독수리 날개로 업어온 너희여(출19:1~8)

1.위대한 선포

마태 18:10절 말씀 보면서 출애굽 이야기 35번째 시간 시작하겠습니다. ‘너희는 이 보잘것없는 사람들 가운데 누구 하나라도 업신여기는 일이 없도록 조심하여라. 하늘에 있는 그들의 천사들이 하늘에 계신 내 아버지를 항상 모시고 있다는 것을 알아두어라’.14절입니다. ‘이와같이 하늘에 계신 너희의 아버지께서는 이 보잘것없는 사람들 가운데 하나라도 망하는 것을 원하시지 않는다’

우쭐함이 많아지는 시대에 새겨야 되는 말씀 해 주셨습니다. 요지는 보잘것없는 사람들 귀하게 여기라는 것입니다. ‘보잘것없다’는 표현이 두 번 나옵니다. 헬라어 성경에 보면 ‘보잘것없다’가 미크론(μικρϖν)으로 되있습니다. 이 미크론에서 micro가 나옵니다.‘작다’는 뜻인데 얼마나 작은가 하면 마이크로는 0.000001, 백만분의 1입니다. 보이지도 않게 작은게 ‘마이크로’입니다. 그러니, 얼마나 보잘것없고 하찮은 존재입니까? 그런데도 업신여기지 말고 귀하게 여기라고 하는 것입니다.

이 말씀을 본 이유는 오늘 출애굽기 본문에 보잘것없는 사람들, 자격 없는 사람들, 하찮은 사람들을 ‘귀하게’ 여기시는 하나님의 모습이 나오고 있기에 보게 됐습니다. 이제 우리가 보게될 출애굽기 19장부터 24장까지는 보잘것없는 작은 자들에게 크신 하나님이 나타나(顯現) 선포하고, 격려하고, 힘을 주는 장면입니다. 출애굽의 꽃입니다.

시내산에 하나님이 임재하십니다. 십계명과 율법을 주면서 약속하십니다. 어떤 약속을 하십니까? 5절. 6절입니다. 너희가 앞으로 너희에게 줄 율법, 하나님의 계명을 잘 자키면 너희는 모든 민족 중에서 나의 특별한 소유(보화)가 되고, 모든 민족을 중보하는 제사장 나라, 세상에 빛을 비추는 거룩한 백성이 될 것이다. 엄청난 신분의 상승입니다. 이런 희망과 계획을 ‘약속’한다는 것입니다.

3개월전까지 노예였던 무력한 사람들입니다. 먹고 사는 것만 해결되면 되는 사람들인데 이런 이들에게 ‘너희는 보잘 것 없는 0.000001의 사람들이 아니다. 나의 보물이며, 제사장들이며, 거룩하고 존귀한 내가 택한 사람들이다. 그렇게 하기 위해 구원한 것이고 이게 내 계획이었다’. 밝혀주고 있습니다.

암울했던 과거는 가고, 새 아침의 여명이 솟아나고 있습니다. 놓쳐서는 안되는 장면입니다. 지금도 시내산의 이 사건은 일어나고 있고, 여전히 하나님은 똑같은 희망과 계획을 갖고 계십니다. 이 약속은 지치고 불안한 사람들에게 하는 과장도 아니고 립서비스도 아닙니다. 4절에 근거가 나옵니다.

2.독수리 날개로 업은 것처럼 인도하신 하나님
‘내가 애굽 사람에게 어떻게 행하였음과 내가 어떻게 독수리 날개로 너희를 업어 내게로 인도하였음을 너희가 보았으니라’. 믿어도 된다는 것입니다. 그렇게 믿고 순종하면 ‘나의 보화, 나의 거룩한 백성, 세상의 제사장 나라가 된다’.

