로마서49: 굳센 확신(롬8:31~36)

1.다섯 개의 질문

오늘 본문에는 물음표가 7개가 나옵니다. 개역개정에는 물음표가 나오지 않지만 대부분의 영어 성경과 최근 번역된 한글 성경에는 물음표가 나옵니다. 31절과 35절에 두 번씩 나오고, 32절, 33절, 34절에는 한 번씩 나옵니다. 물음표는 질문입니다. 보통 질문은 모를 때 하는데 여기에 나오는 질문은 몰라서 하는 질문이 아닙니다. 답을 알고 있지만 다시 확인시키기 위해서 하는 질문입니다.

치료가 길어져 지친 환자에게 의사가 묻습니다. “여기서 포기하면 되겠습니까?” 몰라서 묻는 질문이 아닙니다. 포기하지 말라는 것입니다. 여기 나온 질문들이 다 이런 질문들입니다. “하나님이 우리를 위하시면 누가 우리를 대적하겠습니까?”(롬8:31). 대적할 수 없다는 것입니다.

본문에 보면 중요한 질문 5개가 나옵니다. 31절의 처음 질문은 연결하기 위해서 사용한 질문이고, 35절에 나오는 2개의 질문은 내용으로 보면 하나의 질문이기 때문에 5개의 질문이 됩니다. 몇 주 동안 살펴보겠지만 이 다섯 개의 질문은 신앙인들이 어떤 상황에서도 마음에 품어야 할 복음들입니다.

① 하나님이 우리를 위하신다.

② 우리를 돌보신다.

③ 우리를 변호하신다.

④ 우리를 살리신다.

⑤ 우리를 붙드신다.

반드시 알고 있어라. 확신해라. 이 말을 하는 것입니다.

바울이 하는 처음 질문이 31절에 나옵니다. “그런즉 이 일에 대하여 우리가 무슨 말 하리요”(롬8:31). ‘그런즉’이 가리키는 게 뭡니까? 앞에서 바울이 말한 것들입니다. 하나님을 사랑하고, 하나님의 뜻대로 부름을 받은 사람은 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이룬다. 왜 선을 이룹니까? 하나님이 미리 아시고, 미리 정하시고, 부르시고, 의롭게 하시고, 영화롭게 하사 끝까지 붙드시기 때문입니다. 이 일에 대하여 우리가 할 말이 없습니다.

하나님은 우리를 위하십니다. 돌보십니다. 변호하십니다. 살리십니다. 붙드십니다. 탄식이 있고, 환난과 고난이 있어도 우리를 위한 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없습니다. 놓치지 말고 확신하면서 이 신앙의 길을 흔들리지 말고, 명예롭게 살아내라는 것입니다.

오늘 질문들은 신자가 놓치면 안 되는 ‘확신’에 대한 선포입니다. 확신이 뭡니까? 참이라고 믿는 것을 놓지 않겠다는 마음의 다짐과 결심입니다. 확신을 가지고 사는 삶과 확신 없이 사는 삶은 같을 수가 없습니다. 확신은 삶을 움직이게 합니다. 사람은 확신하는 만큼 움직입니다. 씨앗을 뿌리는 농부가 뿌리면 열매 맺을 것이라는 확신이 있기에 뿌리지, 없으면 뿌릴 수 없습니다. 잘못된 확신이든 바른 확신이든 확신은 삶을 움직이게 하는 힘입니다.

초대 교회 교인들을 생각해 보십시오. 약하고, 가진 것 없는 사람들입니다. 하지만 포기하지 않은 확신이 있었습니다. 무슨 확신입니까? 예수 그리스도가 죽음을 이기시고 부활하셨고, 하나님의 나라가 이 땅의 제국보다 더 가치 있다는 확신입니다. 이 확신 하나 가지고 살아갑니다. 병든 자를 돌보고, 버려진 아이들을 품고, 노예와 여성과 가난한 자를 존중하며 함께 살아갑니다. 현실을 도피하지 않고 사랑이 필요한 세상에 하나님의 사랑을 확신을 가지고 보여 줍니다. 확신은 어둠을 헤쳐 나가게 하는 빛입니다. 뿌리 깊은 나무처럼 이 바람, 저 바람에 흔들리지 않게 중심을 잡아줍니다.

