하나님께 영광을(고전 6:19~20)

1. 하나님의 영광은 무엇인가

한 주간 얼마나 수고하셨습니까. 월요일부터 금요일까지 살아가는 일이 사실 쉽지 않습니다. 여러 가지 힘든 일도 있고 예상하지 못한 일도 일어납니다. 그래도 하나님께서 우리에게 주일을 주셔서 안식하고 회복한 뒤 다시 한 주를 시작하게 하시니 감사합니다.

제가 설교하는 것은 1년 만인 것 같습니다. 설교하는 것도 힘들지만 설교보다 더 힘든 것은 준비하는 일이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 잠잘 때도 생각나고 낮에도 계속 생각이 났습니다. 그러면서 목사님의 마음을 조금은 알 것 같았습니다.

지난주 박병남 집사님의 설교에는 ‘달란트’ 이야기가 있었습니다. 그 말씀을 들으며 저 자신에게 물어보았습니다. ‘나는 작은 일에 감사함으로 충성하고 있는가. 작은 일을 불평 없이 감당하고 있는가.’ 그런데 제게 감사했던 것은 주님께서 우리에게 큰일이 아니라 작은 일에 충성하라고 하셨다는 점입니다. 우리의 연약함을 아시고 우리가 할 수 있는 작은 일에 충성하라고 하신 것이 얼마나 감사한지 모릅니다. ‘그러면 나도 할 수 있겠다’는 생각이 들었습니다.

1년 전에는 학개서를 중심으로 제1성전과 제2성전에 관한 말씀을 나누었습니다. 제1성전은 다윗이 준비하고 솔로몬이 지은 솔로몬 성전입니다. 학개 선지자는 이것을 ‘이전 영광’이라고 했습니다. 제2성전은 바벨론 포로에서 돌아온 뒤 스룹바벨을 중심으로 지은 성전입니다. 이것을 ‘나중 영광’이라고 했습니다.

스룹바벨 성전이 완성되었을 때 젊은 사람들은 기뻐했습니다. 성전이 다시 세워졌기 때문입니다. 그러나 옛 솔로몬 성전을 보았던 어르신들은 통곡했습니다. 이전 성전에 비하면 너무 초라했기 때문입니다. 그렇다면 학개 선지자는 왜 초라한 스룹바벨 성전의 나중 영광이 이전 영광보다 크다고 했을까요.

성전을 화려하게 꾸몄기 때문이 아닙니다. 성전의 주인이신 주님께서 그 성전에 임하시기 때문입니다. 하나님의 영광은 건물의 크기와 화려함에 달려 있지 않았습니다.

오늘 우리가 함께 생각하려는 것도 바로 이 ‘하나님의 영광’입니다. 우리는 하나님의 영광이라는 말을 많이 사용하지만, 막상 그것이 무엇이냐고 물으면 조금 막연하게 느껴질 때가 있습니다.

오늘 본문은 말씀합니다.

“너희 몸은 너희가 하나님께로부터 받은 바 너희 가운데 계신 성령의 전인 줄을 알지 못하느냐 너희는 너희 자신의 것이 아니라 값으로 산 것이 되었으니 그런즉 너희 몸으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리라.”

우리 몸은 성령의 전입니다. 성령께서 우리 안에 계십니다. 그리고 우리는 우리의 것이 아닙니다. 예수 그리스도께서 죄인인 우리를 피 값으로 사셨습니다. 그래서 성경은 우리에게 “하나님께 영광을 돌리라”고 말씀합니다.

그렇다면 하나님께 영광을 돌린다는 것은 무엇일까요.

2. 하나님께 영광을 돌리라

(1) 하나님의 영광을 무겁고 중요하게 여기라

영광에 해당하는 히브리어는 ‘카보드’입니다. 이 말에는 원래 ‘무겁다’, ‘중요하다’는 뜻이 있습니다. 따라서 하나님께 영광을 돌린다는 것은 하나님을 무겁고 중요한 분으로 받아들이는 것입니다. 하나님의 거룩하심과 임재를 중요하게 여기고, 하나님의 말씀에 귀를 기울이며 순종하는 것입니다.

