출애굽 이야기 1: 약속 지키기(출1:1~7)

1. 약속
‘나무들의 약속’이라는 김명수 시인의 童詩 보면서 오늘 부터 시작하는 출애굽 이야기 첫 번째 말씀 시작하겠습니다.

숲 속 나무들의 봄날 약속은 다 같이 초록 잎을 피워 내는 것
숲 속 나무들의 여름 약속은 다 같이 우쭐우쭐 키가 크는 것
숲 속 나무들의 가을 약속은 다 같이 곱게 곱게 단풍 드는 것
숲 속 나무들의 겨울 약속은 다 같이 눈보라를 견뎌 내는 것.

계절마다 숲 속의 나무들이 약속을 합니다. ‘봄에는 다같이 초록잎을 피워내자. 여름에는 우쭐우쭐 키크자’. 재미있지요. 시인은 나무들의 약속이라 했지만 사실은 자연의 약속이고, 자연의 약속은 하나님의 약속입니다. 창8:22에 노아 홍수 후에 하신 ‘하나님의 약속’이 나옵니다. ‘땅이 있을 동안에는 심음과 거둠과 추위와 더위와 여름과 겨울과 낮과 밤이 쉬지 아니하리라’. 봄 되면 초록 잎 피워내고, 가을되면 곱게 곱게 단풍 들게 하겠다는 것입니다. 어떤가요? ‘약속’ 그대로 지켜지고 있지요! 이제 조금있으면 연두빛 초록 잎으로 뒤덮일 거에요.

오늘 말씀 제목이 ‘약속 지키기’로 되있습니다. 출애굽 첫 번째 이야기를 ‘약속’으로 시작하는 이유는 출애굽기의 시작이 ‘약속을 지키는 하나님’으로 시작하고 있고, 출애굽기 전체가 ‘약속을 지키시는 하나님’의 일하심이기 때문입니다. 하나님은 약속하셨고, 약속을 지키셨고, 약속을 지키시기 위해 일하십니다. 그 일하심의 사건이 출애굽의 이야기들이고, 구원의 역사입니다.

창46:3-4에 야곱에게 하신 ‘약속’이 나옵니다. ‘나는 하나님, 곧 너의 아버지의 하나님이다. 이집트로 내려가는 것을 두려워 하지 말아라. 내가 거기에서 너를 큰 민족이 되게 하고, 나도 너와 함께 이집트로 내려갔다가 내가 반드시 너를 거기에서 데리고 나오겠다.’(새번역)

이 약속 그대로 지키십니다. 출1:1-7절이 이 말씀입니다. 저는 약속을 지키시는 신실하신 하나님이 참 고맙고 감사합니다. 하나님은 변덕이 죽 끓듯 하지 않으시고 약속을 지키십니다. 출애굽 때만 지킨게 아니라, 창조부터 종말까지, 알파에서 오메가까지 우리를 위한 약속을 하시고 지키십니다. 감사하고 든든합니다.

2. 약속과 성취

성경을 두 단어로 압축하면 약속과 성취입니다. 두 단어 다 묵직합니다. 약속에 깊은 신적 사랑이 들어 있고, 성취에는 속 깊은 신적 은혜가 들어 있습니다. 약속만 있어도 안되구요, 약속없는 성취만 있어도 안됩니다. 둘 다 있어야 온전한 구원과 회복이 만들어 집니다. 하나님은 약속하고, 지키시고, 이루십니다. 그러므로 신앙의 삶은 약속을 믿고, 약속을 따라가고, 약속의 이루어짐을 누리는 삶입니다. 약속이 얼마나 중요하면 성경의 이름을 舊約, 新約이라고 했겠습니까? 성경은 약속의 책이고, 성취의 책입니다. 약속과 성취 사이에 믿음을 가진 우리가 있습니다. 신앙 생활은 ‘약속 믿고 굳게 서는 생활’입니다. 약속이 있기에 무너지지 않고 굳게 서는 것입니다.