확신은 필요하고, 중요합니다. 확신 없이 살면 안 됩니다. 물론 확신에는 오신(誤信)이 있고, 과신(過信)이 있고, 맹신(盲信)이 있기에 옳은 확신, 바른 확신(正信)을 가져야 합니다. “뭐니 뭐니 해도 돈이다. 성공이다. 힘이다. 내 판단은 언제나 옳다.” 확신이지만, 이런 확신은 빛이 아니고 눈을 멀게 합니다. 틀린 것을 굳게 믿으면 허망하게 끝날 수밖에 없습니다. 신앙은 맹신이 되면 안 됩니다. 무엇을 믿는지 물어야 합니다. 믿음이 정말 복음에 근거한 것인지, 잘못 알고 믿는 것은 아닌지, 내가 붙든 확신이 나를 살리는 확신인지 물어야 합니다.

2.굳센 확신

오늘 제목이 ‘굳센 확신’입니다. ‘굳세다’는 것은 내가 흔들리지 않는다는 말이 아니고, 내가 흔들려도 하나님은 흔들리지 않으시고, 흔들리는 나를 놓지 않으신다는 것을 믿는 것이 ‘굳센 확신’입니다. 내가 흔들려도 하나님은 나를 놓지 않으십니다.

굳센 확신이 있으면 삶을 대하는 태도가 달라집니다. 아침은 희망차고, 일하는 낮에는 열심과 인내가 있습니다. 저녁에는 감사가 있습니다. 확신이 필요한 이유는 분명합니다. 견고하게 하고, 무엇을 믿는지 확실하게 하고, 기쁨을 주기 때문입니다.

(1) 견고하게 한다.

첫 번째, 굳센 확신은 흔들리기 잘하고, 흔들림이 많은 삶을 붙들어 주는 견고한 힘이 있습니다. 뿌리 깊은 나무가 바람 불고 거친 비가 와도 쉽게 뽑히지 않는 것처럼, 굳센 확신은 함께하시고 붙들어 주시는 하나님께 뿌리를 내려 쉽게 무너지지 않습니다.

35절에서 바울이 묻습니다. “누가 우리를 그리스도의 사랑에서 끊으리요”(롬8:35). 끊을 수 없다는 것입니다. 환난도 역경도 박해도 굶주림도 헐벗음도 위험도 칼도, 무서운 드론이 떠도 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 있는 것은 없다는 것입니다. 확신입니다. 믿음입니다. 이 확신이 우리를 살리고, 견디게 하고, 다시 일어나 앞으로 나가게 합니다.

흔들림은 삶의 일상입니다. 인간의 조건입니다. 흔들리지 않고 사는 사람은 없습니다. 아파서 흔들리고, 힘든 일 때문에 흔들리고, 사랑하는 이들 때문에 마음이 편치 않습니다. 어떻게 해야 합니까? 무너져야 합니까? 이겨 낼 수는 없습니까? 이겨냈으면 좋겠습니다. 하나님이 위하시고, 돌보시고, 의롭다 하시고, 간구하시고, 끝까지 붙드신다는 굳센 확신이 이기게 합니다.

확신이 주는 두 개의 선물이 있습니다. 하나는 ‘견딤’이고, 다른 하나는 ‘나아감’입니다. 견딤은 욥처럼 견디는 것이고, 나아감은 아브라함처럼 나아가는 것입니다. 욥은 설명할 수 없는 고난 앞에서 흔들리고 탄식했지만 “내가 가는 길을 그가 아시나니”(욥23:10)라는 확신을 가지고 견뎌 냅니다. 아브라함은 어디로 가야 할지 몰랐지만 ‘가라’ 하신 하나님을 신뢰하고 일어나 한 걸음 한 걸음 나아갑니다. “우리가 사방으로 우겨쌈을 당하여도 싸이지 아니하며”(고후4:8). 확신이 주는 힘입니다. 확신은 폼이 아닙니다. 생명이고, 승리고, 담대함입니다.

