출애굽 이야기 9: ‘나’보다 중요한 것(출3:11~14)

1. 모세의 거절
출애굽 이야기 9 번째 시간입니다. 지난 주부터 3장을 보기 시작했습니다. 3장의 배경은 미디안 광야 호렙산 근처입니다. 모세가 장인 이드로의 양떼를 몰고 가다 타지 않는 떨기나무를 보게 되면서 사건이 시작됩니다.

하나님이 떨기나무 불꽃 가운데서 모세를 부르게 되고, 모세는 애굽에서 고생하는 자신의 동족 이스라엘 자손을 구해 오라는 명령을 받게 됩니다. 모세가 순순히 ‘그러겠다’ 그랬으면 3장과 4장은 금새 끝났을 텐데 잘 아시는 것처럼 모세와 하나님은 옥신각신, 성경에서 하나님과 인간 사이에 나누는 가장 긴 대화를 하게 됩니다.

모세는 ‘가겠다’는 대답 대신 갈 수 없다는 말만 되풀이 합니다. 이래서 못가고, 저래서 갈 수 없고. ① 3:11. ‘제가 무엇이라고 감히 바로에게 가서 그들을 이끌어 내겠습니까?’(새번역). 그럴만한 능력이 자신에게는 없다는 것입니다. ② 3:13. 설사 간다해도 사람들이 당신에 대해 물어보면 나는 아는 게 없습니다. ‘나는 당신의 이름 조차 모릅니다’ ③ 4:1. 나에게는 사람들이 믿어줄 만한 권위도 없습니다. 40년 만에 지팡이 하나 들고 나타난 내 말을 누가 믿어 주겠습니까? ④ 4:10. 결정적으로 자기는 말을 못한다는 것입니다. 애굽에 가면 말로 설득하고 말로 싸워야 하는데 입이 뻣뻣해서 그러지 못한다는 것입니다.

결론은 4:13입니다. ‘주님, 죄송합니다. 제발 보낼만한 사람을 보내시기 바랍니다’ 하나님이 거절 당하신 것입니다.

2. 내가 중요하다.
이런 모세에 대해서 여러분들은 어떻게 생각하십니까? 여러분이 모세라면 어떻게 하셨을 것 같으세요. 모세의 입장에서 생각하면 충분히 그럴 수 있는 상황입니다. 40년 세월 지났지만 이집트가 얼마나 막강한지를 모세가 잊었겠습니까? 거기가 어디라고 ‘가겠다’, 선듯 나설 수 있었겠습니까?

사람이 가진 속성 중에 하나가 두렵거나 불안하면 회피하는 것인데 모세로서는 할 수 없다고 말하는 것이 맞았을 것입니다. 어떻게 보면 모세는 할만큼 한 것입니다. 자신의 부족함을 그대로 인정하고, 하나님이 누구인지를 물으면서 솔직한 대화를 이어 간것만 해도 대단한 것입니다. 하지만 모세는 ‘선’ 하나를 넘지 못합니다. ‘자기’라는 선에 막혀 더 나가지 못하고 머뭇거립니다.

사람은 자기를 비하해도 주춤하고. 자기를 높여도 주춤합니다. 자기 비하도, 자기 교만도 결국은 ‘자기’만 보는 것입니다. 둘 다 ‘자기’, ‘나’가 문제입니다. ‘자기’라는 선을 넘어야 ‘다른 세계’가 펼쳐지는데 ‘자기’에 갇히면 나가지를 못합니다. 고질적인 문제입니다. 모세가 겸손한 것 같지만그 이면에는 견고한 ‘자기’가 자리잡고 있습니다. 자신의 판단, 자신의 경험이하나님의 역사를 막고 있는 것입니다.

하나님이 이걸 깨고 있는 것입니다. 하나님과 모세의 대화를 보시면 알겠지만, 하나님은 모세가 두려워하고, 불안해 하는 것에 대해서 답을 다 주십니다. 그런데도 계속 주춤거립니다.하나님이 모세에게 주는 답은 하나입니다. 중요한 것은 ‘네’가 아니라 ‘나, 하나님’이다. ‘못한다. 없다’라는 네 판단에 갇히지 마라.

