우월 의식을 조심하라 (롬 2:12-16)

토끼와 거북이 경주에서 토끼가 진 이유는 무엇일까요? ‘한숨 자고 가도 이길 수 있다’는 우월감에서 나온 자만 때문입니다. 오늘 나눌 말씀의 주제는 바로 이 ‘우월 의식’입니다.

바울이 염려했던 당시 유대인들의 문제가 바로 이 우월 의식이었습니다. 그들은 자신들이 하나님이 선택한 거룩한 백성이기에 이방인들과 다르며, 율법을 가졌으니 심판받지 않을 것이라 생각했습니다.

그러나 바울은 직격탄을 날립니다. 로마서 2장 13절입니다. “하나님 앞에서는 율법을 듣는 자가 의인이 아니요 오직 율법을 행하는 자라야 의롭다 하심을 얻으리니.” 율법을 안다고 끝이 아니라는, 행함이 중요하다는 경고입니다.

더 나아가 14-15절에서는 율법 없는 이방인이라도 양심에 따라 올바른 행동을 하면, 율법을 가졌으면서도 행하지 않는 유대인보다 낫다고 말합니다. 이 말씀은 우월 의식에 젖어 있는 유대인들뿐만 아니라, 우월 의식으로 가득 찬 세상에 주시는 경고입니다.

1. 우월 의식이란 무엇이며, 어디서 오는가?
우월 의식은 간단히 말해 ‘내가 너보다 낫다’는 생각입니다. 때때로 도움이 될 때도 있지만, 대부분의 경우 해롭습니다. 신앙적인 관점에서 볼 때, 우월 의식은 타락한 인간 본성에서 나오는 죄성입니다. 아담과 하와가 ‘하나님처럼 될 것’이라는 유혹에 무너졌듯이, 우리 안에도 우월하고 탁월한 존재가 되고 싶다는 죄성이 남아있습니다.

우리는 쉽게 자신을 비교하고, 그 과정에서 우월감이나 열등감에 빠집니다. 우월감과 열등감의 가장 큰 문제는 하나님의 은혜를 보지 못하게 한다는 것입니다. 바울은 고린도전서 4장 7절에서 묻습니다. “네게 있는 것 중에 받지 아니한 것이 무엇이냐 네가 받았은즉 어찌하여 받지 아니한 것같이 자랑하느냐?” 우리가 가진 모든 것은 하나님께 받은 은혜입니다. 우리가 자신의 노력으로만 이루었다 생각하면 우월 의식이 생겨 감사와 겸손이 사라집니다.

2. 우월 의식의 위험(폐해)
우월 의식은 아름답지 못한 결과를 만듭니다. 가장 위험한 폐해는 바로 ‘무시함’ 입니다. 타인을 무시하는 것은 하는 사람과 받는 사람 모두에게 해롭습니다. 상처를 주고 관계를 깨뜨립니다. 신자들은 특히 우월 의식을 버려야 합니다. 우리가 어떻게 구원받았습니까? 잘난 것이 있어서가 아니라 오직 은혜로 구원받았습니다. 이 사실을 안다면 사소한 일에도 으스대서는 안 됩니다.

우월 의식에 사로잡히면 회개가 죽습니다. 자신의 부족함을 보지 못하니 성숙할 수 없고, 결국 갈등만 야기합니다. 기쁨은 사라지고, 주님이 원하시는 ‘큰 자가 작은 자를 섬기고 자신을 낮춤으로 높아지는’ 모습(마 23:11-12)은 찾아볼 수 없습니다. 우월 의식은 우리를 고립시키고, 하나님과의 관계마저 멀어지게 합니다. 우리가 익을수록 고개 숙이는 벼처럼 쓸데없는 우월 의식에서 벗어나야 합니다.

3. 우월 의식에서 벗어나기
어떻게 우월 의식에서 벗어날 수 있을까요? 두 가지만 기억하면 됩니다. 바로 은혜와 섬김입니다.

첫째, 은혜를 기억해야 합니다. 우리는 모두 하나님께 받은 자라는 사실을 잊지 말아야 합니다. 받은 것을 인정하고 은혜를 은혜로 아는 사람은 자신을 높이지 않고 주신 분을 높이게 됩니다. 우월감도 열등감도 모두 은혜를 알아보는 눈에서 벗어날 수 있습니다.

둘째, 섬김으로 내려가야 합니다. 강물이 낮은 곳으로 흘러 수많은 생명을 살리듯이, 마음도 낮은 곳으로 흐를 때 평안하고 잔잔해집니다. 사울 왕은 우월 의식에 사로잡혀 무너졌지만, 다윗은 자신을 죽이려는 사울을 죽일 수 있었음에도 칼을 거두며 자신을 낮췄습니다. “나는 여호와의 기름부음 받은 자에게 손을 대지 아니하리라”(삼상 26:11). 자신의 정의와 권리보다 하나님의 뜻 앞에 자신을 낮춘 것입니다.

인간적으로 강하고 우월하면 오히려 하나님의 일하심을 받아들이지 못하게 됩니다. 하나님의 손은 언제나 자신을 낮춘 자의 어깨 위에 머뭅니다. 하나님을 드러내고 싶다면 낮아져야 합니다.

