로마서 44: 아바의 자녀 2 (롬 8:17~18)

1. 아바 아버지

어거스틴의 『고백론』에 나오는 기도문 한 구절로 시작합니다. “지극히 높으시고, 지극히 선하시며, 지극히 강력하시고, 지극히 전능하시며, 지극히 자비롭고 지극히 의로우신 분, 깊이 숨어 계시나 지극히 가까이 계시는 분, 아름다움과 힘의 완전함이시며, 견고하시나 파악할 수 없고, 변함없으시나 모든 것을 변화시키시는 분, 결코 새롭지 않고 결코 낡지 않으시며, 모든 것을 새롭게 하시고 교만한 자들을 그들이 알지 못하는 사이에 늙게 하시는 분, 항상 활동하시나 항상 안식하시며, 당신 자신에게로 모으시나 부족함이 없으시고, 지탱하시며 채우시고 보호하시며, 창조하시고 양육하시며 성숙에 이르게 하시고, 당신께는 부족한 것이 아무것도 없음에도 찾으시는 분. 당신은 타오름 없이 사랑하시고, 불안함 없는 방식으로 질투하시며, 후회의 고통 없이 ‘후회'(창 6:6)하시고, 노하시면서도 평온함을 유지하시나이다… 나의 하나님, 나의 생명, 나의 거룩한 달콤함이시여, 이 말들로 제가 무슨 말을 했나이까? 당신에 대해 말할 때 그 누가 무엇을 제대로 말할 수 있겠나이까?” (고백론 1권 4장)

이것은 말로 다 담을 수 없는 크신 하나님을 향한 경탄입니다. 바울 식으로 말하면 이토록 위대하신 하나님이 ‘아바 아버지’가 되어 주신 것에 대한 고마움의 표현입니다. 신자의 삶은 시간이 흐를수록 하나님을 더 깊이 알아가고, 갈망하며, 그 안에서 안식을 누리는 삶입니다. 우리의 신분은 하찮지 않습니다. 하나님은 그냥 아버지가 아니라 팔 벌려 안아 주시는 ‘아빠(Abba)’이십니다. 고통 중의 신자들이 간절히 아버지를 부르며 위로를 얻은 이유는, 지극히 높고 의로우신 하나님이 나의 아버지라는 사실 때문입니다. 내가 아바의 자녀라는 사실을 결코 놓치지 마십시다.

2. 아바의 자녀

바울은 아바의 자녀들이 누리는 특권을 세 가지로 밝히고 있습니다. 17~18절에 나오는 세 개의 선포는 이러합니다. 첫째, 아바의 자녀는 하나님이 정하신 상속자다. 둘째, 상속자에게는 고난이 있다. 셋째, 상속자인 아바의 자녀에게는 영광이 있고, 그 영광은 고난보다 크다.

(1) 아바의 자녀는 하나님의 상속자다

“자녀이면 또한 상속자 곧 하나님의 상속자요 그리스도와 함께 한 상속자니”(롬 8:17a). 신자는 종이 아니라 자녀이기에 상속자가 되는 것은 당연합니다. 상속은 물려받는 것인데, 돈이나 부동산이 아니라 하나님을 상속받는 것입니다.

시편 기자는 “내 육체와 마음은 쇠약하나 하나님은 내 마음의 반석이시요 영원한 분깃이시라”(시 73:26)고 고백했습니다. 하나님보다 큰 유산은 없습니다. 또한 ‘그리스도와 함께한 상속자’라는 말은 친자이신 예수님이 받으신 하늘 보좌와 부활의 영광, 만물 통치를 공동으로 상속받는다는 뜻입니다. 신자는 하나님의 상속자라는 고급한 신분을 기억하며 아버지의 명예를 걸고 명예롭게 살아야 합니다.

(2) 상속자에게는 고난이 있다

바울의 두 번째 선포는 고난입니다. “우리가 그와 함께 영광을 받기 위하여 고난도 함께 받아야 할 것이니라”(롬 8:17b). 아바의 자녀라도 고난은 아프고 싫지만, 성경은 고난을 부정하지 않습니다.

주님이 십자가를 통해 영광에 이르셨듯, 고난의 한복판에는 하나님의 일하심이 있습니다. “고난 당하기 전에는 내가 그릇 행하였더니 이제는 주의 말씀을 지키나이다”, “고난 당한 것이 내게 유익이라 이로 말미암아 내가 주의 율례들을 배우게 되었나이다”(시 119:67, 71). 욥 역시 “내가 가는 길을 그가 아시나니 그가 나를 단련하신 후에는 내가 순금 같이 되어 나오리라”(욥 23:10)고 고백했습니다. 고난은 면제가 아니라 우리를 키워내는 훈련입니다. 본회퍼의 말처럼 고난은 그리스도를 따른다는 증거입니다.