표한번 보세요. 부족해도 내가 너와 함께 한다(3:12), 나는 스스로 있는 존재다(3:14). 신뢰해도 된다. 그러니 두려워하지 말고 가라. 못 믿겠으면 손에 있는 지팡이 던져봐라(4:2). 손을 품에 넣어봐라(4:6) 지팡이는 뱀이 되고, 손은 문둥병이 걸릴 것이다. 다시 잡아라. 다시 빼라. 말 못한다고? 말 잘하는 네 형이 하면 된다(4:16).

무슨 사인입니까? 부족한 ‘너’는 그만 보고 ‘나’를 보라는 것입니다. 내가 너와 함께한다(3:12). 나는 자존하는 자다(3:14).너희를 구원하는 자비한 자다(3:7). 너희들의 조상 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 한 약속을 지키는 신실한 자다(3:15). 이적을 행하는 능력이 있다(3:20. 4:3.4:6). 모세 자신보다 더 중요한 존재가 있다는 것을 알려주고 계신 것입니다.

오늘 설교 제목 보십시오. ‘나’보다 중요한 것’. 천상천하 유아독존, 자기 잘난 맛에 사는 세상에서 쓰기 힘든 말입니다. 하지만 ‘나’보다 중요한 것이 있다는 것을 아는 것이 신앙의 출발이고, 토대고, 능력입니다. 주님도 분명히 말씀하셨습니다. ‘나를 따르려면 자기를 부인하고 따라라’(마16:24). 무슨 말입니까? ‘나’에게 주도권이 있지 않다는 것입니다. 기분 나쁜 말이지만 잘 생각해 보십시오. 맞는 말입니다.

C.S.Lewis가 말한 것처럼 사람은 하나님 안에 있을 때, 내 인생의 주도권을 하나님께 이양 할 때 훨씬 높은 차원의 ‘자신’을 발견할 수 있습니다.

오늘 모세의 모습을 보면서 두 가지 묵상하겠습니다. 첫 번째 묵상은 나는 중요하다. 하지만 하나님이 더 중요하다. 두 번째 묵상은 (그러므로) 하나님께 시선을 돌리자.

3. 묵상.
(1) ‘나’는 중요하다. 하지만 ‘하나님’이 더 중요하다.
첫 번째 묵상입니다. ‘나’는 중요하지만 ‘하나님’은 더 중요하다. 묵상하시기 바랍니다. 정말 누가 더 중요합니까? 하나님의 형상을 지닌 어느 누구도 소중하지 않은 사람은 없습니다. 다 존엄하고, 다 중요합니다. 하지만 이 존엄과 소중함은 하나님을 중요하게 여기는 사람에게 더 빛나고 가치있게 나타납니다.

세속의 사회에서는 ‘하나님’이 없기에 ‘내’가 중요할 수 밖에 없습니다. 문제는 우리, 그리스도인들 입니다. 태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하셨다는 선포로 시작하는 성경을 믿고, 하나님께 기도를 하고, 하나님께 예배를 드리며, 하나님이 하신 역사의 일들을 가지고 신앙을 고백하는 우리는 어떤 것을 중요하게 생각하는가? 이게 문제입니다.

내가 중요합니까? 하나님이 중요합니까? 하나님이 중요하다면 하나님을 중요하게 여기는 모습과 행동은 얼마나 되겠습니까? 혹시 말로만 하나님이 중요하다고 말하면서 사는 것은 아닌지, 걱정스럽습니다.