앞으로 보게 될 출애굽 이야기는 약속을 이루어 가시는 하나님의 이야기입니다. 약속을 지키기 위해 ① 이스라엘을 찾아 오시고(1:1~6:30), ② 약속을 지키기 위해 이스라엘을 출애굽시켜 홍해를 갈라 구원하시고(7:1~15:18), ③ 약속을 지키기 위해 광야 길을 인도하시고(15:19~18:17) ④ 약속을 지키기 위해 시내산에서 강림하여 이스라엘과 언약을 맺으시고(19:1~24:18) ⑤ 약속을 지키는 하나님을 믿지 못하고 금송아지 우상을 만드는 이들에게 진노하시고(32:1~34:35) ⑥ 성막을 만들어(25~31, 35~40장) 그들과 함께 하십니다.

하나님이 어떤 분인지가 출애굽 이야기 속에 고스란히 나와 있습니다. ‘찾아 오시고, 구원하시고, 인도하시고, 언약을 맺으시고, 진노하시고, 함께 하시는 하나님’. 누구 얘기 하는 겁니까? 예수님 이야기입니다. 출애굽 이야기는 예수님의 이야기를 앞서서 보여 주고 있습니다. ‘출애굽기가 없는 성경은 불가능하다’는 말을 하는 이유이기도 합니다. 이번 기회에 잘 보면 좋겠습니다.

3. 묵상
오늘 본문. 출애굽기 시작을 보면서 두 가지 묵상하겠습니다. 약속을 지키는 하나님과 약속을 지키는 나.

(1) 약속을 지키는 하나님.
첫 번째 묵상입니다. 약속을 지키는 하나님. 꾹꾹 눌러 담아 두세요. 생의 매 순간에 필요한 신앙의 토대입니다. 단테의 신곡에 나오는 한 구절입니다. ‘흑암 중에 그대를, 지옥의 골짜기를 뒤덮은 깊은 밤으로부터 인도할 그대의 안내자와 등불은 누구인가?’ 여러분들은 가지고 계십니까? 밤이 깊어 가야 할 길 보이지 않을 때 안내할 이, 안내 해 줄 등불. 그 등불이 약속을 지키는 신실한 하나님이면 좋겠습니다. 우리 인생의 최고의 안내자, 가장 밝은 등불은 하나님 이십니다.

말3:6입니다. ‘나 주는 변하지 않는다. 그러므로 너 야곱의 자손아, 너희는 멸망하지 않는다’(새번역). 변하지 않는 하나님이 하신 약속입니다. ‘너는 멸망하지 않아’. 이 약속 가진자는 등불을 가지고 있는 것입니다. 약속을 품고 있으면 그 약속이 나를 살립니다. 하나님의 약속은 희망, 푯대, 삶의 힘, 하나님의 마음, 하나님 자신입니다.

하나님이 약속을 잊어 버릴까요? 기억할까요? 투표 한번 해 볼까요? ‘건망증이 심하다. 아니다’. 하나님은 약속을 잊어 버리지 않으세요. 그래서 지키십니다. 민23:19. 거짓 선지자 발람이 하나님을 두려워하는 중에 한 말입니다. ‘하나님은 사람이 아니시니 거짓말을 하지 않으시고 인생이 아니시니 후회가 없으시도다 어찌 그 말씀하신 바를 행하지 않으시며 하신 말씀을 실행하지 않으시랴’. 마음에 담으면 좋겠습니다.