“태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라.”

이 말씀을 무겁고 중요하게 받아들이는 것입니다.

“주 예수여 오시옵소서.”

이 말씀도 무겁고 중요하게 받아들이는 것입니다.

사람만 그런 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 만드신 자연과 모든 피조물도 하나님의 질서에 따라 존재합니다. 봄에는 개나리와 진달래가 피고, 여름에는 여름꽃이 피며, 가을에는 국화가 핍니다. 모든 피조물이 하나님께서 정하신 질서와 법칙을 따라 움직입니다. 온 우주와 인간과 나무와 자연과 역사가 하나님의 광대하심과 영광을 나타냅니다. 우리가 느끼지 못할 때에도 온 땅에는 하나님의 영광이 충만합니다.

그런데 우리는 하나님의 영광에 대하여 한 가지 오해를 하기 쉽습니다.

운동선수가 금메달을 따거나 축구선수가 골을 넣은 뒤 “하나님께 영광을 돌립니다”라고 말하는 모습을 볼 때가 있습니다. 배우가 상을 받은 뒤 하나님께 영광을 돌린다고 말하기도 합니다. 물론 그것이 나쁜 것은 아닙니다.

그러나 여기에서 우리가 잘못 생각할 수 있습니다. 마치 내가 무엇인가 대단한 일을 해서 하나님의 영광을 더해 드리는 것처럼 생각하는 것입니다.

우리가 하나님의 영광에 무엇을 더할 수 있겠습니까.

상을 받은 한 사람만 하나님께 영광을 돌린다면 상을 받지 못한 수많은 사람들은 하나님의 영광을 가리는 것입니까. 골을 넣은 축구선수는 하나님께 영광을 돌리고, 골을 넣지 못한 선수들은 영광을 돌리지 못하는 것입니까. 대학에 진학하면 하나님의 영광이고 진학하지 못하면 하나님의 영광을 가리는 것입니까.

그렇지 않습니다.

우리와 상관없이 하나님은 이미 지극히 영광스러운 분입니다. 우리가 하나님의 영광을 더할 수도 없고 뺄 수도 없습니다. 우리가 할 수 있는 것은 그 하나님의 영광을 인정하는 것입니다.

제가 아파트 어르신들과 이야기하다 재미있는 말을 들었습니다. 나이가 들어 잘 살려면 ‘국어와 산수’를 잘해야 한다는 것입니다. 그래서 “국어가 무엇입니까?” 물으니 ‘주제’라고 하셨습니다. “그러면 산수는 무엇입니까?” 했더니 ‘분수’라고 하셨습니다.

주제를 알고 분수를 알아야 한다는 것입니다.

오늘 우리의 주제는 하나님의 영광입니다. 그리고 우리의 분수는 나 자신이 누구인지 아는 것입니다. 내가 하나님의 영광을 만들어 내는 사람이 아니라, 이미 영광스러우신 하나님을 인정하는 사람이라는 사실을 아는 것입니다.

하나님의 영광은 코로나 때에도 있었습니다. 우리가 어려울 때에도 있었습니다. 환경이 달라진다고 하나님의 영광이 달라지는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 변함없이 영광스러운 분이십니다.

(2) 예수 그리스도를 내 인생의 주인으로 모시라

그렇다면 하나님의 영광은 무엇입니까.

하나님의 영광은 무엇보다 하나님 존재 자체의 영광입니다. 하나님의 본질과 속성, 아름다움과 위대하심과 완전하심이 밖으로 비추어 나타나는 것이 하나님의 영광이라고 할 수 있습니다.

히브리서는 예수 그리스도를 하나님의 영광의 광채시며 그 본체의 형상이라고 말씀합니다. 출애굽기에서 모세가 시내산에서 십계명을 받을 때에도 여호와의 영광은 맹렬한 불꽃같이 나타났습니다. 하나님 그분 자체가 영광이십니다.

그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 살아야 하겠습니까.

