그리움 (시 42:1~11)

1. 설날, 그리움의 날

시 한 편 보고 시작하겠습니다. 나태주 시인의 ‘그리움’입니다.

지구 위를 걷고 있는 모든 사람은, 누군가 한 사람씩을 간절히 그리워하며 살고 있습니다. 그리움이 있어 우리는 추운 겨울을 견디고, 먼 길을 마다치 않고 달려갑니다. 그리움은 우리 마음속에 하나씩 들어 있는 작고 따뜻한 난로 같은 것입니다. 오늘도 내 마음의 난로에 불을 지핍니다. 당신이라는 이름의 따스한 불씨 하나, 내 영혼의 빈터를 채웁니다.

예, 우리도 누군가를 그리워하면서 영혼의 빈터를 채우면 좋겠습니다. 설날이 시작됐습니다. 설날은 ‘그리움’의 날 아닙니까? 오래된 사진첩을 넘기듯이 한 장 한 장 넘기면서 좋았던 날들, 힘들었던 날들을 되새기며 오늘을 살아내는 힘을 얻는 날로 보내야 할 것입니다.

2. 세 가지 그리움

오늘 본문의 시인에게서 우리는 ‘그리움’에 대한 세 가지 모습을 발견합니다. 시인의 상황과 우리의 형편은 다르지만, 그리워하는 그 마음의 본질은 다르지 않습니다.

(1) 꺼내지는 그리움

시인은 지금 낙심과 불안 속에 있습니다(5절). 고향에서 멀리 떨어진 타지, 요단 땅과 헤르몬과 미살 산에 홀로 서 있습니다(6절). 도와줄 사람 하나 없이 눈물만 흐릅니다(3절). 이때 그리움이 ‘꺼내지고’ 있습니다.

내가 억지로 꺼내는 그리움도 있지만, 진짜 그리움은 저절로 ‘꺼내지는 그리움’입니다. 힘들고 아플 때 예기치 않게 찾아와 숨어있던 기억을 건드리는 것입니다. 어머니가 그립고, 아버지가 그립고, 고향 집과 다시 돌아갈 수 없는 시절이 그리워집니다.

아련하고 가슴 미어지는 그리움인데도 이 그리움이 우리를 만집니다. 아픈데 그립고, 눈물이 나는데 위로가 됩니다. ‘아, 내가 혼자가 아니었구나’ 하는 깨달음과 함께 희생했던 기억의 보따리들이 풀어질 때, 그 기억들이 지금의 나를 치유하고 보듬는 손길이 됩니다. 이번 명절에 이런 ‘꺼내지는 그리움’이 많기를 바랍니다. 그리움은 우리를 견디게 하는 따뜻한 힘이며 추억입니다.

(2) 깊어지는 그리움

두 번째로 그리움은 더 ‘깊어져야’ 합니다. 그리움은 단순히 추억하는 것으로 끝나서는 안 됩니다. 꺼내진 그리움을 통해 삶이 더 나아져야 합니다. 어머니를 그리워한다면 어머니의 사랑이 지금 나의 사랑이 되어야 하고, 아픈 기억이 있다면 그것을 반면교사로 삼아야 합니다.

여기서 한 걸음 더 나아가, 삶의 그리움은 하나님을 향한 그리움으로 깊어져야 합니다. 시인이 찾은 것은 결국 하나님입니다.

“하나님이여 사슴이 시냇물을 찾기에 갈급함 같이 내 영혼이 주를 찾기에 갈급하나이다” (1절)

시인은 허무하다 말하지 않고 ‘갈급하다’ 말하면서 자신의 존재를 걸고 주님을 찾습니다. 7절의 고백처럼 ‘깊음은 깊음을 부릅니다’. 인생의 한계라는 깊음 속에서 하나님이라는 또 다른 깊음을 부르며 갈망하는 것입니다.

마이스터 에크하르트는 “하나님은 영혼의 가장 깊은 곳에서 일하신다”고 했습니다. 그리움이 하나님께 닿을 때 우리는 허무를 이길 수 있습니다. 그리워하다 힘들어지면 시인처럼 생명의 하나님께 나아가 깊게 기도하십시다. 8절 말씀처럼 낮에는 사랑을 베푸시고 밤에는 찬송으로 채우시는 하나님께 기도할 때, 그리움의 끝에서 기다리는 것은 허무가 아니라 감사와 위로입니다.

(3) 승화되는 그리움

그리움이 깊어질 때 비로소 ‘승화’가 일어납니다. 더 높은 상태로 발전하는 것입니다. 과거에 머물던 그리움의 시선이 미래와 영원으로 승화되어 현재를 살아갈 힘을 얻게 합니다.

5절에서 시인은 선포합니다.

