모두 진정하라(출14:1~14).

1. 상황
출애굽기 25번째 시간입니다. 제목은 ‘모두 진정하라’입니다. 14절에서 모세가 한 말입니다. ‘가만히 있으라’ ‘진정하라’. 사람들이 흥분해 있기에 하게 된 말입니다. 누가 흥분하고 있습니까? 바로. 상당히 흥분해 있습니다. 바로의 군대도 흥분해 있습니다. 그리고 출애굽한 이스라엘 사람들, 대부분이 흥분 상태에 있습니다.

바로가 흥분하는 것은 탈출한 노예들에게 복수할 기회가 생겨서 흥분합니다. 바로는 그러한 상황이 하나님이 만들어 놓은 덫이라는 생각은 하지 못하고, 이스라엘 사람들이 독 안에 든 쥐처럼 홍해 앞에 있다는 보고를 받고 독이 바싹 오른 사막의 독사 마냥 추격하기 시작합니다. 추격하는 군인들은 피 냄새를 맡은 굶주린 늑대 마냥 흥분하면서 전차를 몰고 갔을 것입니다. 그리고 마지막 흥분자들은 바로의 추격 소식을 듣고 두려움에 사로잡힌 탈출 노예들, 이스라엘 사람들입니다. 이렇게 오늘 본문은 ‘흥분한 사람들’로 꽉 차 있습니다.

우리도 다 흥분해 봤지만, 흥분하면 어떻게 됩니까? 제일 먼저, 감정이 격해집니다. 감정이 격해지면 판단에 문제가 생깁니다. 봐야 할 것, 생각해야 할 것 놓치게 됩니다. 말도 막 나갑니다. 과격해 집니다. 실수하게 되고, 관계에도 문제가 생깁니다. 폭발한 흥분, 수습하는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 오래 걸리고, 힘듭니다. 흥분하는 사람이 신자라면 흥분은 하나님과의 관계마저 차단시켜 버립니다. 아담과 하와도 하나님처럼 된다는 말에 흥분해서 무너집니다. 다윗도 밧세바를 보고 흥분해서 무너집니다.

흥분하면 여러모로 무너집니다. 유혹에 무너지고, 영성도 무너지고, 관계도 무너집니다. 설렘과 활력을 주는 좋은 흥분도 있지만,우리를 무너뜨리는 흥분은 조심해야 합니다. 흥분하고 있는 이스라엘 사람들 보십시오. 모세가 그동안 얼마나 애를 썼고, 하나님이 자신들을 위해서 어떤 기막힌 일을 했는지는 다 잊어 버리고, ‘여기서 죽느니 애굽으로 돌아가 다시 노예생활 하겠다. 당신 때문에 우리가 이 모양 이 꼴이 됐다’. 어떻게 이런 말을 할 수 있습니까? 흥분이 만들어낸 비극이고, 예의 없음입니다. 거듭 말하지만, 흥분은 위험합니다. 조심해야 합니다.

2. 모세의 복음
이런 괘씸한 말을 듣고 모세가 어땠을까요? 모세도 흥분할만 합니다. 하지만 분위기를 보면 흥분하지 않은 것이 분명합니다. 흥분이 아니라 ‘너무’ 차분합니다. 이스라엘 사람들이 신경질 날 정도로 차분합니다. 흥분하면 같이 흥분해야 되는데 그렇지 않습니다.모세는 흥분의 위험을 겪어 본 사람입니다. 이집트 왕자로 있을 때 흥분합니다. 자기 동족이 맞는 것을 보고 격앙한 나머지 감독관을 때려 죽입니다. 이 한번의 흥분으로 모세 인생이 바뀝니다. 왕자에서 살인자가 되어 도망자로 살게 됩니다. 흥분하면 좋을 게 없다는 것을 체득한 사람이 모세입니다.

그래서 그랬는지는 모르지만 모세는 같이 흥분하지 않습니다. 흥분하는 대신 흥분한 이스라엘 백성들을 가라 앉힙니다. 모두 진정하라. 13절. 14절이 흥분한 사람들을 향한 모세의 마음다한 조언이고, 설교고, 부탁이며, 그들을 향한 복음입니다. 흥분한 사람들에게 모세가 말합니다. “흥분하지 말고 ‘모두 진정하세요’. ‘하나님이 싸워주시니, 두려워하지 말고, 가만히 서서, 하나님의 구원을 보십시오. 그러면 됩니다” 혼란과 위기의 순간에, 이럴 수 있다는 게 놀랍습니다. 그리고 부럽습니다. 잔잔한 대양의 호수 같은 여유. 닮고 싶습니다.

