로마서 3: 신분, 그리스도인(롬 1:6-7)

오늘은 로마서 1장 6-7절 말씀을 나누도록 하겠습니다. 바울은 로마 교회의 성도들에게 편지를 보내며 1절에서 자신을 이렇게 소개합니다. “나는 예수 그리스도의 종이다. 사도로 부르심을 받은 사람이다. 복음을 위해 택정함을 받았다.”

이어 2절부터 복음이 무엇인지 말해 줍니다. 복음은 부활로 하나님의 아들로 인정되신 예수 그리스도에 관한 소식입니다. 그리고 6절과 7절에서는 편지를 받는 로마의 성도들을 언급하기 시작합니다.

“너희도 그들 중에서 예수 그리스도의 것으로 부르심을 받은 자니라. 로마에서 하나님의 사랑하심을 받고 성도로 부르심을 받은 모든 자에게…” 이 짧은 구절 속에는 그리스도인들이 어떤 상황에서도 기억해야 할 보물 같은 진리들이 담겨 있습니다.

1. 예수 그리스도의 것

그리스도인은 누구입니까? 오늘 분명히 기억합시다. 그리스도인은 “예수 그리스도의 것”입니다. 바울은 자신의 회심 이후 항상 “나는 예수 그리스도의 것이다. 가장 귀한 분의 종이다”라고 확신했습니다. 로마의 성도들도 “예수 그리스도께 속한 사람”이라 믿었습니다.

세상은 이렇게 말하지 않습니다. “내 인생은 내 것”이라고 주장합니다. 그러나 바울은 “나는 예수 그리스도의 것이다”라고 말합니다. 우리 역시 이 믿음의 고백으로 살기를 소망합니다. 나 자신을 믿는 것보다 어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 변치 않는 주님의 것이 되는 것이 더 나은 길입니다.

성경은 한 사람을 예수 그리스도의 것으로 삼기 위해 삼위일체 하나님께서 총동원되셨음을 보여줍니다. 성부 하나님은 창세 전에 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하셨고(엡 1:4-5), 성자 예수님은 자신의 생명을 주심으로 우리의 죄값을 치르셨으며(고전 6:20), 성령 하나님은 믿음을 주셔서 우리를 하나님의 자녀로 삼으셨습니다(골 1:13-14).

이 놀라운 은혜와 사랑 속에서 우리의 신분은 변화됩니다. 예수 그리스도의 것이라는 확고한 믿음을 가질 때, 우리는 주님과의 동거와 연합을 누리게 됩니다.

바울은 로마라는 거대한 이방 세계에서, 타락과 방탕으로 가득 찬 도시 속에서 위태롭게 예수 그리스도를 따르는 성도들에게 말합니다. “여러분은 부활하사 하나님의 아들로 확증되신 예수 그리스도의 것으로 부르심을 받은 존귀한 사람들입니다.” 오늘날 우리도 이 고백을 통해 힘과 자부심을 얻어야 합니다.

2. 하나님의 사랑을 받는 자

그리스도인은 “하나님의 사랑을 받은 사람”입니다. “로마에서 하나님의 사랑을 받는 너희여…“라는 바울의 말은 로마의 성도들에게 큰 위로가 됩니다. 로마는 세속적 권세의 중심지였으며 신앙을 지키기 어려운 위험한 곳이었습니다. 그러나 바울은 로마의 성도들에게 “여러분은 하나님의 사랑을 받은 사람들”이라 선언합니다.

하나님의 사랑은 무조건적이고 영원하며 희생적입니다. 하나님은 사랑으로 세상을 창조하셨고, 사랑으로 심판하시며, 사랑으로 구원하셨습니다. 하나님의 사랑은 모든 피조물 속에 스며 있으며, 이 사랑 없이는 누구도 그리스도인이 될 수 없습니다.

코리 텐 붐 여사는 “가장 어두운 곳에서 하나님의 사랑은 더욱 빛났다”고 고백했습니다. 이 사랑은 고난을 이기는 유일한 힘이며, 그리스도인의 삶을 지탱하는 근본입니다. “하나님의 사랑을 확신하는 자는 그 무엇도 두려워할 필요가 없다”(위르겐 몰트만)는 말처럼, 하나님의 사랑은 우리를 넘어서는 경이로움을 지니고 있습니다.

신앙의 출발점과 지속은 하나님의 사랑입니다. 그 사랑을 깨닫고 확신할 때 감사와 헌신, 순종이 깊어집니다. 우리가 그 사랑을 받아들이고 확신할 때, 하나님의 사랑이 우리의 삶을 채우고 변화시킵니다.

