로마서 55: 사람은 혼자가 아니다(롬8:34)

1. 혼자가 아니다
정호승 시인의 「수선화에게」라는 시 한 대목을 읽고 말씀을 시작하겠습니다.

울지 마라
외로우니까 사람이다
살아간다는 것은 외로움을 견디는 일이다
공연히 오지 않는 전화를 기다리지 말라
눈이 오면 눈길을 걷고
비가 오면 빗길을 걸어가라
가끔은 하나님도 외로워서 눈물을 흘리신다.

공감이 되시지요? 외롭지 않으면 좋겠지만 외롭지 않은 인생이 어디에 있겠습니까? 이래서 외롭고, 저래서 쓸쓸합니다. 홀로 와서 홀로 가는 인생이기에 외롭고 쓸쓸할 수밖에 없습니다.

나이 들면 더 외롭고, 등 긁어 주는 사람도 없으면 얼마나 더 허전하겠습니까?

시인은 견디는 수밖에 없다고 하는데, 잘 견디면 좋겠지만 그렇지 못할 때가 많습니다. 외로운 순간이 올 텐데 어떻게 견디시겠습니까? 외로움을 피할 수는 없어도 지고 싶지는 않습니다. 이길 수 있는 길이 있을까요?

시인은 말합니다.

“공연히 오지 않는 전화를 기다리지 말라.”

사람이 외로움을 달래 줄 수 있지만 사람이 채워 주는 외로움은 오히려 빈자리만 크게 만들 수 있기에 여기에 목매지 말라는 것입니다.

대신 무엇을 하라는 것입니까? 찾는 이가 없어 외로워서 눈물을 흘리실지도 모르는 하나님을 찾으라는 것입니다.

물론 비유입니다. 시인이 하나님을 얼마나 찾았는지는 모르겠지만, 하나님을 만날 때 외로움이 사라진다는 것을 알았던 것 같습니다.

어떻게 생각하세요? 하나님이 우리가 가진 외로움, 쓸쓸함, 허무함, 허전함, 막막함을 바꾸실 수 있다고 생각하십니까? 바꾸실 수 있다고 생각하는 사람들이 신자들입니다.

오늘 말씀의 제목처럼 사람은 혼자가 아닙니다. 함께하는 사람이 있어서 혼자가 아니고, 하나님이 함께하시기에 혼자가 아닙니다. 어떤 순간에도 하나님은 함께하십니다.

성경이 가장 보여 주고 싶어 하는 것이 무엇인지 아십니까? 하나님은 당신의 피조물인 사람에게 지대한 관심을 가지고 계시다는 것입니다.

하나님은 무관심한 절대자가 아닙니다. 잘못하면 진노하시고, 배반하면 슬퍼하십니다. 회개하면 기뻐하시고, 힘들면 위로해 주십니다. 찾으면 반응하시고, 도망가면 찾아오십니다. 요나와 엘리야를 찾아오셨습니다.

사람은 하나님의 관심 밖에 있지 않고 관심 안에 있습니다. 하나님을 고백하지 않는다면 모를까, 하나님을 믿는다면 자신을 혼자라고 생각하면 안 됩니다.

“나는 가난하고 궁핍하오나 주께서는 나를 생각하시오니”(시40:17).

“여인이 어찌 그 젖 먹는 자식을 잊겠으며 자기 태에서 난 아들을 긍휼히 여기지 않겠느냐 그들은 혹시 잊을지라도 나는 너를 잊지 아니할 것이라. 내가 너를 내 손바닥에 새겼고 너의 성벽이 항상 내 앞에 있나니”(사49:15-16).

위로가 되지 않으십니까? 사람은 누구도 버려진 존재가 아닙니다. 성경의 수많은 사건과 메시지를 봐서라도 혼자라고 생각하면 안 됩니다.

“너희가 늙을 때까지 내가 너희를 안고 다니고, 너희가 백발이 될 때까지 내가 너희를 품고 다니겠다. 내가 너희를 지었으니, 내가 너희를 품고 다니겠고, 안고 다니겠고, 또 구원하여 주겠다”(사46:4).

외로울 때마다 새기면 좋겠습니다. 그런데도 하나님을 찾지 않고 가까이하지 않으니 하나님이 외로워서 눈물을 흘리시는 것입니다.

2. 정죄할 수 없다

오늘 본문에는 간구하시는 주님의 모습이 나옵니다. 깊이 기도하시는 모습입니다.