오늘 가정 주일입니다. 가정에 있는 나의 자녀들이, 남편과 아내가 나를 볼때 어떤 생각을 할까요? 내 엄마와 아빠가 살아가는 모습을 보면서 하나님을 정말 소중하게 생각한다고 생각할까요? 아니면 다른 생각을 할까요? 자녀들에게 가르쳐주는 성공과 행복의 길에 하나님은 얼마나 있을까요? 지금의 모습이 어떤지는 모르겠지만 확실한 것은 그리스도인에게 중요한 것은 ‘내’가 아니라 ‘하나님’이라는 것입니다.

왜 그런지 말씀 몇 절만 보면 금방 알 수 있습니다. 행17:28. ‘우리는 하나님 안에서 살고, 움직이고, 존재하고 있습니다’. 내 소중한 생명의 알파와 오메가는 내가 아니고 하나님이십니다. 하나님이 나보다 중요합니다. 사55:9. ‘하늘이 땅보다 높듯이 나의 길은 너희의 길보다 높으며, 나의 생각은 너희의 생각보다 높다’ 하나님이 나보다 고수입니다. 내가 맞다, 내가 경험해 봤다. 그러면서 우기는 것은 지혜롭지 못합니다. 하나님은 조변석개하는 나보다 훨씬 더 중요합니다.

어떻게 살아야 하는지 알고 싶으면 자신을 살피기 전에 ‘마음을 꿰뚫어 보고, 뱃속까지 환히 들여다보는’(렘17:10,공동) 하나님을 살피는 것이 백배 천배 효과적입니다. 예수 그리스도가 길이고, 진리고 생명이지(요14:6), 나는 아닙니다. 시선은 내가 아니라 하나님께 가야 합니다.

(2) 하나님께 시선을 돌리라.
하나님이 나보다 중요하다면 하나님을 바라 봐야 합니다. 시선을 하나님께 두라. 두 번째 묵상입니다. 하나님께 시선을 두고, 시선을 집중하는 것은 하나님을 중요하게 여기는 자의 첫번째 일입니다. 중요한 데 안 본다. 중요하지 않은 것입니다.

시선을 주님께 두는 것은 축복이고, 특권입니다.시34:5 ‘그를 쳐다보는 자, 그 얼굴 빛나고, 부끄러운 꼴 당하지 아니하리라'(공동) 히12:2. ‘믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자’. 시16:8 ‘내가 항상 여호와를 바라보노라 그가 내 우편에 계시므로 내가 요동치 아니하리로다’. 미7:7. ‘나는 여호와를 바라고 바라며 나의 구원의 하나님을 기다리나니 나의 하나님이 들으시리로다’.

[시선]이라는 찬양에 보면 주님께 시선을 돌리는 자의 삶의 변화가 너무도 아름답게 노래되고 있습니다.

내게로부터 눈을 들어 주를 보기 시작할 때, 주의 일을 보겠네
내 작은 마음 돌이키사 하늘의 꿈 꾸게 하네, 주님을 볼 때.
모든 시선을 주님께 드리고 살아계신 하나님을 느낄 때
내 삶은 주의 역사가 되고 하나님이 일하기 시작하네

성령이 나를 변화시켜 모든 두려움 사라질 때, 주의 일을 보겠네
황폐한 땅 한 가운데서 주님 마음 알게 되리 주님을 볼 때
모든 시선을 주님께 드리고 전능하신 하나님을 느낄 때
세상은 주의 나라가 되고 하나님이 일하기 시작하네.

시선을 하나님께 두면, 이상하지요. 자기라는 선을 넘습니다. 보잘 것 없던 자신의 선을 넘고, 우쭐하는 자신의 선도 넘습니다. 비하하던 자가 용기를 얻고, 교만하던 자가 겸손을 얻습니다. 불안은 옅어지고, 믿음이 깊어집니다. 내 뜻 보다 하나님의 뜻을 묻게 됩니다. 따뜻해 집니다. 찰나가 아니라 목적을 생각합니다. 만사가 원망이 아니라 만사가 감사입니다.