다행히 모세의 말을 들은 이스라엘 백성들의 반응이 나쁘지 않습니다. 8절. ‘백성이 일제히 응답하여 이르되 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 우리가 다 행하리이다’. 저는 ‘독수리 날개로 너희를 업어 인도하셨다’는 표현이 얼마나 좋은지 모르겠습니다.

이 사람들은 독수리 생태를 잘 알고 있는 사람들입니다. 이런 그들에게 독수리가 새끼를 업어 보호하는 것처럼 하나님이 자신들에게 그렇게 하셨다는 얘기를 들었을 때 강하게 전달됐을 것입니다.

모세가 신명기 32장에서 마지막 노래를 부르게 되는데 이 말씀의 울림이 얼마나 컸으면 40년이 지났는데도 기억하고 있다가 되새깁니다. ‘여호와께서 그를 황무지에서, 짐승이 부르짖는 광야에서 만나시고 호위하시며 보호하시며 자기의 눈동자 같이 지키셨도다 마치 독수리가 자기의 보금자리를 어지럽게 하며 자기의 새끼 위에 너풀거리며 그의 날개를 펴서 새끼를 받으며 그의 날개 위에 그것을 업는 것 같이 여호와께서 홀로 그를 인도하셨고 그와 함께 한 다른 신이 없었도다'(신32:10~12)

독수리가 자기 새끼를 돌보고 훈련하는 것처럼 자신들을 그렇게 인도하셨던 하나님의 구원과 은혜를 찬송하는 것입니다. 모세는 유언과도 같은 이 노래를 부르고, 하나님의 통보를 받습니다. ‘너는 가나안 땅에 들어가지 못한다. 바라보기만 해라, 너의 소임은 여기까지다’. 섭섭했겠지만 모세는 독수리 새끼같은 자신들이 떨어질 때마다 업어서 이끌어 주셨던 하나님의 은혜와 인도하심을 알기에 따지지 않고 묵묵히 따릅니다.

‘독수리 날개로 업어온 너희’가 이스라엘 백성들 뿐이겠습니까? ‘저’도 들어가고, ‘여러분들’도 들어갑니다. 여러분들은 하나님이 독수리 날개로 업어 오는 것을 경험한적이 있느냐?고 물으면 어떻게 대답하시겠습니까? 어떤 대답을 하는 분들이 많을까요? ‘해 준게 뭐가 있는데요?’ 힘들어서 내뱉을 수 있지만 이런 수준은 넘으면 좋겠습니다.

하나님께서 이스라엘을 업어 온 이유는 편하게 살게 하려고 한게 아닙니다. 하나님이 그들을 구원하사 자유를 주신 것은 그들이 하나님의 특별한 존재가 되서 세상의 제사장 나라, 거룩한 백성이 되게 하기 위해서 업어 오신 것인데,우리도 동일한 이유로 업어 오신 것입니다. 실감이 안 날 수 있겠지만 저와 여러분이 하나님을 알아보고, 예수를 나의 주님으로 고백하는 ‘구원’이 하나님의 업어 오심입니다. 어미 독수리가 바라는 게 뭡니까? 나는 것입니다. 죽도록 날개짓해서 날아 올라 더 광대한 세계를 보는 것인데, 독수리 하나님이 우리에게 바라는 것도 다르지 않습니다. 날아올라 광대한 하나님의 세계를 보는 것입니다.

세상은 하나님께 속해 있기에 독수리 날개로 업는 하나님의 일은 계속되고 있습니다. 지금은 성령께서 독수리의 역할을 하십니다. 성령께서는 우리의 연약함을 아시기에 넘어지고, 지칠때 마다 돕고, 인도하십시다. 날고 싶으면 성령의 도움을 받으면 됩니다.

떨어지고, 실패할 때마다 말할 수 없는 탄식의 마음을 가지고 간구하시는(롬8:26) 성령을 구할 때 성령은 우리를 업어 가야 할 곳으로 인도하십니다. 성령만이 우리를 힘차게 날아오르는 강건한 독수리로 만들어 줍니다.