저는 흔히 사용하는 ‘하나님의 영광을 위해서 산다’는 말을 생각해 보았습니다. 하나님께 무엇인가를 보태 드리는 것처럼 생각해서는 안 됩니다. 오히려 하나님의 영광에 의하여 사는 삶이라고 말할 수 있을 것입니다.

그 첫 번째 모습은 예수 그리스도가 내 인생의 주인이 되는 것입니다.

오늘 본문은 우리가 “값으로 산 것이 되었다”고 말씀합니다. 예수님께서 피 값으로 우리를 사셨습니다. 그렇다면 이제 내 인생의 주인은 내가 아니라 예수 그리스도입니다.

우리 믿는 사람들에게는 십자가가 인생의 중심에 있어야 합니다. 십자가는 그리스도의 능력입니다. 이것을 깨닫게 되는 것이 하나님의 은혜입니다.

그 은혜를 깨닫게 되면 나는 내 인생의 왕좌에서 내려옵니다. 그동안 내 인생의 운전대를 내가 붙잡고 있었다면 이제 그것을 예수님께 맡기는 것입니다. 나는 조수석에 앉고 내 인생을 예수님께서 주관하시도록 맡기는 것입니다.

그때 우리의 삶이 하나님의 계획과 일치하게 되고 우리가 말하는 풍성한 삶이 나타납니다. 이것을 위해 우리는 계속해서 노력하고 거룩해져 가는 것입니다.

(3) 작은 일상에서 감사하고 섬기라

그렇다면 하나님의 영광에 의하여 사는 삶은 언제나 거창한 것일까요. 그렇지 않습니다.

성경은 “너희가 먹든지 마시든지 무엇을 하든지 다 하나님의 영광을 위하여 하라”고 말씀합니다. 하나님의 영광은 거창한 일에만 있는 것이 아니라 우리가 날마다 반복하는 가장 소박한 일상, 먹고 마시는 것 가운데에도 있습니다.

아침에 눈을 떴을 때 숨을 쉴 수 있는 것, 따뜻한 밥을 먹을 수 있는 것, 따뜻한 차 한 잔을 마실 수 있는 것, 이 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜입니다.

“하나님, 오늘도 밥을 먹게 해 주셔서 감사합니다.”

“따뜻한 차 한 잔을 마실 수 있어서 감사합니다.”

이렇게 하나님께 감사하며 살아가는 것입니다. 거창한 일을 해내는 것만이 하나님의 영광이 아닙니다. 하나님께 감사하고 하나님이 주신 것을 누리는 그 모습 자체를 하나님께서 기뻐하십니다.

웨스트민스터 소요리문답 첫 번째 문답은 인간의 제일 되는 목적이 하나님을 영화롭게 하고 그분을 영원토록 즐거워하는 것이라고 말합니다. 구원받은 하나님의 백성이 세상의 어떤 것보다 하나님 한 분을 기쁨과 보화로 삼고 만족할 때 하나님의 가치와 아름다움이 가장 크게 드러나는 것입니다.

저는 현재 원당에 있는 실버케어 기관에서 오후 네 시간 정도 일을 하고 있습니다. 두 시간 정도는 프로그램을 보조하고 어르신들에게 간식을 드리는 일을 하고, 나머지 시간에는 차를 운전하여 어르신들을 집까지 모셔다드립니다.

그 일을 하면서 기뻤던 것이 몇 가지 있습니다.

먼저 출퇴근길이 막히지 않습니다. 예전에 오랫동안 직장생활을 할 때는 도심으로 출근하면서 교통 혼잡 때문에 스트레스를 많이 받았습니다. 그런데 지금은 집에서 원당까지 차로 15분 정도면 갑니다. 출근길부터 마음이 편안합니다.

또 하나는 어르신들에게 간식을 드리는 일입니다. 유니폼을 입고 한 분 한 분께 간식을 가져다드립니다. 어떤 어르신들은 대접받는 것을 미안해하기도 하십니다. 하지만 저는 그 일을 하는 것이 참 좋습니다.