‘모두 진정하십시오’. 묵직합니다. 우리에게 하고 있는 말 같습니다. 진정은 누를 鎭, 고요할 靜입니다. 격앙된 것들을 눌러 가라앉히는 것입니다. 원문에는 침묵하라. 잠잠하라는 뜻으로 쓰였습니다. 흥분한 사람이 진정하는 거, 쉽지 않습니다. 그럼에도 모세는 진정하라 말하고, 진정할 수 있는 조건 세 가지를 알려 줍니다. 세 조건이 뭡니까? ① 두려워하지 말라. ② 견고하게 서라. ③ 하나님의 구원을 확인하라'(경험하라). 이 세 가지가 위기의 때에 흥분과 두려움을 막아 주는 ‘진정의 조건’들입니다.

한 마디로 하면 하나님에 대한 ‘믿음’을 가지라는 것입니다. ① 하나님이 함께 하니 두려워하지 말라. 열 재앙때 보지 않았느냐? 유월의 밤을 생각해 봐라. 구름 기둥 불기둥이 지금 너희 앞에 있다. ② 이런 하나님이 함께 한다. 도망갈 생각만 하지 말고, 공격할 사람처럼 스크럼짜고 견고하게 서 있어라. ③ 하나님이 전사로서 싸우시는 모습을 봐라. 

생각해 보십시오. 최강의 군대 바로가 쫓아오고, 홍해가 가로 막혀 있는데 무슨 수로 이 거대한 벽을 그들이 깰 수 있습니까? 바로도, 홍해도 그들이 깰 수 있는 벽이 아닙니다. 마찬가지로, 우리 인생 앞에 놓인 바로, 홍해도 우리가 깰 수 없습니다. 어떻게 해야 합니까? 홍해라는 거대한 벽이 가로 막을 때 마다 우리도 당황하고 흥분합니다.

그리고 그때마다 튀어 나오는 질문, 하나님, 어떻게 해야 합니까? ‘어떻게’ 라는 질문을 수 없이 합니다. 하지만 홍해 앞에서는 질문을 바꿔야 합니다.‘어떻게’ 라는 질문은 내가 할 만할 때 하는 질문이지, 할 수 있는게 없을 때는 ‘어떻게’를 물어도 답이 나오기 힘듭니다. 진퇴양난, 할 수 있는 게 없을 때 신자는 ‘어떻게’가 아니라 ‘왜’를 먼저 물어야 합니다. 그래야 답이 나오고, 길이 보입니다. 하나님 ‘왜’ 이런 일을 주십니까? 무슨 뜻이 있습니까? ‘왜’라고 묻기 시작할 때 놀랍게도 그 일은 ‘하나님의 일’이 되고, ‘하나님의 영역’으로 변합니다.

내가 할 일은 두려움을 멈추고 가만히 서서 하나님이 싸우시는 것을 마음 가라 앉히고 보면 됩니다. 믿음을 가진 자가 가져야 하는 모습입니다. 물론 ‘왜’라는 물음과 하나님의 일하심 사이에는 많은 일들이 있습니다. 힘들 수도 있고, 성실한 묵상과 기도가 필요합니다. 하지만 ‘왜’라는 물음을 깊게 하다 보면 하나님의 위로와 진정하심이 내 안에 밀려 들어오는 순간이 있습니다. 이 순간을 우리가 경험하고, 포착해야 합니다.힘들 때 질문을 ‘어떻게’에서‘왜’로 바꿔 보세요. 새로운 신앙의 세계가 열립니다.

3. 믿음, 삶의 지평 넓히기
롱펠로우의 시 하나 읽어 드리겠습니다. ‘비오는 날’이라는 제목을 가진 시의 일부분입니다.
진정하라, 슬픈 가슴이여! 투덜거리지 말라.
구름 뒤엔 아직도 태양이 빛나고 있으니
너의 운명도 모든 사람의 운명과 다름없고
어느 삶에든 얼마만큼 비는 내리는 법
어느 정도는 어둡고 쓸쓸한 날들이 있는 법.