(2) 확실하게 한다.

확신이 필요한 두 번째 이유는 확신은 우리가 무엇을 믿는지를 확실하게 보여주기 때문입니다. 확신에 흔들리는 이유는 확신의 근거를 자신의 감정과 상황에서 찾기 때문입니다. 확신을 자신의 감정 위에 세우면 모래 위에 세운 집처럼 되어서 쉽게 무너집니다. 천당과 지옥을 왔다 갔다 합니다.

우리는 믿음의 영웅이 아닙니다. 일어나는 일과 일어나는 감정에서 흔들릴 수밖에 없는 약함이 있습니다. 어떻게 매번 확신에 가득 찰 수 있겠습니까? 흔들릴 수 있습니다. 그럼에도 분명하게 알아야 할 것은 확신을 내가 할 수 있다는 자신감이나, 감정이나, 상황의 좋고 나쁨에서 오게 하면 안 된다는 것입니다. 확신은 하나님이 그리스도 안에서 하신 일, 이 복음에서 오게 해야 합니다.

오늘 본문에 나오는 다섯 가지 질문이 우리가 가져야 할 확신입니다. 첫 번째 질문입니다. 하나님이 우리 편인데 누가 우리를 대적하겠는가? 대적할 수 없다는 것입니다. 하나님이 우리를 위하신다는 것. 양보할 수 없는 확신입니다. 힘든 순간이 와도 이 확신은 놓치지 마시기 바랍니다.

두 번째 질문에서 다섯 번째 질문까지 전부 우리가 가져야 하는 확신들입니다. 자기 아들을 아끼지 않고 우리를 위해 내주신 하나님이 우리를 돌보시지 않겠느냐? 우리를 돌보신다. 확신해도 된다. 하나님이 우리를 의롭게 하셨는데 누가 감히 너를 고발할 수 있겠는가? 하나님이 변호하신다. 부활하신 주님이 지금 이 순간도 하늘 보좌 우편에서 우리를 위해 간구하신다. 누가 그리스도의 사랑에서 우리를 끊을 수 있는가? 아무것도 없다. 하나님이 우리를 끝까지 붙드신다.

이게 복음이고, 우리가 언제 어디서나 가져야 하는 확신입니다. 이 확신이 우리를 담대하게 하고, 신자의 삶을 힘차게 살게 합니다.

(3) 기쁨을 준다.

세 번째로 확신이 필요한 이유는 확신이 기쁨을 주기 때문입니다. 특별히 힘들 때 기쁨을 줘서 삶을 회복시킵니다. “주 안에서 항상 기뻐하라 내가 다시 말하노니 기뻐하라”(빌4:4). 바울이 감옥에 있을 때 쓴 편지입니다. 힘든 자리인데도 기뻐합니다.

왜 기뻐했다고 생각하십니까? 감옥이라는 현실보다 ‘주 안에 있다’는 복음의 이야기가 더 컸기 때문 아니겠습니까? 복음의 이야기가 뭡니까? 하나님이 위하시고, 하나님이 돌보시고, 하나님이 의롭다 변호하시고, 간구하시고, 끝까지 붙드신다는 이야기입니다. “나에게는 이런 예수가 있다. 나는 예수가 좋다.” 복음 안에서 굳센 믿음을 가진 사람이 하는 고백이고, 기쁨입니다.

“소망의 하나님이 모든 기쁨과 평강을 믿음 안에서 너희에게 충만하게 하사 성령의 능력으로 소망이 넘치게 하시기를 원하노라”(롬15:13). 힘든 가운데서도 지치지 않고 복음의 확신으로 승리했던 바울이 저와 여러분에게 주는 당부고, 선물이고, 도전입니다.

성도의 기쁨은 확신에서 나오는 터짐입니다. 신앙이 삶 전체를 걸어야 하는 것이라면 확신은 절대적으로 필요합니다. 흔들리고, 힘들고, 지치고, 눈물 날 때마다 자기 아들을 아끼지 아니하시고 역사 가운데 보내시사 구원하신 우리를 위하시는 하나님, 어떤 순간에서도 포기하지 않으시는 그리스도의 사랑이 더 크게 보이기를 바랍니다.