어떤 분들은 저를 보면서 “그렇게 일해서 돈이 되느냐”고 묻기도 합니다. 그러나 저는 그것보다 내가 한 사람 한 사람을 섬길 수 있다는 사실이 좋습니다.

운전하는 일도 그렇습니다. 저는 원래 운전을 빨리 하지 못하고 천천히 하는 편입니다. 그런데 그것이 어르신들을 모실 때는 오히려 잘 맞습니다. 정해진 길을 천천히, 신호를 지키면서 가면 됩니다. 복잡하게 머리를 쓰지 않아도 됩니다. 요즘은 그 운전도 재미있게 하고 있습니다.

이런 작은 일에도 하나님의 영광이 있습니다.

청소하는 한 소년에 관한 이야기도 있습니다. 그 소년은 늘 즐거운 얼굴로 청소를 했다고 합니다. 누군가 “너는 왜 그렇게 청소하면서도 즐거워하느냐”고 물었습니다. 그 소년은 이렇게 대답했습니다.

“저는 하나님이 만드신 세상을 깨끗하게 만들고 있기 때문에 기쁩니다.”

작은 일 하나도 하나님과 연결하여 받아들이는 것입니다.

그리고 저는 우리 성도님들의 삶 자체가 하나님의 영광이라고 생각합니다.

우리가 자녀나 손주들을 볼 때를 생각해 보십시오. 아이들이 우리에게 엄청난 돈이나 대단한 출세를 가져다주기 때문에 예쁜 것이 아닙니다. 그저 내 곁에 있어 주고 “할아버지, 할머니” 하며 웃어 주는 것만으로도 기쁩니다.

하나님 아버지께서 우리를 바라보시는 마음도 이와 같다고 생각합니다.

지나온 세월 동안 수많은 고난과 풍파를 믿음으로 견디어 내고, 오늘도 주일 아침에 교회에 나와 하나님의 사람들과 함께 예배드리는 것, 작은 교회이지만 함께 걸어와 자리를 지키는 것 자체가 하나님의 큰 영광이라고 생각합니다.

제가 일하는 실버케어 기관에는 스물네 분의 어르신이 계십니다. 그분들을 위해 국가에서 많은 비용을 지원합니다. 왜 그렇습니까. 그 어르신들이 젊은 시절 산업화를 위해 수고했고, 민주화를 위해 역할을 감당했고, 가정을 지키고 사회를 구성하는 데 큰 역할을 했기 때문입니다. 그래서 이제 사회가 그분들을 돌보는 것입니다.

우리 성도님들은 여기에 한 가지를 더 가지고 있습니다.

평생 자녀들을 눈물과 기도로 키우셨고, 주님의 교회를 지키셨고, 신앙의 유산을 이어오셨습니다. 그렇게 살아온 삶 자체가 하나님의 영광을 드러내는 삶입니다.

때로는 나이가 들면서 “나는 이제 할 수 있는 것이 없다”고 생각할 수 있습니다. 몸도 예전 같지 않고 가진 것도 많지 않아 “내가 어떻게 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있을까” 생각할 수 있습니다.

그러나 그렇지 않습니다.

오늘도 믿음을 지키고, 교회를 찾아오고, 함께 예배하며, 작은 일에 감사하고, 곁에 있는 사람을 사랑하는 그 삶 자체가 하나님께 드리는 영광입니다.

그리고 언젠가 흔들리지 않는 그 나라에서 주님께서 우리를 안아 주실 것입니다. 우리는 그 소망으로 살아갑니다.

3. 우리의 수고는 주 안에서 헛되지 않다

마지막으로 고린도전서 15장 58절 말씀을 기억하고 싶습니다.

“그러므로 내 사랑하는 형제들아 견실하며 흔들리지 말고 항상 주의 일에 더욱 힘쓰는 자들이 되라 이는 너희 수고가 주 안에서 헛되지 않은 줄 앎이라.”