말씀을 맺으며

그리스도인은 “예수 그리스도의 것”이며 “하나님의 사랑을 받은 성도”입니다. 이 신분은 우리의 명예이자 특권이며 자랑입니다. 매일 아침 이렇게 선언해 보십시오. “나는 예수 그리스도의 것입니다. 나는 하나님의 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 나는 성도입니다.” 하나님의 사랑과 자비로 충만한 새로운 하루가 될 것입니다.

Romans 3: Identity, Christians (Romans 1:6-7)

Today, we will discuss Romans 1:6-7. In the first verse, Paul introduces himself to the church members in Rome, saying, “I am a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God.”

Then, starting from verse 2, Paul explains what the gospel is. The gospel is the news about Jesus Christ, who was declared to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead. In verses 6 and 7, Paul begins to address the Christians in Rome.

“And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people…” (Romans 1:6-7, NIV). These brief verses contain precious truths that Christians must remember in any circumstance.

1. Belonging to Christ

Who are Christians? Let us firmly remember today: Christians “belong to Jesus Christ.” From the moment of his conversion, Paul always affirmed, “I belong to Jesus Christ. I am the servant of the most precious Lord.” The Roman Christians also believed they belonged to Christ.

The world says otherwise. It proclaims, “My life belongs to me.” This has been a consistent belief across time. However, Paul confidently states, “I belong to Jesus Christ.” May we, too, live with this confession of faith. Trusting in the unchanging Lord is far better than relying on our uncertain selves.

The Bible shows that the Triune God worked together to make one person belong to Christ. God the Father chose us in Christ before the creation of the world (Ephesians 1:4-5). God the Son gave His life to pay for our sins (1 Corinthians 6:20). God the Holy Spirit granted us faith, making us children of God (Colossians 1:13-14).

In this amazing grace and love, our identity is transformed. When we have the firm belief that we belong to Christ, we experience unity and fellowship with the Lord.

Paul speaks to the Roman Christians, living precariously in a vast, pagan world full of sin and debauchery: “You are those who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ, who was declared to be the Son of God in power through His resurrection.” This affirmation is meant to give them courage and pride. We, too, must draw strength and assurance from this confession.

2. Loved by God

Christians are those “loved by God.” Paul’s words, “To all in Rome who are loved by God,” bring great comfort to the believers in Rome. Rome was the center of worldly power, a perilous place for maintaining faith. Yet Paul declares to them, “You are loved by God.”

God’s love is unconditional, eternal, and sacrificial. He created the world out of love, judges the world in love, and saves the world in love. His love permeates all creation, and without it, no one can become a Christian.

Corrie ten Boom, who was arrested after saving 800 Jews, once said, “God’s love shone even brighter in the darkest places. Though we had nothing, we were rich as God’s beloved children.” Like Paul, Corrie ten Boom confessed God’s love even in life-threatening circumstances.

Is God’s love truly this powerful? Look at the words describing His love: infinite, unconditional, sacrificial, and eternal. Its width, length, height, and depth are beyond comprehension (Ephesians 3:18). God’s love is not based on what we have done. He loved us even when we were unworthy. His love endured the cross, and it never fades.

“God is love” (1 John 4:16). Love is His very nature and essence. He creates, judges, and saves the world through love. This love is the source of all existence and life. Every part of creation, from the cosmos to the smallest flower, reflects God’s love.

Without the reality of God’s love, no one can become a Christian. Those who have received His infinite love are Christians. The hymn declares, “Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made… To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry” (Hymn 304).

Though it seems like we are living out our faith by our own decisions—attending church, believing in God—it is all rooted in God’s love. His love is the foundation of our identity as Christians. We became believers because of His love, and we can live as Christians only because of His love.

The consciousness of being loved by God is the fundamental awareness a Christian must have. The deeper this awareness, the more gratitude, dedication, and obedience flow from our lives. We can love because we have been loved.

Christians are those who live by feeding on God’s love. Let us see His love as great and mighty. Though hardships and evil may try to obscure it, the only way to overcome is through His love.

“Those who are sure of God’s love have nothing to fear from this world” (Jürgen Moltmann).

God’s love is filled with wonder and awe. It is not merely intellectual; it must be spiritually experienced. Seek and ask for His love, and it will come to you with overflowing joy, peace, and thankfulness.

Conclusion

Who are Christians? What is their identity?

Christians are those who belong to Jesus Christ and are loved by God. They are called to be His holy people. This is our honor, privilege, and boast.

Every morning, declare this truth: “I belong to Jesus Christ. I am loved by God. I am His holy one.” May your day be filled with His love and mercy, making it a new and blessed morning.
