로마서26:은혜에 물들기를(롬5:1~2)

1.물들다.

오늘은 “은혜에 물들기를”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 함께 나누겠습니다. 은혜에 물든다는 것은 저의 바람이라기보다도, 하나님께서 저와 여러분에게 바라시는 굉장히 큰 소원이라고 할 수 있는 삶의 상태입니다. 은혜에 물든다는 것은 우리의 삶이 은혜로 가득 차 있다는 것을 의미하며, 이는 믿음으로 의롭게 된 자가 누리는 축복 가운데 하나입니다.

바울은 신자들이 누리는 세 가지 복이 있다고 말했습니다. 첫 번째는 하나님과의 평화입니다. 세상은 하나님께 불만투성이거나 저항하지만, 믿음으로 의롭게 된 자는 하나님과 평화의 관계를 누릴 수 있습니다. 두 번째가 오늘 주제인 은혜에 들어가는 아름다운 삶을 가질 수 있게 되었다는 것입니다. 그리고 세 번째는 영광의 소망, 즉 소망이 없는 시대에 소망을 누리며 살아갈 수 있는 복을 허락하셨다는 것입니다.

우리는 믿음으로서 있는 이 은혜에 들어감을 얻게 되었습니다. 이를 이해하려면 로마서 1장부터 4장이 이해되어야 합니다. 이전까지 사람들은 진노의 세계, 즉 죄 가운데 있고 모함하는 세상 속에 있었습니다. 그러나 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 믿음을 가진 우리는 다른 세계로 이동했습니다. 진노의 세계에서 은혜의 세계, 곧 예수의 세계로 이동한 것입니다.

신자가 되었다는 것은 단순히 교회에 나온다는 것을 넘어, 삶의 근본적인 이동이 일어났다는 것을 의미합니다. 예수의 세계는 싸움과 투쟁의 세계가 아니라 평화의 세계입니다. 절망으로 신음하는 세계가 아니라 소망의 세계입니다. 하나님은 우리가 이러한 평화의 세계, 은혜의 세계, 소망의 세계를 누리며 살아가기를 원하십니다.

이러한 놀라운 일이 어떻게 일어났을까요? 이는 은혜에 의해서, 즉 하나님이 주도권을 가지신 하나님의 주심에 의해서 일어났습니다. 사람들은 자신의 공로, 자격, 조건을 가지고 구원을 얻으려 하지만, 하나님은 우리의 자격과 조건을 묻지 않으십니다. 아니, 물어도 소용이 없지요. 오로지 당신의 의지와 자비와 사랑을 가지고 새로운 세계, 은혜의 세계로 우리를 들어오게 만드셨습니다.

하나님이 주신 은혜 때문에 우리는 아픈 과거를 끊어낼 수 있습니다. 하나님은 은혜를 통하여 우리의 현재를 새롭게 만들어 주시고, 우리의 미래에 소망을 준비해 주십니다. 은혜가 만든 삶은 굉장히 아름답고 넉넉하며, 그 안에 평화가 있습니다. 은혜는 하나님을 향한 간절한 믿음이 샘솟듯 일어나게 하며, 삶의 모든 아픔과 고난을 견뎌 나가는 견딤이라는 아름다운 힘을 허락합니다.

기독교는 은혜의 종교입니다. 은혜를 모르면 우리는 신앙의 아름다운 삶으로 들어갈 수 없습니다. 그러나 은혜는 아는 것으로 그치면 안 됩니다. 오늘 설교의 제목처럼, 우리의 존재 자체가, 우리의 삶 자체가 하나님의 은혜에 완전히 물들어 있어야 합니다.

은혜가 물들어야 은혜 속에서 살아갈 수가 있습니다. 은혜를 아는 것으로만 그치면 오히려 그 지식을 가지고 타인을 판단하고 공격하는 데 사용하게 됩니다. 은혜는 그런 것이 아니라, 내 자신이 은혜 속에 물들고, 촉촉이 젖혀져야 참 힘든 세상에서 하나님의 은혜로운 사람답게 넉넉함과 사랑과 견딤을 가지고 헤쳐 나갈 수 있습니다.

