흔적, 성령을 알아보다(요14:16~18)

성령 강림에 관한 말씀을 계속 보고 있습니다. 오늘은 “흔적, 성령을 알아보다”는 제목으로 말씀을 보겠습니다.

1. 흔적

제목에 놓치면 안 되는 귀한 문장 하나가 들어 있습니다. “성령을 알아본다.”

신자의 삶에서 성령을 알아보는 것처럼 필요하고, 감격적인 일은 없습니다. 왜 그런가요? 몰트만이라는 신학자가 말한 것처럼 성령은 “생명의 영”이시기에 죽음이 아니라 생명을 주십니다. 살아나게 하십니다. 모세도 살아나게 하셨고, 오순절 다락방의 제자들도 살아나게 하셨습니다.

신자는 성령을 알아봐야 합니다. 알아야 면장을 하는 것처럼 성령도 알아야 성령과 함께할 수 있습니다. 알지 못하고, 알아보지 못하면 성령이라는 말을 수없이 들어도 성령은 “생명의 영”이 될 수 없습니다.

얼마나 알아보고 계십니까? 눈에 보이지도 않는 영을 알아볼 수 있을까요? “알아볼 수 있다” 말하는 게 신앙입니다.

성령은 흔적을 남기시고, 그 흔적을 볼 수 있는 사람은 성령을 알아볼 수 있습니다. 존재하는 모든 것은 흔적을 남깁니다. 흔적은 존재가 남긴 발자국입니다. 사람은 떠나도 흔적이 남고, 바람도 지나간 뒤에는 자취가 남습니다. 호랑이가 지나가면 호랑이 발자국이 남고, 쥐새끼가 지나가면 쥐똥이 남아서 쥐가 있다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 눈에 잘 보이지 않는 미물도 흔적을 남깁니다.

흔적은 한 존재가 세상에 건넨 고백 같은 것입니다. “나 있어.” 흔적은 내가 있다는 증언입니다.

미물도 흔적을 남기는데 크신 성령이 흔적을 안 남기겠습니까? 성령이 모호하고, 애매하게 느껴지는 분들은 성령이 남기신 흔적을 천천히 다시 살펴보시기 바랍니다. 흔적 속에 성령이 있고, 그 흔적을 알아볼 때 성령의 사람이 될 수 있습니다.

감사한 것은 성령을 알 수 있다고 주님이 확인해 주셨다는 것입니다. “그는 진리의 영이라 세상은 능히 그를 받지 못하나니 이는 그를 보지도 못하고 알지도 못함이라 그러나 너희는 그를 아나니 그는 너희와 함께 거하심이요 또 너희 속에 계시겠음이라”(요14:17).

세상은 성령을 알 수 없고, 볼 수 없지만 너희들, 그리스도를 주님으로 고백하고 따르는 너희는 성령을 “알 수 있다.”

이 말씀에 의지해서 모호하고, 답답한 성령에 대한 인식을 버리고 내 안에 내주하시는 성령이 어떤 흔적을 남기고 있는지 발견해야 합니다.

어거스틴의 고백입니다. “당신은 저의 안쪽보다 더 안쪽에 계셨습니다.” 이 말이 사실이라면 성령은 내가 느끼지 못해도 내 감각 너머, 내 무의식 저편, 내 생각 너머, 내 존재의 근원에서 함께하시면서 고아같이 버려두지 않으십니다(요14:18).

깊게 알아서 의지해야 합니다. 알아보지 못하면 성령께서 얼마나 섭섭하고, 안타까우시겠습니까? 부족해도 흔적을 발견하기 위해 애쓰다 보면 더 분명하게 보일 것입니다.

성령은 어떤 일을 하십니까? 어떤 흔적을 남기십니까? 세 가지만 보도록 하겠습니다.

2. 성령의 세 가지 흔적

(1) 교만을 부순다

첫 번째 흔적은 성령께서 우리의 교만을 부순다는 것입니다.