여기서는 ① 십자가에 달리시고, ② 부활하시고, ③ 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉아 계시는 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 간구하시는 것으로 나오지만, 성부 하나님과 성령 하나님도 우리를 위해 간구하십니다.

성부 하나님은 기도를 들으시고 응답하십니다. 성자 그리스도는 우리를 위해 중보하십니다. 성령은 탄식하시면서 우리의 기도를 도우십니다.

왜 우리를 위해 기도하십니까? 우리를 위하시기 때문에 기도하시고(롬8:31), 우리를 위해 자기 아들을 아끼지 않고 내주셨기에 기도하시고(롬8:32), 허물 많은 우리를 의롭다 하사 받아 주신 사랑이 있기에 기도하십니다(롬8:33).

내가 있다. 너는 혼자가 아니다. 힘내라. 인생의 쓸쓸함에 지지 말라.

우리를 위하시고, 우리에게 주시고, 우리를 의롭다 하사 받아 주신 성부의 은혜가 있기에 성자는 그런 우리를 위해 간구해 주십니다.

우리를 위해 간구하시는 그리스도가 어떤 분인지 보십시오.

“누가 정죄하리요 죽으실 뿐 아니라 다시 살아나신 이는 그리스도 예수시니 그는 하나님 우편에 계신 자요 우리를 위하여 간구하시는 자시니라”(롬8:34).

이 말씀은 다섯 개의 질문 중 네 번째 질문입니다. 누가 정죄하겠는가? 정죄할 수 없다는 것입니다.

정죄라는 말은 죄가 있다는 선고입니다. 그러나 그리스도 안에 있기에 죄가 없다는 선고를 받는 것입니다.

다행 아닌가요? 죄로 인해 정죄한다면 정죄받지 않을 사람이 누가 있겠습니까? 너도 죄인이고, 나도 죄인이고, 모두 죄인입니다. 죄를 지었다면 죄 값을 받아야 합니다.

그러나 하늘 법정에서는 이런 죄인도 하나님의 구원에 참여하고 용서받을 기회를 얻습니다.

“그러므로 이제 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 자에게는 결코 정죄함이 없다”(롬8:1).

정죄함이 없는 이유는 그리스도 때문입니다. 우리의 죄를 대신하여 십자가에서 죽으셨고, 죽음으로 끝나지 않고 우리를 의롭다 하시기 위하여 살아나셨습니다(롬4:25). 지금은 하나님 우편에 앉아 우리를 다스리시며 우리를 위해 간구하십니다. 그래서 죄인이지만 구원받은 하늘의 백성이 되었습니다. 경이로운 일이 일어난 것입니다.

십자가의 죽음도, 부활도, 승천도, 우리를 위해 기도해 주시는 것도 모두 경이로운 일입니다.

R.A.Torrey(1856-1928)의 글을 하나 소개하겠습니다.

“나는 그리스도의 십자가를 바라보고 내 죄에 대한 속죄가 이루어졌음을 안다. 나는 열린 무덤과 부활하시고 승천하신 주님을 바라보고 그 속죄가 받아들여졌음을 안다. 내 죄가 아무리 많고 클지라도 더 이상 내게는 단 하나의 죄도 남아 있지 않다. 내 죄가 산처럼 높았을지라도 부활의 빛 안에서 그것들을 덮는 속죄는 하늘처럼 높다. 내 죄가 바다처럼 깊었을지라도 부활의 빛 안에서 그것들을 삼켜 버리는 속죄는 영원처럼 깊다.”

그리스도께서 이루신 경이로운 일에 대한 신뢰가 깊습니다. 이런 깊은 신뢰가 우리에게도 있기를 바랍니다. 이 신뢰가 쓸쓸함 많은 우리의 삶에 위로와 자유와 평안을 선물할 것입니다.

3. 주님의 기도

부활하사 하늘 보좌 우편에 계신 주님이 지금, 현재 우리를 위해 간구하십니다.

기도해 주시는 이유는 관심이 있기 때문입니다. 관심이 없는데 기도하는 법은 없습니다. 우리는 모르고 지나갈 때가 태반이지만 주님은 기도하십니다.

의롭다 하신 당신의 자녀이기에 기도하시고, 끝까지 함께하셔서 영화로운 자로 세우시기 위해 기도하십니다.