우리의 신앙생활에는 흔들릴 때도 있습니다. 부족할 때도 있고 게으를 때도 있습니다. 몸이 약해지고 하나님께 해 드릴 수 있는 것이 없다고 낙심할 때도 있습니다.

그러나 하나님의 영광은 우리가 만들어 내는 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 더할 수도 없고 뺄 수도 없습니다. 하나님은 이미 영광스러운 분이십니다.

우리가 할 일은 그 하나님을 인정하는 것입니다. 하나님을 내 삶에서 가장 무겁고 중요한 분으로 받아들이는 것입니다. 예수 그리스도를 내 인생의 주인으로 모시고, 먹고 마시는 작은 일상에서 감사하고, 하나님께서 내 곁에 맡겨 주신 사람들을 사랑하며 살아가는 것입니다.

오늘 이 자리에 나와 예배드리는 것, 평생 믿음을 지켜온 것, 자녀들을 기도로 키워 온 것, 교회를 사랑하며 살아온 것, 작은 자리에서 묵묵히 섬기는 것, 이 모든 수고는 주 안에서 헛되지 않습니다.

그러므로 견실하고 흔들리지 말고 항상 주의 일에 더욱 힘쓰는 성도님들이 되기를 바랍니다.

그리고 언젠가 주님께서 우리를 알아주시고 우리를 안아 주시는 그날까지, 매일의 삶 속에서 감사가 끊어지지 않고 우리의 삶 자체가 하나님께 아름다운 영광이 되기를 바랍니다.

Giving Glory to God(1Cor.6:19-20)

1. What Is the Glory of God?

How hard have you worked this past week? Living from Monday through Friday is not easy. We face many difficult things, and unexpected things happen as well. Still, I am thankful that God has given us the Lord’s Day so that we may rest, be restored, and then begin another week.

I think it has been about a year since I last preached. Preaching itself is difficult, but I came to realize that preparing a sermon is even harder than actually preaching it. I found myself thinking about it when I went to bed and continuing to think about it throughout the day. Through this, I felt that I came to understand our pastor’s heart, at least a little.

In Deacon Park Byeong-nam’s sermon last week, he spoke about the “talents.” As I listened to that message, I asked myself, “Am I faithfully serving with gratitude in the small things? Am I carrying out the small things entrusted to me without complaining?” What I found especially comforting was that the Lord did not tell us to be faithful only in great things, but to be faithful in small things. He knows our weakness, and He tells us to be faithful in the small things that we are able to do. I cannot tell you how thankful I am for that. It made me think, “Then perhaps I can do it too.”

A year ago, I shared a message from the book of Haggai about the First Temple and the Second Temple. The First Temple was Solomon’s Temple, prepared for by David and built by Solomon. The prophet Haggai referred to this as the “former glory.” The Second Temple was built under Zerubbabel after the people returned from exile in Babylon. Haggai referred to this as the “latter glory.”

When Zerubbabel’s Temple was completed, the younger people rejoiced because the temple had been rebuilt. But the older people who had seen Solomon’s former Temple wept aloud. Compared with the former Temple, this one seemed far too humble. Then why did the prophet Haggai say that the latter glory of this humble Temple of Zerubbabel would be greater than the former glory?

It was not because the Temple had been decorated magnificently. It was because the Lord, the true owner of the Temple, would come to that Temple. The glory of God did not depend on the size or splendor of the building.

What we want to think about together today is precisely this: the glory of God. We often use the expression “the glory of God,” but when someone asks us what it actually means, it can sometimes feel rather vague.

Today’s passage says:

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you and whom you have received from God? You are not your own. You were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.”

Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells within us. And we do not belong to ourselves. Jesus Christ purchased us sinners with the price of His blood. Therefore Scripture tells us, “Glorify God.”

Then what does it mean to glorify God?

2. Glorify God

(1) Regard the Glory of God as Weighty and Important

The Hebrew word for glory is *kabod*. The word originally carries the meaning of being “heavy” or “weighty,” and therefore “important.” To glorify God, then, means to receive God as the One who carries ultimate weight and importance. It means to regard God’s holiness and presence as important, to listen carefully to His Word, and to obey Him.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

It means receiving these words as weighty and important.