3.독수리되기
어미 독수리의 사랑과 보호를 받은 새끼 독수리는 홀로 서서 자신의 사명을 감당하는 독수리가 되야 합니다. 독수리는 닭이 되면 안됩니다.

이라크 전쟁이 한창일 때 남아공의 투투 대주교가 미국을 방문합니다. 노벨 평화상 수상자라는 명망으로 미국의 지도급 인사들 6000명이 모여서 강연을 듣게 됩니다. 그리고 강연 막바지에 닭을 치는 농부 얘기를 했다고 합니다.

농부에게 놓아 기르는 닭이 수백마리가 있는데 그 가운데 새끼때부터 닭들과 함께한 독수리가 한 마리 있었다는 것입니다. 이 독수리 어떻게 됐을까요? 닭들과 함께 살다 날지도 않고, 먹는 것도 닭들처럼 쪼아서 먹는 독수리가 됩니다. 보다 못한 농부가 독수리를 안고 산 꼭대기에 갑니다. 손끝에 독수리를 올려 놓고 소리를 지릅니다. You are an eagle. Fly, Fly, Fly. 하늘 끝까지 날아가.

투투 주교가 이 말을 격하게 하고 잠시 침묵한 후에 미국 청중들에게 묵직한 한마디를 남깁니다. ‘당신들은 독수리입니다. 그런데 지금 무슨 짓을 하고 있습니까?

독수리는 파리를 잡지 않는다고 합니다. 폭풍이 오면 작은 새들은 나무 가지를 찾아 숨지만 독수리는 그 위를 날아 폭풍을 피합니다. ‘독수리 하나님’이 당신의 날개로 업어 구원했다면 구원을 받은 이들은 닭도 아니고, 새도 아니고 독수리가 되는게 맞습니다.

하나님의 특별한 소유, 제사장 나라, 거룩한 백성으로 존재하는 우리는 누가 뭐래도 ‘독수리’지 ‘닭’이 아닙니다. 독수리는 독수리의 모습을 갖는게 맞습니다. 가끔이라도 물어야 합니다. 우리는 지금 독수리인가? 독수리라면 독수리 처럼 살고 있는가?

하나님은 우리들이 높게 날기를 원하십니다. 요즘 벽이 얼마나 높습니까?. 넘어 갈 수가 없습니다. 문 하나를 내지 못합니다. 독수리 처럼 날아 벽을 넘는 수 밖에 없습니다. 이 일을 하게 하려고 이스라엘과 교회를 부르셨고, 보잘것없어 보이는 우리를 구원하신 것입니다. ‘독수리 날개로 업어온 너희여’, 이 감동적인 서사가 저와 여러분들에게 깊은 울림을 주면 좋겠습니다.

돌아가신 이어령 선생님이 어느해인가 새해를 맞이하면서 기도했던 기도문입니다.

벼랑 끝에서 새해를 맞습니다.
덕담 대신 날개를 주소서.
어떻게 여기까지 온 사람들입니까.

험난한 기아의 고개에서도
부모의 손을 뿌리친 적 없고
아무리 위험한 전란의 들판이라도
등에 업은 자식을 내려놓지 않았습니다.
남들이 앉아 있을 때 걷고
그들이 걸으면 우리는 뛰었습니다.

숨 가쁘게 달려와
이제 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이 눈앞인데 그냥 추락할 수는 없습니다.
벼랑인줄도 모르는 사람들입니다.
싸움밖에 모르는 정치인들에게는
비둘기의 날개를 주시고
살기에 지친 서민에게는
독수리의 날개를 주십시오.
주눅 들린 기업인들에게는
갈매기의 비행을 가르쳐 주시고
진흙 바닥의 지식인들에게는
구름보다 높이 나는 종달새의 날개를 보여 주소서.

날게 하소서…
이 사회가 갈등으로 더 이상 찢기기 전에 기러기처럼 나는 법을 가르쳐 주소서.