안타깝게도 많은 이들의 신앙이 하나님이 아니라 내가 중심이 되 버렸습니다. 신앙도 내 취향에 맞아야 하고, 말씀이 아니라 내가 옳고 그름의 기준이 되버렸습니다. 바꿔야 하나님의 역사가 일어납니다.

나에게서 하나님으로 시선을 바꾸게 하시는 성령의 은혜가 여러분들과 여러분들의 가정 안에 넘치기를 바랍니다. 떨기나무 불꽃 가운데서 모세를 안심시키시고, 인도하신 하나님의 은혜가 오늘 아침 우리 모두에게 임하기를 바라겠습니다.

Exodus Story 9: Something Bigger Than ‘Me'(Exodus 3:11-14)

1. Moses’ refusal
This is the ninth hour of the Exodus story. We started last week with chapter 3. The setting of chapter 3 is near Mount Horeb in the wilderness of Midian. The events begin when Moses is herding his father-in-law Jethro’s flocks and sees a quaking tree that is not burning.

God calls to Moses from the flames of the bush, and Moses is commanded to rescue his people, the children of Israel, who are struggling in Egypt. If Moses had simply said yes, chapters 3 and 4 would have been over in no time, but as we know, Moses and God have the longest conversation between God and man in the Bible.

Instead of saying, “I will go,” Moses just keeps saying that he can’t go. He can’t go because of this, he can’t go because of that. ① 3:11. ‘What shall I say, that I dare go to Pharaoh and bring them out?'(NIV). He doesn’t have the ability to do that. ② 3:13. Even if I go, when people ask about you, I don’t know anything about you: ‘I don’t even know your name’ ③ 4:1. I don’t have the authority to make people believe me. Who will believe me when I show up with a staff after 40 years? ④ 4:10. Crucially, I can’t speak. When I go to Egypt, I have to persuade with words, I have to fight with words, and I can’t do that because my mouth is stiff.

The conclusion is 4:13: “Lord, I’m sorry. Please send someone worth sending’. God is rejected.

2. I’m important.
What do you think about this Moses, what do you think you would do if you were Moses? If you put yourself in Moses’ shoes, it’s a very understandable situation. After 40 years, do you think Moses would have forgotten how powerful Egypt was, and would he have been able to say, “I’m going,” and step up to the plate?

It would have been right to say that Moses couldn’t, because one of the attributes of man is to retreat when he’s afraid or anxious, and in a way, Moses did as much as he could: he admitted his inadequacies, he asked who God was, and he had an honest conversation. But Moses can’t cross the ‘line’ – he’s stuck at the line of ‘self’ and he can’t go any further.

People shrink from self-deprecation. They shrink from self-exaltation. Self-deprecation and self-praise are both problems of ‘self’ and ‘me’. When you cross the line of ‘self’, the ‘other world’ unfolds, but when you get stuck in ‘self’, you can’t get out. It’s an endemic problem. Moses seems to be humble, but underneath that is a solid ‘self’. His own judgment, his own experience, is blocking God’s work.

If you watch the conversation between God and Moses, God has all the answers to what Moses is afraid of, what he’s insecure about, and yet he still hesitates.

There’s only one answer that God gives Moses. It’s not “you,” it’s “I, God. “I can’t. Don’t get stuck in your own judgment.

Look at the sign. I am with you (3:12), I am what you are (3:14). You can trust. So go, do not be afraid. If you don’t believe, throw the staff in your hand (4:2). Put your hand into your arm (4:6), and the staff will become a snake, and your hand will become leprous. Grab it again. Take it back. You can’t speak? Your brother, who is a good speaker, can do it (4:16).

What is the sign? Stop looking at the lacking “you” and start looking at “me.” I am with you (3:12). I am the self-sufficient one (3:14).I am the merciful one who saves you (3:7). I am the faithful one who keeps his promises to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (3:15). He has the power to perform miracles (3:20. 4:3.4.4:6). God is letting us know that there is someone more important than Moses himself.