물든다는 것은 겉만 색칠하는 것이 아닙니다. 겉만 칠하면 금방 지워집니다. 물든다는 것은 속까지 깊게 스며들어 쉽게 없어지지 않는 상태를 말합니다. 한자로 물들 염(染) 자는 물 수(水), 아홉 구(九), 나무 목(木)이 합쳐진 단어인데, 이는 염료를 물에 담가 아홉 번을 집어넣었다 빼는 무수한 반복과 수고가 있을 때 비로소 완전한 물들임이 나타난다는 것을 보여줍니다.

물드는 것은 한 번에 일어나지 않습니다. 오랜 시간 함께할 때 저절로 스며들어 물이 들게 되는 것입니다. 모세가 시내산에서 40일 동안 밤낮으로 하나님과 대면하고 내려왔을 때, 이스라엘 백성들은 모세 얼굴에서 나오는 환한 광채 때문에 그를 쳐다보지 못했습니다. 이 광채는 40일 동안 하나님의 영광의 빛 앞에 있다가 모세에게 스며들어 물들어 버린 결과였을 것입니다. 은혜에 물든다는 것은 이처럼 하나님의 은총 속에 거하여 그것이 내 안에 스며들 때, 비로소 하나님의 영광의 광채가 내 안에서 퍼지는 것을 의미합니다.

2. 은혜에 대하여

(1) 은혜는 느낌이 아니라 나라다.

우리는 은혜가 무엇인지 더 깊이 잘 알아야 합니다. 은혜는 하나님이 값없이 베푸신 선물인 것이 맞습니다. 그러나 은혜는 그 베푸심의 결과 우리가 새로운 나라, 새로운 영역으로 들어간 상태가 되었다는 것을 포함합니다. 나의 느낌과 감정이 은혜가 아니라, 하나님의 주도적인 열심으로 새로운 통치 세계로 옮겨 놓은 상태, 그것이 은혜입니다.

성경이 말하는 은혜는 나의 느낌이나 감정으로 정의해서는 안 됩니다. 내 마음이 뿌듯해야 은혜 받았다고 생각하거나, 기도 응답이 없으면 은혜가 없다고 생각하는 것은 은혜를 내 감정으로 해석하는 것입니다. 그러나 은혜는 이미 우리가 새로운 나라로 들어가 있는 상태입니다. 5장 2절을 다시 보면, “믿음으로서 있는 이 은혜에 들어감을 얻었으며”라고 했습니다. 은혜는 내 느낌보다 더 견고한 현실로 하나님이 이동시킨 상태입니다.

골로새서 1장 13절 말씀처럼, 하나님은 우리를 흑암의 권세에서 건져내어 그의 사랑의 아들의 나라로 옮기셨습니다. 은혜는 바로 이 놀라운 현실입니다. 우리의 신분과 삶이 바뀌어지는 일이 은혜를 통해 일어난 것입니다. 이 나라의 이름은 은혜의 나라입니다. 이 나라는 하나님이 통치하시는 나라요, 하나님의 선물이 넘치는 나라입니다. 그 선물은 사랑, 믿음, 용서, 관용과 같이 세상에서 중요하지 않다고 여기는 것들이지만, 이 은혜의 나라에서는 가장 중요한 선물입니다. 하나님의 나라는 실패로 끝나지 않는 나라이며, 무엇보다도 하나님이 편들어 주시는 나라입니다.

은혜는 돈을 많이 벌거나 성공하는 정도의 차원이 아닙니다. 흑암의 권세에서 건져내어 하나님의 아들의 나라로 옮겨 가신 그 엄청난 사건, 그것이 바로 은혜입니다. 은혜는 우리의 느낌과 감정에 따라 왔다 갔다 하는 수준 낮은 상태가 아니라, 예수 그리스도의 십자가 공로와 부활하심으로 우리에게 현실로 나타난 포기할 수 없는 견고한 사실입니다. 우리는 은혜 나라 안에 견고하게 들어간 하나님의 사람들입니다. 우리의 감정으로 하나님의 은혜의 놀라움을 의심해서는 안 됩니다.