“내 영혼아 네가 어찌하여 낙심하며 어찌하여 내 속에서 불안해하는가 너는 하나님께 소망을 두라 그가 나타나 도우심으로 말미암아 내가 여전히 찬송하리로다”

눈물 흘리던 자리에서 일어나 자신에게 “하나님께 소망을 두라”고 명령합니다. 이것이 승화입니다. 시선을 하나님께 돌리는 순간 그리움은 후회가 아니라 찬송으로 변합니다. 성도에게 그리움은 과거로 돌아가는 퇴로가 아니라, 하늘 본향으로 나아가는 통로입니다.

히브리서 11장의 믿음의 선진들이 본향을 그리워하며 주저앉지 않았던 것처럼, 우리의 그리움도 향기처럼 하나님께 올려드려야 합니다. 그럴 때 그리움은 소망과 믿음과 사랑이 되어 오늘을 살아내게 하는 하나님의 힘이 됩니다.

이번 설날, 그리움을 품고 우리 마음이 더 따뜻해지십시다. 그리움 속에서 더 깊어지십시다. 하나님께 소망을 두십시다. 그리움을 찬송으로 승화시키며 넉넉히 이기는 명절이 되시기를 축복합니다.

Longing (Psalm 42:1-11)

1. Lunar New Year, A Day of Longing

I would like to begin with a poem titled ‘Longing’ by poet Na Tae-joo:

Every person walking on this earth lives while yearning earnestly for at least one person. Because of longing, we endure the cold winter and do not hesitate to travel long distances. Longing is like a small, warm stove tucked away in each of our hearts. Today, I light the fire in the stove of my heart. A single warm ember named ‘You’ fills the empty field of my soul.

Indeed, I hope we all fill the empty spaces of our souls by longing for someone. Lunar New Year has begun. Is it not a day of ‘longing’? Like flipping through an old photo album, we should spend this day recounting the good times and the hard times, gaining the strength to live through today.

2. Three Types of Longing

In the psalmist of today’s scripture, we find three aspects of ‘longing.’ Although the psalmist’s situation differs from ours, the essence of a longing heart remains the same.

(1) Longing That Is Drawn Out

The psalmist is currently in a state of depression and turmoil (v. 5). He stands alone in a foreign land far from home—the land of Jordan, the heights of Hermon, and Mount Mizar (v. 6). With no one to help, tears flow constantly (v. 3). In this moment, longing is being ‘drawn out.’

There is longing that we pull out intentionally, but true longing is the ‘longing that is drawn out’—the kind that visits us unexpectedly during times of pain and touches hidden memories. We miss our mothers, our fathers, our childhood homes, and the times we can never return to.

Even though it is a poignant and heartbreaking longing, it touches us. It hurts, yet we yearn; it brings tears, yet it provides comfort. In this holiday season, I hope there is much of this ‘drawn-out longing.’ It is a warm power and a collection of memories that helps us endure.

(2) Deepening Longing

Secondly, longing must ‘deepen.’ Longing should not end simply with the act of yearning. Through the longing that has been drawn out, our lives must improve and grow deeper. If we long for our mothers, her love must become our love now. If there are painful memories, we should use them as a mirror for self-reflection.

Going a step further, the longings of life must deepen into a longing for God. What the psalmist ultimately sought was God:

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” (v. 1)

The psalmist does not say he is empty; he says he is ‘thirsting,’ seeking the Lord with his very existence. As confessed in verse 7, ‘deep calls to deep.’ In the ‘deep’ of human limitation, he calls out to another ‘deep’—God—and thirsts for Him.

When our longing reaches God, we can overcome futility. When longing becomes difficult, let us go to the God of life and pray deeply. As in verse 8, when we pray to the God who grants love by day and songs by night, what awaits us at the end of longing is not emptiness, but gratitude and comfort.

(3) Sublimated Longing

When longing deepens, ‘sublimation’ finally occurs. It evolves into a higher state. The gaze of longing, once fixed on the past, is sublimated toward the future and eternity, granting us the strength to live the present.

In verse 5, the psalmist declares:

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

Standing up from the place where he shed tears, he commands himself: “Put your hope in God.” This is sublimation. The moment we turn our gaze toward God, longing transforms from regret into praise. For a believer, longing is not a retreat to the past, but a passage toward our heavenly home.

Just as the ancestors of faith in Hebrews 11 did not stumble while longing for the country they had left, we must lift our longing like incense to God. Then, longing becomes hope, faith, and love—the divine power that enables us to live through today.

This Lunar New Year, let us embrace longing and let our hearts grow warmer. Let us grow deeper within that longing. Let us put our hope in God. I bless you to have a holiday where you overcome all things by sublimating longing into praise.
