로마서 37. 사랑의 건너옴 (롬 6:1~4). 성탄절

1. 사랑의 건너오심

기쁨과 평화가 넘치는 성탄 아침입니다. 옆의 분들과 인사 나누겠습니다. “메리 크리스마스.”

성탄에 대해 어떤 추억을 가지고 계십니까? 연애 시절 성탄절을 어떻게 보내셨나요? 귀찮다고 집에만 있지는 않으셨을 겁니다. 눈이라도 오면 세상을 다 가진 것처럼 즐겁지 않으셨습니까? 사랑은 만나는 것이고, 찾아가는 것입니다. 사랑하는데 보지 못하면 얼마나 애가 타겠습니까?

성탄은 하나님께서 우리를 너무나 만나고 싶으셔서, 사랑을 품고 당신이 계신 곳에서 이 먼 지구별로 ‘건너오신’ 기적과 같은 날입니다. 오늘 말씀의 제목이 ‘사랑의 건너옴’인 이유입니다. 이 사랑의 방문이 우리에게 어떤 사건을 일으켰는지 로마서 본문을 통해 살펴보겠습니다.

2. 사랑의 건너옴, 그 이후

하나님의 건너오심은 우리에게 세 가지 결정적인 일을 일으킵니다. 바로 생명의 연합, 신분의 변화, 새 생명의 삶입니다. 이는 세상의 악함과 인간의 연약함 속에서도 하나님을 신뢰하며 주님이 내민 손을 ‘아멘’으로 잡는 이들에게 일어나는 영적 사건입니다.

(1) 생명의 연합 (3절)

가장 먼저 일어나는 일은 주님과 내가 하나 되는 ‘생명의 연합’입니다. 3절을 보십시오. “무릇 그리스도 예수와 합하여…”

물과 기름이 섞일 수 없듯, 거룩한 하나님과 죄인인 인간은 합할 수 없습니다. 그러나 주님은 육신을 입고 건너오셔서 생명과 생명으로 우리와 연합하셨고, 영혼의 살길을 열어주셨습니다. 이 연합은 우리 삶을 바꿉니다.

① 고독이 사라집니다.주님께서 “내가 너희를 고아와 같이 버려두지 않겠다”(요 14:18)라고 약속하셨습니다. 인간에게는 가족과 친구가 있어도 채워지지 않는, 죽음 앞에 홀로 서야 하는 절대 고독이 있습니다. 그러나 성령으로 우리와 연합하신 주님은 세상이 줄 수 없는 평안으로 그 빈자리를 채우십니다.

정현종 시인은 “사람이 온다는 건 실로 어마어마한 일이다. 한 사람의 일생이 오기 때문이다”라고 했습니다. 하물며 생명의 주인이 건너와 우리와 합하셨으니, 이 연합의 신비를 누리시길 바랍니다.

② 능력이 생깁니다.
포도나무 비유(요 15:5)처럼, 가지인 우리가 주님 안에 거할 때 기쁨과 사랑이라는 인생의 가장 중요한 열매를 맺습니다. 나는 약하지만 강하신 주님의 사랑과 평안이 내 안에 흘러들어와 나를 변화시킵니다. 예수님의 평안이 불안을 덮고, 승리가 패배를 덮는 것, 이것이 성탄이 만든 연합의 능력입니다.

(2) 신분의 변화 (2절)

두 번째 일어난 일은 ‘신분의 변화’입니다.

2절은 “죄에 대하여 죽은 우리가 어찌 그 가운데 더 살리요”라고 선포합니다.

여전히 연약하여 죄를 짓기도 하지만, 우리의 신분은 이미 ‘하나님의 자녀’로 변했습니다. 이 거룩한 변화는 우리의 자존감을 높여줍니다. 세속적 자존감이 스스로를 높이는 것이라면, 신자의 자존감은 창조자의 사랑받는 자녀라는 믿음에서 오는 깊은 평안입니다.

이사야 43장 4절, “네가 내 눈에 보배롭고 존귀하며 내가 너를 사랑한다”라는 말씀과 스바냐 3장 17절의 “너로 말미암아 기쁨을 이기지 못하시며”라는 고백은 힘겨운 삶을 사는 이들에게 주시는 위로입니다. 새벽 배송을 하며 치열하게 사는 분들, 스펙이 없어 낙담하는 청년들에게 주님은 “너는 내 존귀한 자녀”라고 말씀하십니다. 성탄은 우리에게 이토록 큰 신분의 선물을 주었습니다.

(3) 새 생명의 삶 (4절b)

마지막 세 번째는 ‘새로운 생명’을 가지고 살게 하신 것입니다. 4절 하반절을 보면, “우리도 또한 새 생명 안에서 살아가기 위함이라”고 하십니다.

이는 주님이 부활의 능력을 가지신 것처럼, 우리도 질적으로 완전히 다른 ‘새로운 생명’의 삶을 살게 된다는 뜻입니다. 영이 살아 있기에 세상 풍조에 휩쓸리지 않고 거슬러 올라가 거룩을 추구합니다. 한마디로 ‘품격 있는 삶’입니다.

