충성된 일꾼의 정석 (본문: 빌립보서 2장 19~20절)

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 오늘 말씀은 하나님 나라를 위하여 어떠한 사람이 충성된 일꾼인지 디모데와 에바브로디도의 삶을 통하여 살펴보는 말씀입니다.

1. 충성은 선한 일을 위하여 자신을 드리는 것입니다

조선의 충신 엄흥도는 단종의 시신을 거두는 일이 자신과 가족에게 큰 화가 될 수 있다는 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 그는 위험을 피하지 않고 단종의 시신을 수습하여 장사하였습니다. 그의 삶은 선한 일을 위하여 기꺼이 위험과 희생을 감수하는 충성의 모습을 보여 줍니다.

하나님 나라 역시 이러한 충성된 일꾼들을 통하여 세워집니다. 사도 바울이 위대한 복음의 사역을 감당할 수 있었던 것도 바울 곁에서 함께 수고하고 헌신한 충성된 동역자들이 있었기 때문입니다.

2. 디모데는 마음을 같이한 충성된 일꾼입니다

바울은 빌립보 교회를 섬기기 위하여 디모데를 보내고자 하였습니다. 그 이유는 디모데가 바울과 뜻을 같이하며 성도들의 형편을 진실하게 생각하는 사람이었기 때문입니다.
디모데는 자신의 일을 먼저 구하기보다 그리스도 예수의 일을 구하였습니다. 또한 자식이 아버지에게 함같이 바울과 함께 복음을 위하여 수고하였습니다.

참된 충성은 단순히 맡겨진 일을 수행하는 데 있지 않습니다. 다른 사람의 어려움을 자신의 일처럼 여기고 함께 고민하며 함께 아파하는 마음이 있어야 합니다. 교회에는 이러한 디모데와 같은 충성된 일꾼이 필요합니다.

3. 에바브로디도는 자기 목숨을 돌보지 않은 충성된 일꾼입니다

에바브로디도는 빌립보 교회의 성도들을 대신하여 바울을 돕기 위해 로마까지 찾아갔습니다. 그러나 그곳에서 심각한 병에 걸려 죽음에 이를 정도로 위태로운 상황에 놓이게 되었습니다.
그럼에도 에바브로디도는 자신의 어려움보다 자신을 파송한 교회와 바울을 염려하였습니다. 그는 그리스도의 일을 위하여 자기 목숨을 돌보지 않았습니다.

바울은 에바브로디도를 자신의 형제이며 함께 수고하는 자요, 함께 싸우는 군사이며, 교회의 사자요, 돕는 자라고 소개합니다. 이것이 바로 충성된 일꾼의 모습입니다.

4. 충성은 자아와 욕심을 내려놓는 것입니다

하나님의 일을 감당하다 보면 항상 기쁘고 즐거운 일만 있는 것은 아닙니다. 때로는 자존심이 상하고 힘들며 모든 것을 내려놓고 싶은 순간도 있습니다.

그러나 참된 충성은 그러한 순간에도 하나님을 바라보며 맡겨진 사명을 감당하는 것입니다. 사람의 인정이나 칭찬을 받기 위하여 봉사하는 것이 아니라 하나님 앞에서, 하나님을 바라보며 충성하는 것입니다.

그러므로 충성된 일꾼은 자신의 욕심과 자아를 내려놓고 주님의 십자가를 바라보며 맡겨진 사명을 끝까지 감당해야 합니다.

5. 충성된 일꾼은 공동체의 마음을 시원하게 합니다

잠언 25장 13절은 충성된 사자를 더운 날의 얼음냉수에 비유합니다. 충성된 일꾼은 자신을 보낸 사람의 마음을 시원하게 합니다.

교회도 마찬가지입니다. 교회가 건강하게 성장하고 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 공동체로 세워지기 위해서는 디모데와 에바브로디도와 같은 충성된 일꾼이 필요합니다.

충성된 일꾼은 공동체 안에서 형제가 되어 함께 수고하고, 믿음의 선한 싸움을 싸우며, 하나님께서 보내신 사명자로 살아가고, 자신의 시간과 물질과 재능을 기꺼이 사용하여 교회와 하나님 나라를 섬깁니다.

6. 복음에 대한 헌신은 삶을 변화시킵니다

말씀을 맺으며, 저는 세상적인 성공의 길을 내려놓고 대학 캠퍼스에서 복음을 전하며 제자를 세워 온 한 청년 선교사의 삶을 소개하고자 합니다.
그는 자신의 학력과 직업적 성공보다 한 영혼의 가치를 더 귀하게 여기며, 자신의 삶을 하나님께 온전히 드렸습니다. 캠퍼스에서 전도와 제자훈련, 기도에 힘쓰며 한 사람의 영혼이 복음을 받아들이는 것에 머무르지 않고, 장차 또 다른 사람을 살리고 섬기는 삶으로 이어지기를 소망하였습니다. 그리고 지금도 그는 선교사로서 하나님 나라를 위하여 자신의 삶을 드리며 살아가고 있습니다.

예수 그리스도께서는 우리를 대신하여 십자가에서 죽으셨으며, 죽음을 이기시고 부활하셨습니다. 그러므로 그리스도인은 자신에게 베풀어 주신 구원의 은혜를 기억하며, 자신의 삶을 주님께 온전히 드려야 합니다. 우리는 선한 행위로 구원을 얻는 것이 아니라, 이미 받은 구원의 은혜에 감사함으로 더욱 선하고 충성된 삶을 살아가야 합니다.

맺는말

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 하나님께서는 오늘도 충성된 일꾼을 통하여 교회를 세우시고 하나님 나라를 이루어 가십니다.