교만은 무서운 단어입니다. 에덴동산에서 하나님을 거부하게 만들었던 죄의 시작이 교만인데, 아직도 득세하면서 관계를 파괴하고, 사랑을 막는 “영적인 암”(C. S. Lewis)입니다. 독을 품고 있는 독사라고 할 수 있습니다.

교만이 얼마나 강합니까? 고통을 만들고, 싸움을 만드는데도 깨지 못합니다. “나”라는 자아에 묶여 내려놓지 못합니다. 이 견고하고 지독한 교만을 성령이 깨십니다. 교만은 충고나 훈계로 꺾이지 않습니다.

바울을 보십시오. 우월감과 엘리트 의식에 사로잡혀 누구의 말도 듣지 않던 사람입니다. 이런 바울이 놀라운 고백을 합니다. “죄인 중에 내가 괴수니라”(딤전1:15). 최상급 죄인이라는 것입니다.

바울이 왜 이렇게 됐습니까? 다메섹 도상에 홀연히 임한 성령의 임하심으로 이렇게 됩니다. 누구도 꺾지 못했던 지독한 교만과 독선과 혈기가 깨져 나갑니다. “하나님, 제가 죄인 중에 괴수입니다.”

바울만이 아닙니다. 성령은 우리도 이렇게 꺾어 나가십니다. 교만이 조금이라도 꺾였다면 기억하시기 바랍니다. 성령께서 하셨구나.

“새 영을 너희 속에 두고 새 마음을 너희에게 주되 너희 육신에서 굳은 마음을 제거하고 부드러운 마음을 줄 것이며”(겔36:26).

성령은 교만을 부수고, 겸손함을 주십니다. “다 주님이 주신 것입니다. 주님의 은혜입니다.” 이런 고백이 나온다면 교만이 여전히 남아 있어도 성령께서 여러분의 삶에 함께하고 있다는 흔적인 줄 알고, 더 겸손한 자리로 나가야 합니다.

(2) 불편하게 한다

두 번째 성령의 흔적은 성령께서 우리를 불편하게 만드신다는 것입니다. 성령은 끊임없이 당신의 사람들을 불편하게 만드십니다.

불편한 것 좋아하는 사람 없지만 성령은 기꺼이 불편하게 하십니다. 사람은 편하면 계속하고, 불편하면 멈춥니다. 아기들 이유식 할 때 젖꼭지에 쓴맛을 묻혀 떼는 것처럼, 성령도 불편하게 해서 우리를 멈추게 하십니다.

브레이크를 거는 겁니다. 양심의 가책을 느끼게 하시고, 자신의 행동과 모습을 보면서 “이건 아닌데”라는 생각이 올라오게 하십니다. 불편함은 성령의 사람들에게 성령께서 하시는 일입니다.

불편하게 하시는 목적은 하나입니다. 세상에 동화되어 영적으로 죽어가는 것을 막고, 하나님의 자녀답게 보존하기 위해서입니다. 불편하지 않으면 똑같아지니까 “영적인 브레이크”를 거시는 것입니다.

“너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라”(롬12:2).

불편한 게 많고, 양심의 가책이 자주 느껴진다면 성령이 함께하신다는 흔적이고, 발자국입니다. 강물을 흘러 올라가는 연어들처럼 성령 충만해서 거슬러 올라가십시다. 죄가 그치고, 순결하고 정결한 하나님의 생명이 자리를 잡게 될 것입니다.

성령 충만해서 세상이 불편한 성도들이 많으면 좋겠습니다. 성도들이 불편해야 정의가 살고, 악이 위축됩니다. 그래야 세상이 좋아집니다.

(3) 시선을 바꾼다

성령의 흔적 세 번째는 성령이 시선을 바꾸게 하신다는 것입니다. 시선은 바꾸기 힘든 것 중 하나입니다.

시선은 한 인생이 세상을 바라보고, 사람을 바라보는 길입니다. 하루아침에 만들어지지 않고 오랜 시간을 거쳐 쌓인 삶의 축적입니다. 시선 속에는 고집이 있고, 우리는 이 시선으로 삶을 해석합니다.