하나님이 위하십니다. 하나님이 돌보십니다. 끝까지 붙드십니다. 이 사랑 받으십시다. 힘을 주시고, 기쁨을 주시고, 감사를 주실 것입니다.

Romans 49: Firm Assurance (Rom 8:31–36)

1. Five Questions

In today’s scripture text, seven question marks appear. While question marks do not appear in the Revised Korean Version, they do appear in most English Bibles and recently translated Korean Bibles. They appear twice each in verses 31 and 35, and once each in verses 32, 33, and 34. A question mark signifies a question. Usually, questions are asked when someone does not know something, but the questions appearing here are not asked out of ignorance. They are questions asked to reaffirm what is already known.

A doctor asks a patient who is exhausted from prolonged treatment: “Should we give up here?” This is not a question asked out of ignorance. It means do not give up. The questions presented here are all of this nature. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom 8:31). It means no one can oppose us.

Looking at the text, five important questions appear. The first question in verse 31 is used as a transition to connect ideas, and since the two questions in verse 35 constitute a single question in terms of content, it totals five questions. We will examine them over the next few weeks, but these five questions are the gospels that believers must keep in their hearts under any circumstance.

① God is for us.

② He cares for us.

③ He defends us.

④ He saves us.

⑤ He holds onto us.

Be sure to know this. Have assurance. This is what it is saying.

The first question Paul asks appears in verse 31. “What then shall we say to these things?” (Rom 8:31). What does “these things” refer to? It refers to what Paul said previously. For those who love God and are called according to His purpose, all things work together for good. Why do they work together for good? Because God foreknew, predestined, called, justified, and glorified them, holding onto them until the end. Regarding this matter, we have nothing to say.

God is for us. He cares for us. He defends us. He saves us. He holds onto us. Even if there is groaning, affliction, and suffering, nothing can separate us from the love of God which is for us. Do not miss this, but with assurance, live out this path of faith without wavering and with honor.

Today’s questions are a proclamation of ‘assurance’ that believers must not lose. What is assurance? It is the inner commitment and determination not to let go of what one believes to be true. A life lived with assurance and a life lived without assurance cannot be the same. Assurance moves life. People move as much as they are assured. A farmer sowing seeds sows because he has the assurance that they will bear fruit; if he doesn’t have it, he cannot sow. Whether it is a mistaken assurance or a right assurance, assurance is the power that moves life.

Think of the early church believers. They were weak people with nothing. However, they possessed an unwavering assurance. What assurance was it? It was the assurance that Jesus Christ overcame death and resurrected, and that the Kingdom of God is more valuable than the empires of this world. They lived with this single assurance. They cared for the sick, embraced abandoned children, and lived together while respecting slaves, women, and the poor. Instead of escaping reality, they demonstrated God’s love with assurance to a world in need of love. Assurance is the light that pierces through the darkness. Like a deeply rooted tree, it holds the center so as not to be shaken by this wind or that wind.

Assurance is necessary and important. We must not live without assurance. Of course, within assurance, there is false belief (誤信), overconfidence (過信), and blind faith (盲信), so we must possess the right assurance, the true faith (正信). “No matter what anyone says, it is money. It is success. It is power. My judgment is always right.” This is also an assurance, but this kind of assurance is not light; it blinds the eyes. Believing firmly in what is wrong can only end in futility. Faith must not become blind faith. We must ask what we believe. We must ask whether our faith is truly grounded in the gospel, whether we believe based on a misunderstanding, and whether the assurance we hold is an assurance that saves us.

2. Firm Assurance

Today’s title is ‘Firm Assurance.’ Being ‘firm’ does not mean that I do not shake, but rather believing that even if I shake, God does not shake, and He does not let go of me who is shaking—that is ‘firm assurance.’ Even if I shake, God does not let go of me.

When there is firm assurance, the attitude toward life changes. The morning is hopeful, the daytime of work is filled with diligence and patience, and the evening is filled with gratitude. The reason assurance is needed is clear. It makes us steadfast, it clarifies what we believe, and it gives us joy.