출애굽기의 이야기는 1:7 때문에 벌어지는 일(출애굽의 방아쇠)입니다. 7절입니다. 메시지 성경이 실감나게 번역하고 있습니다. 6절부터 봅니다. ‘그 후에 요셉이 죽고 그의 모든 형제와 그 시대 사람들이 다 죽었다. 그러나 이스라엘 자손은 계속해서 자녀를 낳았다. 그들은 아이를 많이 낳고 번성하여 그 수가 폭발적으로(무섭게) 늘었고, 마침내 그 땅에 가득 차게 되었다’. 요셉의 도움으로 이집트의 고센 땅에 정착한 70명의 야곱 가족이 430년 만에 남자 성인만 60만명, 가족까지 합하면 2백만 이상의 인구를 가진 세력으로 불어 난 것입니다. 요셉 죽음 후에 400년간 어떤 일이 일어났는지 알 수 없습니다. 겉으로 볼 때는 하나님이 활동하신 어떤 흔적도 찾아 볼 수 없지만 하나님은 여전히 그들과 함께 하셨고, 자신이 하신 약속을 잊지 않으시고 약속을 지켜 나가셨던 것입니다.

이스라엘 자손이 생육하고 번성하는 약속은 창1:28절부터 시작된 하나님의 약속입니다. 아브라함을 부르실 때도 이 약속하셨고(창12:2), 아브라함이 자식 주지 않는다고 툴툴 댈 때, 별 가득한 밤 하늘을 보여주시면서 하신 약속도 이 약속입니다. ‘저 별 셀 수 있거든 세 봐. 못 셀걸. 네 자손이 저 별 처럼 많아 질거야. 내가 약속할 께. 그리고 이 땅, 가나안 땅도 네 소유가 될 거야’ 하면서 짐승 쪼갠 사이를 지나가시면서 약속하십니다. 그때 한 약속이 15:13,14절 입니다. ‘너는 반드시 알라 네 자손이 이방에서 객이 되어 그들을 섬기겠고, 그들은 사백 년 동안 네 자손을 괴롭히리니 그들이 섬기는 나라를 내가 징벌할지며 그 후에 네 자손이 큰 재물을 이끌고 나오리라’ . 이 약속 지키십니다.

약속 중에서 가장 나쁜 약속이 뭘까요? ‘지키지 못할 약속’ 하는 것입니다. 이런 약속은 하면 안됩니다. 물론 불가피하게 할 때는 있습니다. ‘나, 당신이랑 한 날, 한 시에 하나님께 갈거야’. 마음은 굴뚝 같아도 지킬 수 없습니다. 하지만 얼마나 마음이 좋고, 애뜻합니까? 지키지 못해도 할 수 있습니다. 이런 약속 빼고, 지키지 못할 약속은 하면 안됩니다. 지킬 마음도 없으면서 선심쓰듯, 가짜로, 표 얻으려고, 위기를 모면하기 위해 약속하면 나쁜 약속입니다.

하나님의 약속은 지키지 못할 약속도 아니고, 심리적 위안을 주기 위한 사탕 발림의 약속도 아닙니다. 하나님의 약속은 언제나 사실이고, 언제나 이루어질 약속입니다. 하나님은 약속을 지키기 위해 헌신하세요. 사랑하세요. 아들까지 희생하세요. 성령을 보내세요. 고후 1:20에서 바울이 정확히 말했습니다. ’하나님의 모든 약속은 그리스도 안에서 ‘예’가 됩니다. 그러므로 그리스도로 말미암아 우리는 아멘 하면서 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 것입니다’(새번역).

하나님의 약속 앞에서 우리는 ‘예’ 하면 됩니다. 약속 믿고 따라가면 됩니다. 아멘하고, 받을 때 약속이 됩니다. 약속이 있어도 받지 못하면 약속이 될 수 없습니다. 약속 믿고, 믿음에 굳게 서는 것은 신자로서 가져야 할 가장 중요한 소명이고, 책임입니다. 신자가 하나님의 약속을 믿지 않고, 마음에 담지 않는 것보다 불행한 것은 없습니다. 우리는 약속이 가슴에 사무칠 때 힘이 나고, 담대해 지는 사람입니다. 하나님의 귀한 약속이 우리의 마음에 울림을 주고, 감동을 줘서 광야 같은 인생을 무너지지 않고 걸어 갈 수 있게 합니다. ‘내가 너를 사랑한다. 용서한다. 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이룬다. 나를 찾으면 만날 수 있다. 다시 온다’ 약속을 지키는 하나님, 다시한번 마음에 품고 찬송하면서, 선명하게 보십시다. 그래서 굳게 서십시다.