시인도 진정하라고 말합니다. 모세의 메시지를 읽었던 것 같습니다. ‘인생은 그런 것, 비 내리고, 쓸쓸한 순간 누구에게나 있으니 그런 순간이 와도 너무 슬퍼하고, 힘들어 하지 말라. 진정하라. 비오고 구름 낄지 모르지만 그 뒤에는 환한 태양이 빛나고 있다’.

관건은 구름 뒤에 있는 태양을 보는가, 못보는가 입니다. 보면 좋겠습니다. 구름 위에 있는 태양을 보는 게 믿음입니다. 믿음이 태양을 보게하고, 믿음이 삶의 지평을 넓혀 줍니다. 삶의 지평이 넓어질 때 남들이 보지 못하는 것, 생각 할 수 없는 것을 볼 수 있고, 생각 할 수 있기에 그렇지 못한 사람들 보다 ‘진정’할 수 있는 힘이 클 수 밖에 없습니다.

인생의 쓸쓸함과 거대한 홍해 앞에서 무너지지 않기 위해서는 ‘믿음’이라는 삶의 지평이 넓어져야 합니다.

다윗이 고백합니다. ‘내가 사망의 음침한 골짜기로 다닐지라도 해를 두려워하지 않을 것은 주께서 나와 함께 하심이라. 주의 지팡이와 막대기가 나를 안위하시나이다'(시23:4) 바울도 고백합니다. ‘누가 우리를 그리스도의 사랑에서 끊으리요 환난이나 곤고나 박해나 기근이나 적신이나 위험이나 칼이랴…아니요(No,ESV) 이 모든 일에 우리를 사랑하신 이로 말미암아 우리가 넉넉히 이기느니라. 내가 확신하노니 사망이나 생명이나 천사들이나 권세자들이나 현재 일이나 장래 일이나 높음이나 깊음이나 다른 어떤 피조물이라도 우리를 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없으리라(롬8:35, 37-39)

생각 없이 문구가 좋아서 암송하는 사람도 많지만 아무나 할 수 있는 고백은 아닙니다. 이런 고백은 믿음의 지평(시야)을 가진 사람이 할 수 있고, 믿음을 가지고 고백할 때 ‘진정’, ‘안정’, ‘평안’이라고 하는 어디서도 받기 힘든 귀한 선물을 받게 됩니다.

사람은 자신이 가진 지평 만큼만 살 수 있습니다. 내가 이해하고, 바라보는 지평이 내 삶이 되는 것입니다. 산 정상에 오르면 넓게 보이듯이, 지평이 넓을수록 더 멀리, 더 깊게, 더 높이 볼 수 있기에 시야와 지평을 넓혀야 합니다. 세상과 삶은 단순하지 않습니다. 눈에 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것이 신비할 정도로 얽혀 있습니다. 하나의 시각으로만 보면 안됩니다. 실패도 성공일 수 있고, 성공도 실패일 수 있습니다. 건강이 불행일 수 있고, 병듬이 은혜 일 수 있습니다. 믿음의 지평을 가지고 넓게 보면 일어나는 일 하나하나에 일희일비 하지 않고 견고할 수 있습니다.

영국 철학자 러셀의 말입니다. ‘인생의 폭이 협소할수록 우연한 사건이 우리 인생을 마음대로 주무를 수 있게된다‘(행복의 정복, 버트란트 러셀) 맞는 말입니다. 삶을 보는 눈이 좁으면사건에 끌려다닙니다. 사건이 마음대로 주물러 버립니다. 삶을 이해하고, 바라보는 시야, 지평이 넓어야 휘둘리지 않게 됩니다. 두려워하지 말고, 가만히 서서 하나님의 구원을 볼 수 있는 사람은 믿음의 지평이 있는 사람입니다. 돈보다, 건강보다, 성공보다 먼저 확보해야 됩니다. 진퇴양난의 삶에서 진정할 수 있는가? 진정할 수 있습니다.’모두 진정하라’는 모세의 말은 빈 말이 아닙니다.

공포가 와서 문을 두드렸다고 합니다. 그래서 믿음이 나갔는데, 나가보니 아무도 없더라는 것입니다. 공포가 믿음을 보고 도망가 버린 것입니다.

