출애굽이야기 3: 당당히 맞서라(출1:15~21).

1. 螳螂拒轍
‘당랑거철’이라는 장자에 나오는 단어입니다. 당랑은 사마귀이고, 거철은 수레를 막다입니다. 사마귀 한 마리가 제왕이 타고 가는 수레로 달려들어 가지 못하게 막은데서 유래한 단어입니다. 무모함과 용감함. 두 가지 뜻으로 쓰입니다. 분수도 모르고 덤빌 때는 무모함이고, 자기보다 압도하는 상대인데도 물러서지 않는 것은 용감함입니다.

오늘 본문에 딱 들어 맞는 단어입니다. 무모하고, 용감한 히브리 산파들의 모습 그대로 입니다. 제왕 수레에 달려든 사마귀나, 바로왕에게 맞짱 든 히브리 산파나 다를게 없습니다. 같은 그림입니다.

지금 출애굽기 1장의 시대는 공포의 시대입니다. 그 공포의 정점에 애굽왕이 있고, 그 애굽왕이 피를 부르는 공포의 지시를 내리고 있습니다. ‘남자 아이는 태어나는 즉시 다 죽여라’. 거역할 수 없는 살해 명령을 내립니다. 그것도 자기들 손에 피 한 방울 안 묻히는 치사한 방법으로 내립니다. 히브리 산파가 히브리 자녀들을 죽이게 만듭니다.

하지만 누구도 예상하지 못한 일이 벌어집니다. 놀랍게도 왕의 명령을 산파들이 거역합니다. 17절. 그러나 산파들은 이집트 왕이 하라는 대로 하지 않고 사내 아이들을 살려주었다’(공동). 당랑거철, 사마귀처럼 무모하고, 용감합니다.

두 가지만 달라는 기도가 있습니다. ‘나에게 오직 두 가지만 주소서. 나보다 약한 자 앞에서는 겸손할 수 있는 여유를, 나보다 강한 자 앞에서는 당당할 수 있는 깊이를’(박노해) 이런 모습이 얼마나 없으면 기도까지 했겠습니까? 기도처럼 대부분은 약자에게는 으시대고, 강자 앞에서는 비굴할 때가 많습니다. 하지만 힘없는 히브리 여인 두명이 주체 할 수 없을 정도의 많은 힘을 가진 자 앞에서 당당한 모습을 보여주고 있습니다. 어디서 이런 당당함이 왔습니까? 궁금하지 않으십니까? 오늘 묵상은 둘 입니다. 이런 당당함이 어디서 오는가? 필요한 게 무엇인가? 묵상하면서 당당하게 맞서 나가는 신나는 모습 기대하겠습니다.

2. 묵상.
(1) 신앙의 힘
첫번째 묵상은 신앙입니다. 주눅들지 않는 당당함은 신앙에서 나옵니다. 그 신앙이 주는 신앙의 힘에서 나옵니다. 돈과 지위가 주는 당당함과는 차원이 다른 당당함을 신앙이 줍니다. 돈과 지위가 주는 역설이 있습니다. 많아도 비굴해진다. 아니 많을수록 매인다. 당당하지 못합니다. 꺾을 수 없는 당당함은 신앙에서 밖에 올 수 없습니다. 신앙이 주는 힘을 가진 사람은 문제 앞에, 불의 앞에, 사람 앞에 무너지지 않고 맞설 수 있습니다. 신앙은 하나님을 신뢰하고, 복종하는 영적인 행위입니다. 이 영적인 행위가 무너지지 않는 힘, 당당한 힘을 줍니다.

슬픈 울음이 새 나오는 밤입니다. 궁에서 전갈이 옵니다. ‘히브리 산파 십브라와 부아 들어와라’. 부를 이유가 없는데 부르니 떨립니다. 왜 오라는거지? 가보니 놀랍게도 부른 이가 바로 왕입니다. 대면 할 수 없는 이가 코 앞에서 거절 할 수 없는 명령을 내립니다. ‘사내 아이는 죽여라’. 눈 하나 깜짝하지 않고 귀한 생명, 죽이라는 명령을 내립니다.

상황을 모르지 않으니 떨리는 가슴 안고 돌아옵니다. 어떻게 해야 하나? 아이 낳는다는 전갈이 옵니다. 아이를 받으니 아들입니다. 피붙이 생명입니다. 힘겹게 살아가는 동족의 희망입니다. 죽여야 하는데 죽일 수가 없어 죽이지 않습니다. 큰일입니다. 집으로 철수합니다. 어떻게 하나? 또 연락이 옵니다. 또 갑니다. 또 아들입니다. 또 죽이지 않습니다. 처음 살릴 때는 산 생명이라 죽이지 못했는데 두번 세번 살리다 보니 ‘죽으면 죽으리라’. 각오가 생깁니다. ‘죽이라 하지만 죽일 수 없다. 죽여서는 안된다. 내가 죽겠다’. 힘 없는 이들이지만 출애굽 사건에서 바로에게 저항했던 최초의 사람이 됩니다.