우리가 떠나온 진노의 나라는 인과응보가 철저히 지배하고, 자격과 증명이 지배하는 나라였습니다. 실수하면 가혹한 벌이 있고, 불안과 두려움이 엄습하는 곳입니다. 그러나 은혜의 나라는 죽음에서 생명으로, 진노에서 사랑으로, 흑암에서 빛으로 옮겨진 실제하는 구원의 현실입니다.

은혜는 아는 것으로 안 되며, 내 몸과 정신과 영혼에 은혜가 스며들어 하나님의 통치가 내 안에 물들어 있어야 합니다. 이 하나님의 은총의 손길이 언제나 나와 함께하고 있다는 것이 내 존재 자체에 물들어 있어야 합니다.

(2) 은혜에 머물라

은혜는 선물이지만, 은혜에 물들기 위해서는 우리의 수고가 필요합니다. 아홉 번 염료를 담가 빼는 수고처럼, 이 수고가 있을 때 은혜에 물들어 삶의 존재 전체가 스며드는 것입니다. 이 수고가 없으면 은혜는 아는데 나오는 것은 판단, 시비, 정죄일 뿐, 사랑은 나오지 않습니다.

은혜에 물들기 위해 우리가 꼭 해야 할 세 가지 수고가 있습니다.

첫째, 겸손의 수고: 하나님 앞에 나아가 매 순간 나의 빈손을 내미는 것입니다. “주님, 저의 힘으로는 안 됩니다. 오늘 하루도 은혜를 베풀어 주십시오” 하며 겸손히 하나님의 은총을 구해야 합니다. 자만하거나 자신해서는 은혜에 물들 수 없습니다. 야고보서 4장 6절은 “하나님은 교만한 자를 물리치시고 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 주신다”고 했습니다. 겸손은 은혜를 끌어당기는 최고의 길입니다.

둘째, 말씀의 수고: 하나님의 말씀 앞에 늘 진지하게 서 가는 수고입니다. 끊임없이 말씀 앞에 서고 그 말씀에 반응하는 사람에게 은혜가 임할 수밖에 없습니다. 말씀 없이는 은혜에 젖어들 수가 없습니다. “주님 말씀 보니 제가 잘못한 게 맞네요,” “이렇게 살아야 되겠네요” 할 때, 은혜의 단비가 내 안에 들어와 하나님의 통치 속에서 살게 되는 것입니다.

세째, 나눔의 수고: 은혜에 깊게 물들어가기 위해서는 이 지난한 나눔의 수고가 필요합니다. 우리는 쌓아둠이 본성이지만, 은혜에 물들기 위해서는 나눔이 있어야 합니다. 하나님이 당신의 아들 예수 그리스도를 보내 사랑을 나누어 주셨듯이, 우리도 받은 사랑의 은총을 나누어야 합니다. 고인 물은 썩듯이, 은혜도 마찬가지입니다. 은혜를 쌓아두면 썩게 마련입니다. 은혜는 흘려보내야 하고, 나눌수록 풍성해집니다.

사도행전 20장 35절처럼 “주는 것이 받는 것보다 복이 있다”는 하나님의 원칙을 따라 나눔의 삶이 일어날 때, 은혜에 물 들어가는 삶이 내 안에서 이루어집니다. 우리에게는 용서를 받았기에 용서가 있고, 사랑을 받았다면 넉넉한 사랑이 있습니다. 나눌 것이 없는 것이 아닙니다.

우리는 은혜 세계에 들어와 있습니다. 은혜 주심은 하나님이지만, 은혜에 물드는 것은 은혜받은 자가 해야 하는 책임이고 소명입니다.

3. 은혜에 물든 삶을 살자

독일 시인 릴케는 가을에 대한 시에서 “나무잎이 진다. 잎이 진다. 우리는 모두 떨어진다. 이 손도 떨어진다. 다른 것을 보라. 조락은 어느 것에나 있다. 그러나 이 조락을 한없이 부드럽게 두 손으로 받쳐 주는 어느 한 분이 있다”고 했습니다.