삶의 지평, 믿음의 지평을 넓힐 수 있는 좋은 계절이 왔습니다. 흥분과 불안을 가라 앉히는 은혜가 여러분과 여러분의 가정에 있기를 바라겠습니다. 바로가 쫒아오고, 홍해가 가로 막아도 두려워하지 말라 하십니다. 침착하고 견고하게 서라 하십니다. 하나님이 행하시는 구원을 보라 하십니다. 그렇게 하십시다.

Calm down, everyone (Exodus 14:1-14).

1. The situation
It is the 25th hour of Exodus. The title is ‘Let everyone be calm’. In verse 14, Moses says: ‘Be still’ and ‘calm down’. He says this because the people are getting excited. Who’s getting excited, that’s right. He’s quite excited. Pharaoh’s army is excited. And the exodus Israelites, most of them, are in a state of excitement.

Pharaoh is excited because he has a chance to get revenge on his escaped slaves. What Pharaoh doesn’t realize is that the situation is a trap set by God, and when he receives a report that the Israelites are in front of the Red Sea like rats in poison, he begins to give chase like a viper in the desert. The pursuing soldiers must have driven their chariots with excitement, like hungry wolves who smell blood.

And the final group of excited people are the escaped slaves, the Israelites, who are filled with fear when they hear of Pharaoh’s pursuit. So today’s text is full of “excited people.

We’ve all been excited, but what happens when we get excited? First of all, we get emotional. And when we get emotional, we have trouble judging. You miss things you should see, things you should think about. You start talking out of your ass. You get aggressive. Mistakes are made, relationships suffer. Excitement explodes, and it’s not easy to clean up. It takes a long time, it’s hard. If the excitable person is a believer, excitement cuts them off from their relationship with God. Adam and Eve got excited about being like God and fell. David fell apart when he saw Bathsheba.

When we get excited, we break down in many ways. Temptation breaks down, spirituality breaks down, relationships break down. There is good excitement that gives us excitement and energizes us, but we need to be careful of excitement that tears us down. Look at the Israelites with their excitement. Forgetting all the hard work Moses had done and all the wonderful things God had done for them, they said, “I’ll go back to Egypt and be a slave again rather than die here. You’re the reason we’re in this mess. How can you say this? It’s a tragedy created by excitement, and it’s disrespectful. Again, excitement is dangerous. You have to be careful.

2. The Gospel of Moses
What do you think Moses was thinking when he heard this? Moses has every right to be excited, but it’s clear from his mood that he’s not. Not excited, but “too” calm. Calm enough to get on the Israelites’ nerves. If they’re excited, they should be excited, but they’re not.Moses is a man who has seen the dangers of excitement. He gets excited when he’s an Egyptian prince. When he sees one of his own people beaten, he becomes so enraged that he beats his overseer to death. This one moment of excitement changes Moses’ life. He goes from being a prince to a murderer to living as a fugitive. If there’s one person who has learned that getting carried away is never a good thing, it’s Moses.

Maybe that’s why, but Moses doesn’t get excited along with them. Instead of getting excited, he calms the excited Israelites down. Calm down, everyone. Verse 13. Verse 14 is Moses’ heartfelt advice to the excited people, his sermon, his plea, his gospel to them. To the excited people, Moses says. “Don’t get excited, but ‘calm down, all of you’. ‘God is fighting, don’t be afraid, stand still, see God’s salvation, and that’s it.'” In moments of chaos and crisis, it’s amazing that this is possible, and I envy it. The calmness of a lake in the ocean. I want to be like that.

‘Be calm, all of you’. It’s heavy. It seems to be speaking to us. Calm(鎭靜) is 鎭 to press, 靜 to be still. To press down on things that are turbulent, to subside. In the original, it means to be silent. It means to be quiet. It’s not easy for an agitated person to calm down, but Moses says calm down, and he gives three conditions for calm. What are they? Do not be afraid. Stand firm. Confirm (experience) God’s salvation. These are the “conditions of calm” that keep excitement and fear at bay in times of crisis.

In a word, have “faith” in God. Fear not, for God is with you. Recall the night of the Passover, which you saw in the ten plagues. The pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire are now before you. This is the God who is with you. Don’t think of fleeing, but stand firm, scrambling like a man about to attack. See how God fights like a warrior.

