the resurrection, a calling that cannot fail because love does not die. It is a responsibility.

Look at verse 8. Love does not pass away (New Living Translation), Love never ends (ESV). Paul knew that love goes on. Love is eternal. Love is the thread that connects the now to the future. It is precious.

When believers have it, they don’t need prophecies, tongues, or knowledge, which they are so proud of, but love never ends, never ends, only love. My love now continues to the future of the resurrection.

He who lives in love is a wise man. It is said that if you have a lot of love, you are a fool of the world, but that is not true; he who says so is a fool, and he who does not say so but sees pathetically inside is a fool.

The one who lives in love, not abandoning it in the midst of difficulties, because only love is eternal, is the wise and beautiful one. Love is the only thing left on the day of resurrection, so practice it well and take it with you.

Love is unique. To what extent is it unique?

Verse 1. Even if you speak in tongues, heavenly languages, and angelic speech, if you don’t have love, it’s just meaningless noise, a loud clatter.

I don’t know what angelic speech is like; I imagine it’s mysterious, pleasant, and sweet, but even that means nothing without love.

It’s like this. I’m saying that no matter how eloquent my sermon is, if I don’t have love in my heart, no matter what I say, it’s just bullshit.

How unique is love? Verse 2. Even if you have the ability to prophesy, even if you have all the spiritual secrets, if you don’t have ‘love’, you are ‘nothing’.

The value that God recognizes is not mystical abilities, but simple ‘love’.

Verse 3 is even better. Even if you give away all your possessions, and if that’s not enough, even if you give your body as the Lord did, if you don’t have love, you are worth nothing. What a tragedy.

Love is more important than sacrifice. No matter how valuable a sacrifice is, if there is no love in it, it is a reckless waste.

Love is unique, absolute. Without love, no good, no sacrifice, no ability is worth anything. It is love that makes us valuable, and only love is eternal. Because love is eternal, those who hope for a resurrection life must have a love that does not fade away.

3. Love (vv. 4-7)
This love, what is it? What does it look like to love? What does it look like to live? You may not know.

In today’s passage, Paul uses 15 verbs to tell us what love is. It’s everyday life that we all know. Now, Paul is saying this to the Corinthians, and he’s not saying this because they don’t know. He’s saying this because they do know, but they’re not doing it. Their greed and their sense of superiority is blocking their love.

It’s the same thing with us. We have a pretty good idea of what love is, but we just can’t do it. And so Paul is giving them a calming reminder of the kind of love that endures, the kind of love that doesn’t pass away.

You see, these 15 hymns of love are the character of the Lord that we are to emulate. Let’s call out all 15 of them verbatim, so you can feel them.

A. Love is longsuffering. It endures when you want to strike back.
b. Love is kind. It doesn’t ignore you when you’re lacking, but accepts you with kindness.
c. Love is not envious. It doesn’t make you jealous of what you don’t have.
d. Love doesn’t boast. It doesn’t flaunt what I have.
e. Love is not arrogant. It doesn’t puff itself up with what it has.
f. Love is not disrespectful. It doesn’t talk down to you. It’s considerate. It’s thoughtful.
G. Love is not selfish (self-interested). It doesn’t look out for its own good, but for the good of others.
H. Love does not lose its temper. It is patient with situations that upset it.
I. Love does not hold a grudge. It remembers and lets go, and does not seek revenge.
j. Love does not rejoice when it sees injustice.
k. Love sees the truth and rejoices.
l. Love covers all things.
m. Love believes all things.
n. Love hopes all things
o. Love bears all things. It does this ‘in all things’ and ‘to all people’, not depending on circumstances and conditions and who.

This is how a person is’. Don’t do this to me, do that to me. Love is precious. It is necessary. Prophecy, tongues, and knowledge may end, but love must not. Love never ends. Love never ends. I need it now, I need it tomorrow. The love I have now is the love that will remain in the future.

To live without love while waiting for the resurrection is to be “a loaf of bread without a crust” and an “empty cart with a lot of noise.

Count them: how many out of fifteen are you confident in? How long do you bear with it? How much do you not envy and bluff? How unassuming, how considerate of others? How much do you cover, how much do you endure?

Love is not a slogan; it is a life to be lived. This is the love that those who live resurrection lives must live. This is the love that keeps us from falling apart. In this love, there is a way.

Shouldn’t we heal the pain of an age that is impatient, unkind, unable to see others succeed, whose bravado burns, whose pride pierces the sky, who is rude, whose backbone is long, who reveals everything, who doesn’t believe in everything, who can’t bear the smallest thing, with the love of those who hope for the resurrection?

‘Live like a ball that bounces even when it falls to the ground,’ says poet Jung Hyun-jong.

‘Yes, I have to live, you too become a ball, a ball that bounces even if it falls, a ball that never falls’ . Don’t give up, it says, stand up; don’t give up on love.

Resurrection commands firmly. You who will be resurrected ‘will love’ . Only love is eternal. Receive well, love with all your heart May we all have the wonderful, mysterious grace of meeting again in glory on the day of resurrection.
