흔들림 속의 견고함 (시 46:1~11)

1. 흔들림의 현실

오늘 본문은 천지가 개벽하는 엄청난 혼란과 ‘흔들림’ 속에서도 무너지지 않고 하나님을 바라보는 한 시인의 고백이자 다짐입니다. 2, 3, 5, 6절에 걸쳐 ‘흔들림’이라는 단어가 계속해서 등장합니다. 땅이 변하고, 불변의 상징인 산이 흔들려 바다에 빠집니다. 이는 삶의 기반이 송두리째 뽑혀 나가는 실존적 위기입니다.

우리가 의지하고 믿었던 것들이 사라질 때 얼마나 두렵고 힘이 듭니까? 도종환 시인의 말처럼 흔들리지 않고 피는 꽃이 어디 있으며, 괴테의 말처럼 인간은 노력할수록 방황하고 흔들리는 존재입니다.

올 한 해, 여러분을 흔든 것은 무엇입니까? 몸의 질병입니까, 경제적 어려움입니까? 아니면 관계의 문제나 신앙의 회의였습니까? 어떤 상황이든 흔들림은 피할 수 없는 현실입니다. 그러나 중요한 것은 흔들림 속에서도 무너지지 않는 것입니다.

2. 견고함: 뿌리와 붙잡힘

(1) 뿌리: 충분히 흔들리며 가자

고정희 시인의 <상한 영혼을 위하여>라는 시에는 우리에게 주는 깊은 울림이 있습니다.

“상한 갈대라도 하늘 아래선 한 계절 넉넉히 흔들리거니 / 뿌리 깊으면야 밑둥 잘리어도 새 순은 돋거니 / 충분히 흔들리자 상한 영혼이여 / 충분히 흔들리며 고통에게로 가자…”

시인은 ‘흔들리지 말자’가 아니라, 피할 수 없다면 ‘충분히 흔들리자’고 합니다. 고통을 정면으로 마주하겠다는 것입니다. “영원한 눈물은 없느니라.” 이 고백 속에 참된 견고함이 있습니다. 견고함이란 흔들림이 없는 상태가 아니라, ‘흔들림 속에서 다시 서는 힘’입니다.

시인은 캄캄한 밤에 ‘마주 잡은 손 하나’가 오고 있다고 고백합니다. 흔들리면서 시인이 발견한 그 손, 바로 ‘하나님’입니다.

(2) 붙잡힘: 내가 아닌 하나님

흔들릴 때 우리에게 필요한 것은 내가 스스로 강해지는 ‘강해짐’이 아니라, 하나님께 ‘붙잡힘’입니다. 내가 강한 것보다 하나님이 나를 잡아주시는 것이 훨씬 더 강력합니다. 신자에게 하나님이 없다면 남는 것이 무엇입니까? 내 노력과 발버둥만으로는 이 늪을 빠져나오기 힘듭니다.

하나님은 우리의 노력을 대체하는 분이 아니라, 우리가 서야 할 ‘기반’이십니다. 우리의 수고와 애씀에 마침표를 찍어 주시는 분은 내가 아니라 하나님이셔야 합니다.

10절 말씀입니다. “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다.” 이는 흔들리는 인생들에게 “나를 알아 다시 일어서라”고 하시는 주님의 음성입니다. 인생의 뿌리요 창조자이신 하나님을 새롭게 발견하는 것, 그것이 흔들림 앞에서 우리가 해야 할 가장 가치 있는 일입니다. 하나님을 알 때, 밑동이 잘려도 우리는 다시 일어설 수 있고, 말라붙은 생명의 개울도 다시 흐르게 됩니다.

3. 새해를 여는 확신

한 해를 보내고 새해를 맞이하는 이 시간, 두 가지 확신을 붙듭시다.

① 하나님은 피난처이십니다 (1절).

“하나님은 우리의 피난처시요 힘이시니 환난 중에 만날 큰 도움이시라.”

하나님은 우리가 가야 할 유일한 피난처입니다. 피난처는 단순히 도망쳐 숨는 곳이 아닙니다. 흔들리는 자가 숨을 고르고, 힘을 얻어 다시 일어서는 회복의 자리입니다. 환난이 극심해도 피난처 되시는 주님이 계시기에 우리는 두려워하지 않습니다.

② 하나님은 우리와 함께하십니다 (7, 11절).