(1) It makes us steadfast.

First, firm assurance has a steadfast power that holds up a life that is prone to shaking and full of instability. Just as a deeply rooted tree is not easily uprooted even when the wind blows and harsh rain falls, firm assurance takes root in God who is with us and holds us, so it does not easily collapse.

In verse 35, Paul asks, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Rom 8:35). It means nothing can separate us. Neither tribulation, nor distress, nor persecution, nor famine, nor nakedness, nor danger, nor sword—even if terrifying drones fly—nothing can separate us from the love of God. This is assurance. This is faith. This assurance saves us, allows us to endure, and makes us rise again to move forward.

Shaking is a daily routine of life. It is the human condition. No one lives without shaking. We shake because we are sick, we shake because of difficult trials, and our hearts are uneasy because of those we love. What should we do? Must we collapse? Can we not overcome it? I hope we overcome it. The firm assurance that God is for us, cares for us, justifies us, intercedes for us, and holds onto us until the end enables us to overcome.

There are two gifts that assurance provides. One is ‘endurance,’ and the other is ‘moving forward.’ Endurance is enduring like Job, and moving forward is moving forward like Abraham. Job shook and groaned before inexplicable suffering, but he endured with the assurance that “He knows the way that I take” (Job 23:10). Abraham did not know where he was supposed to go, but trusting God who said ‘Go,’ he arose and moved forward step by step. “We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed” (2 Cor 4:8). This is the power given by assurance. Assurance is not for show. It is life, victory, and boldness.

(2) It makes us certain.

The second reason assurance is needed is that it clearly shows what we believe. The reason we waver in our assurance is that we look for its basis in our own emotions and circumstances. If we build our assurance upon our emotions, it becomes like a house built on sand and easily collapses. We go back and forth between heaven and hell.

We are not heroes of faith. We have weaknesses that inevitably cause us to shake due to happening events and arising emotions. How can we be full of assurance every single time? We can shake. Nevertheless, what we must clearly know is that we must not let assurance come from self-confidence in what we can do, from our emotions, or from whether circumstances are good or bad. Assurance must come from what God has done in Christ—from this gospel.

The five questions in today’s text are the assurances we must possess. Here is the first question. Since God is on our side, who can be against us? It means no one can oppose us. That God is for us—this is a non-negotiable assurance. Even when difficult moments come, I hope you do not lose this assurance.

From the second question to the fifth question, all are assurances we must hold. Will not God, who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us, care for us? He cares for us. We can be assured of it. Since God has justified us, who dares to accuse you? God defends us. The resurrected Lord is interceding for us at this very moment at the right hand of the heavenly throne. Who can separate us from the love of Christ? There is nothing. God holds onto us until the end.

This is the gospel, and this is the assurance we must have anytime, anywhere. This assurance makes us bold and enables us to live the life of a believer with strength.

(3) It gives us joy.

The third reason assurance is needed is that it gives us joy. Especially during difficult times, it provides joy to restore our lives. “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice” (Phil 4:4). This is a letter Paul wrote while he was in prison. Even though it was a painful place, he rejoiced.

Why do you think he rejoiced? Was it not because the story of the gospel—that he was ‘in the Lord’—was greater than the reality of the prison? What is the story of the gospel? It is the story that God is for us, God cares for us, God defends and justifies us, intercedes for us, and holds onto us until the end. “I have this Jesus. I love Jesus.” This is the confession and joy of a person who has firm faith within the gospel.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Rom 15:13). This is the exhortation, gift, and challenge that Paul, who triumphed with the assurance of the gospel without growing weary amidst hardships, gives to you and me.

The joy of a saint is an outburst coming from assurance. If faith is something on which we must stake our entire lives, assurance is absolutely necessary. Whenever you shake, struggle, grow weary, and shed tears, I pray that the God who is for us—who did not spare His own Son but sent Him into history to save us—and the love of Christ that never gives up under any circumstance, will appear greater to your eyes.

God is for us. God cares for us. He holds onto us until the end. Let us receive this love. He will give us strength, give us joy, and give us gratitude.