“Come, Lord Jesus.”

It means receiving these words as weighty and important as well.

This is true not only of human beings. Nature and all the creatures God has made also exist according to the order He has established. Forsythias and azaleas bloom in spring, summer flowers bloom in summer, and chrysanthemums bloom in autumn. Every creature moves according to the order and laws God has appointed. The whole universe, humanity, trees, nature, and history reveal the greatness and glory of God. Even when we do not feel it, the whole earth is filled with the glory of God.

Yet there is one misunderstanding we can easily have about the glory of God.

Sometimes we see an athlete win a gold medal or a soccer player score a goal and then say, “I give glory to God.” An actor may receive an award and say that he or she gives glory to God. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that.

But we can misunderstand what this means. We may begin to think as though, by accomplishing something extraordinary, we somehow add something to God’s glory.

What could we possibly add to the glory of God?

If only the person who receives an award gives glory to God, then do the countless people who did not receive an award somehow obscure God’s glory? Does the soccer player who scores a goal glorify God while those who do not score fail to glorify Him? Is getting into college God’s glory, while failing to get into college somehow diminishes His glory?

Of course not.

Regardless of us, God is already infinitely glorious. We can neither add to nor subtract from His glory. What we can do is acknowledge the glory that already belongs to Him.

I once heard something amusing while talking with some elderly people in my apartment complex. They said that if you want to live well as you get older, you have to be good at “Korean and arithmetic.” So I asked, “What does Korean mean?” They answered, “Know your subject.” Then I asked, “What does arithmetic mean?” They replied, “Know your limits.”

In other words, you have to know your subject and know your proper place.

Today, our subject is the glory of God. And knowing our proper place means knowing who we are. It means knowing that I am not someone who creates God’s glory, but someone who acknowledges the God who is already glorious.

The glory of God was present even during the COVID pandemic. It was present even in our difficult times. God’s glory does not change because our circumstances change. God remains unchangingly glorious.

(2) Receive Jesus Christ as the Lord of My Life

Then what is the glory of God?

Above all, the glory of God is the glory of God’s own being. We may say that the glory of God is God’s very nature and attributes—His beauty, greatness, and perfection—shining outward and making themselves known.

Hebrews tells us that Jesus Christ is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being. In Exodus, when Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, the glory of the LORD appeared like a consuming fire. God Himself is glory.

Then how should we live?

I have thought about the familiar expression, “living for the glory of God.” We should not understand it as though we are adding something to God. Perhaps we might better speak of living by the glory of God.

The first expression of such a life is allowing Jesus Christ to become the Lord of my life.

Today’s passage says that we have been “bought with a price.” Jesus purchased us with the price of His blood. If that is true, then the owner of my life is no longer me. Jesus Christ is the Lord of my life.

For those of us who believe, the cross must stand at the center of our lives. The cross is the power of Christ. To come to understand this is the grace of God.

When we come to understand that grace, we step down from the throne of our own lives. If I have been holding the steering wheel of my life until now, I hand it over to Jesus. I sit in the passenger seat and entrust my life to Jesus, allowing Him to direct it.

Then our lives begin to align with God’s plan, and what we call the abundant life begins to appear. It is toward this that we continually strive and grow in holiness.

(3) Give Thanks and Serve in the Small Things of Everyday Life

Then is a life lived by the glory of God always something grand?

No, it is not.

Scripture says, “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” The glory of God is not found only in great accomplishments. It is present even in the simplest things of daily life that we repeat every day—in eating and drinking.

Being able to open our eyes in the morning and breathe, being able to eat a warm meal, being able to drink a warm cup of tea—all of these are God’s grace.

“God, thank You that I can eat today.”

“Thank You that I can enjoy a warm cup of tea.”

This is how we live with gratitude to God. God’s glory is not found only in accomplishing something remarkable. God is pleased when we give thanks to Him and enjoy what He has given us.