충성된 일꾼은 자신의 일을 먼저 구하지 않고 그리스도의 일을 구하는 사람입니다. 다른 사람의 형편을 자신의 일처럼 여기며 함께 수고하는 사람입니다. 어려움과 희생 가운데서도 맡겨진 사명을 포기하지 않는 사람입니다. 사람의 칭찬과 인정을 바라보지 않고 하나님 앞에서 충성하는 사람입니다.

우리 모두가 디모데와 에바브로디도와 같은 충성된 일꾼이 되어야 합니다. 우리의 시간과 물질과 재능을 하나님께 드리고, 맡겨진 자리에서 묵묵히 충성하며, 하나님의 마음을 시원하게 하는 성도가 되어야 합니다.

오늘도 주님께서 우리에게 맡겨 주신 자리에서 끝까지 충성하는 삶을 살아가기를 소망합니다. 하나님께서 우리 모두를 통하여 교회를 더욱 아름답게 세우시고 하나님 나라를 확장하여 주시기를 기도합니다.

“내가 죽도록 충성하라 그리하면 내가 생명의 관을 네게 주리라.” (요한계시록 2:10)
우리 모두가 주님께서 기뻐하시는 충성된 일꾼으로 살아가기를 바라겠습니다. 아멘.

The Model of a Faithful Worker(Phil.2:19~20)

Dear brothers and sisters, today’s message considers what kind of person is a faithful worker for the kingdom of God by looking at the lives of Timothy and Epaphroditus.

1. Faithfulness Means Giving Ourselves for What Is Good

Eom Heung-do, a loyal subject of the Joseon Dynasty, knew that recovering the body of the deposed King Danjong could bring great danger upon himself and his family. Yet he did not avoid the risk. He retrieved Danjong’s body and gave him a proper burial. His life shows us what faithfulness looks like: willingly accepting risk and sacrifice for the sake of what is right and good.

The kingdom of God is also built through such faithful workers. The apostle Paul was able to carry out his great ministry of the gospel because faithful coworkers stood beside him, laboring and devoting themselves together with him.

2. Timothy Was a Faithful Worker Who Shared Paul’s Heart

Paul wanted to send Timothy to serve the church in Philippi. The reason was that Timothy was of one mind with Paul and sincerely cared about the circumstances of the believers.

Timothy did not seek his own interests first, but the interests of Jesus Christ. And as a son serves with his father, he labored together with Paul for the sake of the gospel.

True faithfulness is more than simply carrying out an assigned task. It requires a heart that regards the difficulties of others as one’s own, thinks through them together, and shares in their pain. The church needs faithful workers like Timothy.

3. Epaphroditus Was a Faithful Worker Who Did Not Spare His Own Life

Epaphroditus traveled all the way to Rome on behalf of the believers in Philippi in order to help Paul. While there, however, he became seriously ill and came close to death.

Even so, Epaphroditus was more concerned about the church that had sent him and about Paul than he was about his own suffering. For the work of Christ, he did not spare his own life.

Paul describes Epaphroditus as his brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, messenger of the church, and one who ministered to his needs. This is what a faithful worker looks like.

4. Faithfulness Means Laying Down the Self and Our Desires

When we serve in the work of God, everything is not always joyful and pleasant. At times our pride may be wounded. We may become exhausted and even feel like giving everything up.

Yet true faithfulness means continuing to fulfill the mission entrusted to us while looking to God even in such moments. We do not serve in order to receive recognition or praise from people. We serve before God, with our eyes fixed upon Him.

Therefore, a faithful worker must lay down selfish desires and the self, look to the cross of the Lord, and carry out the entrusted mission to the end.

5. A Faithful Worker Refreshes the Heart of the Community

Proverbs 25:13 compares a faithful messenger to the coolness of snow in the heat of harvest. A faithful worker refreshes the heart of the one who sends him.

The same is true of the church. For the church to grow in a healthy way and become a community that pleases God, it needs faithful workers like Timothy and Epaphroditus.

Faithful workers become brothers and sisters within the community and labor together. They fight the good fight of faith, live as people sent by God for His mission, and willingly use their time, possessions, and talents to serve the church and the kingdom of God.

6. Devotion to the Gospel Transforms a Life

As I bring this message to a close, I would like to introduce the life of a young missionary who gave up the path of worldly success in order to preach the gospel and make disciples on university campuses.

He valued the soul of one person more highly than his academic credentials or professional success, and he devoted his life completely to God. On campus, he committed himself to evangelism, discipleship, and prayer. His desire was not merely that one person would receive the gospel, but that this person would eventually go on to bring life to others and serve them as well. Even today, he continues to give his life for the kingdom of God as a missionary.

Jesus Christ died on the cross in our place, and He rose again in victory over death. Therefore, Christians must remember the saving grace they have received and offer their lives wholly to the Lord. We are not saved by good works. Rather, because we have already received salvation by grace, we are called to live lives that are all the more good and faithful out of gratitude.

Conclusion

Dear brothers and sisters, even today God builds His church and advances His kingdom through faithful workers.

A faithful worker does not seek his own interests first, but the interests of Christ. A faithful worker regards the circumstances of others as his own and labors together with them. A faithful worker does not abandon the mission entrusted to him even in hardship and sacrifice. A faithful worker does not seek human praise or recognition, but remains faithful before God.

We must all become faithful workers like Timothy and Epaphroditus. We should offer our time, possessions, and talents to God, remain quietly faithful in the place entrusted to us, and become believers who refresh the heart of God.

May we live faithfully to the end in the place the Lord has entrusted to us today. I pray that through each one of us, God will build His church more beautifully and extend His kingdom.

“Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)

May we all live as faithful workers who bring joy to the heart of our Lord. Amen.