세상은 실패하고 무너지면 끝났다고 하지만, 복음은 “아니야, 회복할 수 있어, 일어날 수 있어”라고 말합니다. 상처가 클수록 은혜는 더 깊습니다. 흉터가 클수록 하나님의 은혜는 더 진한 향기를 뿜어낼 수 있습니다.

민수기의 말씀처럼 “여호와는 그의 얼굴을 네게 비추사 은혜 베푸시기를 원하며 여호와는 그 얼굴을 네게로 향하여 두사 평강 주시기를 원하노라”는 하나님의 열심이 우리를 향해 선포하는 말씀입니다.

삶의 상황으로 하나님의 은총의 빛을 외면하지 마십시다. 비추시는 영광의 빛으로 은혜에 물드는 복된 삶이 이루어 지기를 바랍니다. 

Romans 26: To Be Stained by Grace (Romans 5:1-2)

1. To Be Stained

Today, I would like to share a message with you titled “To Be Stained by Grace.” Being stained by grace is not so much my own wish, but rather a state of life that God greatly desires for you and me. To be stained by grace means that our lives are filled with grace, and this is one of the blessings enjoyed by those who have been justified by faith.

Paul spoke of three blessings that believers enjoy. The first is peace with God. While the world is full of complaints against or resistance to God, those justified by faith can enjoy a relationship of peace with God. The second, which is our topic today, is that we have been given the beautiful life of entering into grace. And the third is the hope of glory, meaning that in an age without hope, we have been granted the blessing of living with hope.

We have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. To understand this, we must first understand Romans chapters 1 through 4. Until this point, people were in a world of wrath, that is, a world of sin and slander. However, we who have faith through Jesus Christ have moved to a different world. We have moved from the world of wrath to the world of grace, that is, the world of Jesus.

Becoming a believer means more than simply coming to church; it signifies that a fundamental shift has occurred in one’s life. The world of Jesus is not a world of fighting and struggle, but a world of peace. It is not a world groaning in despair, but a world of hope. God wants us to live and enjoy this world of peace, this world of grace, this world of hope.

How did such an amazing thing happen? It happened by grace, that is, by God’s gift, in which God took the initiative. People try to obtain salvation through their own merits, qualifications, and conditions, but God does not ask about our qualifications or conditions. No, it would be useless even if He asked. Solely by His own will, mercy, and love, He has made us enter a new world, the world of grace.

Because of the grace God has given, we can cut off our painful past. Through grace, God makes our present new and prepares hope for our future. A life created by grace is exceedingly beautiful and abundant, and there is peace within it. Grace causes an earnest faith toward God to spring up like a fountain and grants us the beautiful strength of endurance to persevere through all the pains and hardships of life.

Christianity is a religion of grace. If we do not know grace, we cannot enter into the beautiful life of faith. However, grace should not end with just knowing it. As the title of today’s sermon suggests, our very existence, our very lives, must be completely stained by God’s grace.

We must be stained by grace to be able to live within grace. If we only know about grace, we may end up using that knowledge to judge and attack others. Grace is not like that. Rather, when I myself am stained by grace, soaked in it, I can navigate this truly difficult world as a gracious person of God with abundance, love, and endurance.

Being stained is not just painting the surface. If you only paint the surface, it wears off quickly. Being stained refers to a state where something has seeped deep into the core and does not easily disappear. The Chinese character for ‘stain’ or ‘dye,’ 染 (yeom), is a combination of the characters for water (水), nine (九), and wood (木). This illustrates that a perfect stain is achieved only through the immense repetition and labor of dipping something into dye water nine times.

Being stained does not happen all at once. It happens when you spend a long time together, and it seeps in naturally. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai after meeting with God face to face for forty days and nights, the people of Israel could not look at him because of the radiant glow from his face. This radiance was likely the result of being in the presence of God’s glorious light for forty days, which seeped into and stained Moses. To be stained by grace, in this way, means that when we abide in God’s grace and it seeps into us, the glory of God’s radiance begins to shine from within us.

2. About Grace

(1) Grace is not a feeling, but a kingdom.

We need to understand more deeply what grace is. It is true that grace is a gift given freely by God. However, grace also includes the fact that, as a result of that gift, we have entered a new kingdom, a new realm. Grace is not my feeling or emotion, but the state of being moved into a new world of dominion by God’s sovereign passion.