아브라함이 조카 롯에게 “네가 좌하면 나는 우하겠다”(창 13:9)라며 좋은 땅을 양보할 수 있었던 것은 그에게 영적 품격이 있었기 때문입니다. 하박국 선지자 역시 무화과나무 잎이 마르고 외양간에 소가 없어도 “여호와로 말미암아 즐거워하리라”(합 3:17~19)고 고백했습니다. 이것이 새 생명을 가진 자의 고도(高度)의 품격이자 넉넉함입니다.

3. 맺는말

성탄 아침, 생명의 주님이 건너오셔서 우리에게 생명을 주시고 하나님의 자녀가 되게 하셨습니다. 그리고 세상에 지지 않고 품격 있게 살 수 있는 기회를 주셨습니다.이 놀라운 선물을 잘 받아 누리십시다. 삶의 무게에 지지 말고, 자녀다운 권세와 품격으로 살아가시길 축복합니다.

Romans 37. The Crossing of Love (Rom 6:1–4). Christmas

1. The Crossing of Love

It is a Christmas morning overflowing with joy and peace. Let us greet those beside us. “Merry Christmas.”

What memories do you hold regarding Christmas? How did you spend Christmas during your dating years? You likely did not just stay at home because it was bothersome. If it snowed, didn’t you feel as joyful as if you owned the whole world? Love is about meeting, and it is about seeking someone out. If you love someone but cannot see them, how anxious would you feel?

Christmas is a miraculous day when God, desiring to meet us so deeply, embraced His love and ‘crossed over’ from where He was to this distant planet. This is why the title of today’s message is ‘The Crossing of Love.’ Let us examine through the text of Romans what kind of events this visit of love has caused for us.

2. The Crossing of Love, And After

God’s crossing over brings about three decisive events for us. They are the union of life, a change of status, and a life of new life. This is a spiritual event that occurs for those who, even amidst the wickedness of the world and human weakness, trust in God and grasp the hand the Lord holds out with an ‘Amen.’

(1) Union of Life (v.3)

The very first thing that happens is the ‘union of life’ where the Lord and I become one. Look at verse 3. “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus…”

Just as water and oil cannot mix, the holy God and sinful humans cannot unite. However, the Lord put on flesh, crossed over, and united with us, life to life, opening a way for our souls to live. This union changes our lives.

① Loneliness disappears.

The Lord promised, “I will not leave you as orphans” (John 14:18). Even with family and friends, humans possess an absolute solitude where they must stand alone before death. However, the Lord, who has united with us through the Holy Spirit, fills that empty space with a peace the world cannot give.

Poet Jung Hyun-jong said, “The coming of a person is truly a tremendous thing. Because a person’s entire lifetime comes with them.” How much more so when the Lord of Life has crossed over and united with us; I hope you enjoy the mystery of this union.

② Power is generated. As in the vine metaphor (John 15:5), when we, the branches, abide in the Lord, we bear the most important fruits of life: joy and love. I am weak, but the Lord’s strong love and peace flow into me and transform me. Jesus’ peace covering anxiety, and His victory covering defeat—this is the power of the union created by Christmas.

(2) Change of Status (v.2)

The second thing that happened is a ‘change of status.’

Verse 2 proclaims, “We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”

Although we are still weak and commit sins, our status has already changed to ‘children of God.’ This holy transformation elevates our self-esteem. If secular self-esteem is about elevating oneself, a believer’s self-esteem is a deep peace that comes from the faith that one is a beloved child of the Creator.

Isaiah 43:4, “You are precious and honored in my sight, and I love you,” and Zephaniah 3:17, “He will rejoice over you with singing,” are words of comfort given to those living difficult lives. To those fighting fiercely while doing early morning deliveries, to young people discouraged by a lack of credentials, the Lord says, “You are my precious child.” Christmas has given us such a great gift of status.

(3) A Life of New Life (v.4b)

The last, third point is that He has enabled us to live with ‘new life.’ Looking at the latter part of verse 4, it says, “…we too may live a new life.”

This means that just as the Lord possesses the power of resurrection, we too come to live a life of ‘new life’ that is qualitatively completely different. Because our spirit is alive, we do not get swept away by the trends of the world but swim against them, pursuing holiness. In a word, it is a ‘dignified life.’

The reason Abraham could yield the good land to his nephew Lot, saying, “If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right” (Gen 13:9), was because he possessed spiritual dignity. The prophet Habakkuk also confessed that even if the fig tree does not bud and there are no cattle in the stalls, “yet I will rejoice in the Lord” (Hab 3:17~19). This is the high-level dignity and generosity of one who possesses new life.

3. Conclusion

On this Christmas morning, the Lord of Life crossed over to give us life and make us children of God. And He gave us the opportunity to not be defeated by the world but to live with dignity. Let us receive and enjoy this amazing gift well. I bless you to not be defeated by the weight of life, but to live with the authority and dignity befitting a child of God.