“만군의 여호와께서 우리와 함께 하시니…”

스바냐 3장 17절의 고백처럼, 우리 하나님은 우리 가운데 계시며 구원을 베푸시는 전능자이십니다. 그분은 우리로 인해 기쁨을 이기지 못하시며, 우리를 잠잠히 사랑하십니다. 마태복음의 약속처럼 세상 끝날까지 우리와 함께하십니다.

나의 슬픔과 고통, 기쁨까지도 함께 나누시는 하나님의 섭리를 신뢰하십시오. 그래서 견고해지십시오.

“새벽에 하나님이 도우시리로다” (5절).

어둠이 물러가지 않고 끝까지 버티는 마지막 고비의 시간, 그 새벽에 주님은 오셔서 도우실 것입니다. 반드시 손을 내미실 것입니다. 외면하지 말고 그 손을 잡으십시오. 한 해가 저뭅니다. 감사로 보냅시다.

한 해가 옵니다. 여전히 흔들림도 오겠지만, 주님도 반드시 오십니다. 주님과 함께 흔들림 속의 견고함을 누리는 복된 새해 되시길 축원합니다.

Steadfastness in the Midst of Shaking (Psalm 46:1-11)

1. The Reality of Shaking

Today’s text is the confession and resolution of a poet who, even amidst tremendous chaos and “shaking” where heaven and earth are turned upside down, does not collapse but looks upon God. The word “shaking” (or moved) appears repeatedly in verses 2, 3, 5, and 6. The earth gives way, and the mountains—symbols of immutability—shake and fall into the heart of the sea. This represents an existential crisis where the very foundations of life are being uprooted.

How terrifying and difficult is it when the things we relied upon and trusted disappear? As the poet Do Jong-hwan asked, “Where is the flower that blooms without shaking?” And as Goethe said, human beings wander and shake as long as they strive.

What has shaken you this year? Was it physical illness? Financial difficulty? Problems in relationships or doubts in faith? Whatever the situation, shaking is an unavoidable reality. However, what matters is not to collapse amidst that shaking.

2. Steadfastness: Roots and Being Held

(1) Roots: Let Us Shake Sufficiently

There is a poem by Ko Jung-hee titled For a Wounded Soul that gives deep resonance to us who are shaking.

“Even a damaged reed shakes generously for a season under the sky,

If the roots are deep, fresh shoots will sprout even if the trunk is cut.

Let us shake sufficiently, O wounded soul,

Let us go to pain while shaking sufficiently…”

The poet does not say “let us not shake,” but rather, if it is unavoidable, “let us shake sufficiently.” It means to face pain head-on. “There are no eternal tears.” True steadfastness lies in this confession. Steadfastness is not a state of being unshaken; it is the “power to stand again amidst the shaking.”

The poet confesses that even in the pitch-dark night, “one hand is coming to hold mine.” That hand, discovered by the poet while shaking, is exactly “God.”

(2) Being Held: Not Me, But God

When we shake, what we need is not “becoming strong” by ourselves, but “being held” by God. God holding me is far more powerful than me being strong. If a believer does not have God, what remains? It is impossible to escape this swamp with only my own efforts and struggles.

God is not a substitute for our efforts, but the “foundation” upon which we must stand. The One who puts the final period on our toil and labor must be God, not us.

Verse 10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

This is the Lord’s voice saying to shaking lives, “Know Me, and rise again.” Rediscovering God, who is the root of life and the Creator, is the most valuable task we must do before the shaking. When we know God, even if the trunk is cut, we can rise again, and the dried-up stream of life will flow once more.

3. Assurance to Open the New Year

As we send off the old year and welcome the new, let us hold onto two assurances.

① God is our Refuge (Verse 1).

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

God is the only refuge we must go to. A refuge is not merely a place to run and hide. It is a place of restoration where the shaking one catches their breath, gains strength, and stands up again. Because the Lord is our refuge even when troubles are severe, we will not fear.

② God is with us (Verses 7, 11).

“The Lord Almighty is with us…”

As confessed in Zephaniah 3:17, our God is in our midst, a Mighty Warrior who saves. He rejoices over us with singing and quiets us with His love. As promised in Matthew, He is with us to the very end of the age.

Trust in the providence of God, who shares in my sorrow, pain, and even joy. Therefore, be steadfast.

“God will help her at break of day” (Verse 5).

In that dawn, the last critical moment when darkness persists and refuses to leave, the Lord will come and help. He will surely extend His hand. Do not turn away, but take that hand.

A year is setting. Let us send it off with thanksgiving.

A year is coming. Shaking will come again, but the Lord will surely come as well.