베드로가 세 번 부인할 것을 예고하시면서 주님이 무엇이라고 하셨습니까?

“시몬아, 시몬아, 보라 사탄이 너희를 밀 까부르듯 하려고 요구하였으나 그러나 내가 너를 위하여 네 믿음이 떨어지지 않기를 기도하였노니”(눅22:31-32).

베드로는 자신이 얼마나 쉽게 주님을 부인할 사람인지, 사탄의 유혹에 얼마나 약한지 몰랐습니다. 그러나 주님은 알고 계셨고 베드로를 위해 기도해 주셨습니다.

베드로가 완전히 무너지지 않고 돌아올 수 있었던 것은 자신의 능력이 아니라 주님이 기도해 주셨기 때문입니다.

딱 우리의 모습입니다. 주님이 기도해 주시는 것도 모르고 제 잘난 맛에 살 때가 얼마나 많습니까?

주님은 기도해 주십니다. 외로울 때가 많기에, 연약하기에, 두려움이 많기에, 작은 일에도 잘 흔들리기에, 고비마다 힘든 일이 많기에 기도해 주십니다.

힘내라. 일어나라. 담대하라. 너는 혼자가 아니다. 내가 함께한다. 쓸쓸해하지 마라. 외로움에 지지 말라. 나는 소망이고, 사랑이고, 기쁨이다. 나와 함께하자.

신자 된 자가 가지는 영광이고 은혜이며 위로입니다. 우리는 혼자가 아닙니다. 기도해 주시는 분이 계시는 한 혼자가 될 수 없습니다.

감탄과 경이를 가지고 우리를 위해 기도하시는 주님의 깊은 간구를 바라보면서 기도받는 자답게 살아가십시다.

기도해 주시는 성부, 성자, 성령 하나님을 외롭게 만들어 눈물짓게 하지 마십시다. 매 순간 의지하고 신뢰하며 동행하면서, 선물로 주신 인생을 감사와 사랑으로 살아가는 복되고 보기 좋은 인생이 되기를 바라겠습니다.

Romans 55: Man Is Not Alone (Romans 8:34)

1. Man Is Not Alone

I would like to begin by reading a passage from the poem “To the Daffodil” by the poet Jeong Ho-seung.

Do not cry.
To be human is to be lonely.
To live is to endure loneliness.
Do not vainly wait for a call that will not come.
When it snows, walk along the snowy road.
When it rains, walk along the rain-soaked road.
Sometimes even God sheds tears because He is lonely.

You can relate to this, can’t you? It would be good if we were not lonely, but whose life is free from loneliness? We are lonely for this reason and desolate for another. We come into this world alone and leave it alone, so loneliness and desolation seem unavoidable.

As we grow older, we become even lonelier. How much emptier must life feel when there is not even someone to scratch our back?

The poet says that there is nothing to do but endure it. It would be good if we could endure it well, but often we cannot. Lonely moments will come. How will you endure them? We may not be able to avoid loneliness, but we do not want to be defeated by it. Is there a way to overcome it?

The poet says:

“Do not vainly wait for a call that will not come.”

People can ease our loneliness, but when we rely on people to fill it, the empty place may only become larger. The poet is telling us not to cling to that.

Then what should we do? We should seek God, who may Himself be shedding tears because no one seeks Him and He is lonely.

Of course, this is a poetic image. I do not know how deeply the poet himself sought God, but he seems to have known that loneliness disappears when we meet God.

What do you think? Do you believe that God can transform the loneliness, desolation, emptiness, hollowness, and helplessness within us? Those who believe that He can are believers.

As today’s sermon title declares, man is not alone. We are not alone because there are people who are with us, and we are not alone because God is with us. God is with us in every moment.

Do you know what the Bible most desires to show us? It is that God takes a profound interest in human beings, whom He created.

God is not an indifferent Absolute. When people do wrong, He becomes angry. When they betray Him, He grieves. When they repent, He rejoices. When they suffer, He comforts them. When they seek Him, He responds. When they run away, He comes looking for them. He came looking for Jonah and Elijah.

Human beings are not outside God’s concern but within it. Those who do not confess God may think otherwise, but those who believe in God must not think that they are alone.

“I am poor and needy, yet the Lord thinks upon me” (Psalm 40:17).

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me” (Isaiah 49:15–16).

Does this not comfort you? No one is an abandoned being. In view of the countless events and messages of Scripture, we must not think that we are alone.