선지자 요나를 보십시오. 앗수르에 당한 게 얼마나 많은지 니느웨로 가서 선포하라는 명령을 거부하고 도망갑니다. 죽다 살아나 다시 가지만 요나의 시선은 바뀌지 않습니다.

니느웨 사람들이 회개하고 하나님의 용서를 받자 뭐라고 합니까? “여호와여 원하건대 이제 내 생명을 거두어 가소서 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 나음이니이다”(욘4:3).

한번 미우면 끝까지 밉고, 어린 시절에 배신을 경험하면 세상을 보는 눈이 평생 곱지 않습니다. 이런 뿌리 깊은 시선을 성령께서 바꾸십니다.

성령께서 바꾸는 시선은 어떤 시선입니까? 지난번에 말씀드린 “입신의 시선”입니다. 땅의 현실만 보던 시선을 들어 올려 하늘을 보게 하는 시선으로 바꾸십니다.

스데반 집사 기억하십니까? 땅의 현실은 돌에 맞아 죽어가는 현실이었지만 성령이 충만했던 스데반이 본 것은 자신을 향해 돌을 던지는 사람들이 아니라 하늘이었습니다. “스데반이 성령 충만하여 하늘을 우러러 주목하여 하나님의 영광과 및 예수께서 하나님 우편에 서신 것을 보고”(행7:55).

하늘에 시선을 둔 스데반은 하나님의 영광과 하나님 우편에 계신 예수 그리스도를 보게 됩니다. 스데반의 마지막 말이 무엇입니까? “주여 이 죄를 그들에게 돌리지 마옵소서”(행7:60).

성령은 땅의 현실에 매여 있는 우리를 들어 올려 하나님을 보게 합니다. 하나님의 신실하심과 하나님의 주권과 약속을 보게 합니다. 이 시선이 주는 삶은 눈부십니다. 세상이 줄 수도 없고 뺏을 수도 없는 초월적인 평안과 깊은 감사를 줍니다.

“평안을 너희에게 끼치노니 곧 나의 평안을 너희에게 주노라 내가 너희에게 주는 것은 세상이 주는 것과 같지 아니하니라 너희는 마음에 근심하지도 말고 두려워하지도 말라”(요14:27).

성령이 주시는 마음이고, 성령이 함께하는 흔적입니다. 이런 평안함이 더 깊어지기를 바랍니다. 한 번의 평안함이 두 번이 되고, 두 번이 열 번이 되어서 하나님을 소망하면서 살아가는 성령의 사람이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

3. 고아가 아니다

성령을 느끼지 못하겠다. 성령이 모호하다. 이런 말 하지 마십시다. 성령께서 보여 주시는 흔적이 없는 곳은 없습니다.

고난 속에도 있고, 성공 속에도 있습니다. 울음 속에도 있고, 웃음 속에서도 있습니다. 성령의 흔적을 알아보는 자가 성령의 사람이고, 성령의 사람은 행복한 사람입니다.

18절에 나오는 주님의 약속이 얼마나 든든하고, 뭉클합니까? “내가 너희를 고아와 같이 버려두지 아니하고 너희에게로 오리라”(요14:18).

고아는 취약하고, 외롭습니다. 힘듭니다. 서럽습니다. 거친 세파에 내던져진 존재입니다. 고아 같지 않은 사람이 있을까요?

하지만 성령은 고아 같은 우리에게 양자의 영을 받게 해서 하나님을 “아바 아버지”로 부르게 하시고, 하나님의 가족이 되게 하십니다. “너희는 다시 무서워하는 종의 영을 받지 아니하고 양자의 영을 받았으므로 우리가 아빠 아버지라고 부르짖느니라”(롬8:15).

지금도 앞으로도 우리는 고아가 아닙니다. 여전히 부족하고, 흔들릴 때 많겠지만 우리는 성령의 사람입니다.

함께하시는 성령, 몰라보지 말고 더 뜨겁게 사모하십시다.

Traces, Recognizing the Holy Spirit (John 14:16–18)

We have been continuing to look at the message of Pentecost. Today we will consider the Word under the title, “Traces: Recognizing the Holy Spirit.”