Look at the title of today’s sermon, Something More Important Than ‘Me’. It’s a hard word to write in a world of egos, narcissism, and self-importance. But knowing that there is something more important than ‘me’ is the beginning, the foundation, the power of faith. Our Lord was clear: ‘If you want to come after me, deny yourself and take up your cross and follow me’ (Matthew 16:24). What that means is that ‘I’ am not in control. It’s an unpleasant statement, but think about it. It’s true.

As C.S. Lewis said, a person finds a much higher level of ‘self’ when they are in God, when they hand over the initiative of their life to God.

As we look at the image of Moses today, let’s reflect on two things. The first is that I am important. But God is more important. The second reflection is (therefore) let’s turn our attention to God.

3. Reflections.
(1) ‘I’ is important. But God is more important.
This is the first meditation: I am important, but God is more important. Ponder. Who is really more important? No one who bears the image of God is unimportant. All are dignified, all are important. But this dignity and importance is more radiant and valuable to those who make God matter.

In a secular society, there is no “God,” so it’s all about “me.” The problem is us, Christians. Those of us who believe in the Bible, which begins with the proclamation that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, who pray to God, who worship God, who profess our faith with the works of God’s history, what do we consider important? That’s the question.

Do I matter, does God matter, and if God matters, how much do we look and act like we care about God? I wonder if we’re just saying we care about God, but not living it.

Today is Family Sunday. I wonder what my children at home, my husband and wife, think when they see me? Will they think that my mom and dad really value God by the way they live? Or will they think something else: How much is God in the path to success and happiness that I’m teaching them? I don’t know what it looks like now, but what I do know is that for Christians, it’s not “me” that matters, it’s “God”.

It only takes a few verses to see why. Acts 17:28: ‘We live and move and have our being in God’. The alpha and omega of my precious life is God, not me. God is more important than me. Isaiah 55:9. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts’ God is higher than me. It’s not wise to say, “I’m right, I’ve been there, I’ve done that,” and then cry. God is far more important than my fumbling self.

If you want to know how to live, before you look at yourself, it’s a hundred times more effective to look at God, who “searches through your heart and looks right down to your stomach” (Jeremiah 17:10). Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), not me. Your eyes should be on God, not me.

(2) Keep your eyes on God.
If God is more important than me, then I must look to God. Keep your eyes on God. This is the second meditation. Setting your eyes on God, focusing your gaze on God, is the first thing a person who cares about God does. You don’t look at something important. It’s not important.

It is a blessing, a privilege, to keep our eyes on the Lord.Psalm 34:5 ‘He who looks to Him, whose face shines, will not be put to shame’ Hebrews 12:2. ‘Let us look to Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith’. Ps.16:8. ‘I will always look to the LORD, for he is at my right hand; I shall not be moved’. Micah 7:7. ‘I will hope in the LORD, I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear.’

The song “Gaze” sings so beautifully of the transformation in the life of one who turns his eyes to the Lord.

When you lift up your eyes from me and begin to see, I will see your works. My little heart turns and dreams of heaven, When I see Thee. When I give all my eyes to Thee and feel the living God. My life becomes Your work, and God begins to work.

When the Holy Spirit changes me, and all my fears are gone, I’ll see Your work. In the midst of a desolate land, I’ll know Your heart When I see You. When all my eyes are on You and I feel God Almighty. The world becomes Your kingdom, and God begins to work.

When you set your eyes on God, it’s strange, you cross the line of self. You cross the line of insignificance, you cross the line of pride. The demeaned are encouraged, the proud are humbled, anxiety is diminished, faith is deepened. You seek God’s will rather than your own. You feel warmer. I think about the purpose, not the moment. I give thanks in all things, not grumbling.

Sadly, for many, their faith has become centered on me, not God. Faith has become about me, and I’ve become the standard of right and wrong, not the Word. That has to change, and then God can work.

May the grace of the Holy Spirit, which shifts our focus from me to God, overflow in you and in your homes. May the grace of God that reassured and guided Moses in the midst of the bush fire. May it be upon us all this morning.