“Even to your old age I will carry you, and even to your gray hairs I will bear you. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will bear you and rescue you” (Isaiah 46:4).

It would be good to inscribe this upon our hearts whenever we feel lonely. Yet when we do not seek God or draw near to Him, we make God lonely enough to shed tears.

2. No One Can Condemn Us

In today’s passage, we see the Lord interceding for us. He is praying deeply for us.

The passage presents Christ as the One who ① died on the cross, ② rose from the dead, and ③ is seated at the right hand of God’s throne, interceding for us. Yet God the Father and God the Holy Spirit are also involved in prayer for us.

God the Father hears our prayers and answers them. God the Son intercedes for us. God the Holy Spirit helps us in our prayers with groanings.

Why do they pray for us? God prays for us because He is for us (Romans 8:31), because He did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us (Romans 8:32), and because He loved us enough to justify and receive us despite our many faults (Romans 8:33).

I am here. You are not alone. Take courage. Do not be defeated by the desolation of life.

Because of the grace of the Father, who is for us, gives to us, and justifies and receives us, the Son intercedes for us.

Look at who Christ is—the One who intercedes for us.

“Who is he who condemns? It is Christ Jesus who died, and more than that, was raised, who is at the right hand of God and who also intercedes for us” (Romans 8:34).

This is the fourth of the five questions in this passage. Who can condemn us? The answer is that no one can condemn us.

Condemnation is the declaration that a person is guilty. Yet because we are in Christ, we receive the declaration that no guilt remains against us.

Is this not good news? If everyone were condemned according to sin, who could escape condemnation? You are a sinner, I am a sinner, and everyone is a sinner. Those who have sinned must pay the penalty for their sin.

Yet in the heavenly court, even such sinners are given the opportunity to participate in God’s salvation and receive forgiveness.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).

There is no condemnation because of Christ. He died on the cross in our place for our sins. His work did not end with His death. He was raised for our justification (Romans 4:25). He now sits at the right hand of God, rules over us, and intercedes for us. Therefore, although we are sinners, we have become saved citizens of heaven. Something wondrous has happened.

His death on the cross, His resurrection, His ascension, and His prayer for us are all wondrous works.

Let me introduce a passage written by R. A. Torrey (1856–1928).
“I look at the cross of Christ, and I know that atonement has been made for my sin. I look at the open tomb and at the risen and ascended Lord, and I know that the atonement has been accepted. However many and great my sins may have been, not one sin now remains against me. Though my sins were as high as a mountain, in the light of the resurrection the atonement that covers them is as high as heaven. Though my sins were as deep as the sea, in the light of the resurrection the atonement that swallows them up is as deep as eternity.”

This reveals deep confidence in the wondrous work accomplished by Christ. May we also possess such deep confidence. This confidence will give comfort, freedom, and peace to our lives, which are so often filled with loneliness.

3. The Lord’s Prayer for Us

The Lord, who rose from the dead and is seated at the right hand of the heavenly throne, is praying for us now, at this very moment.

He prays for us because He is concerned about us. No one prays for someone in whom they have no interest. Though we often pass through life without realizing it, the Lord continues to pray for us.

He prays because we are His children whom He has justified. He prays so that He may remain with us to the end and establish us as people of glory.

When Jesus foretold that Peter would deny Him three times, what did He say?

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail” (Luke 22:31–32).

Peter did not know how easily he would deny the Lord or how weak he was before Satan’s temptation. But the Lord knew, and He prayed for Peter.

Peter was able to return without being completely destroyed, not because of his own strength, but because the Lord had prayed for him.

This is exactly what we are like. How often do we live in pride, unaware that the Lord is praying for us?

The Lord prays for us. He prays because we often feel lonely, because we are weak, because we have many fears, because even small things easily shake us, and because we face hardship at every turning point.

Take courage. Rise up. Be bold. You are not alone. I am with you. Do not be desolate. Do not be defeated by loneliness. I am your hope, your love, and your joy. Walk with Me.

This is the glory, grace, and comfort of being a believer. We are not alone. As long as there is One who prays for us, we can never be alone.

With wonder and amazement, let us look upon the Lord’s deep intercession for us and live as those who are being prayed for.

Let us not make the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who pray for us, lonely enough to shed tears. May we rely on them, trust them, and walk with them at every moment. May we live the life given to us as a gift with gratitude and love, and may our lives become blessed and beautiful.