1. Traces

There is one precious phrase in the title that we must not miss: “recognizing the Holy Spirit.”

In the life of a believer, few things are as necessary and as moving as recognizing the Holy Spirit. Why is that? As the theologian Moltmann said, the Holy Spirit is the “Spirit of Life.” He does not give death, but life. He makes people live again. He made Moses live again, and he made the disciples in the upper room at Pentecost live again.

A believer must recognize the Holy Spirit. As the saying goes, you have to know in order to do anything properly. In the same way, we have to know the Holy Spirit in order to live with the Holy Spirit. If we do not know him, if we do not recognize him, then even if we hear the word “Holy Spirit” countless times, the Holy Spirit cannot become for us the “Spirit of Life.”

How much are you recognizing him? Can we recognize a Spirit whom we cannot see with our eyes? To say, “Yes, we can recognize him,” is faith.

The Holy Spirit leaves traces, and those who can see those traces can recognize the Holy Spirit. Everything that exists leaves traces. A trace is the footprint left behind by a living presence. A person leaves traces even after leaving. Even the wind leaves signs after passing by. When a tiger passes by, it leaves tiger tracks. When a mouse passes by, it leaves droppings, and we know that a mouse is there. Even tiny creatures that are hard to see leave traces.

A trace is like the confession a being makes to the world: “I am here.” A trace is the testimony that something exists.

If even small creatures leave traces, would the great Holy Spirit not leave traces? Those who feel that the Holy Spirit is vague and unclear should slowly look again at the traces the Spirit leaves. The Holy Spirit is present in those traces, and when we recognize those traces, we can become people of the Spirit.

What is so grateful is that the Lord himself confirmed that we can know the Holy Spirit. “He is the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14:17).

The world cannot know or see the Holy Spirit, but you — you who confess Christ as Lord and follow him — you can “know” the Holy Spirit.

Relying on this Word, we must abandon our vague and frustrated understanding of the Holy Spirit and discover what traces the indwelling Spirit is leaving within us.

This is Augustine’s confession: “You were more inward to me than my innermost self.” If this is true, then even when I do not feel him, beyond my senses, beyond my unconscious, beyond my thoughts, at the very root of my being, the Holy Spirit is with me and does not leave me as an orphan (John 14:18).

We must know him deeply and rely on him. If we fail to recognize him, how grieved and sorrowful the Holy Spirit must be. Even if we are lacking, if we keep trying to discover his traces, we will begin to see them more clearly.

What does the Holy Spirit do? What traces does he leave? Let us look at three things.

2. Three Traces of the Holy Spirit

(1) He breaks pride

The first trace is that the Holy Spirit breaks our pride.

Pride is a fearful word. Pride was the beginning of sin that made humanity reject God in the Garden of Eden, and even now it still dominates, destroying relationships and blocking love. It is, as C. S. Lewis said, a “spiritual cancer.” We could call it a poisonous snake full of venom.

How strong pride is. It creates pain and conflict, yet it does not easily break. Bound to the ego called “I,” we cannot lay it down. This firm and terrible pride is what the Holy Spirit breaks. Pride is not broken by advice or rebuke.

Look at Paul. He was seized by superiority and elite consciousness, a man who would not listen to anyone. But this Paul makes an astonishing confession: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost” (1 Timothy 1:15). He is saying that he is the greatest sinner.

How did Paul become like this? It happened through the coming of the Holy Spirit, who suddenly met him on the road to Damascus. The terrible pride, self-righteousness, and anger that no one could break began to shatter. “God, I am the chief of sinners.”

It is not only Paul. The Holy Spirit breaks us in the same way. If your pride has been broken even a little, remember this: the Holy Spirit has done it.

“I will put a new spirit within you, and I will give you a new heart. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).

The Holy Spirit breaks pride and gives humility. “Everything has been given by the Lord. It is all the grace of the Lord.” If this kind of confession comes from you, then even if pride still remains, know that this is a trace that the Holy Spirit is with you, and go further into the place of humility.