소리를 내어 서로 격려하고
선두의 자리를 바꾸어 가며
대열을 이끌어 간다는 저 신비한 기러기처럼
우리 모두를 날게 하소서.

날자 날자 한 번만 더 날아보자꾸나.
벼랑끝에서 날게 하소서.

우리도 이런 기도하십시다. 독수리 날개로 업혀온 자의 감격과 소명이 있는 여러분의 인생이 되기를 축복합니다.

You Who Have Come Up on Eagles’ Wings (Exodus 19:1-8)

1.The Great Proclamation
We begin the 35th hour of the Exodus story with the words of Matthew 18:10: ‘Take care that you do not look down on any of these lowly people. Know that their angels in heaven are always with my Father in heaven’.Verse 14: ‘In the same way, your Father in heaven does not want one of these little people to fail.

In a time of increasing arrogance, these are words we need to take to heart. The point is to value the little people. The word ‘little’ is used twice. In the Greek Bible, the word for insignificant is micron (μικρϖν). From this micron comes micro, which means “small,” and micro is 0.000001, or one part in a million. It’s so small that you can’t even see it. So it’s saying, “Don’t despise it, but cherish it,” because it’s so insignificant and insignificant.

I’m looking at this because in today’s Exodus reading, we have a picture of God ‘valuing’ the insignificant, the undeserving, the insignificant, and the insignificant. In Exodus chapters 19 to 24, as we’re going to see, we have a big God manifesting, proclaiming, encouraging, and empowering the insignificant and the small. It’s the flower of the Exodus.

God’s presence at Mount Sinai. He gives the Ten Commandments and the Law and makes a promise. What promises does He make? Verse 5. Verse 6: If you keep the law, the commandments of God that I am about to give you, you will be my special possession (treasure), a royal priesthood, a nation of priests to intercede for all peoples, a holy nation, a light to the world. What an elevation of status, to be ‘promised’ this hope and plan.

These are helpless people who were slaves three months ago, people who just need to eat, and he says to them, “You are not the 0.000001 people who are nothing. You are my treasure, you are priests, you are holy, you are honoured, you are my chosen people, and I saved you for this, and this is my plan. It is illuminating.

The dark past is passing away and the dawn of a new morning is breaking. It is a scene not to be missed. This event at Sinai is still happening today, and God still has the same hope and plan. This promise is not hyperbole, nor is it lip service to a weary and anxious people. Verse 4 gives us the proof.

2.God carried them up as if on eagles’ wings
‘For you have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to me’. If you believe and obey, you become ‘my treasure, my holy people, a kingdom of priests to the world’.

Fortunately, the Israelites’ response to Moses’ words is not bad. Verse 8. ‘And the people answered with one accord, saying, We will do all that the LORD has commanded us’. I love the phrase ‘He carried you on eagles’ wings’.

These were people who were familiar with eagle ecology, and it must have struck a chord with them when they were told that God had done that to them, just as an eagle carries and protects its young.

When Moses sings his final song in Deuteronomy 32, imagine the resonance of those words. ‘The LORD met him in the wilderness, in the wilderness where the beasts cried out, and escorted him, and protected him, and kept him as the pupil of his eye; as the eagle disturbs his nest, and spreads out his wings to receive his young, and takes them up on his wings, so the LORD alone led him, and there was no other god with him’ (Deut. 32:10-12).

Moses sings this song, which is like a testament, and is informed by God: ‘You shall not enter the land of Canaan. You shall only look on, your labour is finished’. Despite his disappointment, Moses doesn’t question God’s grace and guidance, knowing that God has picked him up like an eagle’s nestling every time he’s fallen.

“You who have been picked up on eagle’s wings” is not just the Israelites. It includes “me” and it includes “you”. If I were to ask you if you have ever experienced God picking you up on eagle’s wings, how would you answer? How many of you would say, “What have you done for me?” It’s hard to say, but I hope we can get beyond that.