(3) 상속자에게는 영광이 있다

고난이 끝이 아닙니다. “생각하건대 현재의 고난은 장차 우리에게 나타날 영광과 비교할 수 없도다”(롬 8:18). 장차 나타날 영광은 하나님 자신이며, 그 광채는 눈물을 닦아주고 모든 것을 바로잡습니다. C.S. 루이스는 예비 된 것들이 너무 찬란하여 깊은 고통도 짧은 낮잠처럼 느껴질 것이라 했습니다.

바울도 “우리가 잠시 받는 환난의 경한 것이 지극히 크고 영원한 영광의 중한 것을 우리에게 이루게 함이니 우리가 주목하는 것은 보이는 것이 아니요 보이지 않는 것이니 보이는 것은 잠깐이요 보이지 않는 것은 영원함이라”(고후 4:17~18)고 말합니다. 고난만 보지 말고 더 큰 영광을 보라는 것입니다. 스데반이 죽음 앞에서 하나님의 영광을 보고 원수를 용서했듯(행 7:60), 아바의 자녀들은 영광을 향한 믿음과 뚝심으로 고난을 이겨내야 합니다.

우리는 헤아릴 수 없는 권능과 사랑을 가진 아바의 상속자입니다. 나타날 영광을 보며 세상에 지지 말고 의연하게 살아 가십시다.

Romans 44: Children of Abba 2 (Rom 8:17–18)

1. Abba Father

We begin with a passage from the prayer in Augustine’s Confessions: “Most high, utterly good, utterly powerful, most omnipotent, most merciful and most just, deeply hidden yet most intimately present, perfection of beauty and strength, stable and yet incomprehensible, changeless and yet changing all things, never new, never old, making all things new and yet bringing age upon the proud while they know it not; always in action, always at rest, gathering all things to Yourself and yet lacking nothing, supporting, filling, and protecting, creating, nourishing, and bringing to maturity, seeking and yet possessing all things. You love without burning, You are jealous without anxiety, You repent without the pain of regret (Gen 6:6), You are angry and yet remain serene… My God, my Life, my holy Sweetness, what have I said in these words? What can anyone say when he speaks of You?” (Confessions, Book 1, Chapter 4).

This is an exclamation of wonder toward the great God who cannot be fully contained in words. In Pauline terms, it is an expression of the deepest gratitude that such a majestic and great God has become our ‘Abba, Father.’

The life of a believer is a life of seeking God, knowing Him more deeply as time passes, longing for Him, and finding rest within Him. Our status is not insignificant. God is not just a father, but an ‘Abba’ who opens His arms to embrace us. The reason suffering believers have cried out so earnestly to the ‘Father’ is that they found comfort in the fact that the most high, loving, and righteous God is indeed their Father. Let us never lose sight of the fact that we are children of Abba.

2. Children of Abba

Paul reveals three privileges enjoyed by the children of Abba through three declarations in verses 17 and 18: First, the child of Abba is an heir appointed by God. Second, there is suffering for the heir. Third, there is glory for the heir, and that glory is greater than the suffering.

(1) The Child of Abba is God’s Heir

“Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (Rom 8:17a). Since a believer is not a slave but a child, it is natural to become an heir. Inheritance is about receiving a legacy—not money or real estate, but God Himself. The Psalmist confessed,

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Ps 73:26). There is no legacy greater than God. Furthermore, being ‘co-heirs with Christ’ means we jointly inherit the same legacy as the biological Son: the heavenly throne, the glory of the resurrection, and dominion over all creation. Believers must live honorably, remembering this noble status as God’s heirs.

(2) There is Suffering for the Heir

Paul’s second declaration is about suffering: “…if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory” (Rom 8:17b). No child of Abba likes suffering, but the Bible does not deny its existence.

Just as the Lord reached the glory of the resurrection through the suffering of the cross, God is at work in the midst of our hardships. “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word,” and “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees” (Ps 119:67, 71). Job also confessed, “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold” (Job 23:10). Suffering is not an exemption; it is the training that matures the children of Abba. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, suffering is evidence that we are following Christ.

(3) There is Glory for the Heir

Suffering is not the end. “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Rom 8:18). The glory to be revealed is God Himself. This radiance will set all wrongs right and wipe away every tear.

C.S. Lewis noted that the things God has prepared for us are so radiant that our deepest pains will feel like a short nap in retrospect. Paul likewise says, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Cor 4:17–18).

We are challenged to look at the glory that is greater than the pain. Just as Stephen saw the glory of God while being stoned (Acts 7:60), children of Abba must hold onto the promised ‘glory’ with faith and grit.

We are heirs of Abba, possessing immeasurable power and love. Looking toward the glory to be revealed, let us live with dignity, neither collapsing under suffering nor being defeated by the world. Amen.