(2) He makes us uncomfortable

The second trace of the Holy Spirit is that he makes us uncomfortable. The Holy Spirit continually makes his people uncomfortable.

No one likes being uncomfortable, but the Holy Spirit willingly makes us uncomfortable. When people are comfortable, they continue. When they become uncomfortable, they stop. Just as parents sometimes put a bitter taste on a baby’s bottle to wean the child, the Holy Spirit also makes us uncomfortable so that we will stop.

He applies the brake. He makes us feel the pang of conscience. He causes the thought to rise within us as we look at our actions and our lives: “This is not right.” This discomfort is something the Holy Spirit does in the people of the Spirit.

There is one purpose for this discomfort. It is to keep us from being conformed to the world and dying spiritually, and to preserve us as children of God. If we are not made uncomfortable, we will become just like the world. So the Spirit applies a “spiritual brake.”

“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2).

If there are many things that make you uncomfortable, if you often feel the pang of conscience, that is a trace and a footprint that the Holy Spirit is with you. Like salmon swimming upstream, let us be filled with the Spirit and go against the current. Sin will cease, and the pure and holy life of God will begin to take root.

I hope there will be many believers who, being filled with the Holy Spirit, feel uncomfortable with the world. When believers feel this holy discomfort, justice lives, and evil shrinks back. That is how the world becomes better.

(3) He changes our sight

The third trace of the Holy Spirit is that he changes our sight. Sight is one of the hardest things to change.

Sight is the way one life looks at the world and looks at people. It is not formed overnight. It is the accumulation of life built up over many years. There is stubbornness in our sight, and with that sight we interpret life.

Look at the prophet Jonah. Because of all that Israel had suffered from Assyria, he refused the command to go to Nineveh and proclaim God’s message. He ran away. He nearly died and then went, but Jonah’s sight did not change.

When the people of Nineveh repented and received God’s forgiveness, what did Jonah say? “Now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live” (Jonah 4:3).

Once someone is hated, they remain hated to the end. If a person experienced betrayal in childhood, the eyes with which they see the world may remain dark for life. The Holy Spirit changes this deeply rooted sight.

What kind of sight does the Holy Spirit give? It is what I spoke of last time: the sight of being lifted up. He changes the sight that sees only earthly reality and lifts it up to see heaven.

Do you remember Stephen? The earthly reality was that he was being stoned to death. But what Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, saw was not the people throwing stones at him, but heaven. “Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God” (Acts 7:55).

With his eyes fixed on heaven, Stephen saw the glory of God and Jesus Christ standing at the right hand of God. What were Stephen’s final words? “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (Acts 7:60).

The Holy Spirit lifts us up from being trapped in earthly reality and enables us to see God. He enables us to see God’s faithfulness, God’s sovereignty, and God’s promises. The life this sight gives is radiant. It gives a transcendent peace and deep gratitude that the world cannot give and cannot take away.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid” (John 14:27).

This is the heart the Holy Spirit gives, and it is a trace that the Holy Spirit is with us. May this peace deepen in us. May one moment of peace become two, and two become ten, so that we may live as people of the Spirit, hoping in God.

3. We are not orphans

Let us not say, “I cannot feel the Holy Spirit,” or “The Holy Spirit is vague to me.” There is no place where the Holy Spirit does not show his traces.

They are in suffering and in success. They are in tears and in laughter. The one who recognizes the traces of the Holy Spirit is a person of the Spirit, and the person of the Spirit is a blessed person.

How strong and moving is the promise of the Lord in verse 18? “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:18).

An orphan is vulnerable and lonely. It is hard. It is sorrowful. An orphan is someone thrown into the rough waves of the world. Is there anyone who does not feel like an orphan?

But to us who are like orphans, the Holy Spirit gives the Spirit of adoption, makes us call God “Abba, Father,” and makes us members of God’s family. “You did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, ‘Abba, Father’” (Romans 8:15).

Now and forever, we are not orphans. We are still lacking, and we often waver, but we are people of the Spirit.

Let us not fail to recognize the Holy Spirit who is with us. Let us long for him more deeply and more fervently.