The first question of the Westminster Shorter Catechism says that the chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. When God’s redeemed people treasure God Himself above everything else in this world, finding their joy and satisfaction in Him, the worth and beauty of God are most clearly displayed.

At present, I work about four hours each afternoon at a senior care facility in Wondang. For about two hours, I assist with programs and serve snacks to the elderly residents, and during the remaining time I drive them home.

There are several things about that work that have made me happy.

First of all, there is no traffic congestion on my way to and from work. When I worked at my previous job for many years, I had to commute into the city and experienced a great deal of stress because of the heavy traffic. But now it takes only about fifteen minutes by car from my home to Wondang. Even the drive to work gives me a sense of peace.

Another thing I enjoy is serving snacks to the elderly residents. Wearing my uniform, I take the snacks to each person one by one. Some of them even feel sorry that they are being served. But I truly enjoy doing it.

Some people look at me and ask, “Can you really make any money doing that kind of work?” But more important to me is the fact that I am able to serve each person one by one.

The same is true of driving. I have never been a fast driver. I tend to drive slowly. But when I am driving elderly people, that actually suits the work very well. I simply follow the designated route slowly and obey the traffic signals. I do not have to think about anything too complicated. These days, I even enjoy the driving.

There is glory to God even in these small things.

There is also a story about a boy who worked as a cleaner. He was always said to clean with a cheerful face. Someone asked him, “Why are you so happy even while you are cleaning?” The boy replied:

“I am happy because I am making the world God created clean.”

He connected even that small task with God.

And I believe that the very lives of our church members are themselves a glory to God.

Think about how we look at our children or grandchildren. We do not love them because they bring us enormous amounts of money or achieve extraordinary worldly success. We are happy simply because they are there beside us, smiling and calling us “Grandpa” or “Grandma.”

I believe that this is also something like the heart with which God our Father looks upon us.

Through all the years that have passed, you have endured countless hardships and storms by faith. And today, on a Sunday morning, you have come to church and are worshiping together with the people of God. This is a small church, but you have walked together and remained in your place. I believe that this in itself is a great glory to God.

There are twenty-four elderly people at the senior care facility where I work. The government provides substantial financial support for their care. Why is that? Because in their younger years they labored through the period of industrialization, played their part in the democratization of society, protected their families, and contributed greatly to building society. Now society takes responsibility for caring for them.

Our church members have one thing more.

All your lives, you have raised your children with tears and prayer. You have protected the Lord’s church. You have passed on a heritage of faith. The life you have lived in this way is itself a life that reveals the glory of God.

Sometimes as we grow older, we may think, “There is nothing I can do anymore.” Our bodies are not what they used to be, and we may not possess very much, so we may wonder, “How can I possibly glorify God?”

But that is not true.

Continuing to keep the faith today, coming to church, worshiping together, giving thanks for small things, and loving the people beside you—this life itself is glory offered to God.

And one day, in that kingdom that cannot be shaken, the Lord will embrace us. We live with that hope.

3. Our Labor in the Lord Is Not in Vain

Finally, I would like us to remember the words of 1 Corinthians 15:58:

“Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast and immovable, always giving yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

There are times when our life of faith is shaken. There are times when we fall short and times when we become lazy. There are also times when our bodies grow weak and we become discouraged because we feel that there is nothing we can do for God.

But the glory of God is not something we create. We can neither add to it nor subtract from it. God is already glorious.

What we are called to do is acknowledge that God. We are to receive Him as the One who carries the greatest weight and importance in our lives. We are to receive Jesus Christ as the Lord of our lives, give thanks in the small everyday things of eating and drinking, and love the people God has placed beside us.

Coming here today to worship, keeping the faith throughout your life, raising your children in prayer, loving the church, and quietly serving in the small place entrusted to you—all this labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Therefore, I pray that you will be steadfast and immovable, always giving yourselves fully to the work of the Lord.

And until that day when the Lord recognizes us and embraces us, may thanksgiving never cease in our daily lives, and may our very lives themselves become a beautiful glory offered to God.