사실을 알게된 바로가 두 사람을 불러들입니다. 위기의 순간입니다. 하지만 이미 마음의 준비가 끝났기에 처음 궁으로 들어갈때 만큼 떨리지 않습니다. 왕은 분노하며 몰아 부칩니다. ‘왜 안죽였어’. 두 사람은 태연한게 대답합니다. 19절. 히브리 여인들은 이집트 여인들과 같지 않습니다. 그들은 기운이 좋아서 산파가 그들에게 이르기도 전에 아기를 낳아 버립니다’

사실이 아닙니다. 사람들은 이 모습을 보고 산파들이 거짓말했다고 뭐라하지만 거짓말로 몰아 부치는 것은 너무 옹졸합니다. 이 사람들은 지금 살기 위해서 변명하는 게 아닙니다. 동족의 미래를 살해하는 불의한 세력에 저항하는 것이고, 더 나아가 조롱하고 있는 것입니다. 말하는 거 잘 보세요. ‘히브리 여인들이 당신네 여인들보다 쎄다’. 바로의 면전에서 바로를 비웃고 있는 거나 마찬가지입니다. ‘당신이 아무리 우리를 죽이려고해도 우리가 더 쎄고, 우리는 안죽는다’.맞서고 있습니다. 하루 아침이 이런 신앙이 생기지는 않았을 것입니다. 압제의 힘든 시기를 거치면서 오랜 시간 축적되고, 숙성되서 나왔을 것입니다.

산파들은 지금 선택하고 있지만, 권력자인 바로를 선택하지 않고 자신들이 경외하는 하나님과 하나님의 뜻과 의지를 선택합니다. 위험하고 무모한 선택이지만 그렇게 합니다. 하지만 이 선택이 차원이 다른 삶을 살게 만듭니다. 차원이 달라졌다는 것은 새로운 시선이 생겼다는 것입니다. 남이 보지 못한 것 보고, 남이 듣지 못한 것 듣고, 남이 모르는 걸 깨닫게 됩니다. 삶이 달라지고, 신앙이 달라집니다.

바로가 두렵지만 바로보다 더 존엄하고, 옳은 하나님이 보입니다. 죽음이 두렵지만 죽이지 않고 살려낸 아이들에게서 이스라엘의 희망이 보입니다. ‘아, 내가 거름이 되도 되겠구나’.모르긴 몰라도 바로에 맞서는 십브라와 부아를 숨 죽이며 지켜보던 수 많은 히브리 산파들이 환호성을 질렀을 것입니다. ‘우리도 맞서자’. 신앙을 가진 이가 뿌린 놀라운 씨앗입니다. 그대로 다 받으면 좋겠습니다. 맞서야 할게 얼마나 많습니까? 역경,가짜, 불의, 불신, 유혹, 두려움, 낙심, 조급함, 편견, 자만, 죄. 다 맞서야 합니다.

문장 하나 드리겠습니다. ‘나는 그럴 수 없다’. 당당하게 맞서게 하는 신비한 문장입니다. 선택과 결정의 순간에 써 보십시오. ‘다 그래도, 나는 그럴 수 없지’. ‘하나님이 함께 하시고, 사랑하시고, 은혜를 주시는데 내가 그러면 안되지, 나는 그럴 수 없어’ 선택과 결정의 순간에 꺼내쓰면 도움이 될 것입니다. ‘죽여라, 포기해라, 타협해라, 따라와라’ 수많은 바로들이 달려 들때마다 신앙이 주는 힘을 가지고 당당하게 맞서 나갑시다. 산파들에게 은혜를 베푸신 것처럼(20절) 우리들에게도 은혜를 베풀어 주실 것입니다.

(2)의지의 힘
두 번째 묵상입니다. 두번째 묵상은 의지입니다. 의지는 끝까지 해내겠다는 간절함, 단호함입니다. 간절한 의지가 있으면 중단하지 않고 맞설 수 있습니다.. 먹고 싶은데 안 먹고, 피고 싶은데 안 피고, 쓰고 싶은데 안쓰고, 자고 싶지만 참고. 의지입니다. 의지가 있어야 중단하지 않고 해낼 수 있습니다. 사랑, 믿음, 기도, 묵상, 운동, 저항. 모두 의지가 필요합니다. 없으면 맞서지 못하고 스톱입니다.