(2) 약속을 지키는 나
두 번째 묵상입니다. 두 번째 묵상은 약속을 지키는 나입니다. 하나님만 약속하고, 지키라고 하는 것은 도리가 아닙니다. 나도 약속 하고, 약속을 지켜야 합니다.

첫 눈이 왜 오는지 아십니까? 추워서 온다구요. 낭만이 없네요!. 첫눈은 ‘아직도 첫눈 오는 날 만나자고, 약속하는 사람들 때문에 내린다’(안도현, 첫 눈 오는날 만나자, 부분) 그래서 오는 것입니다. 약속의 힘이 얼마나 큽니까? 약속은 일을 만들어 내는 힘이 있습니다. 약속하지 않으면 아무 일도 일어나지 않지만, 약속하면 일이 일어납니다. 지키면 더 큰 일이 일어납니다. 약속이 없는 것보다 약속하고 사는 게 좋습니다. 약속하면 책임이 생기고, 책임이 생기기에 애쓰게 됩니다. 애씀이 변화를 가져옵니다. 약속이 없으면 이어령 비어령, 귀에 걸면 귀거리, 코에 걸면 코거리. 이래도 좋고 저래도 좋고. 핑계대다 끝납니다.

약속을 얼마나 해 보셨습니까? 지금도 지키기 위해 孤軍奮鬪하는 약속이 있으십니까? 사람에게도 있고, 하나님에게도 있으면 좋겠습니다. 사람한테만 하지 말고, 하나님께도 약속해야 합니다. 지금 가장 필요한 약속에서 시작해서, 더 깊은 약속으로 나가야 합니다. 쉬운 약속만 하면 안됩니다. ‘부담되는 약속’도 해야 합니다. 부담되는 약속이 헌신을 만들고, 하나님을 깊게 의존하게 만들어 줍니다. 힘든 약속은 지킬수록 뿌듯해 집니다. 감격도 큽니다. 하나님의 임재를 경험합니다.

약속하고, 약속을 지키는 이들은 전부 아름다운 사람들입니다. 하나님이 얼마나 기뻐하시겠습니까? 약속을 지키는 뿌듯함과 간증을 기대해 보겠습니다. 70명의 가족이 2백만이 넘는 가족이 됐습니다. 약속이 만들어 낸 결과입니다. 나의 약속이 어떤 일을 만들어 낼지를 기대하고 소망하십시다. 약속과 함께 주의 구원을 경험하는 여러분들의 인생이 되기를 바라겠습니다

Exodus Story 1: Keeping the Promise (Exodus 1:1-7)

1. The promise
Let’s start the first part of today’s Exodus story with a children’s poem by Kim Myung-soo called “The Promise of the Trees”.

The springtime promise of the trees in the forest is to grow green leaves together.
The summer promise of the trees in the forest is to grow taller and taller together.
The fall promise of the trees in the forest is that they’ll all turn their leaves.
The winter promise of the trees in the forest is that they will survive the blizzard together.

Each season, the trees in the forest make a promise: “In the spring, let’s grow green leaves together. In the summer, let’s chirp and chirp and chirp’. It’s funny, the poet calls it the promise of the trees, but it’s really the promise of nature, and nature’s promise is God’s promise. In Genesis 8:22 we have the ‘promise of God’ after the flood of Noah: ‘As long as the earth is, there shall be no rest for planting and reaping, for cold and heat, for summer and winter, for day and night’. ‘ How’s that for a promise, right? It’s a promise that’s being kept! We’re about to be covered in bright green leaves in a few minutes.