God didn’t lift up Israel to make life easy for them. He lifted them up to save them and give them freedom so that they could be God’s special people, a kingdom of priests, a holy nation in the world, and we are lifted up for the same reason. It may seem unbelievable, but God’s coming to you and me is the ‘salvation’ of recognising God and confessing Jesus as my Lord. What does a mother eagle want, I ask you, is to soar and see the vastness of the world, and what God the eagle wants for us is no different: to soar and see the vastness of God’s world.

The world belongs to God, so God’s work of soaring on eagle wings continues. Right now, the Holy Spirit is the eagle. The Holy Spirit knows our weaknesses, so He helps and guides us whenever we fall, whenever we get tired. If we want to fly, we need the Holy Spirit’s help.

When we seek the Holy Spirit, praying with unspeakable groaning (Romans 8:26) whenever we fall and fail, the Holy Spirit will pick us up and take us where we need to go. Only the Holy Spirit can make us strong eagles who soar with power.

3.Become an eagle
After being loved and protected by the mother eagle, the young eagle must become an eagle that stands alone and fulfils its mission. An eagle must not become a chicken.

At the height of the Iraq War, Archbishop Tutu of South Africa visits the United States. He’s a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and he’s given a lecture to 6000 of America’s leaders. Towards the end of the lecture, he tells a story about a farmer who hits his chickens.

The farmer had hundreds of free-range chickens, and one of them was an eagle that had been with the chickens since it was a chick. What happened to the eagle? It became an eagle that lived with the chickens, didn’t fly, and pecked and ate like the chickens. A poor farmer goes to the top of a mountain with an eagle in his arms. He puts the eagle on his fingertips and shouts. You are an eagle. Fly, fly, fly. Fly to the end of the sky.

Bishop Tutu echoes this, and after a moment of silence, he leaves his American audience with a poignant comment: ‘You are an eagle, but what are you doing?

It is said that eagles do not catch flies. When a storm comes, small birds seek the branches of trees to hide, but eagles fly above them and escape the storm. If ‘God the eagle’ has taken them up on his wings and saved them, then those who are saved are not chickens, not birds, but eagles.

We who exist as God’s special possession, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a holy people, are by definition “eagles” and not “chickens.” Eagles are supposed to be eagles. Sometimes we have to ask. Are we eagles, and if so, are we living like eagles?

God wants us to fly high. How high are the walls these days? I can’t get over it. I can’t get a single door. He called Israel and the church to do this, and he saved us, the seemingly insignificant, to do this. ‘You who have come up on eagle’s wings,’ I hope this inspiring narrative resonates deeply with me and with you.

This is a prayer that the late teacher Eo-ryeong Lee prayed for while welcoming the New Year one year.

I meet the new year on the edge of a cliff.
Give me wings instead of virtue.
How did they come this far.

From the harsh passes of hunger
Never rooted out their parents’ hands
No matter how dangerous the fields of war.
They never put down the children they carried on their backs.
We walked when others sat.
When they walked, we ran.

We ran, breathless.
Now the land flowing with milk and honey is in front of us, we can’t just fall.
To people who don’t even know it’s a cliff.
For politicians who know nothing but fighting
Give them the wings of a dove
and the common people who are tired of living
wings of an eagle.
To businessmen who are intimidated
teach them to fly like seagulls.
And to the intellectuals on the muddy ground
show them the wings of a lark that soars higher than the clouds.

Let us fly…
Teach us to fly like geese before this society is further torn apart by conflict.

Let us make a noise and encourage each other
and take turns leading.
like those mysterious geese that lead the pack.
Let us all fly.

Let us fly, let us fly, let us fly one more time.
Let us fly off the cliff.

Let us pray, too. May your life be filled with the excitement and calling of those who have been lifted up on eagle’s wings.