이 의지를 신앙이 만듭니다. 신앙에서 의지가 옵니다. 하나님을 신뢰하고, 하나님께 복종할 때 의지가 생깁니다. ‘하나님의 뜻이 이거구나’. 아는 순간 강한 의지가 생깁니다. 주님 뜻이니 한번 해보자. 신앙이 의지를 만들고, 의지가 그 일을 하게 만듭니다. 신앙과 의지, 둘 다 있어야 합니다. 산파들에게 이 둘이 다 있었습니다. 신앙으로 하나님의 뜻을 알았고, 의지로 바로에 맞섰습니다. 아는 것으로 그치지 않고 죽음을 각오한 의지로 바로에 맞서 아이들을 죽이지 않았던 것입니다. 의지가 없으면 생각으로 끝냈을 것입니다.

의지에서 중요한 것은 하나님의 의지입니다. 내 의지가 있지만 내 의지보다 하나님의 의지가 더 중요합니다. 충돌하면 누구 의지를 꺾어야 합니까? 내 의지를 꺾어야 합니다. 자기 의지를 꺾을 줄 아는 사람이 신자입니다. 자기 의지를 꺾어야 하나님의 의지가 들어 올 수 있습니다. 하나님의 의지, 하나님의 뜻이 우리를 강하게 하고, 당당하게 만듭니다.

이런 말 있습니다. ‘의지는 다 ‘예’라고 할 때, 혼자서 ‘아니오’라고 말할 수 있는 힘이다’ 히브리 산파들이 한 일입니다. ‘아니오, 죽일 수 없소’ 하나님의 뜻과 의지를 알았기에 죽이지 않고, 당당하게 맞섰던 것입니다. ‘난 내가 경외하는 하나님의 뜻과 의지를 따르겠다. 어린 생명 죽일 수 없다’ 산파들의 의지가 만들어낸 놀라운 저항이고, 맞섬이고, 당당함이고, 헌신이고, 역사입니다.

말씀 맺겠습니다. 십브라와 부아는 볼수록 대단합니다. 용감했고, 당당했고, 헌신했고, 지혜로웠고, 불의에 맞섰습니다. 도전이 됩니다. 우리도, 무엇이 됐던 믿음과 의지를 가지고 당당하게 맞서 이겨내는 일, 많아지게 하십시다.

1. 螳螂拒轍
This is a word from the Chinese characters for “danglang gechul.” Danglang is a wart, and gechul means to block a chariot. The word comes from the story of a mantis blocking the king’s chariot. Recklessness and bravery. It has two meanings. It’s reckless to jump into something without knowing what you’re doing, and it’s brave to not back down when you’re outnumbered.

It’s a perfect word for today’s text. The Hebrew midwives are reckless and brave. It doesn’t matter if it’s a mantis running at the king’s chariot or a Hebrew midwife standing up to King Pharaoh, it’s the same picture.

Now, the time in Exodus 1 is a time of terror, and at the apex of that terror is the Pharaoh, and the Pharaoh is issuing a blood-curdlingly horrific directive: “Kill all male children as soon as they are born. It’s a kill order that can’t be disobeyed. And they do it in such a gruesome way that they don’t have a drop of blood on their hands. They make Hebrew midwives kill Hebrew children.

But then something happens that no one expects. Surprisingly, the midwives defy the king’s orders. Verse 17. ‘But the midwives did not do what the king of Egypt told them to do, but spared the male children’ (co). They are reckless, warts and all, and brave.

There is a prayer that asks for only two things: ‘Give me only two things. The room to be humble before those weaker than me, and the depth to be proud before those stronger than me’ (Park, Nohae) How many of us would even pray if we didn’t have these qualities? Like most prayers, they are often shrugged off by the weak and cower before the strong. But here are two powerless Hebrew women standing tall in the face of a man with so much power that they can’t control it. Where does this confidence come from, you might ask? Today’s devotional is about two things. Where does this confidence come from? What do I need? I can’t wait to see the excitement of standing tall.

2. Meditation
(1) The Power of Faith
The first reflection is on faith. Unabashed dignity comes from faith, and the power of faith comes from the strength of faith. Faith gives you a dignity that is different from the dignity of money and status. There is a paradox with money and status. More makes you stronger. No, the more you have, the more you are bound. You can’t be confident. Unbreakable confidence can only come from faith. Faith gives you the strength to stand in the face of problems, in the face of injustice, and in the face of people without falling apart. Faith is the spiritual act of trusting God, of submitting to Him, and it is this spiritual act that gives us the strength to stand tall, the strength to not fall.

It is a night of sad cries. A messenger comes from the palace: ‘Zebra and Boaz, the Hebrew midwife, come in.’ There is no reason for her to come, but she trembles at the call. Why is she being asked to come? She goes, and to her surprise, it is the king. The one you can’t see face to face gives you a command you can’t refuse. ‘Kill the male child’. Without batting an eye, he gives the order to kill a precious life.