오늘 본문 16절은 “곧 나의 복음에 이른 바와 같이 하나님이 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 사람들의 은밀한 것을 심판하시는 그 날에라”로 끝납니다. 하나님의 심판은 겉으로 드러난 것뿐 아니라, 우리 마음 깊은 곳의 은밀한 우월 의식까지도 보신다는 것입니다.

다시 13절을 봅니다. “하나님 앞에서는 율법을 듣는 자가 의인이 아니요 오직 율법을 행하는 자라야 의롭다 하심을 얻으리니.” 아는 신앙이 아니라 실천하는 신앙이 필요합니다. 우월 의식을 벗어나려면 생각보다 행동을 먼저 바꿔야 합니다.

우월 의식을 조심합시다. 아무리 좋은 능력과 자랑할 만한 것이 있어도 모든 것이 은혜라는 것을 알고, 섬김의 마음으로 살 때 주시는 은혜는 우월감이 주는 잠깐의 만족보다 크고 넉넉하고 넓을 것입니다. 우리 안에 숨어 있는 우월 의식을 섬김과 사랑으로 사용합시다. 심판 때에 큰 영광으로 갚아주실 것입니다.

Beware of Superiority Complex (Romans 2:12-16)

Why did the rabbit lose to the tortoise in the race? It was due to arrogance stemming from a superiority complex — thinking, “I can win even if I take a nap.” Today’s sermon topic is precisely this ‘superiority complex.’

Paul was deeply concerned about the superiority complex prevalent among the Jews of his time. They believed they were different from Gentiles, chosen by God, and would be exempt from judgment because they possessed the Law.

However, Paul delivered a direct hit. Romans 2:13 states, “For not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified.” It was a warning that merely knowing the Law wasn’t enough; action was crucial.

Furthermore, in verses 14-15, Paul asserts that even Gentiles, who don’t have the Law, can act righteously by their conscience. In such cases, they are superior to Jews who possess the Law but fail to obey it. This message is not only for the Jews steeped in their superiority complex but also for the entire world engrossed in it.

1. What is a Superiority Complex, and Where Does it Come From?
A superiority complex is, simply put, the thought, “I am better than you.” While it can occasionally be helpful, it’s mostly harmful. From a theological perspective, a superiority complex is a sinful trait stemming from fallen human nature. Just as Adam and Eve fell for the temptation of “becoming like God,” the desire to be superior and excellent remains within us.

We easily compare ourselves to others, falling into feelings of superiority or inferiority. The biggest problem with these feelings is that they prevent us from seeing God’s grace. Paul asks in 1 Corinthians 4:7, “What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?” Everything we possess is grace from God. If we attribute our achievements solely to our own efforts, a superiority complex arises, making us lose gratitude and humility.

2. The Dangers (Harm) of a Superiority Complex
A superiority complex leads to unpleasant outcomes. Its most dangerous harm is ‘disdain’. Disdaining others harms both the one who disdains and the one who is disdained. It wounds and breaks relationships. Believers, in particular, must abandon a superiority complex. How were we saved? Not because of our merits, but solely by grace. If we understand this, we shouldn’t boast about trivial things.

If you are trapped in a superiority complex, repentance dies. You won’t see your own shortcomings, hindering maturity. This inevitably leads to conflict with others. Joy disappears, and the attitude Christ desires — “the greatest among you will be your servant” (Matthew 23:11-12) — is nowhere to be found. A superiority complex isolates us and distances us from God. We must be like the rice stalks that bow their heads lower as they ripen, shedding our useless superiority complex.

3. Overcoming a Superiority Complex
How can we overcome a superiority complex? Remember two things: grace and service.

First, we must remember grace. We should never forget that we are recipients of God’s blessings. Recognizing what we’ve received and understanding grace as grace means exalting the Giver, not ourselves. The path to overcoming both superiority and inferiority complexes lies in having eyes that recognize grace.

Second, we must descend into service. Just as rivers flow to lower ground, bringing life to countless things, our hearts find peace and calm when they flow to lower places. Consider King Saul, who was consumed by a superiority complex and fell. In contrast, David, though having the perfect opportunity to kill Saul who sought his life, held back his hand, humbling himself. “I will not lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed” (1 Samuel 26:11). He humbled himself before God’s will rather than his own justice or rights.

If we are strong and superior in a human sense, we may fail to accept God’s work, which ultimately harms us. God’s hand always rests upon the shoulders of those who humble themselves. If you wish to reveal God and allow Him to work, you must humble yourself.

Romans 2:16 concludes: “This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.” God’s judgment looks not only at what is apparent but also at the deepest secrets of our hearts, including our hidden superiority complex.

Let’s look at verse 13 again: “For not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified.” We need a faith that acts, not just knows. To shed a superiority complex, we need to change our actions before our thoughts.

Let us beware of a superiority complex. No matter how many abilities or commendable things we possess, understanding that everything is grace and living with a heart of service will bring a grace that is greater, more abundant, and wider than the fleeting satisfaction of a superiority complex. If you have a hidden superiority complex, do not bury it; use it for service and love. God will repay you with great glory on the day of judgment.