The grace that the Bible speaks of should not be defined by my feelings or emotions. To think that I have received grace only when my heart feels gratified, or to think that there is no grace when my prayers are not answered, is to interpret grace through my emotions. However, grace is the state of already having entered a new kingdom. If we look at chapter 5, verse 2 again, it says, “through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.” Grace is a state into which God has moved us, a reality more solid than my feelings.

As it says in Colossians 1:13, God has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves. Grace is this amazing reality. The changing of our status and our lives has occurred through grace. The name of this kingdom is the kingdom of grace. This is a kingdom ruled by God, a kingdom overflowing with God’s gifts. These gifts are things the world may not consider important, like love, faith, forgiveness, and tolerance, but in this kingdom of grace, they are the most important gifts. The kingdom of God is a kingdom that does not end in failure, and above all, it is a kingdom that God is on our side in.

Grace is not on the level of making a lot of money or achieving success. The tremendous event of being rescued from the dominion of darkness and transferred to the kingdom of God’s Son—that is grace. Grace is not a low-level state that fluctuates with our feelings and emotions, but an undeniable, solid fact that has become our reality through the merit of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. We are God’s people who have firmly entered the kingdom of grace. We must not doubt the wonder of God’s grace based on our emotions.

The kingdom of wrath that we have left behind was a kingdom thoroughly governed by cause and effect, a kingdom governed by qualifications and proofs. It is a place where mistakes are met with harsh punishment, and where anxiety and fear hold sway. But the kingdom of grace is the reality of salvation, a move from death to life, from wrath to love, from darkness to light.

Knowing grace is not enough; grace must seep into my body, mind, and soul, and God’s reign must be stained within me. The touch of God’s grace, that it is always with me, must be stained into my very being.

(2) Remain in Grace

Although grace is a gift, our effort is required to be stained by grace. Just like the labor of dipping something in dye nine times, it is when we make this effort that we become stained by grace, and it seeps into our entire being. Without this effort, we may know about grace, but what comes out is judgment, arguments, and condemnation, not love.

There are three efforts we must make to be stained by grace.

First, the effort of humility: This is to go before God and present my empty hands every moment. We must humbly ask for God’s grace, saying, “Lord, I can’t do it with my own strength. Please grant me grace for this day as well.” We cannot be stained by grace if we are arrogant or self-confident. James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Humility is the best way to attract grace.

Second, the effort of the Word: This is the effort of always standing earnestly before the Word of God. Grace inevitably comes to the person who constantly stands before the Word and responds to it. Without the Word, we cannot be soaked in grace. When we say, “Lord, seeing your Word, I see that I was wrong,” or “I must live this way,” the rain of grace enters within me, and I come to live under God’s reign.

Third, the effort of sharing: To be deeply stained by grace, this arduous effort of sharing is necessary. Our nature is to accumulate, but to be stained by grace, there must be sharing. Just as God shared His love by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, we too must share the grace of love we have received. Just as stagnant water rots, so does grace. If we hoard grace, it is bound to rot. Grace must be allowed to flow; it becomes more abundant the more we share it.

Following God’s principle in Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” when a life of sharing takes place, a life stained by grace is formed within me. Because we have been forgiven, we have forgiveness. If we have received love, we have abundant love. It is not that we have nothing to share.

We have entered the world of grace. The giving of grace is from God, but being stained by grace is the responsibility and calling of those who have received it.

3. Let’s Live a Life Stained by Grace

The German poet Rilke, in a poem about autumn, wrote: “The leaves are falling, falling as if from far off… We are all falling. This hand’s falling too. And look at the others: it is in all. And yet there is One, who holds this falling endlessly gently in His hands.”

The world says that when you fail and collapse, it’s over. But the Gospel says, “No, you can recover, you can get up.” The deeper the wound, the deeper the grace. The larger the scar, the richer the fragrance of God’s grace can be.

As the word in Numbers says, “The LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” This is the declaration of God’s passion for us.

Let us not turn away from the light of God’s grace because of our life’s circumstances. I pray that you will achieve a blessed life, stained by grace in the shining light of His glory.