You return with a trembling heart because you don’t know what’s going on. What should you do? A messenger tells you that you are carrying a child. You receive the child, a son. It’s life, the hope of your people who are struggling to survive. You should kill it, but you can’t, so you don’t. It’s a big deal. You retreat to your home. What do I do? I get another call. I go again. I go again. It’s my son. I don’t kill him again. The first time, I couldn’t kill him because he was alive, but the second and third time, I realized, ‘If I die, I will die’. I’m determined: “Kill him, but I can’t kill him. I must not kill. I will die’. Despite their powerlessness, they become the first people to resist Pharaoh in the Exodus.

When Pharaoh finds out, he calls them in. It’s a moment of crisis. But they’ve already prepared themselves, so they’re not as nervous as they were when they first entered the palace. The king is furious, demanding: “Why didn’t you kill him? The two men reply nonchalantly. Verse 19. ‘The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; they are in such good spirits that they bring forth their babies before the midwife has reached them’

It’s not true, people see this and say the midwives lied to them, but to accuse them of lying is too much of a stretch. These people aren’t making excuses to live in the present; they’re resisting an unjust force that is murdering the future of their people, and even worse, they’re mocking it. Watch what they say: ‘The Hebrew women are stronger than your women’. You’re laughing at Pharaoh to his face: ‘No matter how hard you try to kill us, we’re stronger, we don’t die’.You’re standing up. This faith didn’t happen overnight. It would have been built up over a long period of time, ripened and fermented through hard times of oppression.

The midwives are making a choice now, but they’re not choosing Pharaoh, the man in power, they’re choosing God, the God they fear, and God’s will. It’s a risky, reckless choice, but they do it, and it leads to a different kind of life. And by different, I mean you get new eyes. You see things others don’t see, hear things others don’t hear, and realize things others don’t realize. Your life is different, your faith is different.

You fear Pharaoh, but you see a God who is more dignified, more righteous than Pharaoh. I’m afraid of death, but I see the hope of Israel in the children he spared instead of killing: ‘Ah, maybe I can be manure’.I don’t know, but I’m sure the countless Hebrew midwives who watched with bated breath as Zebra and Boaz stood up to Pharaoh were cheering: ‘Let’s do it too’. What an amazing seed sown by a man of faith. I hope we get it all. How many things do we have to face? Adversity, pretense, injustice, unbelief, temptation, fear, discouragement, impatience, prejudice, pride, sin. You have to face them all.

I’ll give you a sentence: ‘I can’t do that’. It’s a mysterious sentence that forces you to face up. Use it in moments of choice and decision. ‘In spite of everything, I can’t’. ‘God is with me, loving me, giving me grace, but I shouldn’t, I can’t.’ It’s helpful to say in moments of choice and decision. ‘Kill, give up, compromise, follow me.’ When the barrage of options comes at us, let’s face them with the strength of faith. Just as God was gracious to the midwives (v. 20), he will be gracious to us.

(2) The power of will
This is the second contemplation. The second contemplation is willpower. Willpower is the eagerness and determination to see something through to the end. When you have a strong will, you can face things without stopping. You want to eat, but you don’t, you want to smoke, but you don’t, you want to write, but you don’t, you want to sleep, but you do. It’s willpower. It’s the will that keeps you going. Love, faith, prayer, contemplation, exercise, resistance. They all require will. Without it, you don’t face it, you stop.

Faith creates this will. Will comes from faith. Will comes from trusting God, submitting to God, knowing, ‘This is God’s will.’ The moment you know, you have a strong will. It’s God’s will, so let’s do it. Faith creates the will, and the will makes you do it. You have to have both, faith and will. The midwives had both. By faith they knew the will of God, and by will they faced Pharaoh. They didn’t stop at knowing, they stood up to Pharaoh with death-defying will and didn’t kill the children. Without will, they would have done it with thought.

The important thing about will is God’s will. I have my will, but God’s will is more important than my will. When there is a conflict, whose will must be broken? My will must be broken. The person who can break his will is a believer. You have to break your own will so that God’s will can come in. God’s will, God’s will, makes us strong, makes us confident.

There’s a saying, “Will is the power to say no, alone, when everyone else is saying yes.” That’s what the Hebrew midwives did. “No, I can’t kill.” They didn’t kill because they knew the will and the will of God, and they stood up and said, “I will follow the will and the will of the God I revere. I will follow the will and the will of the God I revere.” It’s an amazing resistance, it’s a confrontation, it’s a stand, it’s a commitment, it’s history.

Let me say this: Zebra and Boaz are amazing to watch. They were brave, they were confident, they were committed, they were wise, and they stood up to injustice. It’s a challenge. Let’s do more of the same, standing up for what we believe in, no matter what.