Think about it. Pharaoh, the mightiest of armies, is after them, and the Red Sea is in the way, and how can they break through this huge wall? Neither Pharaoh nor the Red Sea is a wall they can break through. In the same way, neither Pharaoh nor the Red Sea in front of us in our lives is a wall we can break through. What should we do? Whenever we are faced with a huge wall, the Red Sea, we too panic and get excited.

And the question that pops up every time is, God, what should I do? We ask the question “How?” over and over again, but in the face of the Red Sea, we have to change the question: “How?” is a question we ask when we have something to do, and when we don’t have anything to do, “How?” is a question we can’t answer. When you’re stuck, when there’s nothing you can do, the believer has to ask ‘why’ first, not ‘how’, and then the answer comes, and the way is seen. God ‘why’ are you giving me this job, what does it mean? When you start asking ‘why’, amazingly, the job becomes ‘God’s work’, it becomes ‘God’s domain’.

All I have to do is stop being afraid, stand still, and watch with a calm heart as God does the fighting. It’s the kind of look a person of faith should have. Of course, there’s a lot that comes between the “why” question and God’s work. It can be hard, and it requires sincere reflection and prayer. But there are moments when I deepen my “why” questions and God’s comfort and soothing presence rushes into me. These are the moments we need to experience and seize.When you’re struggling, shift your question from “how” to “why” and a new world of faith will open up.

3. Faith, expanding your horizons
Let me read you a poem by Longfellow, part of a poem entitled “A Rainy Day.
Calm down, sad heart! Do not grumble.
For behind the clouds the sun still shines.
And your fate is no different from everyone’s.
How much rain falls in every life.
And some dark and lonely days.

The poet also tells us to calm down. I think I read a message from Moses: ‘Life is like that, rainy, lonely moments happen to everyone, so when they do, don’t be too sad, don’t be too hard on yourself. Be calm. It may be raining and cloudy, but there is a bright sun shining behind it’.

The question is, do you see the sun behind the clouds or not? Seeing the sun behind the clouds is faith, and faith makes you see the sun, and faith broadens your horizons, and when your horizons are broadened, you can see things that others cannot see, you can think things that others cannot think, and because you can think, you have more power to ‘calm down’ than those who cannot.

In order not to crumble in the face of life’s loneliness and the great Red Sea, we need to broaden our horizons of ‘faith’.

David confesses, ‘Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no harm, for you are with me. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no harm, for you are with me; your rod and your staff are for my comfort’ (Psalm 23:4).

Paul also confesses: ‘Who shall separate us from the love of Christ, neither tribulation, nor distress, nor persecution, nor famine, nor nakedness, nor peril, nor sword… (No,ESV) For in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:35, 37-39).

This is not a confession that just anyone can make, although many people recite it without thinking because they like the phrase. It is a confession that only someone with a horizon of faith can make, and when we make it with faith, we receive a rare and priceless gift called “calm”, “stability”, and “peace”.

A person can only live up to the horizon they have. The horizons I understand and see become my life. Just as a mountain top looks wider when you reach the top, you need to expand your horizons because the wider your horizons, the further, deeper, and higher you can see. The world and life are not simple; the visible and invisible are mysteriously intertwined. You can’t look at it through a single lens. Failure can be success, and success can be failure. Health can be misfortune, and sickness can be grace. If we take a wide view, with a horizon of faith, we can be steadfast in the face of what happens.

The English philosopher Russell said, “The narrower our view of life, the more we allow chance events to run our lives.” (The Conquest of Happiness, Bertrand Russell) He’s right. If you have a narrow view of life, you’ll be dragged along by events. Events will run your life. Your understanding of life, your outlook, your horizons, must be broad to avoid being swept away. A person who can stand still and see God’s salvation without fear is a person with a horizon of faith. You must have it before money, before health, before success. Is it possible to be calm in a life of turmoil? It is possible to be calm. Moses’ words, “Let everyone be calm,” are not empty words.

It’s said that fear came and knocked at the door, so faith went out, and when he went out, there was no one there; fear had seen faith and fled.

It’s a good season to expand your horizons, your faith horizons. May the grace be upon you and yours to calm your excitement and anxiety. Though Pharaoh pursues you, though the Red Sea stands in your way, do not be afraid. He says to be calm and stand firm. He says, look to the salvation that God is doing, and do it.