That’s why today’s sermon is called “Promise Keeping. The reason we start the first story of Exodus with ‘promise’ is because the beginning of Exodus begins with ‘God keeping promises’, and the whole of Exodus is the work of ‘God keeping promises’. God promised, God keeps promises, and God works to keep promises, and the events of that work are the stories of Exodus, and the history of salvation.

The “promise” to Jacob is found in Genesis 46:3-4: “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt. I will make you a great nation there, and I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you out of there.” (New Living Translation)

This is what God promised in Exodus 1:1-7. I am so thankful for a faithful God who keeps his promises. He’s not fickle and He keeps His promises, not just at the Exodus, but He makes and keeps promises for us from creation to the end, from alpha to omega. I am grateful and confident.

2. Promise and fulfillment

The Bible can be summarized in two words: promise and fulfillment. Both words are heavy: promise contains deep divine love, fulfillment contains deep divine grace. There can be no promise alone, no fulfillment without promise; there must be both to make salvation and restoration complete. God promises, keeps, and fulfills, so the life of faith is a life of believing the promises, following the promises, and enjoying the fulfillment of the promises. If promises were not so important, the Bible would not be called the Old and New Testaments. The Bible is a book of promises, and it is a book of fulfillment. Between the promises and the fulfillment is us, the believers. The life of faith is a life of “standing firm in the promise” – standing firm and not falling apart because of the promise.

As we will see, the story of the Exodus is the story of God fulfilling his promises. In order to keep his promise, God (1) comes to Israel (1:1-6:30), (2) exiles Israel to part the Red Sea to save them (7:1-15:18), (3) leads them through the wilderness to keep his promise (15:19-18: 17), (4) descends from Mount Sinai to make a covenant with Israel to keep his promises (19:1-24:18), (5) is angry with those who do not believe in a God who keeps his promises and make idols of golden calves (32:1-34:35), and (6) builds a tabernacle to be with them (chapters 25-31, 35-40).

The story of the Exodus summarizes who God is: a God who comes, saves, leads, covenants, is wrathful, and is with them. Who are we talking about? The story of Jesus. The story of Exodus precedes the story of Jesus. That’s why we say, “No Bible without Exodus is possible.” Let’s take a good look at it.

3.Meditation
Today’s text. As we look at the beginning of Exodus, let’s reflect on two things: a promise-keeping God and a promise-keeping me.

(1) A Promise-Keeping God.
Here’s the first reflection: A Promise-Keeping God. Hold on to that. It’s the foundation of faith you need for every moment of your life. It’s a passage from Dante’s Divine Comedy: “Who is your guide and lamp to lead you in the darkness, out of the deep night that covers the valleys of hell?” Do you have a guide, a lamp to guide you when the night is deep and you can’t see the way to go. Hopefully that lamp is a faithful God who keeps his promises. The best guide, the brightest lamp in our lives is God.

Malachi 3:6 says, “I, the Lord, do not change. Therefore, you, descendants of Jacob, will not perish” (New Living Translation). It’s a promise from an unchanging God: ‘You will not perish’. The one who has this promise has a lamp; when I hold the promise, it keeps me alive. God’s promises are hope, a signpost, a life force, the heart of God, God himself.

Will God forget his promises? Will he remember them? Let’s take a poll: ‘He’s forgetful. No’. God doesn’t forget his promises, so he keeps them. Num. 23:19. This is what Balaam the false prophet said in the fear of God: ‘God is not a man, that he should lie, nor is he life, that he should be without remorse: how can he not do what he has said, and perform what he has said’. I want you to take that to heart.

The story of the Exodus is what happens because of 1:7 (the trigger for the Exodus). It’s verse 7. The Message Bible is translating it really well. We start in verse 6, “Afterward Joseph died, and all his brothers and all the people of his day. But the children of Israel continued to have children. They had many children and multiplied, and their numbers exploded (became frightening), and they finally filled the land’. The 70 Jacobite families who settled in the land of Goshen in Egypt with Joseph’s help had grown in 430 years into a force with a population of 600,000 male adults alone and over 2 million when you include their families. We don’t know what happened in the 400 years after Joseph’s death – outwardly there is no sign of God’s activity, but God was still with them, he had not forgotten the promises he had made and he was keeping them.

The promise that the children of Israel would be fruitful and multiply was God’s promise beginning in Genesis 1:28. It’s the promise he made when he called Abraham (Genesis 12:2), and it’s the promise he made when he showed Abraham the starry night sky when Abraham was whining about not having children, saying, “I can count those stars. You can’t. Your descendants will be as numerous as those stars, I promise you. And this land, the land of Canaan, will be yours,’ and He promises as He passes through the cleavage of the beasts. And that’s the promise He makes in 15:13,14. ‘Surely Allah will make your descendants strangers in a foreign land and serve them, and they will afflict your descendants four hundred years, and I will chastise the nation they serve, and afterward your descendants will come out with great riches’ . This promise He keeps.

You know what the worst promise you can make is a promise you can’t keep? You shouldn’t make promises like that. Of course, there are times when you can’t help it: ‘I’m going to go to God one day, one hour, with you.’ You can’t keep it, even if your heart is like a chimney. But how nice, how sweet, you can do it even if you can’t keep it. Except for this, you shouldn’t make any promises you can’t keep. If you make a promise you don’t intend to keep, if you make a promise in good faith, if you make a fake promise, if you make a promise to win votes, if you make a promise to save face, it’s a bad promise.

God’s promises are not promises you can’t keep, nor are they candy-coated promises for psychological comfort. God’s promises are always true, and they will always be fulfilled. Commit to keeping God’s promises. Love him. Sacrifice your son. Send the Holy Spirit. Paul got it right in 2 Corinthians 1:20: “For all the promises of God become ‘yes’ in Christ, so that through Christ we might say, ‘Amen,’ to the glory of God” (NIV).

In the face of God’s promises, all we have to do is say ‘yes’ – believe the promise and follow through. A promise becomes a promise when we say amen and receive it. A promise cannot be a promise if we do not receive it. Believing the promise, standing firm in the faith, is the most important calling and responsibility we have as believers. There is nothing more unfortunate than for a believer to not believe God’s promises, to not take them to heart. We are the kind of people who are strengthened and boldened by promises. God’s precious promises resonate in our hearts, touch us, and enable us to walk through the wilderness of life without falling apart. “I love you. I forgive you. All things work together for good. Seek me and you will find me. I am coming again.” God of promise, let’s hold it in our hearts and sing it again, let’s see it clearly, so we can stand firm.

(2) I Who Keep My Promises
This is the second meditation. The second meditation is on the promise-keeper. It’s not fair to say that only God makes promises and keeps them; I must also make promises and keep them.

Do you know why the first snow comes? It comes because it’s cold. It’s not romantic! The first snow falls because of people who still say, “Let’s meet on the first snowy day,” (Ahn Do-hyun, Let’s meet on the first snowy day, part). How powerful is the power of a promise? A promise has the power to make things happen. If you don’t promise, nothing happens, but if you promise, things happen. Better to live with a promise than no promise. Promises create responsibility, and responsibility creates effort. Commitment makes a difference. Without a promise, it’s just ear to ear, ear to ear, nose to nose. This is good, that is good. It’s all about excuses.

How many promises have you made? Do you still have promises that you struggle to keep? Don’t just make promises to people, make promises to God. Start with the promises you need most right now, and work your way up to deeper promises. Don’t just make easy promises. You should also make “burdensome promises. Burdensome promises create commitment and deepen your dependence on God. Burdensome promises make you proud when you keep them. The thrill is great. You experience God’s presence.

People who make promises and keep them are beautiful people. How pleased God must be. Let’s look forward to the pride and testimony of keeping a promise. A family of 70 has become a family of over 2 million. That’s what promises create. Let’s look forward and hope for what my promise will produce. May it be your life that experiences the salvation of the Lord with a promise.
